§ SOAR (SSI/SSDI, Outreach, Access and Recovery) certified-for individuals with behavioral health challenges who are homeless or at risk
§ Presenter and facilitator on implicit bias in the space of disability
    Clarification:
Dani would like to clarify something from the podcast episode: The maximum a disability attorney or non-attorney advocate can charge is 25% of an applicant's backpay, up to a maximum of $6,000.
    We also ask:
SSI/SSDI/SSA - please explain the differences!
Who makes the disability determination? (DDS)
What are the myths about SSI? Will my loved one have to stop working?
    How to apply - steps
    Do I need an attorney?
What is SOAR? Can they help? How much does it cost?
    What materials/records do I need to gather/create?

Thank you for this great video. I'm an appellate lawyer in California, not a disability-rights attorney, but we navigated SSI and SSDI for Stephen after he fell ill with childhood-onset schizophrenia at age 12. Stephen first applied for SSI at age 18. He transitioned to SSDI last year when his mother took early retirement at age 62, being insured on her record as a DAC beneficiary. This triggered the 24-month wait period for Medicare. So he's on SSDI and Medi-Cal (courtesy of the Pickle Amendment to section 503 of Public Law 94-566 of 1976), but will now transition to Medicare in about 10 months. We'll probably do a video on this but wanted to put this information out here about the Social Security DAC Benefit.

Hello Steve. I recently started following you and your son. Thank you for this comment. My son will be turning 18 in June so I’m just now getting started on learning about potential benefits for him. Can you please explain what changes once your wife took an early retirement? And was Stephen not eligible for Medicare once approved for SSI? Thank you so much!

Thank you, Three Moms! Thank you, Dani Page! Another wonderful podcast. This is not the easiest path to walk and it can feel heavy, but your show gives me hope and encouragement. --Fellow Mom

This was a great podcast! I wish I would have heard it 15 years ago--great information. Have already done, or thought about doing, an episode on the impact on the parent's income tax if they provide some support for a disabled adult child? The big question for me is, does claiming your disabled adult child as a dependent leave you open to an IRS audit, or your child open to losing some of their benefits? Thanks again.

Hi, I don't know if we can do a whole episode on that, but might be able to answer it if someone can consult an accountant who specializes. My understanding is that it's hard to find :rules" re who gets audited. I usually just ask my accountant!
