    2:40 it's way worth seperating the aluminum from the copper. melt the aluminum into ingots and the price is very high.

    Good job cleaning, and everyone should keep in mind that it is better for everyone to keep the groups of scrap sorted and separated. It is definitely not worth taking the copper tubes out of aluminum fins, but it is always worth separating the steel from copper or brass or aluminum. Definitely worth separating copper bits away from the copper bits that have paint or lead solder or brazing.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  8 лет назад +3

      I suppose the old cast iron gas pipes I took could be considered stealing. I saw it more of cleaning up junk in the woods. If I didn't take them to the scrap yard I would have thrown them in the trash instead because I saw them as littering up the woods. I drag a lot of junk scrap metal out of the woods to make the woods nicer.

  • @TriangleStirling
    @TriangleStirling 9 лет назад +1

    hmmm, based on all the copper and things I would have expected more. Don't know how the prices in the Netherlands are related to the USA. Going to the scrapyard is always cool. One time I had 200 pounds of dead blood pressure meters. Just plastic, a circuit board and a little airpump in that. They even gave a nice price for that, even if it was mostly plastic. Last time I went I had some old computers etc. from my summerjob. It's amazing how much you get for old computers! So much compared to normal steel!
    What I learned here is that if you want to bring a big pile of on sort of scrap, like we did one time when we tore down an aluminium greenhouse, is to call before you go there. That time we got a few hundreds of pounds of aluminium. If you call before they will give you a higher price, so you don't go to another scrapyard. Then when you get there they can't give you less. Not all scrapyards are that fair, you can't really check if you got a good price.

    I often wonder why US folk use these pick up trucks for scrap? Here in UK, it's all large panel vans and dropside trucks. Do you get extra hassle if you drive something big like that over there?

    • @johnhouston4899
      @johnhouston4899 8 лет назад

      Depends where you live, mainly truck for ease of loading and unloading, can use a van in any state because it's closed from anything falling out.

    • @freeganjustin6699
      @freeganjustin6699 8 лет назад +1

      +john houston To be fair, it's only recently, with Romanian immigrants, that we've been seeing lots of large panel vans at it. Traditionally, scrappers ('rag-and-bone-men') have used drop side trucks for years. Favourite seems to be the Iveco Daily truck, although Ford Transit and LDV Convoy LWB are seen a lot. No one uses a normal pick up as they are just too small. Might as well have horse and cart, which I can remember in the sixties.

    • @goldsilverandiamonds
      @goldsilverandiamonds 8 лет назад

      Pickup trucks are daily drivers from many people. It's the vehicle a regular person owns and has ands can be used for many things like taking loads to the scrap yard. Do we have large trucks? You bet we do, however, unless you are a business that is making good money they cost more to buy, register, insure and drive so smaller trucks are a cheaper more efficient option that gives you more versatility.

    • @freeganjustin6699
      @freeganjustin6699 8 лет назад

      That's a good answer that make sense. Over here, you wouldn't use a pick up as you'd never get enough material to make a profit. Our fuel prices are about double the US rate for a start. And scrap metal collecting literally triples the insurance premium, so a proper commercial vehicle is the only way to go. Get caught with the wrong insurance and you can easily end up with your truck seized and weighed in as scrap itself.

    • @goldsilverandiamonds
      @goldsilverandiamonds 8 лет назад

      freeganjustin Sorry to hear about the anti-business climate you live in. I thought it was bad here in the U.S. We are lucky to have lower gas prices which makes picking and scraping more cost effective. Many people do it on the side to supplement their incomes so do it full time either way its not easy to make huge amounts of money because of the competition. It's tough to find big loads much scrap it picked up piece by piece over time and saved up but every now and then you might get a good load. I see guy use trailers along with their truck for larger load. So you do see people with a full size truck filled with metal and towing a 8-24 ft trailer filled at time too. Trailers are pretty common to be used when you need more room. They cost less to register and can be found for fairly cheap used depending on the size. This allows people a place to collect and store the scrap safely and effectively.

    I need to have scrappers stay away from my display tables for my yard sale (not trash day). I was looking for screws one day to screw the table top back onto the metal stand, and some metal scrapper took my stand! What an idiot! How am I to display my other items that I am giving away? I can't place them on the ground, they are not trash!, and the street is right there. The items would get extremely dirty. When in doubt ask, because I will call the police for theft.

    You should find a place where the prices are higher, because coppers are way worth it to make bullet out of them. You, should have thousand out of that much copper.

    scrapping is for people who claim some sort of money assistance. $147 for a probably 10 hours worth of work is not very good.
    I have scrapped a good bit back int he day just from jobs i worked at at the end of the day and after a few trips, even melting down copper and the aluminum, it was still not worth my time. its only worth it to get rid of materials and waste because it brakes even and does not cost money to throw away. Cheers to anyone taking a proffit from scrapping but its just a waste of time if your doing it for the income.
