In the movie optimus tells ironhide they were low on energy and the decepticons had took back cybertron. The autobots were weaker and that's why alot of them died so easily compared to the decepticons that's the way I always saw it
They didn't die because it was a light-hearted show for kids. That wouldn't have fit the tone. Even season 3, with its darker tone didn't have any deaths. What that says to me is that the writers didn't want to do that to us. The deaths in the movie were from the Hasbro mandate, as we know. I guess I don't need an in-universe explanation for that. Classic 1980s greed.

There must have been a further change by Season 3 though, because suddenly we're back to no deaths! Maybe both sides developed better shielding?
