The lower shin when it comes to heavier contact or outside fighting as it's stronger and more dense. When it's light sparring or semi contact, I use the instep for range . No problem :)
You are absolutely the best teacher in Taekwondo someone might wish. So much detail explained and emphasiz on technique. Thank you so much for your videos!
It's not a stupid question but everything I mention here in my answer and much more are already in the tutorials so watch them thoroughly before asking questions that i'm answering in them. Thank you :)
The are two main methods of doing a turning kick like I say in the tutorial. You turn your base leg slightly as you lift and then further as you kick to release the hips and let the momentum continue to the target. How you chamber depends on which version you are doing. The quick one lifts up straight and then turns as you kick and the other swings in from a 45 degree chamber.
Well i like to be flash to test my body's limitations but i also train for practicality and to know i can defend myself in a real confrontation. Glad you liked it and thank you :)
The true challenge is against oneself, not each other. With the little knowledge I have, I try to help others as I remember how difficult it was for me in the past to do certain moves. Good luck with your training my friend :)
Awesome tutorials!! I will be 45yo shortly and after my two young daughters obtained their JR blackbelts, I decided to give it a go by trying to teach them that it is never too late in life to try something new! Thank you for your time and efforts in making these videos! Enjoy your day!
Not in sparring but to application for outside fighting I like to teach it as it will be more realistic than kicking someone in the head. Especially if your out one night with jeans on. The other tutorial on the round kick is more sparring orientated. Thank you :)
I've heard it get called a few thing like Full turning/roundhouse kick, straight through turning/roundhouse kick, power roundhouse/turning kick. It is probably known by a few other names but that's the ones that stick out for me. Hope that helped :)
Lovely tutorial! This brightened me up. In shotokan we are taught this kick but differently.... start with raising your leg straight to the side and then kicking and bringing it back to the original stance. This makes it very hard because because you tend to upset the balance and travel forward with the kick.......instead if you first raise your knee at the front and then bring it to the side it's not considered to be executed correctly.....We should have been taught your first turning kick!
I appreciate you saying that. Thank you :) There are different methods of doing this kick. None are wrong and all have their place for different situations or types of training :)
No problem. Should watch the other too and see whether it gives you a little bit more information about the kick. I won't be sparring as i have got a lot of things going on right now, My baby is going to be here any minute but i might go to support everybody else. Good luck if i don't make it though :)
Also. in outside fighting i would never ever do the more linear version just so you know that lol I think I've answered everything you have asked Chris but if you have more questions to ask about the turning kick, then please do so :)
Wow good job man ive watched alot of videos and had alot of trainers and you are definitely one of if not the best in describing the technique and demonstrating these kicks. Thanks for the video
That makes sense for reach and it's what i do to :) Don't recommend the cheekbone though, quite dense. The temple, jaw or neck are more efficient targets to cause damage if your aiming for the head in my opinion :) That sounds fine then :) Maybe in the future :)
If you actually look closely, it hits the knuckle on the side of the knee joint. That's correct but like you say it's risky plus you have to be in closer to your opponent :)
Thanks for the tutorial about the full turning kick. So helpful !! Ive seen it used in full contact TKD and the fighter was dropped cold. One time, the headgear was knocked off the KOd fighter. Your tutorials are super !!
I teach both ways of the kick and if you watched both tutorials i say the differences and i address that the kick from 45deg is more powerful. But in light to semi you don't need too much power (you will get disqualified) you just want to score points and be fast. The fastest way to get to a point is a straight line so that one is best suited for speed and is also easier to deliver multiple kicks but i advise a mixture in sparring but that's my opinion. Please ask if you have more questions :)
Hi, it's great you have conditioned your instep so it doesn't get as damaged when you hit the cheek bone, elbow, knee, etc. It depends on how you hit the knee. If you were doing the leg kicks like in this video to the knee joint with enough power you should pop the knee. But if it's a leg block that clashes with your instep, in my opinion you will always lose. Watch this link-> /watch?v=Kk2Gb7lnpKw&feature=fvst This is shin against knee so instep has no chance. Hope that helps. Thank you :)
We have been taught that for ITF style this kick should be applied at a 45deg angle rather than straight through the middle, ie directly in front of you, as you tend to lose power if the point of connection is any further round than that. What are your thoughts on this?
That is true but ideally you want to connect with the lower shin as it's more dense and will cause more damage. Plus, no matter how much you condition your instep, they are still tiny bones and they can't compete when hitting something a lot stronger and denser. Not saying you shouldn't condition because that would be idiotic but that's why you mainly want to use your shin :)
Good answer - thanks! I only watched one of the videos. Some good practical applications in the video. Hopefully get a chance to see you in action at the UKITF British.
If you could help me out with this that would be great. I've been trying to figure that out for the longest time but to be honest most TKD schools around here are horrible. You're videos help out more than any school i've checked out did.
after discovering your videos, you make me want to go back to taekwondo. I quit after getting my black belt when I was a kid after doing it 10 years because I wanted to be a teenager and do teenager things lol now I feel like I'm more mature. Thank you.
GingerNinjaTrickster...thanks for making the videos on kicking tutorials...and other great videos...i learn alot from those videos and yeah...i improve my basics haha...you deserve more subscribers btw hahah...
Nice tutorial , excellent technique !!! A lot of fighters use this kick in UFC . I saw their kick not as smooth as yours but still K.O a lot, really love it when it hit :))
Hey Aaron, I wanted to ask you if you could make a quick video of the excercises you do to have such great leg control and range of motion like at 4:20?!
They are already up in my other tutorials playlist. If you want to find things easier then check out my website as it's organised a lot better :) www.GingerNinjaTrickster.com
Aha! I have gotten to the root of the problem. The reason why I cannot do a 540 and a 360 full turning kick is because I cannot correctly drive my legs and hips throughout a simple full turning kick. Great tutorial! :)
That is quite a common mistake and one that I mention in the 360 and 540 tutorial. I'm sure you will correct it now and i'm glad you liked the video :)
I wouldn't recommend it. It's better to land in front and recover or do another technique afterward if you miss or are hitting the air. If you hit something/someone it can come back a lot easier so it's then a realistic option :)
Please could you do a tutorial on how to do a double round kick (like when you throw a right kick and immediately afterward a left kick almost in a single motion)? Also, I've learned some basic kicks and practiced taekwondo for 2 years now but I can't go to that dojang anymore. Can you please give me some advices on a progression to learn all the kicks and the basic tricks starting from the basics? Thank you very much, I love your channel and your tutorials!
GingerNinjaTrickster Hey so I actually train karate but our kicks are similar. Just a question about the kicks mechanics tho. I start the kick off as a 45° roundhouse kick but at the last second turn my hip over so it's 90° and after I follow through I retract it back into my stance. Do those mechanics seem accurate to you? It's kind of a self taught kick for me so that questions been bothering me for years haha. I'd greatly appreciate any feedback into that.
I'm not really qualified to give tips so don't take my advice 100 percent but I'm pretty sure going the whole way through is a method that's used if you throw a hard kick that has all your weight behind it and miss so you don't land in a side on stance opening yourself up to sweeps and so on. I Suppose if you miss there is plenty of stuff you can follow up with but depends on your style and the situation I suppose.
heuristik the do what are you talking about he's ITF Taekwondo that is Taekwondo in the way he's kicking is completely Taekwondo I think I would take more advice from a guy who's standing there with a black belt showing actual Taekwondo moves versus a guy just talk to you on the internet don't be a keyboard Warrior buddy he knows what he's talking about
heuristik the your videos do not look as good as his I was just watching yours they're not too bad they're nowhere near as good as his he knows what he's talking about if you got a problem with what I'm saying let's fight
heuristik the I want to see what you have to say to me I just now gave you a full on challenge I watched your videos I do not like what you said to the Ginger Ninja trickster his kicks are legit and you don't know what you're talking about I washed your kicks on your video and they're useless compared to someone like his it looks clearly like you only practice in your house and not at a dojo but I gave you a formal challenge I want to see if you're actually willing to meet up somewhere I live in the Inland Empire in Southern California be nice to see where you live maybe we can meet somewhere and actually fight and see what you're talking about this is an actual formal challenge to fight you do not like what you said I do not like keyboard Warriors I want to see if you're actually willing to accept my Challenge and fight or if you're someone who just wants to talk crap I'm telling you the more I think about it the more pissed off I get we're going to see right now if you're someone who just talks crap I am really willing to fight you
It's interesting how much the rules of a sport effect the application of techniques. Trying to figure out an all purpose combat use for this kick, as I practice Judo, boxing and Karate. Hey Aaron i got a question for you. I have a conditioned instep ( i kick hard things and broke boards) and for all my practicing does not hurt now when im kick the bag.Let's say i kick some guy in the knee; it is possible to break or injury his knee without hurt my instep? Because I try to kick with the lower shin but it hurts a lot. Greeeeeat video as always ;)
Hi just wanted to know was this kick taken from muay thai and added into taekwondo or was it already in taekwondo long before these two martial arts had any contact with each other
So I have this thing that I have been confused about the roundhouse... it's about the grounded foot, exactly when do I turn it? and also when you raise the knee to the front, should it already be at 90 degrees and then turn it when you kick to the 145 degree area? or should my foot stay straight and then turn a full 145 when I'm throwing a kick? another question(lol) my roundhouse doesn't feel powerful to me... when I hit a heavybag with it I can't feel the power and get thrown off balance.
I have been training and teaching taekwondo for over 45 years. You have Beautiful technique and are an excellent instructor. Love your videos.
Douglas Weaver what the fuck you have 800k subs
The lower shin when it comes to heavier contact or outside fighting as it's stronger and more dense. When it's light sparring or semi contact, I use the instep for range . No problem :)
Ayyy man so I’m working on it and can do it pretty easy but I can’t get my leg up any tips

Sorry for flooding the comment section here man. Honestly you've been the best source for this kick, since it's been self taught.
Jibs 1988 No problem and i'm glad that I could help :)
No problem and i appreciate your support, thank you :)
Well it's all sorted and the video is removed. Thank you again for informing me and i will be making more videos in the near future :)
Really appreciate that and i'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you :)

Dang these tutorials are probably the best ive seen
31st October to the 4th November :) I will definitely be demonstrating yes :)

your techniques are very descriptive, turning snap kick & round house kick are two distinctly executable kicks for me now :)
No problem. Yea, it's not a kick you want to get hit with. Thank you, really appreciate you saying that :)
Thank you :) That's great news, keep it up :)
You are the star of RUclips. Keep uploading videos:)
I will do my best to :)
Thanks! Good luck with the baby, hope everything goes smoothly when he/she does arrive!

There's something about switch kicks I just love ❤️
Remind me never to start on you! So your not just a flashy martial artist, you look like you can handle yourself!! Great Tutorial by the way.
Thanks mate!
I sure wish you had a school in FL. Who ever trained you has done a wonderful job.
Can this technique be used outdoors?

that was 1 b'ful explanation :)
loved every sec of it :)
thank you very very much

I'm glad you liked it :)
They sure do and it's so powerful it doesn't need to be perfectly clean to cause a knockout but thank you :)
Yeah it helped alot thanks. I did notice that. It naturally bounces off whatever you're hitting anyway haha

There is a guy named TKDman80 that posted one of your demo reels and says that you are some South African TKD fighter named Athol Shongwe.
Please could you do a tutorial on how to do a double round kick (like when you throw a right kick and immediately afterward a left kick almost in a single motion)?

taekwondo itf dont have low kicks right? :) awesome video as always
that is a fantastic demonstration, when you have time can you make a tutorial of Double Roundhouse Kick.thanks!!
I appreciate you saying that. Thank you and I will add it to the list :)
Thank You so much subscribed!
No prob. Keep up the good work!
It's interesting how much the rules of a sport effect the application of techniques. Trying to figure out an all purpose combat use for this kick, as I practice Judo, boxing and Karate. I can't help but think the Thai style block after the full turn is a dangerous follow up when fighting against a Judoka or wrestler. Being on one leg again for an extended period makes you really easy to throw.
Ether way love your videos they're fantastic and well detailed.
Depends on the distance the opponent is away from you. What you do is all about different factors.
Need to brush up on my kicks again. I've been using your video's as well as KwonKicker. Muscle memory always seems more fleeting for me regarding my kicks, if I'm not practicing them regularly. Thanks for the response you're a cool guy.
Geoff Parsons Thats cool. No problem and I appreciate you saying that. Thank you :)
So in some video, I think we saw you doing a low turning kick and without setting the kicking leg down you turned 360 on your bottom foot and did a high roundhouse kick. Do you have any tips on how to do this? more specifical on how to get your bottom foot to pivot far enough? Thanks
Do you have any tips on practicing this without a heavy bag or partner
Do you have any tips for strengthening the hip flexor for a kick such as this or any kick in general, so that I can gain more height for a longer period of time?
Thanks I can do it but i feel a bit of a pain in my left hip joint any tips and how can I keep my balance
YOU ARE THE BEST
Oh, when I usually kick, I don't necessarily try to kick with my foot, except when I am throwing turning kicks to the face (particularly the cheek). I usually try to kick to the degree where the instep and shin wraps around the body, especially when I am kicking to the torso. Any suggestions?
( BTW, can you do a tutorial on Turning Kicks with the Ball of the Foot?)
To add more force to this kick our instructor told us to put your left foot slightly outside from the initial position or put your left foot bit outside of the line of target
if you get my point (if I explained it correctly) what is your say on this variation?
Thanks for the answer! Man,that shin video....holy shit!! hahaha i now have the things a lot clear thanks again!
Great Videos
Great again!
But in another video (i think it was the "sampler") you jump and kick twice while in the air! I told myself it would be a piece of cake to master, as i have a good roundhouse kick. So I tried and just failed. I have no clue how to do it.. :( What I want to say is could you do a tutorial about it pls? (maybe it doesn't diserve a full tutorial but, still..)
If you wanted to retract/ wrench the full turning kick back would that be wrong?
sir will u please tell me the diffrence between round kick and round house kick? because for me both look like same . Thanks
It's a family run martial arts centre so my parents own it :) Just add me on my facebook page :)
Is it alright to contact with the ankle area? some people who kickbox only contact with the shin
Is there a name for this variation of the turning kick?
have you developed any bad hip symptoms due to TKD?
Not at the moment so lets hope it stays that way lol
the 1 person who disliked the video took a roundhouse to the face by the ginger ninja
Hi just wanted to know was this kick taken from muay thai and added into taekwondo or was it already in taekwondo long before these two martial arts had any contact with each other
GOOD JOB
Thank you :)
Far from the best but thank you :)
I'm just learning this kick. Starting slow with low kicks.
That's great! Good luck :)
