Has anyone in Greek mythology had a kid prophesied to kill them and looked at all the examples of how it backfires and just goes 'well I'll raise him as best I can and hope he doesn't kill me...' I mean has anyone tried that option yet?

Not to my knowledge, but knowing how prophesies go in Greek mythology, such a hypothetical person would likely end up killed by accident or as part of a misunderstanding.

@@GeneralLuigiTBC - or probably just as an accident in general. I mean in one story the guy lives until the end only to get killed by the man he was told would kill him when the man tossed a discus wrong and hit him in the head with it.
As far as I can recall, the only times that people didn't try to subvert foreboding prophecies was when they were told by Cassandra...
Which was kinda by design and didn't end too well for them.

that's the nice part of keeping most drawings low on detail, these kind of shots have a greater surprise/impact this way. You see this excessive detail-thing a lot in Spongebob.

One episode of Xena had an interesting twist on this one: A certain child was prophesied to take a king's throne, so the king's primary advisor tried to get is to happen so the advisor could then become the child's regent, and knock off the child king at some point. Xena intervenes, after some planning and violence, convinces the king to fulfill the prophecy, which the king is more than happy to do. He does this by marrying the boy's mother. The king has a wife and son, the kingdom has a queen and an heir. the prophecy in satisfied, and the advisor gets exiled I think. The prophecy will come true, because the child will take the king's throne., as his heir.
I imagine another subversion would be that the child grows into a master theif and literally steals the throne

It feels like almost every other Greek myth involves Zeus impregnating a woman. You'd think a leader of a Pantheon would have little more self-mastery.
Obviously, since history clearly shows: the more power a leader has - the less indulgent and self-aggrandizing he becomes ;)

Well duh. That's how epics work. You repeat the same structure several times with some details changed so it's easier to remember in between when writing is lost in the Bronze Age Collapse and when it's reinvented.

I haven't mentioned it before, but I really like the take on the bean people for this series. It works really well with the mythology angle.
It's humorous but still very epic when it needs to. Many credits who whoever did the drawing or storyboarding.
Very pleased you're focusing so much on Extra Mythology lately. Extra History is still #1 but I'll be damned if this isn't a close #2
I was re-reading the Percy Jackson books, and those books reference this myth often. But I’d forgotten the story so then remembered this video existed, and I got to refresh on the myth. Thanks EC!

I am LOVING this campfire story aesthetic going on. Please keep this for future episodes or similar aesthetics, like a bedtime story setting, etc. I'm so intrigued to see more interesting storytelling backgrounds. It adds a bit more mysticism to the stories.
I wonder if they'll cover when Perseus meets Andromeda? That'll be great, as he helped her fight off a giant sea serpent sent to destroy her home island because her father bragged that his daughter was, "more beautiful than Poseiden's own daughters." Yeah, the Sea Nymphs weren't happy about that, raced to daddy dearest and he was, like most Gods would be, furious.

Golden rain is pee. No one's ever gotten pregnant from being peed in.
In some version of the myth, Zeus actually transforms into literal golden rain.
@@monicag.k.tambajong yep I think that one is the myth that Zeus wanted to help a city whose crops,fields and forests were completely dry for years. So he transformed himself into literally golden rain and poured down to the soil. Then plants started to grow and Zeus promised to the people that from now on they will have food, water and forests forever and he also taught them new methods to cultivate their crops better . So that also means that Zeus was also a kind and good (many times) god instead of that jackass you ALL think he was.
I love the fact that extra fingers were animated in right before saying Polydectes name.

Perseus is honestly my favorite of the Greek heroes. Clash of the Titans was one of my first introductions to Greek mythology

So its ancient Greece. And you lock up the most beautiful woman in the world. Who has to be fed, guarded etc. And you expect her not to get pregnant?
And when she did get pregnant: Just point towards the gods :P Kind of what happened with Mary becoming pregnant of Jesus before marriage.
If the openings were so small she would not have been without a god like Zeus transforming to rain.

I don't know where you get your information. But in Greece (or in my school at least) we were taught something different, first the myth was shorter and Perseus was helped simultaneously by Hermes and Athena, where Athena gave him her shield and Hermes gave him his flying sandals. Also we were taught that only Medussa had the ability to turn people into stone, the other gorgons just had the privilege of being immortal and hideous.
