Man... you can almost feel how he's moved by the greatness, the outright majesty of this game's experience, how he wants everyone in the world to try it out... what a great reviewer, what a great gamer. I seriously need to try this game out, sadly the only Nintendo system I own is a 3DS and am saving for a PlayStation 4.
Yep, twelve years later and I'm still totally in love with them. Prime 2 and 3 too, played the hell out of all 3 of them, beaten everything, because it's just THAT good. It's really one of the handful of games that I need to play every once in a while to leave behind me a shitty day or need some alone time. Very few games really put your mind at peace playing it when you choose to avoid combat.
asterack Indeed, he was the best back, and no one has surpassed his passion for reviewing. He is the polar opposite of many of the hipster types you see now that are obsessed with their image and snarky reviews. Perhaps that's why I no longer watch many video reviews. Long Live the Mighty Kasavin!
This really is the best video-review of all times. I love this game and I've lost count, how many times I have watched this. It's not the slickest video production of all time, but such an honest, heartfelt review. No wonder Greg went on the much greater successes with supergiant games and hits such as Bastion, Transistor, Pyre and Hades. What can't this man do?! ;-)
What a review. It's hard to believe this guy was ever associated with Gamespot. I can just imagine Kevin V complaining about the backtracking and saying the game is bad as a result, without saying much else about it.
I love this entire review, but I especially love when Greg says, "people seem to think they hate it". He says it about the backtracking, but it applies to a lot. People, especially the average game player seldom is truly reflective or introspective when they play and review a game....often they're ruining the experience for themselves during that transition from immersed, absorbent kid to hyper-critical, 30-something, self-described "gamer". They go in bored, they hold preconceptions of things that are objectively "bad" and things they hate, paying no mind to context and the overall experience.
This guy literally cannot stop praising this title from beginning to end. I am proud to say i picked up a copy at launch and was just as blown away. It just felt like such a huge leap forward, any one of the mechanics Retro Studios implemented would have made for a great game, but all of them combined made for something really special. I wonder if we will ever see such a dramatic improvement in the Metroid series again. One can only hope...
SoloWatcher86 sigh. Tried, can't do it, can't do the motion controls :( I did just find my GameCube in my parents basement and brought it home. Original disc with a Wavebird, just got missiles and morph ball! :D
@ Joe Giovingo Awesome! yeah, the motion controls aren't everyone's cup of tea. I liked them in Prime 3. If you haven't done Prime 2 or 3 I definitely recommend those to. I think Prime 2 is super underrated. I literally started a save file in 2004, got halfway, left for college and then finished it 10 years later. So glad I did.
That's crazy man! I remember in 2005 I scoured GameStops looking for a new copy of MP2. Found one, played for a few hours and stopped for reasons I have no idea. Still have it! I plan on making my way back through 2 and 3, need to catch up!
There is no story? You discover the story as you scan and read the logs. This game has a great story, it just isn't forced upon you. This is my favorite game of all time.
Prime 1 really doesn't have much of a story though, at least in comparison to 2 and 3. The logs pretty much boil down to the chozo talking about how they see the future and samus saving the planet, and a couple of space pirate logs that foreshadow some events later on in the game like the Omega pirate. Nothing like Prime 2's badass tale of a dying planet and it's inhabitants' fight for survival, or Prime 3's in depth logs going into the history of each species on each planet.
This is my favorite review of any game I have played. Really in depth with great points worth mentioning like the little details about the x-ray visor and samus' hand gestures. Great work. They don't make reviews like this any more.. :(
Reviews, today, are held under strict deadlines, and they've lost a lot of the depth and passion. Pretty sad.. Thank god for reviewers like Angry Joe, Lazy Gamer, and Super Bunnyhop
Phenomenal review, you can really hear the passion this guy has for the game. I’ve never played a Metroid game before and so I came here to watch the original review before playing Metroid Prime Remastered.
I’m here because Metroid prime remaster came out and I don’t have a switch and after not wanting to get a switch now I’m really considering it over this damn game. I have spent so much $ on Series X /S and PS5 now this
He started up a small indie game company called Supergiant Games. The only game they've made so far is Bastion that came out last year on 360 and PC. Greg is the lead writer there.
Wow, I have been saying Greg’s last name incorrectly for all these years! I remember reading his Metroid Prime review way back in 2002. It was eloquent and informative, and made GameSpot my primary source for video game news and reviews. I hope he is enjoying himself at his new game development company.
I'm here because I realize that this guy directed Hades one of my new favorite games of all time. I used to watch his Gamespot reviews back in the day. They were great.
Not sure were you got your facts from but that's completely wrong. Greg left on his own accord and has gone on to do many great things. He's one of the founders of Supergiant Games and is the lead writer and designer there. They put out the incredible Bastion a couple of years ago and have a new game called Transistor coming out next year.
Greg had a lot to say. A 17 minute review? I'm happy he went on to do what they do! Great games. I still need to play Bastion and Pyre though. I LOVE Transistor and Hades! Hades is one of my favorite games of all time.
+Singularity YES! Most games aren't like this anymore. The sense of exploration, isolation, and mystery in this game is so captivating. Keep in mind this is not a first person shooter per'say. More like a first person adventure/exploration game with shooting in it.I would love to see an updated version of this game running on modern hardware with new graphics. It would be a masterpiece (not like the original isn't though)
+Singularity I can only agree with the others. There are no words describing how good this game is. And yet you have "Metroid Prime 2: Echoes" to play after...
would this have been a different experience without a guide? i wouldn't have been able to beat the final boss without know those darn hidden missles, health and bomb expansions not to mention the chozo artifacts.
Just got The Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii U, playing the first, and loving it! Part of the reason I got the Wii U was because I had never experienced games like The Legend of Zelda,Donkey Kong Country,Bayonetta,Star Fox,F-Zero,Animal Crossing, and Metroid before. Luckily, I've already started catching up with Donkey Kong Country, The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid, though I've already played the Bayonetta games(the 2nd one twice in fact). Just a few more franchises to go!(Although I'll have to add more on my list if they ever make Fire Emblem or Golden Sun for Wii U)
+ThatIncredibleJordan I've not got around to Super Metroid, but I quite like Zero Mission. I love how it's such a complete remake with full new areas and modernized gameplay, yet it still has the charm of the original.
Should I play this game? I love the original Metroid for the NES (one of my favorite games), but for whatever reason, I've never really been able to enjoy Super Metroid, but I do love Symphony of the Night (one of my other favorite games). Do you think I would enjoy this game even though I enjoyed Metroid and SOTN a lot more than Super Metroid?
you should definitely play it. it is essential, for anyone who has even a passing interest in metroidvania games. I find it odd you liked symphony of the night and super metroid, since they're so structurally similar. but to each their own! enjoy this classic :)
This game costed me a lot of things along the money. Had to cut playing PS2, playing with people on it, had to cut a great deal with the zelda bundle... but it was worth it. Oh so worth it. And I afforded a PS2 later anyway lol
Does anybody know which is the song that plays at the end? i know it's brinstar but i can't find that version anywhere! and no, it's not from metroid metal!
It's one of the greatest games ever created mate, but I wouldn't expect this to respark an interest in first person shooters. If you play this, all other fps games will seem dull in comparison.
Wow a 17 minute video review. Old gamespot was the best, when I was like 8 I would just scroll their website looking at all the top games and dreaming of playing them. That and gamefaqs… now the world sucks. Someone should start a new video game news/media company and have it be like this.
I have to respectfully disagree, because Metroid is about exploring small, claustrophobic space installations. An open world would remove the handmade, smooth beauty of the level design.
EdwardERS Different company, I know, but I wish we still had reviewers like this on these websites instead of people like that girl who gave Pokémon OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire a 7.5 for too much water without looking at much else.
I always regarded it as a one-off (and the 2D Metroid games before it mere influences upon it). It's Alice in Wonderland. It's Banjo Kazooie. You can do sequels if you must but they're too late to the party, just like Samus is late to the Chozo civilisation party. it's about setting up an elegantly mysterious blend of level design, incidental effects, a subtle blend of the arcadey and the adventure genre and the platform genre. Sequels, even when trying not to go stereotypically 'bigger and better' always specialise in something e.g. light and dark world- it kills the organic feel of the original. Also , the huge scale and heavy atmosphere of subsequent games such as Half Life 2, Bioshock, Uncharted, The Last Guardian means that it isn't as easy now to convey a sense of quiet architectural majesty. Metroid Prime was actually very well DIRECTED in terms of when and where things appear, colour scheme, details , use of level design. It cannot be easily replicated in the Metroid series itself, particularly when it isn't taken in to account that the novelty of MP is partly that a game set in space could be treat like a game set on earth - moving, scary, historical. It had an environmental , atmospheric, elegance that subsequent Metroid games don't and maybe now can't because it was something of the time - 2002. It was close enough in year of release to Perfect Dark for some people to even enjoy it as a kind of Joanna Dark Archeology Adventure. Metroid Prime is such a great game that, to me, it's also it's own full stop. I wish that Retro had become a bit more like Team Ico and tried making other games with other mechanics.
This game doesn't have much of a plot? This guy obviously hasn't read the scan logs properly. This game has a very deep and captivating plot, it just doesn't let the plot interfere with the game following the standard Metroid formula. The plot is organised away into the Logbook data as constant cutscenes and events would make it not feel like a Metroid game, just another boring Halo or Call of Duty game.

Matteo Ferrazzi Wii's too, pick up a wii and get the gamecube prime disc .. your set
@Hussy Indeed. I'm seriously disliking Sony's policies though, so I think this will be the last PlayStation console I'll ever buy.
Greg Kasavin and Jeff Gerstmann were my two favorite reviewers. They always were very genuine and into their reviews. Especially Greg Kasavin.
Just beat it for the first time. What an absolutely amazing game!
The world needs more reviewers like Greg. He’s probably the only professional reviewer I enjoy
I still play Metroid Prime to this day. It is so good and has aged incredibly well! Back in 2002 this game was lightyears ahead of its time!
Best graphics 👌
Greg Kasavin, enough said.
Probably my favorite game reviewer ever.

Sensational game! I remember playing it for the first time open mouthed as I couldn't get over the graphics and how seamlessly it had moved to 3D
Man this takes me back!
Here after playing the heck out of Metroid Prime Remastered!
Ah yes, when actual gamers worked at GameSpot...
Yep, went to shit around 10 years a go.
Alex Milburn nah it just went to shit when Kevin vanord left
And its gotten way worse 7 years later!
Greg is my favorite game reviewer of all time. Was nice to run into him one year at E3. Shook his hand and told him that his reviews are amazing.

I’ve never played a Metroid game before and so I came here to watch the original review before playing Metroid Prime Remastered.
what’d you think of it?
The 2023 remaster really did a great job with this game.
Just finished it from Metroid Prime Trilogy. It was very enjoyable and challenging. I can't wait to play the sequel. :D
Metroid prime is the greatest and Greg Kasavin is a legend

this is one game that could def benefit from open world. METAL GEAR DIDNT NEED AN OPEN WORLD KOJIMA WTF

its exactly like a link to the past vs ocarina of time........since i grew up on ALTTP, i prefer it just a little more than OOT
