    Ignoring the whole covid thing, I can see why this has taken so long to get started Al. Some real wallet bursting parts for this build, also I knew when it came to you grafting a Cummins into the chassis you would do it right. Upgrade the frame, suspension and brakes before you apply the extra weight and power to her, nothing but respect for building things actually roadworthy.

      Why didn't/don't you install portal axles? They'd give you more lift & gearing & keep your suspension geometry closer to stock.

    • @NBSV1
      @NBSV1 4 года назад

      @@davenelson1571 Portals are way more money as well as a lot more work. Plus they can impart extra twisting forces so would also need the suspension redone or else it would drive weird and likely break stuff.

    • @davenelson1571
      @davenelson1571 4 года назад

      @@NBSV1 I'll agree they're not cheap, but quality parts never are, but considering how much work these guys are already doing on the diff & axles, just swapping in some complete portals would be easier and far quicker. As for the weird driving, that just has likely from a lift kit with unmatched springs & shocks or bad geometry, or being added to an already lifted body. Quality ones are very strong and breakages are very rare, just look at all the rock crawler patrols with unimog portals installed.

    Quick technical note on Al's bad mic:
    It is either dying from the grinding dust finding its way in, or the magnetic flux from welding is messing with the coil and magnet. For the first, a dust cap would suffice, if it's the second, Al needs to take the mic off when welding.
    Also, filming the welding arc directly from a short distance burns out the sensor in the camera, shortening its life.
    Not wanting to bitch, just trying to help to avoid gear breaking. Love all the content and projects, this is one of my favourite channels!

    Hey Fellas - I have a slightly older GU, 4.2L diesel Patrol in the same colour as yours, just put all new Pedders springs and shocks all around, and changed my Kumho MTs to Maxxis ATs ~
    So much smoother and quieter now.
    I had a good friend's 16yo son come up and stay out bush with me for this last week, to experience bikes, guns, 4WDs etc ~ Man stuff.
    We had a sick time and on the day I took him down to Kalgoorlie to catch the Prospector train back to Perth, he drove us out, "L" plates up etc, but he slightly wandered 500mm onto the gravel shoulder and when I pointed it out, he freaked, locked up the breaks, overcorrected and VERY nearly rolled it (with 83yo Nanna Jill in the back too)
    Anyways ~ It (*JUST*) stayed on it's feet, but totally shredded my driver's side tyres ($290 each to replace once we arrived in Kal - GRRrrrr..)
    *I 100% reckon it would have gone over without the new suspension set up!!
    Straight up - Makes such a big difference!
    Really liking the suspension upgrades you're putting on yours - Absolute necessity!!
    Stay Sick, Skid Factory!

    How are you going to protect the suspension towers rusting between the original and strengthening plates? Seem weld/seal before paint? Maybe ok in your area but I wouldn't think it would last a few years here in blighty.

    I've had the plug Rip off with short amount of wire out of diff. Much nicer to extend those wires so you can get plug tucked in out of way on housing.

      And I think he posed with another build, can't recall.
      Anyway, I think he's featured a number of times.

    Along with the bump stop area reinforcement, if we're talking that much weight, i'd seriously consider reinforcing the inside (or outside) of the front wheel arch in the chassis, because you're asking that entire area to support and stress more than the initial spec, which probably puts you about 30~40% overload (if common over building crash safety and all that jazz specs were used in building this chassis, which is likely the case). 2 or 3 mm thick plate welded on the side, should suffice. If you do, round all the corners of the reinforcement plate.
