@@alsimms8003 I heard both. They're fun (Phantom) and beautiful (Sleeping Sun). Then Floor comes along and sings the Phantom (fun and beautiful) and Sleeping Sun (beautiful raised to the power of chills). As much as I like and respect Tarja, I prefer Floor on both songs.
i wasn't suggesting that one is better because i love them both as well. moreover, Floors's best classical voice is different from Tarja's . i just wanted to know if you've heard it and what you thought of it.

I love Tarja's voice!!
Fun(ish) fact: this was the first song I heard from this band other than nemo, which was in the radio in Finland all the time. But my friend showed me this video, and I was instantly hooked, started to play drums, and later guitar, and I'm still on that road. This band changed my life.

Good job! NIghtwish had 3 singers, Tarja, Anette and Floor. They are all great performers.Tarja phenomenal Operatic voice and presence, Anettte a lighter poppier voice and Floor a perfect combination of the two and the perfect fit for NW. All of them deserve credit of making NW as we know it now. Please stay in this path and do not compare them. they are different but all as important to the history of NW. Cheers

Oh man, that brings back memories. I love Floor, and in my opinion, she completes the band. However, it was Tarja that drew me in to Nightwish in the first place back in the late 90's. I'm glad you guys are checking out the full spectrum of Nightwish. Tarja's version of Sleeping Sun is one of my all time favorite songs, and has been on my going to sleep playlist for most of a decade. Annette, while not my favorite from a stylistic stand point, sings my favorite version of The Islander. Then we have Floor, who as you know, has become somewhat of a phenomenon. You're embarking on a journey my friends, a journey I have already been over for most of 2 decades. In many ways, I'm jealous. It's been a while since I had that brain melting experience of hearing a new Nightwish track. Now if only 2020, and the new album, would get here already....

I like all the Nightwish female vocalists, but still I must say that while both Tarja & Anette were great performing the songs Tuomas wrote to them, Floor not only performs them but interprets them and gives them life in a unique and gorgeous way, which is just out of this world.

Tuomas composes most pf the music and lyrics for Nightwish. There is a lot to discover. Nightwish is a full on epic band with lots of different styles of music all wrapped up in one great package! Great video reaction again boys!

Hello from Finland! :) Tarja's name is pronounced a bit like Tar-Ya, with a rolling R. Finnish names can be difficult to pronounce, especially if they have diphthongs. Like Tuomas. :)
I would live to see you react to Floor's version from Wacken 2013. She is really rocking the song! :)

Tarja doesn't really sound very good here (as some already have mentioned: she had the flu). "End of an era" is (imo) famous, cause 1.) it shows the success, the band had at that time, and 2.) it's a historical event, because Tarja was getting fired right after this concert. Tarja had some great moments there (Phantom of the opera, Slaying the dreamer, Sleeping sun, Creek Mary's blood, Over the hills and far away), but if you wanna hear something with her real live power, I recommend stuff from the "From wishes to eternity" dvd. (Swanheart, The kinslayer, Wishmaster, Wanderlust).
We have learnt recently she left in not so very good circumstances 😕 we'll be checking out plenty more of Tarja as time goes by for sure 😉-dave

Tarja for me is to operatic. Annette to pop. But with floor is nw perfect. A beautiful couple of epicness. Floor can meral, operatic and ger stagepresent is unbelievable

@@HypeTrain-Follow If you guys want to do a reaction to Nightwish with Anette, let me recommend to you "Last Ride of the Day" from Montreaux Jazz Festival in 2012. There are not too many good quality live recordings from Anette era and people often give her too much crap, because the cell phone live videos they've seen are from shows when she wasn't at her best form, trying to sing songs made for Tarja's operatic vocals. She is actually a really good singer and she does well on the albums. It's a beast of a song and it's one of the songs that Anette did really well: ruclips.net/video/pnvRtLH5Gtg/видео.html

Great reaction again! I'm so glad you decided to try the whole range that Nightwish had to offer. For a lot of us in the Nightwish army it all started with Tarja. The rivalry about who is better is unnecessary, they all brought something to the band that made them grow to the point where they're now and that's just awesome. My personal preference lies with Floor but Tarja definitely got the spark starting.
Like I said in another comment: if you're going to check out Floor Jansen on Beste Zangers, please do a couple of her solo performances (Vilja lied, Mama and Que Se Siente for example) before you go to the grand finale with Phantom Of The Opera.
Agreed! Each singer should be compared on their own merit. We'll be reacting to all 3 of them over time. Not sure when we'll get round to The Beste Zangers but we'll probably cover more than 1 song - dave

Nice reaction guys, Tarja was a great singer in Nightwish and she sang the best songs from this band in my opinion. Although I preffer most of the versions that Floor Jansen has done, I mean, I really enjoy her voice. You should react to Romanticide (Wacken Live) or The Greates Show on Earth (Tampere Live), both of the so great and with a unique music soul

Tarja still remains my favourite of the three Nightwish singers, though I do absolutely love Floor as well and think she's perfect for the band as well. Tarja is just ever so slightly better in my opinion, but it's virtually a tie between the two. I like Anette as well, but she's not as good a fit for the band as the other two are.

While Floor and Annette are great singers, Nightwish will always be with Tarja, as it's just not the same anymore without Tarja

About Annette:
she very good singer, but her singing doesn't match up well with nightwish's music, as she's more a pop singer, which doesn't go with nightwish at all, her singing with nightwish makes it sound like an 80s band and music and song...

Nightwish (it's music) was created for working with Tarja's singing, so while Floor is almost a replacement for Tarja, she's still a bit different, and so her singing doesn't quite match up with nightwish's music (very close though, she's almost a replacement for Tarja, definitely the best we could ever hope for, as no one can replace Tarja truly)
so, for any who don't know, Nightwish's order of singers:
1. Tarja (the original and whom Nightwish and its music was created for her singing)
2. Annette (just didn't match up with nightwish's music, and so, this was a pretty bleak time for nightwish, especially with how perfect Tarja was)
3. Floor (the current singer for nightwish: finally, nightwish got the best replacement that was possible for Tarja, redeeming itself in the world, but as good as Floor is, she's not Tarja, and while her singing goes really close to well with nightwish, it's still slightly off, where's tarja's singing went perfectly with nightwish, as it was created to go with Tarja's singing)

You should do the version with Floor next & see what you think. Both great versions but different.
this can not be stressed strongly enough Toumas sported the original pirate look well before Johny Depp stole it for his own purposes. Toumas writes all the song lyrics. i stopped listening to them when they shoved Tarja out. i was obsessed, there , with her for a bit but i am much better now. Annete had a good stage presence but her voice was not meant for symphonic metal. Floor has been a metal vocalist for many years but until she took over for Annete i did not know she had such beautiful classical voice as well., lamentably she uses it very sparingly.
Its awesome your showing love to the past vocalists! That being said tarja and anettes live performances can be a hit or miss sometimes (more so annete)😅, love all the nightwish ladies tho!

honestly , dark chest of wonders is not exactly her best performance to me. Try listening to the phantom of the opera if u want to hear tarja at her best
This was a duet with Tapio Wilska on the album, she did solo here. On the new crewish album Tapio & Tarja recorded a death metal ( for him) version of Dark Chest of Wonders for an album called Twice. In joke there as its the 2nd Crewish album by the stage crew to help them earn some money during lockdown. NW as a band gave them permission and Tarja who is super kind and sweet agreed to do a reprise for them. Getting Tapio back a bonus. The other joke is that Dark Chest of Wonders is from ONCE (2004) the album they were touring for. The 5th.
The tour was called ONCE upon a tour at the time. This was Nightwish's triumphant homecoming back to Finland. So it was recorded because it was always going to be on a DVD. After they fired her this became known as The End of an Era. 9 years. 5 albums. 2 full DVD concerts. Festivals etc they made their own genre of music. I don't say they were the only ones, just you won't name a band with world wide fame who did it before them to follow in their footsteps. They blazed the trail. There was no roadmap on how to mix symphonic style, chamber music and heavy metal.
Fair to say that Tarja created her own path. Still does to this day. Putting things together you would never expect. Like Finnish folk songs and famed poetry together with Argentinan Tango music by their most famous musician.
A case of experimenting and making it work! Marcello is Argentinian and they adopted Tarja as their own.😅 who can blame them.
BTW for anyone who didn't know Floor and Tarja met when Floor's first band After forever opened for Nightwish some 20 years ago.
It was Tarja who when asked for her blessing in 2010 by Floor to join NW granted it. Again ask anyone who knows her, Tarja is generous, kind and humble.
She does not go out and sing, write and tour because of financial need. She needs the creative outlet for her energy.
Her work across 10 albums, festivals, DVDs, her side project Outlanders an electronic album 10 years in the making are samples of what she can do when she turns her mind to it.

I love Tarja on the studio albums but much prefer Floor live and on stage. I prefer Floor’s version of this, her stage presence is mesmerizing. Just don’t get that with Tarja. My favorite Nightwish album is Tarja’s though. I still like Tarja, just not as much live. Floor spoiled me on live shows and stage presence.
Tarja is great. But Floor is PHENOMENAL!!!
I love Tarja's warm dark tones, really a great Mezzo sound. I don't like her wide, "old lady" vibrato. She sounds like she's 80 years old. Men sound like that too but they're usually in their 70s when their vibratos go wide.

JUST AN OPINION! Tarja was allways struggeling. perfoms like making a fight with herself,. running and moving on stage as someone on a speeddate. in the end she was bound to stop with Nightwish. one way ore an other. however the studio recordings are fenomenal! with her projects and band after and now she's far more in balance with here talent and capabillities. the diversity of Floors voice, just happens to blend and mix better with te band. they compliment each other. particularly in the live performens. she's a fenomenal stage presence. that's a gift! not a talent..
I like those little operatic "staccato" notes Tarja does, but Floor doesn't. In overall this song still goes to Floor by 10-9. In this concert Tarja seemed to "overact" a little bit too much compared to many others (just a little. I still love this DVD). Same thing I've seen happening with Floor's 2018 performances. Trying too much is usually a bad thing, especially when you have that talent, and you really don't need to.
While I love Tarja, I like her better in studio versions than live, for some reason. For this concert I like the High Hopes cover and Phantom of the Opera, and that is just from the top of my head
Now you can listen Floor (same song) and you will see that it was Floors song since the beginning even when she was out of the picture

I don't understand all the singer hate from one to the other. Had we not had the past we would not have the present. Why can't we all just enjoy the band no matter what singer we have. They all have their moments.
Compared to Floor singing this, this is second rate. I no longer think there is a song that Floor has sung, that sounds better with Tarja.
Check out the Wacken version with Floor. I think that one is more powerful but I’d like to hear what you think. Have fun!

Respect to Tarja, but....... Floor is the Queen of Metal. Floor owns the Nightwish songs. Regardless of who sang them first or who they were written for, Floor owns all of them.
The only songs she does not own are the songs she not sung yet. :-)

Hmm... Tarja's singing is alright but not more than that. Her pronunciation of English makes it a less enjoyable experience, than it could have been, unfortunately.
