@@davenelson1571 Portals are way more money as well as a lot more work. Plus they can impart extra twisting forces so would also need the suspension redone or else it would drive weird and likely break stuff.
@@NBSV1 I'll agree they're not cheap, but quality parts never are, but considering how much work these guys are already doing on the diff & axles, just swapping in some complete portals would be easier and far quicker. As for the weird driving, that just has likely from a lift kit with unmatched springs & shocks or bad geometry, or being added to an already lifted body. Quality ones are very strong and breakages are very rare, just look at all the rock crawler patrols with unimog portals installed.
Would definitely recommend bracing the rear towers while the body’s off and it’s easy, especially planning on using it for towing. They bend quite often with less abuse then you’d think
Watching Alan weld all those plates over bare metal without dousing everything in weldable primer.. I am truly jealous. You guys have killer spiders but at least no killer rust.
Probably already aware of it but I believe with the Eaton elockers it is wise to be gentle going from forwards to reverse and vice versa as they will actually unlock and relock with each change of direction, due to the way the magnet and locking ramps are setup.
Al had it pretty much right with the hydraulic bumps explanation even though he seemed a little out of his element explaining it. His knowledge is more and more impressive each video!
Quick technical note on Al's bad mic: It is either dying from the grinding dust finding its way in, or the magnetic flux from welding is messing with the coil and magnet. For the first, a dust cap would suffice, if it's the second, Al needs to take the mic off when welding. Also, filming the welding arc directly from a short distance burns out the sensor in the camera, shortening its life. Not wanting to bitch, just trying to help to avoid gear breaking. Love all the content and projects, this is one of my favourite channels!

I might have missed it but you should source a set of the manual locking hubs for the front. The auto locking hubs you have are junk and are known to be a weak point on the GU's, especially when you're running a front locker.

Hey al just a heads up with those 2 piece bushes it pays to pull the front 2 bolts out every couple of services and put more grease or never seize on them, a few times i have had the bolts rust in the little sleeve and had to cut the bolts to get the radius arms out it has always only been the front 2 bolts too 🤷🏼♂️ you probably already know this but I thought i’d say incase
great job considering the death wobble once you change the lift. A lot of guys don't realize how much the leading/trailing arms shift and end up chasing their tail trying to figure out how to get rid of the wobble. This things gonna be a certified ripper.

Been running the dobinsons MRR 3Way for 7 months so wicked and few minutes and you're suspension is easily to adjust on the fly just fiddling with my rebound atm
Hey Fellas - I have a slightly older GU, 4.2L diesel Patrol in the same colour as yours, just put all new Pedders springs and shocks all around, and changed my Kumho MTs to Maxxis ATs ~ So much smoother and quieter now. I had a good friend's 16yo son come up and stay out bush with me for this last week, to experience bikes, guns, 4WDs etc ~ Man stuff. We had a sick time and on the day I took him down to Kalgoorlie to catch the Prospector train back to Perth, he drove us out, "L" plates up etc, but he slightly wandered 500mm onto the gravel shoulder and when I pointed it out, he freaked, locked up the breaks, overcorrected and VERY nearly rolled it (with 83yo Nanna Jill in the back too) Anyways ~ It (*JUST*) stayed on it's feet, but totally shredded my driver's side tyres ($290 each to replace once we arrived in Kal - GRRrrrr..) *I 100% reckon it would have gone over without the new suspension set up!! Straight up - Makes such a big difference! Really liking the suspension upgrades you're putting on yours - Absolute necessity!! Stay Sick, Skid Factory!
Dustin. Get Pro-Comp tyres next time ! I've seen the same problem with those Maxxis rubber sidewalls on a friends Pajero including a brand new front pair which replaced old delaminated AT's ? Buy a lotto ticket or scratchie matey. V
I went and bought a toolpro 3/8 cordless ratchet after seeing you guy use one and its great one of the most handy tools I've owned use it all the time. Probably grab the 1/2 inch one to if there going to release one.

Did they change the way the E-lockers work? Earlier models had a downside if you rolled backwards or changed direction forward-reverse they would unlock and they would "engage" again. Ie if you got stuck on a hill and rolled backwards the lockers had to re engage again when going forwards.

Nah few blokes i know but bracing threw the rear pretty much just a 5mm plate that welds to the side of the chassis, but they are using their trucks in offroad comps
Sweet Jesus, I’m ready for this. Watched all the vids on this motor across the 2 chans. (As a JDM, turbo, CUV, EV, hot hatch, RetroMod person)... Squirt industry iterated, simple, robust Cummins onto my thin block, Pez pistons chest.
Nice reference to Sam’s 4x4 skid. Btw my GU terrible wobbles. 2-3 lift prior to my purchase. New wheels. Tyres and bearings. Even removed the king pin shims with little to no improvements. Is it because when the lift done, they didn’t upgrade bush offsets like you did.
Al, 100% on the Patrol/Vs Cruiser deal 👍 Used to be a Sunny Coast mechanic myself but been in underground mining for years now. Nothing lasts like a Cruiser underground ((body and chassis) but the running gear upkeep makes millions for Toyota every year for just our company alone! Well played Toyota, well played.

How are you going to protect the suspension towers rusting between the original and strengthening plates? Seem weld/seal before paint? Maybe ok in your area but I wouldn't think it would last a few years here in blighty.
Along with the bump stop area reinforcement, if we're talking that much weight, i'd seriously consider reinforcing the inside (or outside) of the front wheel arch in the chassis, because you're asking that entire area to support and stress more than the initial spec, which probably puts you about 30~40% overload (if common over building crash safety and all that jazz specs were used in building this chassis, which is likely the case). 2 or 3 mm thick plate welded on the side, should suffice. If you do, round all the corners of the reinforcement plate.
"I value my stuff...." One of the reasons I watch you Al.
Only other option besides all the suspension upgrades would be a mobile sky hook. Quicker, but also more expensive

I've had the plug Rip off with short amount of wire out of diff. Much nicer to extend those wires so you can get plug tucked in out of way on housing.
