PlayStation Portal: Better than Expected?

  • Playstation Portal is Sony's new handheld device. However, it's not a native device but instead acts as a streaming device for your home console. You can take this handheld anywhere and as long as you have a WiFi connection, you can run games from home. It doesn't download any games and it's not streaming from a hardcore computer, just your home console.
It's priced at $199 and has a great looking formfactor but is it priced right despite the limitations?

If you leave the PS5 in rest mode you can remote play from anywhere in the world. The portal should work better than phone and tablet remote play. Both are very impressive. I was playing Days Gone a couple of weeks ago 1500 miles away from home for hours and it was a surprisingly flawless experience. I didn't know remote play was so smooth. It's really good. After learning that I understand the portal as a streaming device. It's not a console. It's a sub for your phone and controller. and the price is right.

PS portal does not use the “PS browser” to connect to wifi, it will do it like how your phone does.
And the main reason why sony wouldn’t make a standalone handheld is because most of PS fames are AAA games and developer wouldn’t wanna spend their resources on something that is far inferior to what we play on PS.
In a world where fast internet is almost everywhere, this is the way to go.

If you think about it, its smart of Sony to not try to come our with another PSVITA (RIP), because every PS4/PS5 Game will be available via PS5. They don't need to try to get companies to develop games for it, I already have my PS5 on sleep and play it through Chiaki on my Steamdeck. This is a plus for me because I don't usually game outside my home, but I love to play games before I go to sleep, and now having a native extension to the PS5 with the Dual Sense features. AND ITS ONLY $200. also, the bluetooth thing is a non-issue for me, I don't need yet another pair of headphones, I'll just plug in the ones I already have.

I was never able to play for the longest time because it stuttered every 5 seconds and deemed it unplayable. But I did find a Reddit where that issue is addressed and it has to do with the HDMI cable or something. So I have to disconnect it from the TV in order for Remote Play to work flawlessly. All the games and DLC you have on your console you have access with the "Portal" as long as you have access to wifi no matter where you are... Wow, why can't people see this for what it is, plus moaning about Internet connection when away, most places now have strong 4g /5g so you could easily just hotspot your connection from your phone. Unless you're in a real dead zone that should be more than fast enough to run smoothly. I've been doing this for xbox cloud on my phone for 18 months now, hardly ever get issues, I've usually got access to either decent WiFi or 4g/5g
No Bluetooth, just buy a £5 dongle, done. Or just use wired ear phones. Not really the issue most haters are making it out to be.
Massive advantages to this thing are the price for one, you're getting access to your entire playstation library on the go, not re-buying expensive inferior version of games you already own. No messing about to get your progress to move across to main game. Plus the device is £200 not £400-£500 it would be if it was essentially the ps vita 2. As it would need to compete with the current switch and stream deck style portables.
My only criticism is it has a LCD screen , for £200 that should of been OLED but other that I think this is a fantastic device that is definitely filling a niche hole in the market, I for one don't really like using my phone to stream games, I have to take the phone out of my case each time which is a nightmare as its an all in one case.
I've been hoping for something like this for a while now so I'll definitely be getting it as soon as I can.
Personally thing that stops me making the most out of my switch is the expensive games, I don't mind paying the nintendo exclusives but I hate paying for the third party games i already own on other systems.
PS portal seems like the perfect solution in this day and age as the Internet speeds have drastically increased the last 5 years, my WiFi has gone from 40mbs to 500mbs, the 4g/5g speeds are averaging around 30-50mbs or much faster near town centres.
For alot of people this is the perfect middle ground. There are limitations of course, but it's £200 without the need to purchase games. Exactly what I want.

Your phone is a hot spot and it will be as close to the portal as it is possible because it is with you all the time. Just use the internet from your phone and you can play it literally anywhere, I mean, aren't we all connected to the internet on our phones 24/7?

    • @ToyMCardoso

I believe what should be asked (and I didn't see one person questioning that so far) is how much data will the portal use for every hour of gaming. Now that's a valid question since we pay for a certain "amount" of data monthly on our Cell phones.

PlayStation Portal™ Remote Player can also be played wherever you have access to broadband internet Wi-Fi with at least 5Mbps for use1. For a better play experience, a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps is recommended. People are willing to pay $500 now for a handheld that can play ps4 pro graphics. Just look what steam deck is doing right now.

Native vs remote play. Are you kidding me??
Ps5 on the go, even just streaming is amazing, don’t get me wrong. But you can already do the same thing with your phone.
I personally am interested and will pick one up. It’s 200 bucks so it’s painless. But I totally understand why people are turned off by it.

Reaching ALMOST a quarter of Wii U sales? Wow, that's what steam Deck is doing.

Steam deck is good, I just want to be able to play my ps5 games in my room instead of in my game room at night. Day one buy for me. Those who talk about the backbone don't realize how much of a hassle it is to use and play games on a 6 inch phone

@@stvnoahc7249it’s actually 350-400$ because it doesn’t have speakers, and the only thing that works is Sony’s proprietary headset(s). I guess it would’ve cost them too much to put a simple aux port on it.

No Bluetooth to force you to buy £200 headphones. Over priced.

No way this runs while IN rest mode. Obviously the PS5 would need to be running to process graphics run game etc. You can boot it up with the ps portal if its already in rest mode. Im going to connect to a UPS so its stays in rest mode even if there is a power bump.
