Friendship ,Madness, and the Tragedy of Good Intentions (Ep. 75)
It mentioned during the pod cast that older generations tend to keep family affairs close to the chest and behind closed doors. So true this is. I grew up with a mentally ill mother who my grandmother lead myself and my brothers to believe was all a choice and caused by drugs. When my daughter became ill I called on any remaining family about mental illness in our family. It was discovered that my mom had a diagnosis of schizophrenia when she was 22 and that there was a long line of other members with some forms of mental illness. Now, I realize my daughter would have schizophrenia regardless of my understanding but maybe we could have recognized early signs if we were educated. I understand my grandmothers decisions though. She was a young widowed mother of 3 in the 70s with only a middle school education.
Thank you so much.
Forgot to say: Fantastic episode. Thank you Lindsay and Three Moms for all that you do. After I found your show/podcast/youtube channel, I no longer felt so alone.
thanks so much! community helps a lot
Lindsay mentioned genetic testing for schizophrenia. I wasn't aware that there are firm genetic markers for schizophrenia. Can you tell me what they are? Are they included in the 23andme genetic test?
Hi I don't know more about that but lindsay's email is in the show description so you can ask her. thanks!
G’day from Oz. This discussion is amazing Wish I heard it sooner. Better late than never though. Thank you all so much. Wondering if you have any episodes about ADHD?
@@jed88 thanks! We don’t have any episodes specifically about ADHD but we do know it’s sometimes part of early symptoms .
Has anyone had any experience with ECT?
My daughter has had 24 ECT sessions. She showed improvement for a couple days then reverted right back into psychosis. She had a lot of issues with memory loss and was really tired the day of. No other side effects. I am also a nurse and have heard from individuals that are happy that they are doing it.
Great podcast
Thank you for creating this short film on such important topic. Hope it can be translated to other languages. 🙏🏼

Thank you very much.
How you were able to capture the depth of emotions from this illness is truly remarkable.
I appreciate you ladies beyond belief. You are inspiring and help me keep hope.
thank you! glad we can be of some help
Such a lapse in education in the medical field when it comes to the clinical psych rotation. For both Medical doctors and nurses. It's so frustrating as a nurse when we have a patient come in for a medical condition and will be with us for several days; we'll call the MD and ask them to order the patients outpatient meds. The doctors always leave off the psych meds then wonder 3 days later what's wrong with the patient. It's terrible and so preventable.
@@trevarobling8790 wow that is eye opening.
@@SZ3MomsTrenches the psych rotation is no more than 2-3 months unless you go into it as a specialty. I think people are afraid of it. I feel The Doctors don't understand the meds and stay away from them.
Yes I agree that increased awareness is needed!
This is so good! Thank you! 🙏 completely agree with everything that was said. The point about Anasagnosia and “behavioral” health. I did not know about the ER information and I’m so thankful to have learned about it.
We ARE our brother's and sister's keepers. If our society really believed that we all are responsible to one another, we would not leave our most vulnerable behind. Another beautiful show and wonderful guest. Bravo, dear Moms and Sister!!!
Another spot on podcast. love you 3 moms keep on keeping on xx
thank you!
Once again, an excellent podcast......practical info I'll use.....thank you!
you're very welcome! glad we can help
'guardian of the galaxy' there is no galaxy as they made it up. Your not stars in the sky your evil humans who are making up this planet in a fake reality and there are those who are willing to torture innocent people for money with their disgusting drugs they claim help people when they don't at all. Or do your doctor's work for the good of their patients or are your caregivers there to care or are you kind hearted humans! Your there as a political tool!
I listened to this episode and noted that Dr Duckworth stated that there are no dual-diagnosis treatment programs and if you have both mental illness and substance abuse, there are no programs available. I had the opposite experience in Los Angeles. I was told to say my loved one had dual diagnosis because there are many more treatment programs for substance abuse plus mental illness but not so much for "just mental illness". Also, even in the serious mental illness focused programs they seem to borrow a lot from substance abuse treatment and seem to blame the clients for their "bad" behavior. But he's right, there is no mental health "system." Thanks for the great interviews you do.
Kart XT is the med there is some promise as an adjunct for negative symptoms and cognition these new meds need to help studied longer than the standard 3 months But I’m excited to listen to this newest episode !
Thank you so much for all your dedication to helping our community. I don't feel quite so alone. Knowledge is power Love is what heals us all. 🪽💗🪽🙏🏼
so glad it's of some help. thanks for commenting! yes, love is so key...
Great information
thanks!
Rachel Streiff you are Amazing
I absolutely love this women’s knowledge
In Canada there are more cannabis stores than grocery stores in some neighborhoods It’s practically celebrated up here ER visits are up and first episode of psychosis are up and the THC concentration is sky high compared the past … It’s causal for a lot of people and it has been ruinous for many That’s all I can say ..
yes. nodding my head here...
This is my favorite episode so far. Thanks for your honesty I have been searching for other Mum's to have these conversations with. Such a lonely journey.

Once again, thanks for this episode. I am always waiting for new videos. Also, when i see stories like this, it brings me some hope. My son suffers from schizophrenia.
hope is always good...even though it fluctuates :)
I have just finished all of your books . Thank you so much . I see myself in each one of them as a mum of a 22 year old with a schizophrenia diagnosis and Anosognosia. Can I ask you all? How did each of your sons feel about you writing the books and doing this podcast. I’d like to be more public about my own situation but I don’t as I am trying to protect both my sons privacy and my relationship with him. No doubt these were areas of concern for you all too. Could I ask how you got around it in a way that your sons accepted. Many many thanks for 100 podcasts!!
@@kathrynrainbow hi this is Randye. I blogged about this , and glad you asked. When I was writing the book, my son balked at first. He still does not think he has schizophrenia. We talked about it (he was in treatment at the time, so easier to have the talk) and I explained that this was clearly a story from my point of view, not his, and I was sharing what my experience was. We also agreed to change his name. We have different last names , so no one can google him. That said, he said it was okay but that he had a different story to tell….which is true. I do wish he would write it. Also, part of him is kind of proud , oddly. Once, when he was at work, his supervisor said he thought his nephew had SZ and my son came home and asked if he could share the book with his supervisor. Whenever it involves helping someone else, Ben has a new take on things :)
@@SZ3MomsTrenchesoh thank you so much for taking the time to respond. It’s so helpful. And really gave me a sense of connection to you . 😊❤

not sure how to do it!
I like all the analogies. Helps me understand more of what my son is experiencing. Thanks for sharing!
What a wonderful inspiration you are, Ryan. Wow! This was a terrific dialogue with four amazingly cool, good folk!
So valuable. Been fretting about a trust for my son for quite a while. Glad I can listen again for answers. Thank you!
so glad it is helpful!
Very brave guy who seems to be doing well love and support from his family is just such a critical component it can be exhausting and not linear but that consistent love and support and encouragement is paramount As far as anasognosia I’m not certain he suffered from it it’s a distinct brain disorder that is not a part of all psychosis spectrum disorders it’s been shown it’s caused by brain damage to the part called the insula and neurological plasticity can help heal that damage in some -so insight returns - he seemed aware from day one things were changing in him not that he was fine and everyone around him had problems which is common I believe anasognosia will soon be in the DSM as a distinct disorder from psychotic disorders and just just a symptom Dr Turkington all psychosis involves anasognosia but not all with psychosis experience it in assuming that’s active vs residual as some with residual psychosis still have anasognosia even in his active state of psychosis he knew he will ill so it’s amazing and confusing !
Such inspiring story
I happened to watch a video Dr.Hoffman - niacin. The doctor treated a schizophrenia patients with naicin. I'd appreciate it if you could cover a case of treating schizophrenia with naicin and related stories. Thanks!
@@jinkim6424 we are planning a show on keto and can possibly add that to the agenda. There are many dietary claims out there and I’m sure some work for some. Sadly, this is not a one size fits all type of illness, we will explore this tho. Thanks

hi guys i have been attending my local clubhouse for the past four years & i love it!
Indiana only has it in limited counties. Hardly any counties have it is what I was told. Sad that it's only available in a few select counties, I hope it can become available to anyone in the US that fits the criteria.
Love love love you ladies & Dr Amador❤️ Your program along with Leap Institute has helped me tremendously as I deal with my son with schizophrenia & currently homeless & resisting treatment😢💔
thank you!
The misinformation in this video amounts to evil
What the hell are you trying to say? "They can't grasp that the voices aren't real"? If they aren't real what are they? If I hear a voice, what are you saying? The truth?? Any mention of DARPA and voice to skull technologies? Nope of course not. THis video popped up next after watching "Vulcan Wolverine" channel (look him up). Algorithm gaslighting me I guess.
I cannot tell you how grateful I am to have found your podcast. I can relate to everything on this topic. I have a 35 year old daughter and have dealt with this exact issue with her for the past 8 years

im schizo affective and had my first psychosis at age 16, i am 33 now and around 5 years out of psychiatry and in a social home with 3 other patients. i still experience psychotic episodes but manage them better as in the past. ive had drug induced psychosis with cannabis several times, one where i attempted suicide by jumping off a building wich i luckily survived, another one where i ended up 3 days in an isolation cell by smoking a joint wich triggered it. when my sister came to visit me in the secured section she told me if you smoke weed again i will never talk to you again, that has kept me off for around 8 years now. i still miss it when i think of listening to music riding my bike in nature stoned. but i need to remember the hell in psychosis it gave. thank you for spreading awareness, much respect
thank you SO much for sharing your story!
Was very excited and hopeful when I found this podcast hoping to gain insight and help for my son. Then I heard u suggest that my hard work and good decision making had something to do with the color of my skin and somehow gave me a privilege that other races do not have I found to be extremely racist and repulsive. I am not aware of any law or constitution that favors me over any other race. It certainly didn’t spare me from this dreadful illness. This is my first podcast. I hope the others don’t reflect those racist views and comments. We are all of the human race. Created equal and I expect that we all be treated that way.
Hi Renee, I’m so sorry we gave that impression and hope you will continue to listen. As a former DEI trainer, I could not agree more that we are all one race, with different ethnicities. Part of my DEI training was to be aware that “white privilege” does exist, so that we can work to see it, acknowledge it, and change it. We try to be aware that there is statistical evidence that this awful illness happens to all, regardless of country, color, or income level…and also that, because of that, others have a different experience. Medical statistics do indicate that schizophrenia can present differently in people of color, and we don’t know why. What we try to do is acknowledge that our experience may not reflect the experience of all, with different family and sociological backgrounds. I’m also painfully aware, as a woman who raised two kids counting every penny because of being abandoned by the father of my kids (no child support), that paying medical fess meant less food on the table, and that the “fancy” facilities that cost thousands of dollars a month were not an option for me. We try to acknowledge that at times, and apologize if it comes off as prejudiced in any way. Thanks for your comment.
Thank u for your response. I need to process a little bit but I do intend and have been listening to more episodes.
I’m so glad I found you ladies.Thank you because I’m feeling so alone in this journey
