"Never on Sunday", also known by its original Greek title "Ta Pediá tou Pireá" ("Τα Παιδιά του Πειραιά", The Children of Piraeus), is a popular song written by Manos Hatzidakis[1] and first sung by Melina Mercouri in the film of same name, directed by Jules Dassin and starring Mercouri.[1] The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1960, a first for a foreign-language picture.[3] The film score to the movie was first released on 1 October 1960 by United Artists Records.[2] The song has since been recorded by numerous artists, and has gained various degrees of success throughout the world.

My dads favorite singer of Greece --- she was magical and sadly missed. Only she could sing a song missing the boys of the pier (she played a greek hooker in the film) gotta love the greeks!
Indeed, it was quite amazing how she managed to portray a prostitute singing about her view of life without a hint of cheapness or hideousness and simply turning it into poetry. The music by Manos Hadjidakis and the direction by Jules Dassin certainly elevated it to another level.
I have listened this song as I was young boy. My father listened serbian version of this song (lyrics are changed but melody is the same, "Deca pireja" is Serbian version of the song). This brings a lot of memories to me. Greetings to all Greeks from Serbia.

one, two and three and four kisses
that reach the harbour
(as though) one and two and three and four birds
How I wished I had
one and two and three and four children
once they would all grow up
to become "dashing" lads, for Piraeus's sake
No matter how long I search, I cannot find another harbour
to make me "wild" over, as much as the Piraeus
where, as soon as night falls, (it) pours out "songs" for me
and its "pen-sketches" changes, gets filled up with children
As soon as I walk out my door
there's noone I would not "love"
and as I go to sleep at night
I know that, I know that I will be dreaming of him (/her)
Gems, on the neck I set
and a bead (as a) charm
for at night I await, as I go out to the harbour
a certain "stranger" to find

I am Brazilian and this song is wonderful for my soul..perfect and beautiful Singer.
A wonderful actress! Only she could have acted this role, so marvellously well! Always missed when listening to Never On Sunday!
To my Mother she would write the songs out for me and we would sing this song. I can see her now singing and dancing. Love you and miss you
Maravillosa canción,por Melina Mercuri
Inimitable Melina Mercouri. ..Sa voix me rempli le coeur et me submerge d'émotion 💗
J'aimerais qu'on me l'envoie si c'était possible.
I love music from the debts of the heart, as to things that are special, to the singer... she let her whole heart show-- and WE are touched, by her, forever... thank you, melina...
I loved sitting in the cafe at the port of Pireaus in the days before it was closed off and cafes left. Feral dogs wandered happily about, music was heard, and in my mind, I alway heard Melina singing to her little birds- poulia- fresh off the boat.
I can't believe Melina was around 40 years old when she made this film. She was born 1920 and film came out in 1960
My home was Cyprus - 1993 to 2006. But everywhere for a celebration - it was either Zorba or Melina !
You forgot the diva of all divas Maria Callas
This moved me to tears
Perfect song
Did me as well. Bought back memories 😢
Deixou saudades.
I love this song, it reminds me with Alexandria Egypt where alot of Greek friends were living in the past.
OMG, What a glamorous voice. I an hearing the Original version for the very first time. Don't understand a word, thanks for the translation. But already cant stop hearing the song.

Oh!!! We miss you sooooo much, Melina! We’re still dancing the Misirlou at every single wedding and Bar Mitzvah only because of you. RIP! ❤️

I am not a Greek but absolutely love this song.

It was a great movie... The voice of Melina is... so whispering... She was a great actress...
