New Seiko Diver GMT SPB385: looks good but is it good enough?

- A good-looking watch isn't necessarily a good watch and vice versa. Let's explore in-depth this new Seiko Prospex 200m diver, a re-imagined 68 model, with the brand new 6R54 caliber featuring GMt-function, date, 3-days of power reserve.
I put it in the time-grapher and the results might surprise you, especially after those of the dreadful 6R35. Actually I also re-tested the 6R34 and it's actually not performing bad at all.
This SPB385 is a limited edition (sort of) that celebrates 110th years of watchmaking by Seiko and is also part of the Save The Ocean initiative.
The additional NATO strap is made of recycled plastic. It is very thick and smooth, pleasant to wear and to look at. I will show how the watch looks on it as well as parachute and waffle straps.

I love it when you pull out the Seikos, you got the heavy hitters but also enjoys Seiko drivers.
I bought 2. The Black and the Limited. I love them.
I went window shopping for a watch yesterday hoping to find something that I liked for around £1200 UK pounds and couldn’t find anything that came close to this Seiko. It looked very close to a Sea dweller in the shop window and I had to have it. The fit,finish & detailing of the watch head is absolutely sublime! The bracelet is okay but could do with a better clasp although it’s not terrible. With regard to Seiko movements I know they can be hit or miss with regards to accuracy but as you point out in your great video they can be sort of regulated by careful positioning at night. The finish of the watch is absolutely fantastic with a great bezel. Another plus is the Diashield coating. It’s a fantastic watch! Great video, thanks for sharing.

I feel these have a more balance look with the smaller dial size and wider bezel, compared to the regular MM200's, where there seemed more empty space on the dial.

whole line of mm200 reduced is a great line, I think best Seiko low profile line forever. Watches from this line you can wear on any occasion and for almost any dress code. I have sla021j1 and I love how simmilar reduced series is to my beloved watch. If I can I will buy all watches from this series, like I did years ago with monsters, and one day maybe I will sell them all like I did with monsters. But I think mm200 reduced will not get old and out of fashion like monsters haha. For now I have only SPB240j1 with golden accents and brown dial and I love it coz reminds me Seiko marinemaster 300 from 60" with golden touch. Now I want to see in flesh this watch to see if it is that beautifull like people say.
Glacier dial is fantastic, I think, for me, that the bezel would be nicer if it were about 0.5-1mm smaller diameter to make the proportions look better. Its a lot of bezel for a small'ish looking face imho. Hard to tell from a video vs in person though.

That famous Seiko 5 rattlesnake rattle.. is how they get the movement going .... Because you don't want to shake an automatic watch abruptly.... The rattlesnake rattle is perfect... Without destroying the watch

As with every current seiko realese. Great watch i like the green alot. But steep price for a 6r watch. Lets see what happen to them on second hand market
The watch that you bought keeps very good time. Seiko doesn't regulate their watches and that very wide accuracy specification (minus 15 to plus 25) is there for a reason. It might still be worth it to some people (a LOT of people?), though. It is a beautiful watch!
Is it possible to regulate this movement to 3-5 secunds per day? Minus 15 + 25 is not good at all.

A great idea of a watch but in my opinion, the execution is just a bit lacking with the date window and the excessive text on the dial
Definitely a beautiful watch and a great presentation, the only thing I noticed, for example at 14:47 of the video, the GMT hand is not aligned at the 22 hr mark , that would drive me nuts!!
Could be just the perspective I have the same watch and all of the hands line up absolutely perfectly -spot on
I just looked at the video again, it’s not on 22 hour mark exactly because his main minute hand was past 12 o’clock. Once you move past 12 o’clock, the GMT hand starts to move towards the next hour. It is more noticeable on the GMT hand because it has more space to cover in a shorter period of time.
Compare the Seiko SJE093, Tudor Pelagos 39, Seiko MM 200, please?
The rattle is what makes the watch so great..... That's how you keep the movement going.... With the rattle. . It's dive watch
How is accuracy??
Just tried one on this afternoon in Hong Kong,the shop was already offering 25% off right off the bat.

Looks nice, but to be honest I prefer the clean dial look of the cheaper Seiko Sports 5 GMT SSK001K1. SSK001K1 is $558 and the SPB385J1 is $2137 that’s almost a whole monthly normal salary where I live.

Caller vs Flyer GMT obviously I’d prefer the flyer as someone who travels frequently, but honestly I’ve never been on a flight where I needed more time to reset my watch.

It does look good, but I would choose another one because caller GMT doesn't make sense while there are lots of nice traveler GMTs mainly from Swatch Group in the same price range. Despite that, your reviews are always fantastic.

The longines costs double the price of Seiko, so I wouldn't classify them in the same price brscket.
Personally, caller or traveler GMT doesn't matter because it's just for show. However, regarding Seiko, the main concern is the 6R movement, which is way inferior to its counterparts.
@@ollystone2314 Longones Zulu is twice as expensive. What are you smoking? Mido designs are not even in the same ballpark as the Seiko's.

I own this watch and it’s my everyday wear. My only gripe is it is not very accurate. I have to reset it every 5 days. It’s a beauty in sunlight.

Just got the spb385 in hand. It looks amazing upfront and much more beautiful than the black and green options.
I just really dont have a use for a GMT watch.. They are amazing, but the extra pointer would just always be useless to me

GMT option in a divers watch seems silly. Here in Canada the retail price is 2100.00, LONGINES HYDROCONQUEST sells here for the same price.

got my sob385j1. what a disappointment. although it looks nice, but neither bezel nor GMT hand have been aligned properly. you, BTW, have the same issue with your GMT hand. looks like Seiko's quality control was on vacation.

Seiko makes great looking watches but very poor movements in terms of accuracy. Its ironic they are famed for beating the swiss in accuracy but too lazy to regulate their watches.

Looks good but I would never spend money when you see them from close it’s still not at par with the Swiss no matter what people say . But if cheaper I would buy it e.g. 600 - 700. Of course I own a Pepsi if I want a gmt so unfair comparison
yeah well i think depends on where you stand: you already own a Pepsi so this definitely doesn't compare as favourably, but for me for example if i can get a decently well finished watch for 2k with the looks, i see that as a win, especially since i don't see myself buying a Pepsi or batman for the prices they are asking for, i'd go for a nice dress piece instead, but thats just me.
