    Am I the only one who is still undecided for which hair color will give me the look? I am light olive skin with neutral undertones. I do get a nice tan during the summer even though I apply sunscreen everyday twice a day or more. During the fall/winter seasons I become very pale white which I LOVE but I often look sick even if it is 100% my natural hair color. I want to play up my glowing white skin but in a healthy glow way. I am not expecting answers for my issues but rather I would at least like to know that I am not alone. Great information in this video and it reconfirmed that I am indeed neutral. 🥰

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  3 года назад +13

      I absolutely know exactly what you’re talking about! My skin is very similar to that. I can get very dark in the summer and very white in the winter. I tend to lean towards natural cooler tones for myself. Not green necessarily but just a bit cooler as opposed to warmer. So less red as an undertone and more blue if that makes sense. I also try to stay away from the extremes really dark or really white. Which you couldn’t Time for my hair now considering it’s salt and pepper! LOL.

    • @Purple_Zebra316
      @Purple_Zebra316 2 года назад

      What would be interesting is what colour your natural hair colour is and if it changes much in winter? Perhaps it's much darker in winter but more highlights in summer? So perhaps add highlights in winter?

      You´re not alone! I´m also light olive skin but I don´t get a tan due to the heavy amount of moles in my skin. My hair is naturally dark ash blonde with natural red highlights (as my mother was readhead). i am wearing balayage now because I just quitted all about colors. Too light made my hair look greyish, golden blonde highlights became orange with my natural red highlights. It was just a mess!! And my hair is curly, as you may see in my profile picture. So I just don´t know which color fits me best...

    This was a great video, Justin. Very helpful in defining our skin tone and in understanding how one color - say dark brown - can be cool, warm or neutral, too. I don’t color my hair, but I’d think those key color words will help gals, when looking over the plethora of coloring boxes.
    There were just the right amount of illustrations, too. A truly great show. You know what we need! Personally, dessert would have been shots of gals with each skin tone sporting silver, light, medium and darker hair... I’m cool and white (and very fine). I would have loved to see what other gals look like or can do who are in my situation.
    My favorite shot was the entry path into the woods! I’m a sucker for the enveloping closeness. Then, the nicely wandering and enticing bubbling stream before into transformed into the more violent, noisy falls.
    I’m so thankful for you and for your passions.
    Great job!
    Linda

    When I hear about looking at the signs for your undertones, the pink in my skin and blue veins lead to me to say I’m cool toned.
    But I’ve had my hair all different hair colors and have been told I looked good in them all. I suppose this is rare and makes me more neutral.
    I’ve had different shades of brown hair, different shades of red hair, a butter blonde to platinum.
    Now, at 60, I noticed around my face that my hair is silver, which I’ve always admired.
    So, I’m now in the pandemic grow out stage. I’ve got about 4 inches left of the old blonde to grow out and access what my natural hair currently looks like.
    One thing I’ve learned, silver/gray hair is more dry and fragile.
    It’s a learning process.

    This looks so similar to where I live, that is, the Scottish Highlands! I love your videos and watch them all, as someone with strong, curly hair. I am mature (well, 70 next year) and have grass green eyes the same as my cat, and eyelashes/eyebrows that are still thick and black, so am reluctant to go grey as going too light makes me look and feel washed out (I might over 90). I have gone a lot lighter though, to a light natural brown, I used to be very dark brown with a touch of warmth. If I go too warm gold, with colour though, I look flushed an it fades to orange. if I go too cool, I look ashy pale skinned and like I have been dug up! So I try to keep to a natural, neutral tone with just a touch of warmth. I can wear gold or silver, silver better now than before, but its still a bit cool on me, gold is a bit warm. Going lighter though has definately helped me look softer with age.

    I use a different approach. When someone is very warm tone, I add rosiness, neutrals, and some cools to the palette for balance. I’ve seen yellow skinned people wearing very warm, yellow, amber hair and to my eyes, it’s unattractive and swallowing. But when I add some neutral or cool to their vivid or warm tone, they come alive. I’ve also color-balanced cool tone skin by adding warmth, this way the overall image of the whole person looks more neutral. But again, it always depends on the specific shades, like someone with a deep yellow olive skin would not look good in a pastel cool pink, but they might look terrific in a bright Fuchsia. And I’ve put light golden blonde hair on clients with pale pink skin and it looked beautiful. That’s why it’s hard to really have rules on this because every incremental variance makes a difference on the individual.

    I have struggled with the undertone thing too. I might be pale neutral, but I have so many warm freckles that I use a warm foundation that blends them all together. I have hazel eyes. I colored my hair warm brown for years, to cover my grey. At least, I assumed it was grey or silver. I grew it out during lockdown. Turns out it is pure white, healthy and down to my waist, and the color looks so good with my skin that I get complements all the time. And platinum is not supposed to be good with warm skin. Go figure.

    Just found your channel and LOVE all your info and the way you present it - just fabulous energy too. My hair has gotten more porous with age - probably due to blow drying, hormonal changes, and living with well water. I used to be able to dye my hair at home and get great results. Now - with the porosity, it seems to suck up too much color when I try it at home and turns out flat/one dimensional looking and dull and just too dark all over. Then I race to my hairstylist for a fix. I'd like to save some money. Any tips for box color at home for super porous hair? P.S. I normally get a root color to cover grays and then highlights around my face to lighten things up. I'd be willing to give up the highlights if the box color didn't come out so flat looking. Thanks very much! :)

    Great info!

      Thank you! I appreciate that. Absolutely with the highlights! It can be a huge difference. Smaller highlights, sometimes called baby lights, can have a tendency to just make the hair look all over lighter. Thicker highlights have a tendency to add more dimension to the hair. I would ask for a chunkier highlight but nothing ridiculously thick so it looks like racing stripes LOL! This is why I say photos are always the best way to describe what you want because it’s a universal language.

    I am mostly gray but color my hair a medium neutral brown (6N). My coloring leans towards a warm/neutral. My natural hair color was a medium brown with lots of red when in the sun. I would love to go to a lighter color so I could go longer between coloring, which I also think would be more age appropriate (66). But I just don't think I'd like the way I look with a lighter color. I think there might be apps where you can post a picture of yourself then play with hair colors. Do you know of a good one?

      Totally! In my past few videos I’ve started telling people where I was, however in the last couple I’ve decided I want people to guess. So if I don’t see it in the video, look at the pinned comment below and you’ll see that I’ll ask people if they know where I’m at so they can guess. Then in a couple of days I will comment and let people know where I am if they haven’t already guessed it.

    Love the explanations. I feel it leaned toward brown and blonde type hair coloring though. I am thoroughly confused on reds. I been many levels and shades but still unsure which goes with what tones? Help please

    Another’s great video. I didn’t understand levels and now I know I’m a cool level 5 or 6.....still deciding if I want to darken it to 6! So would the highlights need to be a certain shade for cool?

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  3 года назад +1

      Awesome! Great question. If you want to stay cool with the overall look then yes, you’d want to keep the highlights on the cooler side as well. As far as what shade, just a “cool” highlite vs a warm or gold highlite. They don’t have to be a certain level, just a cooler tone of whatever level you decide on if that makes sense.

    Thank you. I enjoyed the science behind the test to determine skin tones. Even thou I have quit dying my hair in Aug 2020 the cool color of the silver hair will match my undertones. This test also explains why I was tired of the color because it was more neutral but pulling out brass. Do u have any suggestions on how to tone down the colored hair as it's growing out? Thx and congrats on exceeding your goals of subscribers.

      You're so welcome! Great question, are you wanting to know how to tone down brassiness in the color as it's growing or trying to break up the grow out line so it doesn't look so obvious as it grows?

      @@justinhickox I would like to tone down the previous colored hair. I did a combo of low lights and high lights a month or 2 after I stopped the coloring. It's blending ok but the ends are faded and orange in color. Thank you for asking and any advise offered.

    I’m in New York but will be in Portland in a few months to visit my son... So hoping I can get an appointment for a cut and color. I had all my extremely long hair cut off for treatments and surgery after a brain injury over a year ago. It is finally getting some length back (almost to bra strap) and I’m looking for a new style. I want something to celebrate my return to life so to speak and have been watching your videos for over a year while I healed and getting my new style from you would be a cherry on top for me...How long in advance do I need to make an appointment?

    Ty! I 'can' wear neutral and pull it off- but I do prefer cool on me personally. Way better for my mindset.
    How can I get a deep vibrant color without going dark brown? I was born blonde and always lighten in front a blonde color - but I want something dramatic and rich, deep looking. Something that says' you are smart'!
    Can I get lift w a blinde colir. My hair is so much fuller w color rather than highlights.(at home or in salon). Thanks for the nature!

    My warm natural brunette hair is quickly turning gray. Will that gray also be warm, or is it possible for warm hair to turn cool once it turns gray and is void of pigment? My skin is warm and I would like to grow out my gray, but not if it is going to clash with the undertone of my skin.

      Great question! Many times yes, but if you’re wanting to color it, it’s important to understand what undertone will work best for your skin. And, oddly enough, sometimes your natural color isn’t always best, seems crazy but my wife falls into that category.

    Still struggling with my stylist. My hair is growing out from blonde (red as a baby & strawberry blonde ages 4-10. Starting getting darker has a teen & put my own highlights in so golden highlights on dark reddish blonde. Fast forward to Covid ; now I have white roots in the front (one of those people who got a white shock of hair on my right side, starting at age 40 - right eyebrow also has more white in it; have them died. Darker blonde roots at back of crown. I am a warm.
    Want to keep white growing out but like British actress Helen Mirren. Do I want highlights or lowlights? Thinking a 10 Blonde but what tone highlight or lowlight to grow out the white but while seamlessly adding a little warmth? Help!!!!!
    I am the woman whose Berner chipped her front teeth. Went on a hike yesterday, she spied a doe & her two fawns & she took off after them. Never seen my 7 year old Berner run that fast...impressive! Thanks

      Haha! Gotta love that right. I’d default to the jewelry test or the vein test. Also you can look at your natural color and see what undertone it has. Then go toward that. It isn’t always spot on but a good starting point.

    No idea where you are. It is beautiful! OKAY, so I'm tripping out. My hair stylist went on "vacation". Coming back this weekend to color my hair. Eh, I'm thinking not. 3 hours in my face when she doesn't wear a mask the whole time. No. So, here's my dilemma. Not sure if you need to address in another video, but I'm doing something THIS WEEK myself. I have different shades of blonde with about 2 inches of dark blonde roots with - yes! - a few grey hairs, that look ironically blonde with the rest of my hair. BUT I am ready to cover the growth. If I pick, let's say, a 8a or 9a (I'm very cool. LOL!) will it cover the blonde highlights and lift the roots to the same shade? Or what do I do. HEEEEELP!
