- In the previous couple of episodes we focused on the cars, now it is time to look at some of the tech that goes into turning a classic car in EV speed machine.
Thanks go to Richard and the whole team at Electric Classic Cars for making this video possible.

Hope you find more worm holes to see them again , once he has done a few of these conversions the price may come down , could watch dozens of these, great job both of you
great to see a little behind the scenes of ECC, thanks for taking the time to show us .
any plans to visit the london motor show next week ? would be nice to see a little vlog from there . runs from the 4th-7th may.
Why have a 12V battery instead of just stepping down voltage from the main pack?
Awsome! What a great three days you had! LOL wormhole! 😆😆😆
Another tractor video for Jasper.
Jasper's tractoring starts about 0:45 in from the beginning.

Very cool. So great to see people thinking outside the standard gas combustion box. Thanks for showing, but when you visit him next time, please bring along a drone to chase the noisy birds away. That high pitched chirping is driving me daft. Thanks in advance. Love that 911 and Bug. Electric go- carts for grownups! Cheers
Absolutely love what you are doing with the classics. Love the Superbug. What are the chances of a 'challenge' EV Conversion of a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud from the mid-seventies? Many of these now have tired engines. This would be the ultimate goal in silent travel, but not easy to move (and stop) over two tons of motor car with additional heavy battery Packs. I would love to see that! Australia (here) has an abundance of sunshine, but it seems that we are slow on the uptake in moving to EV's. Great show. Thanks.
your sunglasses don't travel via wormhole!
+Michael Edmond Good spot, they got knocked back by the interdimensional flux ;-)
James Cooke you need to get the wrap around ones doc brown wears, and get a flux capacitor in your car!
Well it's a pity that RUclips doesn't have double like buttons
I think James found a new best-buddy. He's been spending a lot of time over at the English Manor. I think James may have found a new hobby. I've always been interested in reviving classic german cars but convert them to EV.
That guy is a goldmine for EV stuff. Just shows you can convert the more basic cars no problem with a bit of work. Seemingly news just in Mini are going for a full EV version and want it to be both performance and one of the main sellers of the range, great they are getting serious over that mini E they done years ago in 2012 that disappeared of the scene. I'd love a classic Rover SD1 full EV.
Here’s the current state of motor technology: liquid cooled, twin rotor, axial flux motors. They are larger radius, because the moment arm of the rotor gives far better torque. So the torque to weight ratio is way higher. There’s two main leaders in this: YASA motors in England and Magnax in Belgium. I’d imagine they will soon dominate the electric motor market.
Check StoreDot for batteries and dwave vw for traffic networks
Wormhole transportation will never catch on.
It just does not have the range. 😁
My ideal electric conversion would be a Karmann Ghia.
I know EV west have done a few in the states.
Hello!! i loved it!!! can i ask pleeeeaaseee.. make a video about the Range Rover once it is done!!! greetings from Cuba ^_^
I like the wormhole star trek effect within this vlog.
James, what a fascinating report you put together with Richard! I look forward to further videos after he completes the Range Rover. Did he reveal where he obtained the various batteries and motors?
Donald Moe Interestingly I seen a clip of a guy who rebuilds tesla cars (God knows how he does it as you'd think tesla would kill the telemetry etc of n a car now off the road) . Sadly even with the great tech there are a fair few that are sitting in scrap yards after being written off by insurance. The guy was in the USA but he'd drive for days to buy the damaged cars, fit them into a trailer and strip them back at his workshop.
That was interesting. In ten years time you'll look back on the video and not be able to believe how big the batteries were (hopefully). Now you've perfected the wormhole the car is pretty much obsolete anyway.
Two of my all time great cars , my 911S2.2 (1981-2015) and classic RangeRover (1990-2007), if only they had been EVs (sigh), i'm sure IC engined cars encourage corrosion as well as being dirty, also neither got above 18 mpg!
I also once had a red Beetle.
I like the way cooling the electrics help warm the interior.
Best video for a long time.
What kind of lift will the Range Rover get? What tyres? Is the winch already fitted?
2 years ago Fifth Gear had a go of an Electric Defender Land Rover (ruclips.net/video/gM9WwLso0vg/видео.html) wonder what the difference between Range Rover in-house and the one being built will be like
His super beetle is a STUNNER.
James you cut off Richard before he said how he drives the steering/booster pump at 7:35. Does he use a small separate motor or use a belt to drive them from the traction motor?
Another brilliant video, James! I hope you patented your wormhole generator...
I forgot this was just a vlog and not a program on the Discovery Channel there for a minute!
More thumbs ^. Great vid again
can you ask him how the cells are connected (in the tesla one ) and how much voltage they have i would really like that information
what do they do with automatic vehicles?
Most interesting ev video I have seen on RUclips so far.
Ok so how will be the Tesla packs cooled or in that Rover?
Interesting tech info, another good video James.
Great episode! You British are so inventive...
Thanks for showing us the conversions of the older cars☺️
Nice work James.
Hi James. I'm a huge Range Rover Classic fan. Don't foget to let us know the resut of the conversion. I'm extremly curious!!!!! Regards roman
No worries, I've definitely got a trip up there planned to give the Range Rover a proper look over once it is completed.
great episode
Insane!!! ....I love it!!
Could the battery cooling and hot ESCs (motor controllers) not be harnessed to heat the car?
I understood that the Smart cars used Tesla sourced batteries?
I don't think there is enough waste heat to make all the extra complexity worth it. Don't forget these cars have quite serious amount of stored energy when full charged, things like heat pumps heat exchangers, etc... only really make sense with low range EVs that need all the help they can get in winter.
Do they use new batteries or get them second hand? can I buy them directly to Tesla?
He's mentioned before he gets them from crashed Roadsters.
:)
Perhaps your most interesting set of vids, Big Thank You BOTH Richard n James..............
:)
I want that bug !!!
How much does each of the 3 showcased conversions cost? He does a good job of maintaining symmetry under the hood with the dual controller/dual motor/dual charger. I bet he can make a pretty nice E-Jag or Aston Martin, MG, Triumph.
Some of the other conversion shops are raising the bar and putting entire Tesla Drive units in old VWs, which gets rid of all the weak links and useless parts, like the flywheel, clutch, transmission.
do you have a link to those?
Yeah I don't see the point of keeping the transmission since it's no fun rowing an electric motor I'd assume. I think this guy just goes for having everything be as easy as possible on his end which is fine since there's not exactly an EV conversion shop in every town.
I think " beam me up Scotty" would be cooler than the worm hole lol😄😉, jk, great video, I can see battery conversions on ICE cars being done more and more in the coming years! Very cool!!
any idea where they purchased the batteries from?
Simply here ;)

Hello James
This was an amazing series of video. So glad to see iconic cars being converted to BEVs.
One question about the battery packs which were being installed.
How was the thermal management done for those? Can you please five some details and technical information about that.
keep up the good work!!
Great fun with the "Worm Hole"! Love Richard's projects!
Love this conversation video! I'm seriously considering doing this to my classic mini. I hope the price keeps going down so everyone can eventually do this.
What does he use instead of 12V batteries? What type designation?
I think they are just 12v batteries with really low ah ratings (something like 18ah sounds about right going from the size of the batteries).
I know lowest Optima Yellow 38Ah only www.battery-import.cz/optima-yellowtop/autobaterie-optima-yellow-top-s-2-7--38ah--12v/ (with standart contacts)
That was really fascinating. Would love to see ECC do a Mini.
Thinking carbon fiber hood on the RR! Incredibly well put together vid!
This series of ev conversion videos have been excellent. so informative.
Now that was really really interesting. Loved all that. Thanks James.
Make sure we get to see that Range Rover! : )
I need to find more worm holes, I'd save a fortune...lol. Great video James!
Loved the tech overview, really great James.
Air cooled electric - theres some cool irony for you - back to the future - love it
Is that really a brushless AC motor like he said? I think he means DC. Power density doesn't look so good so I assume it's DC and people don't usually say brushless AC rather AC induction motor. When you're speaking of brushless motors you're usually referring to DC motor as far as I'm aware since there is no such thing as brushed AC motors. Also he didn't show an inverter. I must say I'm rather underwhelmed the conversions are very well done but I feel like they could get better performance.
evtv comes to mine I've seen it all before I love the passion but there not safe for so many reasons
it's not crash tested its using a HV battery the cells or motor are not cooled or heated
the controllers need redundancy
and what BMS are u gonna use that won't burn it to the ground
not sure why u need to scan the module u could measure the mounts and make a mock up in fusion 360
image if you rolled the car
any way love the passion just not safe in the 2017 for road use love and peace
