Aerospace engineer here: you need aero on the entire car. As long as you use light enough material it will improve the times more than the weight savings would. Also design it like a water drop as much as possible and go for smooth edges. I believe you could get in the low 8s like this as long as you have grip

    • @thlightest9827
      @thlightest9827 Год назад +85

Aerospace engineer here: The biggest problem is the low air pressure pocket behind the windshield. It appears they want the kart style look on the plaid, so in that case they would need some inward facing fins to help with the pocket. But as for the rest of the body small panels or fins on the tube frame to create a better streamline.

    • @lazar2175
      @lazar2175 Год назад +121

@@thlightest9827Mechanical engineer here: Due to all weight removed, the suspension isn't working optimally, making the car sit quite tall from what I can observe, and probably making it a fair bit more bouncy.
This, combined with the poor tire choice for this application, and the fact that they removed the front bumper, which acts as an air dam making a low pressure area under the car, exerting downforce.
So, I'd first upgrade the tires and fit either a front bumper or fabricate a splitter for up front, as both can be done quite cheaply. Suspension upgrades would be great, but I don't think there are many Tesla aftermarket suspension options?
After all this, it might be worth it to dive deeper into reducing the drag, but the current greatest gains are to be made on traction issues.

On the Aero for the strip, I don't think the front bumper and fenders are going to do much. Hood will give some improvement, but the biggest aero issue you have is the giant pocket of low air pressure you're creating behind the windshield, which increases with speed. Ideally you want to remove the rear shock towers and add body panels to make the whole rear end have a fastback shape. If you want to keep the kart-style, id put some inward facing fins that also roughly make the shape of a fastback. Or maybe there's a way to add something like the Mclaren Elva's virtual canopy where you put an airscoop on the front that directs air through the firewall and blows straight out from the top and sides of the windshield?
And you want to use the spoiler, your're going to get a significant downforce improvement if you have a roof, or mount it much higher up. It needs to be outside of the low air pressure bubble. Side panels dont have as much of an effect.

If you had a Plaid that started out with a 9.4 and stripped it like they did then they would already be even lower into maybe the 8.7s.

Really recommend talking to someone who knows aerodynamics when doing this though. Will really help you with this. The underfloor part you removed should definitely go back on.

Looks very good guys ! You should be able to reduce the weight by half again if you remove the battery pack and redo the cells into packs of your own. If you only need X amount of cells per 1/4 mile run you should be able to hot swap multiple lightweight battery packs so theres always a fully charged pack ready.

@@scotttod6954 Then for each run you recharge it with a big generator. Keep in mind that the Tesla Model S consumes about 1.7 kWh to run the 1/4 mile, so you'd need a 20hp generator to get a the supercapacitors up to full in just over 5 minutes. That 1.7 kWh figure though accounts for the sheer mass of the 100 kWh battery which can do 58 runs before being fully dead, each of those runs steadily getting slower and slower as the battery voltage sinks in an exponential decrease, staying high for a while before it sinks faster and faster. Thankfully supercaps deliver their maximum current right up to the point where they're dead, so no performance loss as they drain!

Really awesome build! Just the name itself is fantastic. That said, you guys are way off on the aero talk. First off, the model S has fantastic aero from factory. It was the most slippery car in production when launched, not sure if it still is. That is the less important part though, the more important part is that you guys fundamentally misunderstand aero. Making changes to the front is positive to make the air stick better to the car but you will see the big gain if you cover the back of the car. Ideally, you want the shape to taper off like a water drop. Most aerodynamic drag is literally created by drag and that happens behind structures when you move through the air. What happens is that low pressure is created behind the structure, essentially sucking the car back. At the front, on the "pressure side" you will build up air pressure that pushes the air out of the way. So, if you want to try to really reduce the aero drag, cover the car using the cage with some light material.

    2) Couldn’t tell in the video, but make sure you turn all other systems like air conditioning off before you go down the track.
    3) You also need to go into the software and adjust the mph limit. Just be aware that doing so does impact the longevity of the motors.

However, they failed to properly build a proper Roll Cage as required by NHRA for 8.5 sec & 150+ MPH along with a parachute. How did BMP allow this to occur ? => during private track rental it seems they do not apply the proper safety requirements, rules ?!!
@BoostedBoiz; @boostedboiz; Kyle & Wyatt, if You had accepted broper concepts, principles, reality, advice then You would have achieved the proper results already during these first runs
      A. Aerodynamics
      1. affects significantly from 40-60 MPH increasingly exponentially with speed and acceleration
      a. known equations within physics
      b. proven reality by placing hand, arm outside any traveling vehicle and with any bicycle, scooter, motorized vehicles
      c. need full body, not just front end, including top, sides, rear to channel air properly, along with flat bottom panels.
      2. affects launch, traction, etc.
      B. traction is key - as per Tesla Plaid Channel, Andrew and Tesla Plaid Racing in Canada [fastest, as referred 8.73 sec 1/4 mile, 162+ MPH]
      C. peak performance - batteries heated - have significant affect upon power available, thus via computer control
      1. see posted videos from Andrew, Tesla Plaid Channel at BMP, OSW,
      2. ask man in Canada, Chet, others
      D. As per man in Canada, Tesla Plaid Racing, improved traction with M/T 275 Street Radials,
      1. rear tires minimum
      2. perhaps will also improve with front too
      3. still track preparation is key as seen a BMP, Canada man experienced in June 2023 compared with Napierville NHRA track
      4. lighter wheels improve weight and rotating mass
      E. The rear wing will help with downforce, thus traction, if position and shaped properly
      1. else drag increase
      2. rear tail, flat wing may be more effective
      3. consider proper air flow through front, under, out from under rear -> see NPK, Pro Mod, Funny Car, etc.
      4. also need air release, flow which builds up within wheel wells too.
      F. The more effort placed into proper aerodynamics, the more efficient the use of the power/weight and imporved traction
      G. Please be extremely careful with brakes !! Note: Stock brakes and fluid are actually dangerous, overheat quickly, easily, not suitable for any racing conditions
      1. As Andrew states, he runs only 4 consecutive passes, with minimal time, then more significant time break [may not be actually, properly sufficient - he is somewhat ignorant - proven by his statements]
      2. As Chet and many others note, know, shown, proven the stock brake disks, pads become literally red hot during repeated, long time period high speed and road track use. => thus Brake Fade = serious danger !!
      3. As Chet and many others note, know, stock brake fluid is only DoT 3 -> fist simple modification is replacing with DoT 4 for higher temperatures
      4. second requirement is replacing with ceramic-carbon disks--rotors, improved, high heat, brake pad materials as Unplugged, RB Performance, others or Tesla
      H. Please consider more, proper safety including a full containment seat within this modified Tesla and all of Your vehicles sued for racing.
      All The Best, Sincerely
