This is a great idea, just wanted to mention the notawheelchair project by @JerryRigEverything. Sounds like the front half of the rig they make would be perfect for what you're talking about.
I watched all his videos on building that thing! TBH a lot of the inspiration from the prototype I am making comes from that. I hope to be done with a rough cut of it soon.
