Scrap Metal Recycling - Processing the Rest! Copper and Brass!

  • HUGE CASHOUT! The scrap heap has gotten a bit out of hand, and with this we've finally taken care of most of it. There's one big upside to having a heap of scrap metal to recycle though; selling it all! And what a scrap run it was this time. I think that's a new record! Turning trash into cash, copper and brass, and so much more.
    Wire stripper I use: amzn.to/3jrO2iS
    The motorized stripper: amzn.to/3y0JMuQ
    The wire cutters I like: amzn.to/2T6j3OW
    This is the cheaper version: amzn.to/2SwrYsB
    And here are those grips I recommend: amzn.to/2QCJmYl
    (If you make a purchase on amazon through the links above, a small amount of what amazon makes on the sale is shared with me. It's a great way to help support my channel, at no additional cost to you. Even if you buy something other than my tool recommendations!)

    WOW!!! Those chips with the gold square and stripe and they look like IC chips...are actually 8086 CPUs and at Boardsort are worth $170/ lb!!! That is a LOT of RAM!! Burning copper wire, motors and transformers is illegal here in the States. A lot of scrap yards won't even take burned wire.

    • @thubprint
      @thubprint  2 года назад +4

      I didn’t realize burning transformers was against the law as well! I’m a hard no against burning wire anytime it comes up but the legal side isn’t something I’ve thought about, makes sense the regulations would extend across more types of scrap. Thanks for the tip on the chips though, I had no idea they were worth so much!! I’ll have to make sure whatever deal I come to with Baptiste is favourable for both of us 😁

    Those round cast aluminum things that weren't threaded are cake decorating plates. They're meant to sit on a shaft and spin so you can decorate without picking up the cake. Also, the table you picked up is a donut icing table. Bowls of vanilla or chocolate icing go in those holes and the tray of donuts sit off to the left.

    I had a pretty big nostalgia hit on one of my hunts last week. I saw what I thought was a microwave that turned out to be 3 old computers, one was the same model as my very first PC from 20+ years ago (2000-ish) my mom was driving while I was loading stuff up and I picked it up with the biggest smile on my face and showed her.
    It couldn't even compete in this generation of computers but I might keep it as a bit of a "museum piece" or maybe building a decent PC inside that case.
    But I'll get far more out of it like that than I would scrapping it.

    • @thubprint
      @thubprint  2 года назад

      That’s so cool!! There’s a big retro scene for stuff like that, people set up ‘time piece’ pcs with voodooFX cards and sound blaster cards on beige CRT monitors and run retro games on DOS. I don’t think I’d get much use out if something like that but another option would be the ‘sleeper build’, all new modern parts for a smokin pc inside a yellowed old case. I’ve got my old one around as well I’ve been wondering which direction to go

    Oct 22 post date? Was my B-Day. Thanks for the present of posting for me. Haha. Enjoyed watching all the processing. Congrats on the huge $$ score. I agree that you should stay with your current yard. Not to mention the extra gas to drive to the new place. I watch Big Stack D also. He uses a vacuum system to whisk away all the dust when polishing. Made me think of that when you used the respirator. Boardsort, here in Ohio, buys all that eWaste, but probably too far for you to ship. Have a good week.

    Great video man, I love hearing that you follow the same channels as I do and I look forward to seeing what you do with the dust!!! Like so many others I would dig more videos like this where you're processing your bins; I watch it as I do the same and often it's in them that I learn better more efficient techniques.
    I wanted to make a request for an instructional video. You seem to know a ton of different places for comparing prices and for selling scrap. Would you please do a video on how you find these places? What you look for, what and how you search. In my area I know of 2 scrap yards and that's it and I'm stumped as to how to find more beyond word of mouth with other scrappers; plus I think it would be quite rude to directly ask the yard, with whom I've built a good relationship, for a list of their competitors LOL.

      It’s definitely a better system to use a vehicle, if I didn’t have wheels I’d have to do something else.. I mean it’s still worth it to pick up aluminium bars or copper pipe/wire but I’d never get big payouts with a bike and a backpack

    Drake! A propane torch on those seized bolts would have helped you remove them faster. Also a cheap corded impact gun and the right socket could help make it go faster and not a bad little investment for future processing and projects. Just my two cents, Take it easy homie!

    • @thubprint
      @thubprint  2 года назад +1

      The impact gun I can get behind, I really need to buy one of my own! I’ve used the torch trick before but it’s more for stuck on bolts on cars for me

    • @thebadgeofshame3994
      @thebadgeofshame3994 2 года назад

      @@thubprint Yeah man, the torch trick is a good one. It does work quite well on steel bolts in aluminum because the aluminum transfer the heat much faster than steel so it helps.
      However just like you said.. Even I choose to forego the extra mile at times because efficiency is the name of the game and a few dollars lost to breakage or dirty prices is worth it when processing is too time consuming.

    You were right! This was a really great one. Is it as much fun knocking all these bits apart as it looks, or is it tedious? Congrats on the big score. I love the whole estate sale process - this is a good direction, and I wish there were a lot more of these opportunities.

      @thubprint  2 года назад +1

      I’m gonna jump on any estate sale I hear about for sure, those videos are super fun! Picking things apart, I wouldn’t call it tedious as it can be fun and cathartic. It’s a challenge for me though because I put a lot of pressure on myself to spend my time making videos, so a heap like this one is stressful to me. I spent the whole time wishing I was out dumpster diving, I could’ve done three vids in the time it took to do this one 😂😭 stack of cash at the end definitely eases the pain tho lol

    If you have the room I'd suggest using the table top and stainless with the holes as a work station and make it so buckets can sit under those two holes. Make through brass in one, copper in another. Or if you cut ends off wires then wire in one cords in another. Just depends on what you're doing at the time

    • @thubprint

    Hey Thub, just a suggestion as I'm in Hvac. Easy way to get motors out of blower housings, a quick squirt of penetrating oil on the hub where it meets the shaft, wait 2 minutes and undo the set screw. Turn the whole thing upside-down and let gravity do its thing. Almost never gives me a problem. Also a cheap hub puller would not be a bad idea

    • @thubprint
      @thubprint  2 года назад

      Oh penetrating oil! I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of that, that would make it much easier. I do think the method I found has the advantage of the motor already being partially broken down, but if a person wasn’t going to pull the copper out of the motor it would be better to keep it as big and heavy as possible 👍

    • @robw505

    That smoker you had for your brother, here's an idea for him.
    Fillets of arctic charr (salvelinus alpinus) sea salt flakes, mix lemon zest with salt and and rub the Fillets and top off with chili flakes.
    Prefably use Bradley bourbon bricettes for the smoker.
    Bon apetite.
