You can always see on Elon how excited he is to be talking to someone. Last time I've seen him this excited was when he was talking to Tim Dodd (Everyday Astronaut) after the Starship presentation in Boca Chica.
This is a rare Elon interview for one reason: it's from someone who deeply understands vehicles -- no nonsense, no fluff, just an interesting discussion between two engineers.
Elon is such a gentleman. I love his demeanor and humble behavior... Not for a second did he act as if he was better or smarter than Munro... straight heart to heart. Great interview. Thank you Munro.
This is the most incredibly amazing interview of a CEO being asked about the bad things about their product, and the CEO answering those questions in not only a non-defensive manner, but also agreeing with the interviewer! I have NEVER EVER seen ANYTHING like this before!
That's kinda what I liked about it too! I just wish this whole EV "market" was a naturally developing market, rather than forced by government and those powerful enough to "inject" the poisons of collectivism and regulation. All our government is doing is distorting, even destroying, free-market provided choices. Taxing their "disapproved" choices and subsidizing the "approved" choices. It's pure market manipulation, coercion, bribery and theft which amounts to the DEPRIVATION of human rights in this case! Special interest cabals seem to be in power these days and they DON'T GIVE a DAMN about who they hurt or whose rights they infringe upon! And as Americans... we should all say NO MORE! Their agenda does not end well for human freedom! Any truly free market is one that benefits the maximum number of people on BOTH sides of the sale!!! How truly STUPID do people have to remain, not to realize this fundamental truth of the "results oriented" decisions that naturally exist when people are free? All "buyers" pay, and sellers sell, based on their individual perception of the value to each party! When a consumer decides to buy (exchange their production) for "a thing" (the sellers result of production) - BOTH benefit! The free market is SO MUCH MORE A BEAUTIFUL thing over Fascism and other forms of collectivist control as to be compared to the awesomeness of the Rocky Mountains or the Fascism of a sewage treatment plant! QUESTION: What happened to the patents issued to inventors for wildly increasing the MPG of a Cadillac by injecting H2O into modified carbs, reducing both fossil fuel consumption per mile and emissions? That was in the 70's! So, Exxon is allowed to "buy up" the rights to the invention and keep it from the public - PERMANENTLY!? What? That may be "legal" - but it should NOT be legal! The whole IDEA behind Patents is to BRING THAT PRODUCT TO MARKET and not have the inventor undercut by reverse engineering or depriving the inventor/investors of recouping costs and profiting from their efforts BY producing and OFFERING FOR SALE their invention! If THAT is NOT the function of patents, then what the hell IS THE PURPOSE of having Patents AT ALL? #PatentReformNow #FreedomNow #OpenCompetition #NoCabals #NoCronyCapitalism #NoFascism ruclips.net/video/YAtLTLiqNwg/видео.html

Hats off to musk i this interview- he showed me a lot more depth and maturity than I had appreciated. But lets pump the brakes a bit, Tesla fan boys. This is my third time watching this. Every time I see it, it blows me away. This is to me anyway, the epitome of what humanity can ultimately become. Here you have two people. Old school Sandy Munro, who in essence was never old school, but on the cutting edge of engineering particularly in the automotive industry and by now the richest man on earth who is completely revolutionizing the world on many fronts, having a conversation, In that whole interview all I heard was a discussion about the product and all that's involved in moving it forward. Not a single word of arrogance or condescension from either of them. Just a couple of incredible engineers who get it...REALLY get it. I have never seen anyone interviewing Elon Musk who was able to bring out how Elon thinks and how he processes information in order to bring about the best possible outcome, than Sandy Munro. This world desperately needs more you two. Of course then, you would need to be understood. And that my friends is a different story. Thanks to you both.

They [expected] to immediately start at the top of the pay-scale of that company because they had an MBA, but don't know shit about the company at all.!
At first Elon surprises you with all his knowledge on car manufacturing... then you rememeber he also builds spaceships... this guy is a living legend, kudos to Sandy for delivering a great interview, professional reporters should take notes!
I'm thrilled that you got to do this--no one deserves to have a sit-down with him more than you, sir. Great to hear two of the world's greatest living engineers like this!
Agree. Sandy got the interview on showing up because Elon respects Sandy and his honest opinions and wanted to show it and meet Sandy as much as Sandy wanted to meet Elon.
Yes come back three years from now and do the same interview and hopefully Sandy would be starting with “ That small European Hatchback Car is amazing” 👍😁
Agreed. Interviewers who talk shop with Elon are the best. Get so tired of dumb interviews with the same stupid questions "why do you want to go to mars?", and Elong seems bored during those interviews with the same responses over and over. Absolutely Brilliant interview. The respect that Elon shows for Sandy is richly deserved. There was no unnessary fanboy content in the interview. Just concise engineering facts. questions, and comments from one of the most respected auto engineers on the planet Aka Sandy Munro. I really loved this interview thank you.
Well, its kinda different.. Elon knows that Sandy knows his stuff.. and has been around for a long time and has seen it all.. and its really no different than him talking to one of his own enginners... He knows sandy won't really talk about as much anything thats corporate, earnings... etcs.. he only cares about automotive design... it usually brings out the inner scientist/enginner from within.
@@johanhalvarsson2148 Some people on youtube and other social sites should try that. There were a bunch of Tesla fanboys up in arms when Sandy critiqued the car initially then they loved him once he gave positive reviews on later models. Elon openly admitted there with issues with the older cars and that there are still issues with the new car. They fix some. Others are harder to fix because they require taking down entire assembly lines. Unlike the other OEMS, he recognizes the issues and knows they need to be address eventually. The OEMS ignore the issues as long as the cars keeps selling until they get to a point where a competitor has a clearly superior product and they won't be able to do anything about it for several years.
I became familiar with Sandy's company when the company I worked for used their services to evaluate and redesign an existing product. The results eliminated 75% of the cost while meeting all performance requirements. Sandy knows his stuff and this video shows the breadth and depth of Elon Musk's understanding of product design and development. Good show!
Weren't they intimidated/impressed by each other until the respect was palpable from both sides? There is genuine admiration from Sandy and while he's not demonstrating it too much, Elon has much respect for Sandy too. Smart people like to have smart discussions.
Elon gets comfortable and the fluidity of his speech picks up when he knows he's not talking to an idiot and therefore doesn't have to try and "dumb things down" so that they have half a clue what he's talking about. I saw a similar interview at Space X when Elon was talking rocketry with Tim Dodd, "The Everyday Astronaut Guy".
@@claytonroot806 I was thinking of that Tim Dodd one also. When an interview turns into a *conversation* between two guys who respect each other's knowledge base, and the interviewee knows he doesn't have to go over the same rote B.S. basics, that when it gets excellent. These two guys just geeking out over engineering and production - that's gold.
Fascinating interview. This will turn into your most popular video in no time. I hope Elon entertains more interviews with Sandy in the near future. Thank you!!
@@Shawn_M I agree. Watching him in interviews I've noticed that he doesn't take things personally. He looks at negative comments as positive improvements.
As part of a course I had to follow for my Taxi driver permit, I drove a Model 3 for 2 hours today (first time). Same metallic milk white, I have to say it looks fabulous. The interior finish is excellent for a €50,000 EV. Battery was tad small (55 kWh) but the model 3 is extremely sleek and that extends the range considerably. I forgot to ask the actual range in the instructor's experience. But it is a smashing car, can't say anything else. Literally everything is controlled digitally, right down to mirrors, seat, door openers, everything. Although that could also comprise a weakness, I think the car is excellent value for money.
Quote List: “Organizational structure errors manifest themself in the product” “It’s silicon, LA is silicone valley” “Shorting is a vice disguised as a virtue” “A car that does not have self driving in the future, will be about as popular as a horse” “A lot of right answers to the wrong questions”
Best interview of Elon in past 5 years. Relaxed, logical and on point. Thanks Sandy, you've brought Elon down to the masses. I felt like I was sitting there.
This and the Interview with Tim Dodd were by far the best Interviews I´ve ever seen with Elon Musk and I think they were both incredibly appreciated by Musk. Sandy Munro and Tim Dodd understand what Elon is talking about and can actually react on his answers rather than asking the next thing.
Exactly! For example, even though Sandy admitted he doesn't fully understand how the machine learning works, he still managed to get interesting information on that topic from Elon. Sandy isn't afraid to show that there are topics he knows less about and that is precious. That fear of showing a lack of knowledge by the interviewer has killed so many interviews taken with Elon. And the lack of knowledge is then apparently visible anyway. In nearly no interviews with Elon do the interviewers actually carry on with the argument. It is so annoying when they just move on to the next question, when they do not understand the topic. The last interview on clubhouse was excruciating to listen to. Wouldn't you agree?
Thanks for the interview! These down-to-earth conversations are awesome. Elon's willingness to admit faults boosts my confidence in his work more than any thing else. As an engineer myself, as soon as someone starts to avoid or justify problems in a design or process I immediately assume the worst. Publicly embracing the engineering process with customers is far more powerful than many may realize. Thought I'd point that out
The breadth of knowledge sat on both sides of that table is extraordinary. What really hits home is how comfortable the CEO is talking about the detail of the products and the detail of the knowledge of not only the technical detail, but the business detail and focus as well. Elon Musk is really the whole package. Can you imagine this conversation with any other CEO. There would be an army of specialists and lawyers backing them up. Not many things you see or hear are truly awesome, but this interview is one of those for sure.
I think the only other CEO with the technical expertise and knowledge to understand his/her company's products at the micro level would be Dr. Lisa Su of AMD. It's no coincidence that AMD is killing it also.
Not just the car. The software, the neural net, the AI chip, the manufacturing processes, the material science related to the giga casting, the battery chemistry and manufacturing, the power management system, the solar tech, the energy storage installations, the autobidder AI and so much more. Edit: Forgot to mention rocket tech, satellite tech, HVAC systems, materials science, tunnels & tunneling tech, neural nets and neural implants and brain-machine interaction. Let me know if I am still missing some scientific/technological areas where this superhuman is an expert and/or is disrupting fields based on them.
and the technology and why you would engineer it one way versus another. You have to be more than a figurehead that gives polished presentations if you want to be innovative and efficient.
You don't make it to CEO at any top company without understanding the product. We like Elon because he makes bold promises and delivers (sometimes the timing is off).
I love how Elon takes a "fuzzy" topic like "comfy seats" and immediately boils it down to engineering first principles with the whole equalizing pressure points thing. Amazing.

I just love the last part when Elon talks about people who die on car accidents, he's expression is priceless and tells a lot about him as a human being, amazing interview
The thing that struck me the most was Elon choking up slightly when he thought about the responsibility he felt to prevent 1 million deaths than 10 million serious injuries a year from car crashes. He seems to be both a humble genius and a true humanitarian
Yes he is very involved in almost every aspect of the company. It is mind boggling to me that this is not the norm. No wonder so many companies utterly fail to adapt or change. They lack knowledge and or vision from a leader, not a boss.
It is jaw dropping the amount of detail that he can answer to any random interview question about every aspect of not only Tesla and Spacex....but also Neuralink and Boring. We all have worked for and seen CEOs whose entire plan is to lock themselves up in their office to appear busy but, in fact, are merely hiding from accountability. I think most of us get it, this dude Elon knows his shitt and always pushes to reach the goals he calculates in his mind..and is honest and open during the entire process.
I love seeing Elon interact with people that are knowledgeable, his attention to details really shines through. There are not many celebrity’s I would really love to meet, but would love to just say “hi” to Elon. Keep up the good work!
Terrific interview! I'm sharing this with my boss and colleagues tomorrow at work. We're not in the automotive business, but there are lessons here for anyone doing production.
It's so exciting to live in an age where two engineers can get together, have an interesting conversation and have it broadcast to everyone around the world. Before the age of the internet the only things you'd hear from around the world would be greatly curated journalist interviews. Which as we've seen usually isn't nearly as interesting with someone like Tesla, as engineer-to-engineer communication.
I can not believe my eyes and ears that I am able to get access to this interview for free over the internet as viewed in my living room. Thank you, Sandy and team :) ps. the handshake was symbolic of a job well done.
You're right, what we just witnessed was an insider board room discussion between two head engineers (and that interview was actually in a conference board room haha). We really live in the age of information democratization.
Watched this a few times now, wish you can gt the chance to do it again. It's like re-watching my favorite sports game time & time again. So many new aspects that you might have missed & can understand & enjoy upon further watching/listening.
Thanks Sandy, one of the best interviews in history! Hard to imagine how a CEO can know so much detail about their company's products or services. Guess that's the reason for Tesla's valuation
Two things Sandy, as a guy older than you I loved hearing you say you "felt like a kid again" driving your first Tesla. That was my experience as well. The other regards the Tesla seats. I'm a former Audi fan and my last Audi (traded in for a 2016 MS) had beautiful seats which extended under the thighs. Yet on any long trip I'd have leg cramping. None of that with my Tesla. GREAT SHOW. THX!!!!!
This is precisely the explanation of Tesla’s panel gap issues. The errors that are in their production are due to these errors in design of the underlying assembly, which is due to their original mistakes how the organization attacked these challenges from the start. They are figuring it all out and finding better solutions, the mega castings, then even their best competitors. And in the near future they will be best at what they were worst at. The paint issues goes to another quote.. hard to change the wheels going 80 mph.. their paint shop was inherited old tech.. and they simply can’t afford to shut down the factory for a month or two to rip it out and replace it.. nor do they have space to build a new one at Fremont.. but all the new giga and tera factories will not have this issue.
@@MichaelGreenLagos agree completely. I honestly think Tesla would benefit greatly from their next giga or tera factory also being in north america (NA) and taking over as their main assembly of S/X and 3, and either just plain shutdown Fremont.. or shut it down temporarily and give it a major overhaul. Honestly, i think they’d be better served just building a new 3rd factory in NA if needed, rather then try to refurbish the old Fremont one.. but they can figure out the pluses and minuses better than I can. But Fremont size and age is hamstringing them on the quality of what can be produced there.
@@airheart1 Don't you find it interesting that those things/occasional issues are NOT coming out of the Shanghai factory? The Shanghai Tesla products are rated the BEST in China (surpassing ALL legacy manufacturers).
Imo its sad public figures today often feel pressured to add the part "and I thought your criticisms were accurate" - even when they disagree. So instead, Id rather see the "I hear you" part being uttered sincerely, and the response directed to the actual question (you know, not the way politicians answer difficult questions :) ). But there is no sequitur that you need to say the criticisms were accurate when you dont think they were. A lot of criticisms are not, or they contain half-truths, misunderstandings, sometimes even malicious contortions of facts. So just as an appeasement PR strategy to agree with the criticisms journalists come up with only to satisfy their ego and prevent some kiddo (referring to the maturity of mind, not biological age) shitstorm on social media is really a bad development.
What matter is where you want to go... when you have disagreement, or dispute, the important is not to be the right one but it's to look to the situation and look ahead of how to do it better.
Elon Musk felt clearly comfortable when talking with another technically oriented problem solver like Sandy Munro. Result: One of the best, if not the best interview with Mr. Musk. Greatly appreciate it!
Not quite sure. The one with Everyday Astronaut at the Starship unveil was also quite good. No idea which was better. :-) (But Elon was wearing one of the Everyday Astronaut T-shirts in this interview... ;-)
I didn't catch one of the words in that statement when Elon said it. I suspect it pertains to the system that develops the software. (Remember, they don't write the AP software. They write a system that writes the software. I think that was said at the last Autonomy day (don't quite remember))
I have to agree. As a software engineer, I've constantly seen junior engineers overcomplicate with their solutions. A bit of time spent to understand the whole picture, often leads to a simple but elegant solution that is both small, easy to read, and effective. I can't tell you how many times I've had code reviews, and they look at my code and say, but what about? Oh.. But what about? Oh... The best solution is usually the simplest one. Fewer lines of code usually means fewer failure points to troubleshoot. Obviously, coding is not a vacuum, so real world applies.
As a programmer for a quarter of a century, this is exactly right. I commented on this above. Less code is better. Sandy clearly had the idea that more lines must mean better software, but this is not true in the least.
@@jamieorc I think Sandy was alluding to the complexity rather than actual lines of code. He sees engineering in the same way, you can hear him talk about it in this interview, less parts is better. And of course the complexity is enormous, but rather than borne by the written logic it's a function of the machine learning and data. If you had to count machine learning inflection points as lines of code it would be indescribably enormous.
Wow I often wondered what Elon thought about Sandy tearing down his Tesla's and then they get to meet and he has him on the show! Incredible I can tell they're both fans of each other! Fantastic tnx.

Conway‘s Law
@@airheart1 that the reson for the Texas factory and Berlin factory it better to start again from fresh working on what you have learned
I wonder how many other automakers CEO’s agree to such an interview with Sandy? Not many, I bet!
How to disarm your adversary - "Yes, I hear you, and I thought your criticisms were accurate."
Munro is no Tesla adversary what are you talking about...
@@yaxiongzhao6640 he was at one point
“Parry this you filthy casual”
I love that he got right into the panel gaps, legend
That’s literally his only complaint lol
This Munro guy is beyond annoying. Dam old man , shut up and let Elon Musk SPEAKKKKKK.
I clicked so fast, I almost broke my finger!

@@MunroLive No, thank you guys for coming at us with an interview like this out of the blue. And it's rare, high quality topics being discussed, too!
Best Musk interview ever. Finally he can talk to someone who understands what he is saying and who doesn’t look like a deer in headlights!
Elon didn't have to dumb it down for Sandy. Sandy has been waiting for Elon since the seventies.
Not quite sure. The one with Everyday Astronaut at the Starship unveil was also quite good. No idea which was better. :-)
(But Elon was wearing one of the Everyday Astronaut T-shirts in this interview... ;-)
Wow! 💥 what a interview. Two very smart minds that are changing the automotive industry for the better.
Well done guys 💯👍🏼👌🏼🙏
"I would give two points for deleting a line of code. One point for adding a line of code." Mmmmm so satisfying to hear.
I didn't catch one of the words in that statement when Elon said it. I suspect it pertains to the system that develops the software. (Remember, they don't write the AP software. They write a system that writes the software. I think that was said at the last Autonomy day (don't quite remember))
Second that!
As a software engineer I concur, the line you don't have to maintain is the best, practices such as DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself) is super important.
In software and hardware engineering, optimization is crucial.
It’s great that Musk engages with RUclipsrs. He is wearing an Everyday Astronaut shirt too!
Wow, really! Didn't notice until Ive seen your comment.
Oh ya the I love areospikes one. had to take another look. Good spot.
This Munro guy is beyond annoying. Dam old man , shut up and let Elon Musk SPEAKKKKKK.
Sandy himself is a legend of manufacturing. I have to watch again at least 10 times.
I don't know what to say!! Best ever I've seen on RUclips! Thanks so much Sandy!!
"2 points for deleting a line of code, 1 point for adding" - brilliance
As a programmer for a quarter of a century, this is exactly right. I commented on this above. Less code is better. Sandy clearly had the idea that more lines must mean better software, but this is not true in the least.
@@jamieorc Yep. Keep it simple, stupid. It's great to see good coding philosophy applied to cars, especially since Teslas are computers on wheels.
@@dkuchtamaine It's a good principle when applied to any engineering really. Software, mechanical, electrical, etc...
yeah I heard that too, Elon is mapping car CPU's like brains "neural networks" come on that's next level stuff right there
Wow I often wondered what Elon thought about Sandy tearing down his Tesla's and then they get to meet and he has him on the show! Incredible I can tell they're both fans of each other! Fantastic tnx.
This really shows how passionate Elon is about changing the game.
What really pleases me, is that videos like this aren't bugged by ignorant people with an IQ = shoe size.
Mostly intelligent conversation and discussion. That's what I love most.
One of the most informative interviews I have ever seen. I wish I could afford a Tesla. Thanks Elon and Sandy very much.
It’s amazing how Elon is on a completely different level than all of us, yet he is also so down to Earth.
If he wasn't that rare combination, he wouldn't be so successful.
"Sorry, Mr. Musk is not doing interviews at this time. May I ask who's speaking?"
"Yes, this is Sandy freakin' Munro."
"I see......Mr. Musk was wondering if 10:30 would work??"
Haha...exactly
almost thought that was a time stamp 😄
That's a good one (at least, for me) and I love it!! Elon the man meets Sandy the man :)
I had goose bumps at times watching this. I could tell Elon still enjoys engineering and making his products better although he's the richest man on the planet. He probably has almost everything a person wants to have yet he is so humble and caring. I am grateful that we are living in a world where Elon and his team are changing for the better.
Ever heard of Vladimir Putin?
Two guys meet who really know the score! How refreshing is that!
THE most profound video I’ve ever seen and Elon’s sincerity and caring about helping us and the planet we live on is endearing - thank you for making this and sharing it with us sandy and team!
I think he is great but he was also involved in a Coup in Bolivia which is less cool.

Great interview. You can tell Elon had a good time because finally he was talking to someone who spoke his language. I never saw two people more excited to talk about low voltage batteries in cars.
And thermal expansion, moment of inertia, etc. :)
"42."
"No, 48."
"Okay, that too."
Short-selling is "vice disguised as virtue." Absolutely.
Elon is probably the most important person in the world right now. And no, it has nothing to do with his personal wealth. It's his vision, and his ability to figure out how to bring it to fruition.
Thanks to Elon for agreeing to be interviewed, and to Sandy for conducting it.
And each of us, in our small ways, must do what we can to defend this dude. He is the rare bird that humanity spits out a few times each millennium to take our species up another level...the hate on him is befuddling and sad at the same time.
What a refreshing, informative "down to the mechanics", technology who both really know what they're talking about! What I LOVE about Sandy. He's not afraid to give due criticism, due praise & Elon is so willing to take criticism to IMPROVE Tesla. Most CEO's of any car maker, (if not all other then Elon) A) could take any criticism. B) wouldn't know anything about the mechanics, down to the wires & paint. One of the best Musk interviews ever!
Possibly the best Elon Musk interview I’ve seen so far. The interviewer knows his stuff. Musk knows that the interviewer knows his stuff. Musk doesn’t try to wisecrack his way though the interview fo the fan boys. Impressive on all counts.
Thanks David!
I do enjoy someone with a vision and can share his vision with mere mortals like me. He is a national treasure.

I think he was about to juxtapose the casualties from non self driving to self driving cars, but he smartly ended it there.
Self-driving feature is gonna save more lives than seat belts, airbags and every other things that we have done to the cars combined! Sandy Munro.
Facts
In just a few months my self driving Tesla has brought me closer to death/ life changing accidents than 30 years + of driving. Maybe one day you might be right...but that day is a long long way off
Not just self driving, but Tesla FSD
@@bbbf09 your single case does not matter to statistics, which prove that teslas are about 3-4 times safer (get in 3-4x less car accidents) than other cars.
@@RyanDiederich such a statement is equally meaningless and out of context. Is that just because that Tesla drivers are more conservative drivers (which I might expect) or because autopilot was in charge?. Is it for high speed motorway driving (where again autopilot might win out at more deadly high speeds fast reaction , simple road scenarios) or urban. Where it is as use as chocolate teapot as regards road safery. Where is your data/reference links...is this independent peer review study? Outside of this I can report autopilot is a dumb as a brick. Actually in reality it has the level of 'intelligence' akin to a cockroach.. but certainly not yet at level of a smart chimp or small child. Would you let any of that trio drive your car.
You can see that Musk got a little emotional, right at the end, when commenting on the number of people killed or injured in car accidents each year. So, in addition to his amazing intellect, this is just another example of his incredible heart. He is literally striving to save humanity in every way he can. Fantastic interview!
I’m glad you picked up on this, he is strangely xtra human and compassionate.
Same way he did in an interview on the energy prices in Australia several years ago... He got really emotional when told that some people are having to choose between buying food and paying for electricity. That led to the 100 MW Powerpack installation in 2017.
Most people who have worked directly with Musk would find you hilarious
somebody is in the musk cult!!!!
Correct!
