  • Our mate Justin owns this Volvo 940GL and had plans to convert it from the original B230 Red block to a Turbo 1UZ for over a year but has never had to opportunity to complete the task.
    Justin's Partner Anne contacted Al to see if we could smash out the project in 6 weeks as a surprise birthday present for Him. We said yes and took on the project in between building the Torana.

    Al's red block comments just triggered all of Sweden

    • @aserta
      @aserta 3 года назад +13

      Eh, nah. Those that know how to put power to these engines, those i know personally, and i know a few, are chill people. Kinda like Jamaica Sweeds. I guess you kinda have to be, going 270~285 in that brick kinda leaves other things behind.

    • @Zesserie
      @Zesserie 3 года назад +50

      The thing is, i am not triggered, here in Sweden there are loads of them, easy to make pretty big power. i don't understand how people don't know how to make them run good. They are the easiest engines to work on.
      on a 940, as long as the ignition box is fine, the wires are fine and not rotten, and you have a working coil. and no oxidation in the distributor at the back of the head(its mounted to the cam). This is very simple Bosch stuff from the 70's. If the ignition is fine, fueling is also very easy, you have a fuel box(that is separate from the ignition) if thats fine, check the wiring and injectors(usually never an issue)
      If the car is still not running fine, check the Narrowband (its a very basic wideband solenoid that knows rich, lean and in between)and the usual culprit: the MAF.
      Wanna make power? as long as the engine has compression(usually 8.5:1 on the NA, 8.0:1 for the turbo on the 900 series and later 700 series). rip all the electronics for the engine, put in a good ECU you know someone can tune. a set of injectors and a turbo that fits T3 and has an internal gate and of you go.
      Stock NA engines are good for 200KW if someone is good at tuning, i've seen stock b230FK reach 500HP on a engine dyno(not american hp, rest of the world hp) or about 400KW.
      But that is very rare and the tune is going be very wonky to not make to much torque, it kills the stock rods.

    • @Zesserie
      @Zesserie 3 года назад +4

      Oh and its easy to kill any engine, i've seen people kill volvos on 200 crank hp too if you dont know what you are doing.

    • @swe1man
      @swe1man 3 года назад +7

      A small flinch might have happen as a owner of many of these.
      One of them being a rallycar that’s stock with only a tune and a cam making 151hp at the wheel (they make 131hp at the engine from factory). And there are many turbo bricks that makes good power.
      But then I get what he means as well so :P

    • @MRMOPARMAN0426
      @MRMOPARMAN0426 3 года назад +13

      @@Zesserie in Australia, they are like a perfect storm of do not want.
      In a country that mostly hated imports at the time, volvos and saabs were the oddballs of the euros. Not many bothered to understand their workings, the owner were typically weirdos, parts were expensivish and took a while to get in, and at that time, injection was uncommon, finicky and weird. Alot of mechanics didnt want to know about it.
      So all that, combined with the reputation of being wonky dull cars, is why most guys have similar comments to Al. He knows full well what they are capable of.

    Here in Sweden people make really good power with the redblock B230 actually. Not as easy as with a more modern engine of course, but they are often seen delivering over 4-500hp. Seen examples over 700hp as well.
    The engine is also very popular in N/A form for competitive use in rally and rallycross, often (with aftermarket cylinder head as that is the biggest stick bottleneck) with over 300hp naturally aspirated.

    About those weights, they are supposed to dampen vibrations and i think they are also used to match the front car weight to the springs. V6, B230turbo, D24TD all weight differently so they use weights to match the springs.
    There are 2 MASSIVE additional weights INSIDE the front chasis rails, to extract them you would have to remove the bumper + bumpershocks.

    Spot on about the welding, Al. My dad had a steel fabrication business, making water purification tanks (with many pipes), for skimming contaminated water, 200ft wide beasts. In the 20 years I was hanging out there at the weekends, never once saw anyone purge weld anything. Equally, never once heard of the stalagmites inside until RUclips! Get the prep right, use the right rods, the right amps and the right gas flow, it'll be just fine. Hell, if you're that bothered, put a scope down it when you're done. Now, chatting to a coded welder, that's a whole different ball-game.

    Good on Ya, Mate! Projects like this are why any of us have friends for a life time. You just care, and your care shows. Great project, BTW- it's the kind of "street science" of building with what you have that keeps me coming back to the 'Stralian shops- you lot are big on creating your own answers- something the American car scene has lacked for a while, as well as purist welders who wreck the good enough and possible with the perfect. Don't mistake me- I'm a plumber with specialty certifications for medical gas piping and such- where it is absolutely necessary- and somebody else is paying for the materials and extra time it takes to do it that way. The engine doesn't inhale through this pipe, it sends it's smelly, bad breath out this way! And I agree, that down pipe looked dead simple- until you start working up and shaping all the pieces to fit tightly enough to do a finish welding job- great looking piece, Al!

    Though i love the regular in depth builds, it is pretty nice getting to watch so much get done in one episode.
    Would be cool to have more of these while you're in between builds like you are now.

    Yeah the old Volvo rødblokka b230 was a staple of the 90's for a lot of young guys and the best part of it here in Scandinavia was when you blew it up you could ask your neighbor if he had a spare. There was always someone that had one around :D I have seen a couple that made somewhat reliable power past like 330hp, usually a 16v with a lot of lag :P but they where great for a cheap 300 hp which was pretty decent for a first car. With our strict rules here in Norway we had quite a few get legal with old chevy small blocks and some had a rover v8, but the best swap lately was a newer volvo straight six with a turbo.

      Lots og people make well past 330 with the 8v head...
      But the engine management system is a big bottleneck. Go standalone and youll heer heaps of power

    • @Ztaal3
      @Ztaal3 3 года назад

      @@anderskisen1375 this was 5-10 years ago, but for the money it's not worth it, would rather do a k24 or 2jz, I've been driving with a lot of volvo enthusiast, but they have all changed unless they are going like 300 ish hp.
      You can make power on any engine if you sink enough money in it. They were great late 90s and early 00s as they came turbo stock and where cheap fun rwd.
      The 500+ hp cars I've seen have been 16v mostly, i think with the money you need for that level a 16v head isn't a big deal.

    You can hang old CD's on fishing line like wind chimes, 2-3 discs per string about 1 meter long, and about 2 meters between, along the edge of the soffet/gutter... that'll keep birds away from the door

    • @moebius2k103
      @moebius2k103 3 года назад

      A soffit is an exterior or interior architectural feature, generally the horizontal, aloft underside of any construction element. Its archetypal form, sometimes incorporating or implying the projection of beams, is the underside of eaves.

    They tune these b230's up to 750+ HP here in sweden. It's a ridickulous thing to do but they do it. They also did quite well in touring car racing in the 80's. I don't care for it though it's too ancient. I much prefer the modular engine when it doesnt have a distributor on cam setup.
