    Lure making is near and dear to my heart! My dad's best friend had a lead smelter. They snuck machine counterweights out of their auto plant, SUPER PURE LEAD. My dad had tons of molds for split-shot for steelhead fishing and 3/4 oz. jigs for Detroit River walleye fishing. He tied all of his own flies and crawler harnesses for Lake Erie.

    Another way to paint jigs, blades, etc. is with an airbrush as I do. Fluid bath gives a great finish for sure but with an (airbrush made for powder paint) you can add detail as I do, or simply use it for single colors for the best finish of all options. I have added a regular airbrush to my arsenal know as well using acrylic paints, but that is a another realm of cost. Great video though Benjamin for those looking to get started. It’s fun, rewarding, and has served a greater cause for me as you know. 👍👍

    I am in Australia... Everything you have spoken about the majority of it all I have had imported into Australia...Since the Australian dollar is weaker than the U.S. dollar my overhead costs have been double if not triple of some of the dollar amounts you mention here...I make bladed lures in spinnerbaits and jigs...I also have a soft plastic injection gun with molds and ingredients all sourced from the USA... I also tie jigs so my chenille marabou bucktail fur rabbit zonkers etc etc etc all hareline products sourced from the USA... My out laid costs have been huge for the last 12 years I have been making my own tackle...My molds are plenty with the majority being DO-IT ....The rewards for me is as you have already explained making custom tackle that suits me...The biggest reward is catching the target fish species when they aren't biting on the generic commercial baits that people buy over the counter to achieve the same result...regards B.J.

    Benjamin, the last two years I have been tying my own rabbit hair jigs for river smallmouth over marabou. The durability of rabbit hair (tied on in strips) is very impressive. You can easily catch 20+ fish on a single jig before they start wearing out. Best part is, big fish love em. Just palmar a cross cut strip up the hook shank and add a straight cut tail. Another excellent material for the big water (Lake Erie) is bear hair in cinnamon brown. When the bite begins to slow on tubes or you see a fish follow your tube back to the boat when you are reeling up.........that's the time to tie on a bear hair jig

    • @brnowak_fishing
      @brnowak_fishing  4 года назад

      That’s super intriguing! I’ll have to check out rabbit hair jigs and how to tie those!!!

    • @michaelmotch6271
      @michaelmotch6271 4 года назад

      @@brnowak_fishing You can get small packets of dyed pre-cut rabbit strips from most fly shops in both "straight cut" and "cross cut" in a variety of colors for about $4 each. You can buy whole dyed hides and cut your own strips for about $15. When a rabbit hair jig first gets wet it has no "life" to it, kinda clumps or collapses down. Your reaction will be, WTF these jigs suck.....then after about 15-20 seconds they literally come to life. Pick them up out of the water to cast and again they collapse to little more than a wet noodle and cast easily with no wind resistance.Sorry if it sounds like I am over selling rabbit hair, but honestly smallmouth just seem to eat them up..........olive is the bomb

    This is awesome info . Living where we can't fish for half the year I have been contemplating making baits . I looked into pouring plastics last winter and the initial cost to start that is much higher then $300. This is definatley something I will consider come fall to take up time during our long off seasons .I am sure those molds and lead pits last a really long time too. So it will definatley save money over time . The cool part would he catching something on a bait you have personally made .Even better giving a buddy a bait you have made and they catch a pb or that on it .Hope all us well bud .

    I have a new lure. The Gold Fish Suspending Bag Lure
    Most fishermen have carried a gold fish home from the fair or store. The fish has enough water to swim freely.
    1. A clear plastic bag durable enough to keep from tearing when a fish strikes.
    The lure bag would have enough volume to hold 1, 2 or up to five minnows or shiners + water, be able to draw close at the top, and have a hook suspended from the bottom of the built in hook eyelet. The bag would also need to have water inlets that the bait fish isn't able to escape through.
    The great thing about this lure idea is that the bait never needs attached to the hook that causes the bait to swim off the hook or not preform properly.
    With the bait fish swimming around in the bag in a natural manner, fish would be more likely to strike right away instead of hesitating.
    The bait bag is then suspended over the water an inch or each suspended in the water. When suspended in the water, just the bottom of the bag should be suspended to ensure the tear drop shape of the bag retains its form.
    This type of lure is meant to make the fish strike from the bottom of the lure.
    Shad Armor for your bait.
    A plastic lure body that allows a single shad to be inserted would also catch more fish. The Shad Armor would have holes in the body to allow fresh water in to keep the shad alive longer. The armor would have hooks and a bill like a normal lure.
    Building the bait door would be the most difficult part of the lure. Maybe a a spin loaded double latch bait door.
    Can haz much terz Mr. Bass.

    Ben you're awesome, and I'm about to go shopping to get started this winter. If you were dragging more than swimming your hair jig which head would you use? In my neck of the woods the water is decent clarity but not the gin clear of the far northern waters. I plan on using mostly 3/32 lesser, 1/8 mostly, & 3/16 lesser . I'm thinking ball head better for dragging, and though they do sell a mold with the bend wire keeper, I'm not sure I'll need with the 1/8 being main weight. Those molds are just too inefficient (cavity wise) to cover my 3 weights. I could always use a little glue if that piece of plastic for extra weight seems necessary. What do you think?

    • @brnowak_fishing
      @brnowak_fishing  2 года назад

      Thank you Bruce! If you’re dragging a hair jig, the ball head would work well. The one I use is the shake-it head mold with the 90* vertical line tie, but there are a lot of really good options out there
