- CP 2816, an H1b 4-6-4 Hudson built by Montreal Locomotive Works in December 1930, has recently been restored to service by CPKC to celebrate the merger between CP and Kansas City Southern. As we get closer to the late April departure of the 2816 on the Final Spike tour, the steam crew made another successful break in run from Calgary to Edmonton and return on March 18 and 19, 2024.
The weather was cold and cloudy, which really accentuated the smoke billowing from the locomotive as she worked her way across the Leduc Sub. We caught the train leaving Edmonton, at Leduc, Kavanagh, Millet, Maskwacis, Menaik, Wolf Creek and at Blackfalds.
The Consist was as follows:
CPKC 40B-19:
CP 2816
FPSX 4219 - Auxiliary Tender
CP 35508 - Auxiliary Tender
CP 3084
CP 29114 - Tool Car
CP 99 - Baggage Car
CP 96 - Generator Car
CP 111 - "Vaughan" -
CP 102 - "Ernest 'Smoky' Smith, VC"
0:00 CP 2816 at Ellerslie (leaving Edmonton)
2:00 CP 2816 at Leduc grain elevator
2:50 CP 2816 at Kavanagh
4:45 CP 2816 at Millet
7:04 CP 2816 at Maskwacis
7:55 CP 2816 at Menaik
8:40 CP 2816 at Wolf Creek
9:34 CP 2816 at Blackfalds
Watching this is making me more and more hyped for the tour. While I'll sadly be missing out on it, it's not stopping me from being excited for this tour happening within the next month.
I’m looking forward to seeing videos of the tour! I’m sure it’ll be very well covered
Now how did I not know about this??? Always wanted to see one
Hopefully you’re able to catch it sometime!
They are currently in Laredo Texas… They passed through South Texas yesterday.
Fantastic footage!
Thank you! Cheers!
Very cool video and enjoyed. Have a wonderful rest of your saturday.(Steve)
Thanks Steve! Enjoy the rest of your weekend
These test runs are leading up to what shall most likely be the biggest steam event of all three nations that this tour runs through. To my knowledge, no one has ever done it before, so this will likely make 2816 historically famous (like Flying Scotsman's 100mph record and the meeting at Promitory Point) in addition to her current popularity. It's also good to see Daylight 4449's auxiliary tender out and about, even with it being in CP colors. Interesting note: both auxiliary tenders are from articulated steam locomotives. 4449's is from SP 4219 (hence the tender's number) and the other one is from a Delaware and Hudson challenger.
It will be quite the trek! I’m really looking forward to seeing all the videos of her across the continent!
I think this trip might be the longest in North America since the Freedom Train in 1976
Just saw the 2816 this past Tuesday rolling southbound through the town of Olds I was pretty surprised because I was not expecting it
Glad you got to see it! She sure is impressive
Yes
Just regarding crossing bell sounds , I prefer the acual bell 🔔 , not the E type, cool train though
Great captures!
Thanks!
Great stuff Rob!
Thanks Chris!
I almost forgot about the tour. It will be one neck of a trip - from Canada all the way to Mexico. A d to think they've been doing shakedown runs for like what feels like a year now just to be sure she's ready to go. Crazy.
*one HECK of a trip. Stupid auto correct.
It sure will be! Never thought a CP steam engine would be running across the KCS network or even down into Mexico!
Great done video :)
Thank you very much!
I keep pestering my relatives to find out if the 2816 will make another run through the Crowsnest Pass, if they did the last time seats were sold out.
I would love to see the 2816 going by Frank Slide!
Needs an ole caboose
It sure does!

Whistle sounds laike cak cak
That’s air actuated whistles for you
The original steam whistle definitely sounds better! Unfortunately it’s not used as often
