This game will become a family tradition. My father passed his ways to me (he prefers Britons) and I will pass my and his ways to my child/children (I prefer Goths).
I am so glad there are still people that know and love this game...
I played it since 2002 or so. Love the game
Teutons all way
@@mikemapes2435 Ya! Teutonic Knights all the way.
just picked this game up again. I used to alternate largely between the Spanish and the Teutons but I think I'm all about the slavs now. I love hearing the language spoken as a student of Polish myself.
@@Sellipsis as a fellow slav I liek dis comment
I've been playing this game for 20 years. God time sure flies
boreas real It’s really one of the few games I can always come back to. If it gets boring temporarily, it’s always exciting and engaging again a few months later. I’ve been playing since 2000 as well. Gonna build a nice pc just for DE.
@@iforgot87872 i just installed it, runed benchmark, it went to 15GB ram...... prepare for 16gb. maybe even more, i didnt even entered big battles...

@@petargvozdic4210 Damn, yeah I've been hearing it's demanding. It's truly the game that will force me to build a gaming PC.
10+ years
These aren't changes that are needed, but sorely craved

@@RichardClark-hw6ic like, we could survive without these changes, but I have been wanting these for a while
I couldn't get into AOE2 because of shift click not being in the game, now i can
Age of Empires 2 DE should have more violence and blood. I hope small updates in that direction will come. I also want to see skeletons on the ground, they are important to create an atmosphere.
In addition what I do not like in Age Of Empires 2 DE:
1) They removed sounds of agony when a unit dies.
2) They removed corpse decomposition! Instead, the corpse is slowly falling deep underground, which is bad.
3) If a bowman or a spearman misses, the projectiles are no longer visible on the ground.
4) There is not enough blood!!!
I hope that the game will be updated.
@@arkadiuszjandylewski152 They have to keep the game in the T rating sweet spot. These things might make the game rated M, which hurts it in more ways than you think. The real damage doesn't come from needing a fake birthday on Steam or parents being deterred, but from publicity, specifically social media algorithms, making the game way less exposed than it should be.
Miss playing this with my dad, we had our own strategies defined we played so much. Some of our games we talked about years later we could remember everything :)
The ai unexpectedly tower rushed me: i feel shame for that...
I love the game, was part of the beta and it was must buy. It just need little bit more optimization so folks with lower end systems can run it too.
I played this game so much as a kid. I had no clue it had been supported all this time!
I would love a definitive edition of Galactic Battlegrounds, I had so much fun playing AoE2 in the Star Wars galaxy back in the day!
Pravus plays Age of Empires II?
HALLELUJAH!!! HALLELUJAH!!!
More like WOLOLO WOLOLO
I'll consider purchasing it when it's on sale down the road. I am one of those players who only plays story and super casual single matches or random with the ai on easy.
i was 13 turning 14 when AOE II was released, this update has been a long time coming.
Bruh I was 6 watching my older bro play on his pc can't wait to play!!!
Praise Pravus! This review has made me glad I pre-ordered this edition of a game I've enjoyed since the 90's.
The first game I have pre-ordered in years :P

Lumberjack, rock on, black death
Played the Original AoE 1 & 2, AoM, AoE 2 HD, AOE 1 DE and now AOE 2 DE. All this Apart from the various Mods. Damn! Time flies.
It warms my heart to see this game lives on. This is the true "support for decades" promised by lying "live service" developers. This is what it looks like when a game has an incredibly long lifespan, a long tail, because it's good. Because twenty years later, it's still well up there with the best strategy titles ever made.
No microtransactions, battlepasses, or pay to win (not sure how much counter strategies there are against dlc civs, but balance patches are a thing). Just DLCs and updates that add worthwhile content. A shining example of what a game should be.
I almost bought the HD Edition recently, gladly I didn't so I can get the Definitve Edition. Thanks for the review!
Nice review and exactly what I was looking for, wish your video was on the steam page for it. I will make one note, the shift click moving can be done in the hd version of the game It's just a little trickier to use than most rts. Shift click to place the flags and then let go of shift for the last click to get them to follow the command, I use it in every game for my scouts. What I would love to know is if they made this more intuitive in the definitive edition. :)
Thank you so much for making this video. I grew up playing it through my college years in early 2000. Have lots of memories of playing with friends. Definitely going to try the new release. Thanks again.
Famous Cheats of Good Old days :P
Aegis: For Instant build
Pepparonipizza: For Max food
Lumberjack: For Max wood
Rockon: For Max stone

Robin Hood: for gold
This was great Pravus! I think this would make a good video every month or two. Reviewing a game that fits with the channels theme or on an old game you played that gets a new release (Remaster, definitive, etc.)! I loved AoE 2 as a kid, was the first PC game I played at 6 years old. Maybe even play one of the new campaigns sometime, that could be great. Keep up the great work!
Hehe, he says 0:11 The Age of Kings, and shows Gameplay from The Conquerors
Some of these points seem to reflect the CD version of the game and not the HD edition on Steam, as the HD edition AI no longer cheat to improve difficulty and instead reflect the competitive community's play style, but not as much as mentioned for the Remastered version. The ability to tell a unit such as a scout to go on a set path was also present in HD edition by simply holding shift.
Playing it for 15 yrs never thought I'd see the day when aoe4 would be released.
ok ok! as someone who LOVED AoE1 as a kid! but skipped the AoE2 for reasons i don't remember! but REALLY enjoyed and beat the campaign of AoE3 with the two major expansions 3 times and countless times the campaign of AoM and Extended edition, i think it's time to try the final version of AoE2, it's not THAT expensive atm at steam, but i will wait for a little more discount.
One advice, great review by the way, but to give your words a huge bonus in power, try to match the video with what you are saying. Like the part with shift-click. You selected the scout, but there is no shift-clicky... 7:20. More detailed is the 9:15 part, where you show the farmers doing a different routine. But what is the standard routine? I didn't see what the ai did differently. A tip: you should not overlook these things, but adress thm in detail :) Thanks by the way. Great review!!!

Now I want the SWGB version of this.... :/
My friends and I used to play AoE2 at lunch in the office, on the company network. Lol
I didn't realize that it was still being developed! This is fantastic.
Thanks Pravus.
My PC has a top-end GPU and an 8-core 5Ghz CPU and whilst I don't get as low as 15fps, I do also experience occasional performance issues - it's definitely not just you.
That said, I'm *loving* Age 2: DE. It's just amazeballs. Hopefully the devs can sort the performance issues out, because I think everything else is pretty close to perfect (the only other thing I would like is map vetos in ranked ladder).
Am amazed the devs managed to strike the (IMO) perfect balance between keeping what's great about the game whilst introducing exactly the quality-of-life improvements (shift-click is the biggest one for me) the game needed to be the perfect 2019 RTS.
I bought it three times (my daughters like to play also :)).
EDIT: Should also say that I had the HD version on Steam already, but mostly played on Voobly with the user-patch. Am now 100% all-in on DE.
Just started playing again a few weeks ago. Such a nostalgic game.
More than that
This game is so much worth its price that I really feel bad for people that decided to pirate this game.
Just buy it, we need to show support for this particular franchise if we want to see more of this.
3:15 - Yo so anyone else stop the video to buy the game for first time?
Amazing!
Now Rise of Nations needs the same treatment haha.
Yes
Rise of Nations
Rise of Legends

Galactic Battleground.

On sale for $11 Canadian on Steam until January 5 2021.
I am interested in this game. Is Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition a more advanced and "better" game than Age of Empires 3?
I've never played age of empires 2, but i've played 3 a bit, it seems like it is. Getting this game rn
First game I remember hooking up my computer to a friends, the multiplayer is so addictive "wooloolooo"
VERY well made video, Good Job making things to watch.
I'm excited about everything other than the soundtrack update, I LOVE the AoE 2 soundtrack
The soundtrack sounds great but I'm not thrilled about the narrator changes
It is AWESOME only complaint is they should have redon the kings playing chess cinematic in modern graphics. that's my gripe
I played the game when I was a kid. It’s a great they revived such an old title
your amazing i love your work and yet i have play these games when was olden day released and love its was a biggest fans and still a fan of it never gave up
I’ve been on this game since 2002, it’s amazing
I really hope there will be drawbridges we can open
Ima wait for the Ultimate Definitive 2160p remix GOTY edition
I am from Poland and it is sad to see, that my country is not depicted in any way in the Age Of Empires 2. We had a very interesting history and we defended Europe from Muslim Invasion in Vienna in 1683, which could be an epic campaign.
This version also includes 30/40 FPS on a modern PC. And constantly, not at big battles
The path finding of the AI still sucks, which you could argue it can change the gameplay, but have you heard of OPTIONAL settings?
Are you able to rejoin a multiplayer gamer after your computy or game crashes in the new edition?
I'm happy to see this, definitely getting it now. I thought the last updated version was already great but if it looks better then I'm sold.
I mean as much as I would love the developers to maintain this game and keep it up to date I think there is a reason for it to be brought out as a 'definitive' edition lol.
My favorite game of all times! Looking forward to the HD version
Good review, I wasnt huge on this game in the past, but it looks good.
Is there still a cheat code where you can spawn in the Blue Viper with the built-in machine guns
...Pravus does reviews now?

PRAVUS DOES REVIEWS NOW!!!
Why is Steam selling a bundle that contains the original version with the DE for every iteration of the Age of Empires series? I have never played any but wonder who would buy and play the old version and the new version at the same time?
Excellent review! Thanks for this it is exactly what I was looking for. ;-)
I was obsessed with this game for 10 years
In my high school days. We used to hold AoE II multiplayer tournament. I remembered picking Goths every match and spam Huskarls and snowball the games till they eventually ban Goths from the tournament 😂
kc chawia there’s ways to stop a goth rush, it’s not overly difficult if you have skill.
I haven’t played this in years. Always wanted the hd version but never got around to it. Sounds like it’s time to make the leap to this version.
Most of these improvements eg. zoom in, number of villagers aligned to resources, setting path of scouts etc were already incorporated in AOE 3 way back a decade ago. In my opinion AOE 3 has been the best ever till date. Lets see what AOE 4 has in store.
First time when I played the classic, I forgot to sleep that night 😌
good review!!! always loved the series havent played since AOE3 but ima get this now and prepare for AOE4
I have played all editions on PC however I am hoping that it would be available on MOBILE since a long time as I have grown up now and have to work for a living...they should keep us old players in mind and release a mobile version please please please.
Aoe2 was one of my first video games as a child.
Wow I haven't played this since 2013. I grew up with the original so looks like I need to buy the 2019 version as well. ;)
Holy crap..
Frank's wars.
Death match.
No siege.
Imperial age.
Fast speed.

Dont be rook.
This is a game which this generation kids also played. This game is a legend.
Great review. I have been playing Age of Kings since it’s release in 99 and never wanted to upgrade with any of the expansions or releases following it mainly due to one factor: I detest playing with the standard exploration mode. I only play with the game map already travelled but noticed this option absent in the Conquerors. Hence, I’ve assumed all further editions are also without that option. Can you tell me anything about this? Do any recent versions including HD and Definitive allow this option? Also, do the online versions where you play against other people allow this as an option?
Well I found that there is a setting in The conquerors to play like that. And I remember cuz I liked to play like that with fog of war removed.
But the original game has shift click movements for scouts?
Great video. I have enjoyed playing this game recently
I don't know about the rest of you...but I always found the mangonel and scorpion-type siege weapons to be worthless. Too slow, too weak, always dead after they squeeze off a handful of shots no matter how you try to defend them, and, in the case of the mangonel-types, they usually do as much damage to me as to the enemy. Yet all these strategies online have players who swear by them. I honestly don't get what they're doing. Maybe they're micromanaging every last shot...
The A.I is using a neural network, we truly are living in a different timeline.
I have the old box of AoE 2 Conquerors sitting on my bed
I got a mid-high range PC and its stutters/lags like hell :( I'm assuming it's the game engine freaking out over units or something, but I hope it can get fixed soon .
The original (not demo) is one of the first games I played.
Damn this game! Nostalgia. I wanna play this again. Damn. So hyped.
I don't know why, and I shouldn't be... but I'm mad. I'm not buying another version of this game, this should have been a patch. Even Bethesda gave people who bought Skyrim the special edition for free. I know it's not a big deal and I shouldn't be mad but it's just kind of insulting.
Eh whatever, I don't have time for this anyway, I killed a few guys in Red Dead a couple days ago and I'm still going through the bodies for loot.
"How do you turn this on"

Take notes Warcraft III: Reforged.
Great review! Thanks!
I recently found my Age of Empires 2 disc and tried to install it on my laptop but after installing nothing happens when I click play, I was very sad.
I wish I had known about the Age of Empires franchise earlier than this week ...

_Crazy_ to me that AOE2 still sees development. Conqueror's was one of the earliest games I worked on, so the series has seen development longer than my entire ~20 year industry career! At Microsoft I was part of the "RECON" team that was basically a centralized playtesting team providing feedback on many games that went through MS Games at the time. As an AOE2 fan at the time, I was always hyped when we got a chance to play Conqueror's. We mostly tracked down multiplayer bugs (out of syncs), and also did a lot of campaign tuning (played that damn El Cid campaign on Hard so many times...) It surprised me that a friend from that team actually ended up working on AOE2: HD Edition in ~2013 (he was at Hidden Path Entertainment at the time).
new dlc just dropped, let's goooo

First sleepless nights gaming were with AOE. Love, forever.
I can relate👍🏿
The AEO2 Demo was the first game I played for 12 hours straight.
This game is just the perfect example of timeless. It’s like Mario, you can introduce it to a new generation and it never gets old or outdated
God, I remember playing the original AoE 2 with friends back when I was at University in 2004.
Fun times when a 3-player FFA turned inevitably into a 2v1 hehe.
Also: Definitve Edition certainly looked and felt very good when I had the opportunity to play a demo at Gamescom this year (has it's advantages working on a stand there with plenty of gaming PCs ^^)
I played in Zone with 56kbps Modem and still fun.
BlackMethos is this game in Mac?
I really want this game because I played this 5 years ago before I moved and I really want it, but I can’t find it on Mac 😭
Great times, this game should be in everyone's collection.
Im so gutted this didnt happen to the Red Alert series. It still has a huge player base and i would definitly buy a 4k remake :D
There is a remaster coming for original Red Alert. It was announced last year.
@@LaDeXi No, the original CnC gets remastered, not Red Alert. If it sells well, then maybe Red Alert also gets a remaster, but as of now, it is not in development.
@@Gileadean Both of them get a remaster. Petroglyph has released snippets from both of them in Reddit.
@@Gileadean There's even an official EA web page that shows Red Alert alongside of Tiberian Dawn. www.ea.com/games/command-and-conquer/command-and-conquer-remastered
It is out now!
They should make a definitive edition of the Rise of Nations as well
When i look at game play first it look like they put it to rise of nations engine lolz XD
There's already Rise of Nations: Extended Edition.
Yes! I'd pay serious money for that. Or Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds..
There are five main problems with Rise of Nations that keep it from being as good as Age of Empires 2.
1. Inferior music.
2. No walls and therefore little creativity.
3. Endless resources make it too unrealistic.
4. My biggest problem with the game is that they use crayon lines for borders, sometimes expiring in less than a minute or in a few seconds.
5. When units cross the sea, they automatically and immediately go by transport ships that suddenly appear. Though convenient for the player (except when enemies do it), its speed is unrealistic and makes seas not obstacles at all which makes the map dull.
And the sixth point is one I'm not sure of, since I don't even remember the map scenario but I think it's not on par with the one in AoE2.
PS I hate playing a map in ANY game which is antithetical to history such as Beijing beginning in the Dark Age next to Berlin and Johannesburg. That's absurd.
i had no idea AOE II was still a thing. i played the snot out of it years ago and thought i was crazy for liking it so much. kinda feel vindicated now :)
I have been playing competitive online on and off for 20 years. It would be good to have you back on the servers with us. Long live the king!!
Why play on unrealistic maps when you can be in my realms?
My channel has videos showcasing my maps including:
- EVROPA
- THE FAR EAST
- EURASIA
- THE SPANISH LAKE (THE PACIFIC OCEAN)
- THE WORLD
Omg SO many lost hours lol I think my original copy of the game disk is STILL melted into my old computer's CDrom drive!
And, I'm STILL trying to catch up on the chores I missed. 😂
