Am a US citizen and lived abroad in two countries, South Korea and Canada. The biggest observation I found is people are generally the same in all three countries. What bothers me the most about the US nowadays is the political discord and extremism. The art of compromise has long been forgotten and may just be our ultimate downfall. We may have “free speech” but what good is it if there’s no unity.
true, Americans don't have unity as they are dividing themselves with racism issues. Moreover, I think US society is too tolerant for drugs and freedom, allowing drug users to trade everywhere, including in schools, etc., and homeless to live anywhere in the center hub of big cities. However, it leads to the consequence that our safety is being invaded. I cannot imagine that living in such the most powerful country in the world still have fear to walk alone and use public transportation at night (I am living in San Jose, California, so I totally understand this issue)
@@TuanNguyen-uq8gz I live in SF and agree with most of what you’re saying. I went to college in central Virginia though (and grew up in NYC) and can say there is a very big difference between big cities and small ones in this country. If you ever have the opportunity to move to a smaller, college town somewhere outside of California I would definitely suggest it as life is usually much better. Less money to be earned but happier and healthier overall with a much lower cost of living and crime rate.
@@TuanNguyen-uq8gz You're right. But ironically, those problems are the result of leftist politics. I grew up poor and I am now upper middle class with only a high school education. It won't happen overnight. It takes strength from within to take initiative and smarts to get where I'm at. I could resign myself to being average but I am always striving to do better. I've traveled to four continents and know exactly what they are talking about. Interesting. I too love the opportunities and values the US has given me. I am forever grateful for being born here. From a lower middle class family but still had great children memories. Moving forward however I am not so sure about keeping my US citizenship. Listening to Andrew at Nomad Capitalist has influenced my perception a bit. Being trapped in poverty is like being trapped in a domestic violence relationship. It's all very well to say it's a free country and therefore everyone has the opportunity to escape such traps- easier said than done.
It’s dumb of Americans to fall for social media shenanigans. I may be wrong but I think most people in the US don’t travel outside of the US, and so they don’t really know the real issues people face in other countries like some South American and Asian countries. Traveling really does change your perspective towards life.
I would imagine Americans travel more than most, actually. Everywhere I've traveled, no matter which continent, I've befriended Americans. US just has a very large population so there are many who obviously don't, but I think the stereotype "Americans don't know anything about other cultures" is extremely incorrect. That's just my perspective, as a Canadian who travels too much.
@@bobby_c07 You may very well I’ve met Americans everywhere you go, but statistically there’s a reason people think Americans are ignorant: it’s because they are. Less than 10% of Americans have a desire to travel outside the states, and less than half even have passports.

I've lived in the Philippines for about two and a half years now and I'm soon moving back to the US. it's very true about noticing little things that a tourist would never see that makes the US a better place to live in many ways. a couple quick examples are little things like the burocractic process is worse than in the US, customer service isn't as good and it's hard to sue people so there are scams everywhere even by legit business, you just don't feel valued as a customer in many places. I was told people always build new houses because they cannot even trust that the old houses were built properly (and this is in a country with earthquakes). that being said at least it's not the government like it is in China.
Just my opinion as a American who lives in Philippines a little each year; both countries have a lot to offer the other does not. There is a reason so many of us Americans go to Philippines to live, and so many Filipinos go to the USA to live. Little things like not being able to drink tap water safely and bring your own toilet paper everywhere in Philippines makes me more grateful every day to be in the USA, the close family relationships and friendships are dearly missed in Mindanao during tourist ban.
True. As a foreigner myself living in the Philippines for some years now, there are things I missed doing in my own country that I can hardly do here. And one thing more, the government here takes long or doesn't at all with regards to addressing issues like reporting a neighbor for using karaoke even when it's already past midnight. That's the reason why my wife and I moved to another city.

Of course the US is a great country to live, (well, as long as you are not poor, or Black, or both.) When people complain about America, it is not because it is an awful place to live; it is because of what the US has been doing to the rest of the world, to poor and weak countries like Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Cuba, the Banana Republics, etc., etc. For over a century, the US has, either directly or indirectly, created much of the chaos, corruptions, coups, deaths, destruction, instability, miseries, suffering and wars in most of the world, especially in Middle East, South America and Africa,( i.e., the "black" and "brown" countries.) Just look at how Africa's fate has changed after America left: after 9/11, America has mostly withdrawn to focus its attention and military resources on the Middle East. It is during this two-decade absence of America that Africa finally got a chance to develop, grow and prosper in peace. Now Africa has some of the fastest developing and growing nations in the world. Don't you forget about or overlook this: Africa is finally able to crawl out of being a "shithole" ONLY BECAUSE Europe and then America have left the continent in peace (to concentrate and fight in the Middle East.) A huge benefit of living in the US is that, while the US goes abroad to invade, occupy and destroy other countries, America itself remains to be a safe haven that is insulated from all the chaos, destruction and miseries it has been creating in and exporting to the "black" and "brown" countries in the Middle East, South America and Africa. America is able to afford its citizens the opportunities that it has deprived other countries via some very unsavory interference and interventions.

Good points about what's great about the USA. I live in the UK and visit my ancestral home in Pakistan frequently. You really miss the little things about life in the UK that go unnoticed because we take them for granted.
@@lifetruthseeking5808 It's a different world. My family in Pakistan live in a rural village in the foothills of the Himalayas. It's so natural, clean, the air is fresher, you drive and you can smell the pine trees. At the same time there is one low quality school, no fire service, police are 30 minutes away by road and if you have a heart attack you're also at least an hour away from medical treatment - 3 hours if it's really serious and you need an operation. I think if you're wealthy life in Pakistan is better, particularly in the big urban cities. You can hire maids, drivers, tutors, private school, private healthcare, all the brands are there in the big cities, life is very good. If you're middle class or working class, life is shit. This is the great thing about the UK. Life for the middle classes or working class might not be awesome, but you can find work, you can pay your bills, schools are free, so is healthcare, university is free up front, the cost in loans which you pay back afterwards if you work and if you earn above a certain threshold. The social safety net provided by the state is so important. The other big thing in the UK is economic opportunity. You can be a software developer in Pakistan and struggle for work, not in the UK though. Most people who try can make it economically in this country without worrying about the next meal. Pakistan is quite disorganised though, or even it's organised chaos. The UK is so much better in that regard, society on the whole is like a well trained dog. People don't litter, we abide by traffic laws, people queue, there is discrimination but it's not brazen and blatent. If a senior politician is travelling in Pakistan the route gets blocked for security - in the UK you can meet them on the bus. It's these little things you appreciate when you don't have them.
Maybe fix the country as a citizen, rather than run off elsewhere, to a country someone else instilled democracy in. I'm not even Pakistani, but just saying. Isn't this why the country is in a mess?
Have lived in USA, Australia, Okinawa, and South Korea. I 100% agree with the statement... that you don't learn what a country is about, just by travelling there. I loved certain aspects about every country I have lived in. I have also hated certain aspects about every country I have lived in. The grass is not always greener in other countries from ones own.
This exactly what I have been telling people, especially the ones who complain all the time about this country. go and try to live the same life you have here aboard. trust me 6-month max and you will be the first one boarding that plane coming back here. I'm from the Middle East and I fleed the authoritarian government where they never even heard of human rights. Always be thankful for what you got here. and there are always better ways to make things better. God bless this country U.S.A.
It completely depends on where you go to. I could not imagine living in the US. There are few countries I would move to. Neither US nor middle east are on my list.

What unity are you referring to? Communism? There is unity, have you been to a college or pro sports event? Or any concert?
@@TuanNguyen-uq8gz You're right. But ironically, those problems are the result of leftist politics. As Jonas said, get out of California (a one party state for decades) and you'll see a very different America. I moved from San Jose to middle America a month ago. I feel like I'm in a different country.
@Pat Gomez You are absolutely right. I think this last year woke a lot of us up to that. Only one side has been compromising, and all it has gotten us is more problems, division, and further absurd demands. It's time to go back on the offensive, and you're seeing that work extremely well in places like Florida and Texas.

I grew up poor and I am now upper middle class with only a high school education. It won't happen overnight. It takes strength from within to take initiative and smarts to get where I'm at. I could resign myself to being average but I am always striving to do better. I've traveled to four continents and know exactly what they are talking about. Being trapped in poverty is like being trapped in a domestic violence relationship. It's all very well to say it's a free country and therefore everyone has the opportunity to escape such traps- easier said than done.
Poor people exist in every country in the world, even countries you consider to be rich.

I felt the same way coming back to the U.S. after living in Asia for a while. It gives you a fresh perspective on America. I loved living in Asia and love America so much more having lived in Asia. You won't understand that until you do it and I strongly encourage you to do so.
Don't you forget about or overlook this: Africa is finally able to crawl out of being a "shithole" ONLY BECAUSE Europe and then America have left the continent in peace (to concentrate and fight in the Middle East.)
A huge benefit of living in the US is that, while the US goes abroad to invade, occupy and destroy other countries, America itself remains to be a safe haven that is insulated from all the chaos, destruction and miseries it has been creating in and exporting to the "black" and "brown" countries in the Middle East, South America and Africa. America is able to afford its citizens the opportunities that it has deprived other countries via some very unsavory interference and interventions.
Simply put: China oppresses people in its own country. America oppresses people in other countries.

Good points about what's great about the USA. I live in the UK and visit my ancestral home in Pakistan frequently. You really miss the little things about life in the UK that go unnoticed because we take them for granted.
How do you think Pakistan compares to England?
@@lavanya_sanatani would you ask A North Korean to stay there and fix it? Pakistan is a lite version of that atm.
