  • SpaceX is preparing the launch of the fifth Starship flight test. The window for the launch opens at 7 a.m. local time on Sunday. The company has confirmed on its website, and X, that it is targeting a potential catch of the Super Heavy test vehicle, if flight parameters allow for it.
Window Opens: October 13th at 7AM CDT (12:00 UTC)
Window Closes: October 13th at 8AM CDT (13:00 UTC)
Mission: Starship's fifth fully integrated test flight
Launch location: Orbital Launch Pad A, Starbase, Earth.
    Target orbit: Trans-atmospheric
    Booster: Booster 12
Booster recovery: Orbital Launch Pad A launch tower arms
    Ship: Ship 30
Ship recovery: Will attempt soft splashdown on the Indian Ocean
Rocket trajectory: Straight east over the Gulf of Mexico
Payload mass: Some rust and sand?
Stubby nozzle: Lord help us if there's ever a stubby nozzle on Starship
    Stats:
    · SpaceX's 98th launch of the year and the 2nd launch of the month.
    · Starship's 5th launch
    · 1st Super Heavy recovery attempt (fishing B11's engine section out of the Gulf doesn't count)

Yeah it's genuinely insane how each flight is better than the last. IFT-1 was the greatest launch I've ever seen, then IFT-4 blew it out of the water with the booster splashdown and re-entry plasma, and now IFT-5 is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen ever.

I remember in 2015 when SpaceX landed their first rocket. The reactions then were similar to catching the booster today. Within a few months watching a rocket land itself was no longer a spectacle. As incredible as it was to watch this be achieved, the realization that by this time next year the streams of SpaceX catching the Super Heavy booster will no longer be a spectacle is startling. The next landmark SpaceX stream will probably be when they start launching missions for Mars (although I do think the first crewed Super Heavy flight will be incredible to watch). Humanity is progressing so fast incredibly quickly

Was sitting in a 2nd grade classroom and we all got to hear beeps from Vostok 1 then watch the Mercury space capsules take off. The most memorable one was Apollo 8. What an emotional moment for me as I had been anxiously waiting for this launch to happen! It was so thrilling to watch the chopsticks catching the giant booster. I would say that the booster steered itself into the precise position so that the chopsticks could catch it. Merit is in the booster. I was nervous before the launch and worried that the booster catching might fail. But I believe in SpaceX's know-how and perseverance. Congratulations to Elon Musk and the SpaceX team.

I have watched theseSpaceX videos with my 6 year old daughter since she was about 4 years old. I showed her an old launch of the Space Shuttle and she said 'Where do the rockets land?" I told her, "They don't land. They'd drop them in the ocean, fish them out and then throw them away in the garbage." She looked at me dumbfounded: "THEY'D THROW THEM AWAY IN THE GARBAGE!???!!" She could not wrap her head around that. ~ It is INSANE to me that her generation will grow up watching this and more and never know anything different.

Wow, history being made today, 1950s sci-fi brought to life. the question now is, will it be more financially viable than the shuttle, looks like significant damage to the engines and underskirt, no doubt, more redesign coming, but today, SpaceX pegged the booster catch.

    • @UNSCPILOT
      @UNSCPILOT 38 минут назад

The sad thing is with the shuttle, they had planned numerous upgrades that would have made it safer and easier to maintain but never got the budget for it so they were basically stuck with the most basic version of it.
Starship is less reliant on congress setting it's budget so they can afford to upgrade and refine it continously, and it will eventually have economies of scale helping it as the fleet expands, rather than being stuck with a handful of aging rockets
