      There is a video of a Chinese car trying to autonomously park, gave up and tried to drive away. That's where everyone else is in autonomous parking.

      @@orlock20 I mean my car autonomously parked at the supermarket today, then it autonomously left it's parking spot to come pick me up near the entrance with my groceries, then it drove me home by itself and autonomously parked itself in my driveway again. I think it's doing alright.

      I've been simping for SpaceX since the first launch of the Falcon 9, and I laughed and said this was absurdly optimistic! "This test is definitely going to wreck the tower and cause months of delays." Feels good to be proven wrong.

      I had some doubts they could control the descent precisely enough with reliability. But it seems they have gotten quite good at relighting engines and the massive scale refitting efforts have worked.

    This is amazing it reminds me of the Moon Landing in July 1969, I was 11 and my brother was 6 and our Mum and Dad let us stay up really late to watch the landing on tv.
    We lived on an army Barracks in London, my Dad was in the army and we were about to go on a posting to Beligium.
    It was so amazing to watch a once in a life time thing, no one can ever be the first to land on the moon. It was like something out of a comic or Syfi film.
    This test was something else the precision was brilliant.

      Also imagine it being used to divert the asteroid that'll inevitably hit Earth. It goes both ways. Also imagine being able to launch the ISS's replacement in one go, or something far more capable that the Hubble or James Webb telescopes. Focus on the good and it is more likely that is what we'll get.

      Assuming your not terminally Ill I would say that is highly likely assuming the government doesn't get in the way. If Trump is elected unmanned ships attempting to land on mars are definitely in the cards during his administration. Same with a moon landing... again assuming government aids or at least doesn't impread them.
      Sadly mars is so far away that testing and planning and the journey take a while so manned will take a while.
      Im 26 I have been waiting for something like this since I was 6 years old.

      @@elomboekane4284 Such nonsense. NASA has been an independently recognized organization since 1958, and in that time they and the Soviet space program CREATED the modern space industry. They had a whole campaign of landing people on the moon, for god's sake! Not to mention the probes to Mars, to the outer solar system, to the sun itself, all the space telescopes that have changed our understanding of the universe! But sure...they haven't landed a rocked back on Earth, so I guess all of that doesn't matter.

    I think the last time a spacecraft landed on original launchpad was Thunderbird 3 in the 60s. It was supposed to be complete fiction - now it isn't.

      To be fair, Falcon 9 does it regularly. But it's a tiny thing compared to this one, and lands on its legs on the ground in quite a large area; this thing has to be pin-point.

    Kudos to SpaceX for this transparency in the test where live videos are streamed. NASA would not do this, Boeing will not do this either. In fact, no other operator does this!. No faking, all live and all real. Great catch by Mechazilla.

    They made that look easier than landing it on the ground, plucked out of thin air. Astounding to think that conceivably this booster could just be re-fueled and take the next vehicle up in a short time.

    Keep in mind the sheer size of this rocket. It can theoretically take 100 people to space at a single time. The rocket combo (starship + booster) is larger than the Saturn V rocket that took people to the moon. This isn't a Falcon 9, folks.       that is the hot-staging ring.
      its a shielded ring segment that is there to protect the booster from the Starhips engines during hot-staging.
      happens at 2:51
      it is jettisoned to save weight during landing and fix some unforseen aerodynamic issues.
      temporary fix, they will keep it on the future models

    That booster is twice the size of my church tower and they caught it. As impressive as that is, reentering and soft landing the top part vertically is technically more impressive.
