I agree with you 100% about the non-3C Minion. Mistakenly bought one to replace an XR4 up front and hated it. No grip. Put it on the rear and got a 3C MaxTerra and it’s awesome. Can’t believe how different they feel! Nice explanation of the differences between the DD vs downhill casing. I just thought they were the same.

Then, just as everyone is starting to get their heads around it, they change it all for something completely new.. Sometimes I think marketing and branding people live in their own little world.
Thank you so much for making this clear my biggest complaint right now is a huge amount of wash out in the front... was about to pull the trigger on a dual compound and realize what's the extra $20 if it's going to be better and that much better
Hey man quick question, I just got a 3c compound minion instead of a dual compound, will the life of the tire be significantly different? was actually going for the dual compound but accidentally got a 3c
It depends if you put it up front or out back. Out back it will wear quicker, but up front it will only be of benefit. You’ll still get long life out of it but it will give you much more grip and confidence
Been running the Assegai in EXO+ Maxx Terra out front since it came spec'd on my new bike. Binned it HARD! last weekend with a front wheel washout on loose over hard at cobblers. Going to try the Maxx grip on the front i think after that haha!
hydrodynamica def try the maxx grip, its considerably better. The assegai maxx terra does seem to wash the front a little on hardpack loose stuff. Thats what I’ve noticed anyway
Work mate!! Definitely dhf max grip up front for me max terra rear. Don’t think I have tried duel compound rear. Do you favour duel compound rear? Obviously lasts longer but do you sacrifice a lot of grip?
How good is the aggressor DD 2.5. Especially for dry/hardpack/loose over hardpack that we have at the moment. Still think it will struggle in winter though, enter the dhf DD 2.5.
Calum Cullis yeah its killer. Its a 42a durometer compound all over which is what I believe they use on the center knobs of the maxx grip, and then the maxx grip has the 40a on the side knobs. The old “Slow Reezay” compound was 40a all over.
Great video. Looking at a Dissector for the rear and trying to decide between Dual Compound and 3C Max Terra. Looking for a little more grip than my current Rekon 3C Max Terra but without much more rolling resistance. Any thoughts?
how you bro.....whats your opinion on dual compound dhf vs aggressor.....only had a exo+3c dhf in rear loved it but so much slower compared to aggressor on the flatter tracks.....does the dual dhf roll ok c heers
catebutt yeah the dual dhf is close to the same as the aggressor, maybe a little slower but I’d say theres little in it. I agree, the 3c dhf DD i had on feels quite slow to pedal compared to the Aggressor
dean088 ah if your locals dont have one or can’t get one for you, I’d go Mountainbikes Direct and order it online. I get nearly all of what I need from my local shops in Adelaide. They can get most stuff in for me within a week with a phone call. MTB Direct for anything in a rush or not available local
Hi sir. Ive planning to change my tire setup to dhr2 27.5x2.4 3c maxxterra front and rear. But couldnt decide whether to get the dual or 3. What are the pros and cons of dual over 3c vice versa? Want to know if its just a marketing strategy? How much difference in grip and rolling resistance? Is it noticable? Huge difference? The main reason why I want to get the dual is cause of the tan color and longetivity of the thread. The price not so,if its worth it. ----- For ref. Ive been using 2.8 rekon plus tires 3c for over a year and felt fast on climbs and downhills (feels supple too). But it lacks cornering grip~ Just couldnt trust it, it will let go. Have tried dhr2 rear, dhf front both 3c (really good, got it from one of your vid) Tried also the aggressor 2.5wt dual compound rear. But didnt like it. Felt stiff, slippery. Even on pavement dhr2 felt faster and grippier. I dont know if its because of the thread design or because if its because of the compound :( The tire that I want to try is definitely dhr2 front and rear but just couldnt decide what compound. :( Thanks in advance.
3c up front most definitely. The extra grip from the softer rubber is much safer. The Dual compound will feel similar to the aggressor as they both use around 60a rubber on all the knobs. The dual compound is faster with less grip than the 3c. Good for the rear to keep the bike fast, 3c in the rear for more control
@@mtbtelly5522 thanks a lot for the answer ! So what modell would be the fastest when it comes to speed and rolling resistance ? Ikon ? Aggressor ? Ardent ? Or forekaster ?
I ride a lot of Trestle Bike park in Colorado then a bit of trail around front range and some inner mountains. Last day at trestle I happened to puncture both my tires on one drop. Very unlucky I know but would the Double Down be enough or should I go DH all the way? Currently found a maxxis assegai in 3c dd or dh casing I'd use for front Want to try an Aggressor on rear can only find it in DC double down would that be enough for my rear tire? Or should I find a DH casing? Or been deciding if I go two assegai dh tires. Sorry for all the questions any insight helps. New to the tire game always ran what came with it. But think I'm sticking with this remedy
Spencer Storck yeah doubledowns should be good. A dh casing on the back if you want ultimate protection, but will be a bit of a slug to pedal. Aggressor only comes in dual compound but its fine out back. I currently have a dhf dd out back and its killer, a little more demanding on climbs but hauls everywhere else. Aggressor climbs better.
Cam Wells in EXO casing yeah the maxx terra is great for grip and rolling in most conditions. But the maxx grip feels more supple and holds on tighter in the loose corners. They both have similar lifespans as well. The Double Down maxx terra feels a little softer than the exo version as well
MTB Telly thanks mate , always appreciate your advice , I’m on a new remedy which came with bontrager se4 2.6 , enjoyed the feel of the wide tyres over summer , but soon as the wet weather hit , I lacked confidence in the front . Put on the max grip 3c 2.5 , fantastic grip wise . But I’m kind of missing the feel of the wider tyre as well . Lots of exposed roots and rocks etc where I ride , maybe it’s just an adjustment thing . Looked up maxxis 2.6 tyres out of interest , can only see max terra for sale , not sure if they do a max grip in a 2.6 ? Have you ridden on the wider tyres ?
MTB Telly do you know much about the wtb stuff ? Someone I know who rides in Nz , who has always ridden maxis dhf on the front swears by the new wtb vigilante as a front tyre now .
Tom M its well worth it for the extra grip. Up front they hardly wear, out back they wear quite quickly so you’re best with a maxx grip up front, and a 2c or maxx terra out back
Thanks for the vid as this was confusing to me. I still need some guidance here: - Assegai 3C Maxx Grip DD (front) - Minion DHR2 3C Maxx Terra EXO+ (rear) Would this be a good Combo? Or is the rear casing too weak? Thanks
I’d always opt for the lighter casing up front as the rear takes the hardest hits and is most likely to get cut. If you’re gonna go dd up front, definitely go dd out back as well

lol everyone replacing their xr4s up front. me too mate. love it's weight though.
XR4 dual compound is 61a middle and 50a on side which why it felt better than the DC Minion

DHR2 3C maxx terra DD on the back DHF 3C maxx grip on the front👌

Hi Telly. One question for you buddy. Does the reinforced sidewalls casings reduce squirming in a significant way? Thanks!
Abel Ramos the DH casings feel more robust than the exo casings, the DD casings are slightly stronger than the exo but not as robust as the DH casings
