- Find out how much horsepower my 4.6 Mustang makes after installing Comp Cams Stage 3 Cams (127600).
After rocking Brenspeed's Detroit Rocker camshafts for almost two years, it was time to upgrade to the most aggressive camshafts available for the 4.6 3-valve Mustang GT. In this video we compare dyno charts, exhaust sound, and race my buddy’s Camaro.

Anyone that buys underdrive pulleys is a complete idiot. I suggest you learn more. People like you are a joke.
Hey I highly doubt it but do you have the old cams you swapped out not the stocks but the ones that will work with stock springs and stuff ?? I’m just in California and was wondering if you have them and would sell them ?
Gears will make a difference in that race but what gears did the camaro have
The absolute hardest way to almost make 400hp with a 3V 😂😅
lol no doubt
Sure a turbo or sc would be easier but I think the idea was to see how much power he could squeeze out NA. Definitely beats the sound of forced air... and when he does add the twin turbo like he said with all the other mods that thing will be a monster.
Not to mention expensive.
If you got the money, build n/a with turbo future in mind and that turbo won't have to work as hard to make power. A more efficient engine is always better.

It pains me how underrated this channel is
This gem just showed up in my recommended. Glad it did. Subbed b4 the video was even over
Might have something to do with the six months between videos. I certainly used his videos as a guide when I first started.
When you use Detroit rocker and comp cams…..you wasted money on cams 2x.
That’s why I don’t watch this channel.
Ford really just dropped the ball with the 3v mustang. It’s such a great looking car too. But 387 wheel for a stroked, heads/cam fbo engine should be the title of a horror movie
Totally agree. The newer Mustang’s are better in every way. Not worth dropping that amount of money just to keep up.

*Unfortunately my buddy sold his Camaro* 😐 But I am in the process of installing a T56 Magnum on the Mustang (which will be the subject of the next Mustang video). After the new 6-speed is installed and the Mustang is retuned, I'll be setting up some races against stock Gen 1, Gen 2, and Gen 3 Coyote Mustangs, and maybe a stock Camaro SS for good measure. Stay tuned.

Him: My gears are too long.
Playing the long game. Some cars seem slow, until they can comfortably cruise at 150-170 mph without being in high rpms
I've had a couple sport bikes like this, the gears are so long geez you staying first or second up to about a hundred in the city but on the highway you'll be in third or fourth going 130 at like 4000 (out of 12 😂)

A few of you have commented that the gear-grinding in 2nd may be due to a worn synchro. Good possibility this is the issue (I'm hoping the old clutch's diaphragm was just weak from abuse). If this is the case, I'll be swapping in a 6-speed. If you have any experience swapping transmissions on S197s, please feel free to reply to this comment. And no, I don't want an auto.
I disagree on the synchro. These S197's use a body mount shifter, and at WOT your engine and trans is twisting, while the shifter is not, since it's mounted to the body. Get a Blowfish Racing V2 shifter bracket and your choice of short shifter. The bracket allows the shifter to mount to the trans, no more grinding gears.
Edit to add, if you have $3500 burning a hole in your pocket, a Tremec T56 Magnum XL should bolt right in. The extended tailshaft housing locates the shifter in the right spot for these cars.
Might look at a bowler t56 magnum XL, as they're made to bolt right up in that car, or possibly the same trans from tick, tick knows how to make a trans hold tons of torque/power. Might also look into either mantic or black magic clutches, and 3.55 or 3.73 gears. I have 3.55s in my 96 and they're great, but I'm also on a 4r70 auto with a high stall converter so down low it acts more like a 3.73 or a 4.10. Just make sure when you go to upgrade things that your future proofing for those turbos or you'll end up spending the same money again to make it hold more when you need it. Also if you're mostly stock suspension look into control arms with poly bushings, it's a world of difference when it comes to putting the power down, poly or solid motor and trans mounts are a good idea too, plus 4link adjustability is great if you know someone with experience setting them up. Just a side note, 3.55s are very steerable but give you a good kick, 3.73s will kill your mileage but have even more down low.
that grinding is 100% the synchro on it's way out the door. swapping the trans from your 3650 to a 6speed (tr6060, t56, stay way from the mt82 garbage), is going to be more of a nightmare than it's worth. If you can get the trans crossmember from an '08 gt500, and the tr6060 in it, it'll be a tad easier. Next, you're going to need a new pilot bearing, new throwout, new slave, etc.
Shifting is a common issue with our transmissions, 2nd to third hard shifts were the worst for me. Was having similar issues with mine and took it into my Ford mechanic and he tested it out, said it was the way they worked and that they are pretty solid transmissions other than this issue. I installed the MGW short throw shifter ( www.mgwshifters.com/shifters/mustangs/102 ) and it made shifting much better. Its highly adjustable, what i like the most about it. Also swapped out the trans fluid with Royal Purple which seemed to help a bit. Here's a link that I book marked awhile back regarding shifting issues: www.allfordmustangs.com/threads/2008-mustang-gt-transmission-synchronizer-problems.116935/
I highly agree with nick on this had the same issue with mine at high rpm on the track I put the blowfish racing bracket and fixed my lock out issue I definitely recommend this mod for our remote body shifters. It also has a drive shaft loop on it so your legal on the strip when you turbo it.
Glad to see someone still messing with their old 3v as I have been for the last 10 years
@BR-P-2001 // No. when the coyote came out and was as responsive to mods as it was, even with the MT trans; most people upgraded to the yote. Dealing with the overhead cams and the 3v takes a lot of patience, time and money. The reward isn’t as satisfying as the 5.0
Jordan from Modular head Shop actually Loves 3vs
@BR-P-2001 // Not that at all... they are just not responsive to mods at all. This guys is thousands of dollars in and still hasn’t cracked 400 Rear. A coyote will do do that with simple intake/tune/exhaust.

Inspirational for us 3v owners brother

This has definitely been a fun project to watch, and I’m looking forward to how it does with the improvements!
I love this build and the character it has as a 3v. I ended up just going with coyote swap because of how good a platform it is and how easy it is, but a built 3v is still awesome and that car is a beauty. You might consider the epas rack conversion for the lower weight and steering quality to get the most hp/least weight from the drivetrain.
100%! Best mods for S197 cars are GT500 4 pot brembos, wide square tires (I run 275 square on 18×10s), rear control arms for wheel hop issues, 11-14 front LCAs are nice if you don't mind modifying the knuckle a bit, EPAS rack is definitely nice to have. Also if you drive a manual buy an aluminum clutch master cylinder rod end because yours will probably break eventually and you'll be stranded. They're like 10 bucks and can be installed with an Allen wrench in 5 minutes, rather than a $500 trip to the mechanic for a new clutch master clutch just for the rod end
What was your total price for the Coyote swap? Thx
@@Phantom096 it just depends on a lot of factors but bare minimum 10 grand.
Dude I’m so glad that this channel popped up on my feed. I love this model of mustang so much and I’m looking forward to seeing your journey🙏🏼
I appreciate builds like this... it isnt the fastest, but sometimes its fun just to see what you can do. Have your tuner build you a 100 octane tune with a sprinkle of nitromethane.
His compression is so low(9.5:1) he could run 87-91 and be fine. He would just dump so much fuel for a tiny gain in power it would just hurt the wallet. Math is important when building a engine. 12.5:1 would be better for 100 octane. His setup up is a good candidate for boost, but even a boosted engine I would prefer i higher static compression and lower overall boost pressure to achieve numbers. Sounds decent though for such low compression.
@@keva3336 thank you. So few people actually understand octane/ compression. Seems a lot are educated by fast and furious movies rather than hands on.
It’s a very low compression motor built for boost.

As far as I know, the 3V 5 speed is a beast of a transmission, and if you're planning on getting a Coyote 6speed I've heard horror stories on the weakness and inability to change gears at high RPM, keep the 5speed IMO. Also, 355 gears were stock on those too, although 373 are a blast to drive on the daily and for enthusiast driving.
I love your channel and I love your mustang keep 'em coming!

Straight facts bro

Lmao that’s what I was doing as I read this!! 😂
As a fellow 3v'er with a stock TR3650 I can suggest that your 1st - 2nd shift problem may not be your clutch. I went thru multiple options/upgrades (stainless clutch line, new clutch, Blowfish bracket etc.) trying to fix the 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd high rpm shift lockout (the grinding you felt). It wasn't until I installed the CHE torque limiting brace from the trans to the k member that my issue improved substantially. I know u know what you're doing but I've lived this issue. It's completely frustrating and will only get worse with more power without that brace. Love the channel man.
Does double clutching fix the problem?
@@LionAndALamb I have the same problem but a far different car. My 95 4runner is slow but to get on the freeway I really gotta push the rev limiter to get up to speed on time and I have found that double clutching cuts about a half a second off the grinding which is a lot but not enough to completely get rid of it.
Power up. Take off in 2nd!!!!!
The ultimate source of the gear clashing problem is that the ratio splits in the 3650 are simply too big. When you shift gears, the synchro/blocker rings job is to decrease the speed of the input shaft to match the next higher gear but the inertia of the input is tied directly to the polar moment of the 10.5" clutch disc. The wider the split, the more change in RPM during the shift. The only way to effectively reduce the inertia is to go with a smaller clutch diameter which is why so many performance cars now use a smaller diameter (i.e. 8") multi-disc arrangement. There are now several companies making dual disc clutches for the Mustang which will drastically help the problem.
Not a big fan of mustangs but I've honestly got to respect the build and the dedication to this car. Nicely done man

Good video man straight to the point, numbers for everything and logical explanations. I don’t have a mustang myself but your build helps me decide mods for my hemi.
Your car and your project are awesome. In an era where electric bars of soap run 10s and 9s with no driver intervention, the acceleration numbers are losing importance. By all means, make the engine as powerful as possible but the experience, the sound, the feel, the driver interaction are way more important now. The 4.6L may be a gen out of date but I’ll be damned if it’s not one of the best sounding engines ever made. BTW, visual mods on your car are perfection. Nicely done.
Im not even a muscle car/v8 guy but this thing is nice and sounds great

Excellent information. The sound of this engine with cams is so good. But I am getting older (and lazier), so taking the rpm all the way to 6k to hit peak power is not my idea of fun. A mild preparation and a good turbo will easily yield 400hp and a ton of torque. My 2007 GT was so much fun to drive even with the original engine and flowmasters. However it drove like a 60's truck.

Oh no, I lowered my compression. Well, guess I'll just slap some turbos on this bad boy. And that is how you solve a problem.
Thats actually how you solve that issue with upgraded heads already. He put comp cams in which only gave him 22 hp i think. So, the only other way to boost compression is turbo or supercharger. Turbos will feed the power a whole lot more efficiently.
A full point of compression should only be about 10 to 15 horsepower from everything I've researched

It seems so strange that a 4.6l V8 produces little more power than a stage 3, 1.6l fiesta st. Shows how effective turbos can be.
A lot of big american engines are simply underpowered though, compared to other engines of similar size and year. I was going to comment on torque numbers for big displacement engines, but the current Fiesta ST also has almost 300nm, too.
