The monkey king, or Journey to the West, is a longgggg story. Like longer than Lord of the rings. Though every Chinese person knows the story. A true classic since 1592.
My current translation of Journey to the West is 4 700 page volumes. It’s the second longest book I’ve ever read after the Ramayana. I’m fairly sure it’s longer than anything in the western cannon.
I love when EM and OSP tell the same myths, they have such a different way of telling them and have different parts of the mythos that they consider important to put in their story.

I've been reading an abridged version of Journey to the West recently, and I think it's awesome that you guys are covering this story at the same time!
I dreamed I was teaching a bible class this morning and my grandparents were students and they were complaining that I was lying about what the bible said and I offered to show them the verses and I eventually said, "Myths are not stories that are untrue." I could almost hear the musical cues from your series. :)
Oh I love this story, it’s one of my favorite story back during my childhood. I had just finishing chatting with my dad about this story. And I had just got started on watching Doraemon movie on the Monkey King. Until I stumble upon this video. But I will not tell you want happen next in this story. I’m so delighted to see Chinese mythology getting attention lately! There’s so many good legends out there, and many creatures/much of the culture has influenced fun aspects of Korean/Japanese mythology as well. ^^
I remember talking about this in my 7th Grade World History class! That was one of my favorite classes because I enjoy learning about different cultures! Nice vid btw!

For Audible, I've taken a massive shine to anything in the LitRPG genre. There are so many great ideas and creative authors working with game-like world mechanics.
Much as I do love the OSP videos about this story, I gotta give credit to the art shown here. I could totally see illustrations like this being in a picture book adaption.
Just finished "Crazy Horse and Custer: The Parallel Lives of Two American Warriors" by Stephen E. Ambrose on Audible. I have a 45 minute commute each morning and evening and audio books are a great way to pass the time. I love history (shout out to Extra Credits History!). In late March "The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives in Your Home" from the creators of the Welcome to Nightvale podcast comes out. That should be a great fictional listen as well.
Just one problem with the visuals: that "crown" is not a crown, it's more like a sort of restriction device that wouldn't be bestowed upon him until 500 yrs later
