I love it! For 7 winters I drove a ‘79 tucker that had been refitted with a very stout 350 chev at a small ski resort. I lived in that thing for 5 months a year and loved every minute of it. Always something to fix on it but it was a great machine and did a ton of work. Last time I drove her was 24 years ago!!
To climb powder hills, going forward, it makes a HUGE difference if you have the bulk of the machine's weight on the very front. It makes a HUGE difference, thrust me, snowcatting ski hills and snowmobile trails for 30 years now. A winch cat is designed to do just that, put some more weight on the front axles. The winch itself, will have a 2 to 4 tons pull, not nearly enough to get the job done by itself BUT, the high center pull, from the winch, will make you climb almost ANY hills, even pushing snow with the blade.
The machines with a track on each wheel are pretty tough but partially don't have enough track surface for deep snow. The suspension also lets each assembly flex a bit too much and lets one end of the track sink and dig down. The single, long, and wide tracks appeared to do a lot better at staying on top, to me.
What are those sno cats for if they dont go in the snow. Are they to weighted down too much or something. Maybe super wet snow. The red ones climb pretty good. I emagine it can be a lot of variables but sure looks fun.
