It doesn't matter tho, I will always sing my lyrics to it, it reminds me of the best times like when I sang it to them, bcuz it was so true from my heart. I like how this song is a reversal of the typical pop song. Instead of the singer admitting he's no good and asking for his lover's forgiveness, Petty says that the woman's lucky simply because he's the only one that can put up with her and can leave her at any time. I just realized that Tom wrote the lyrics with Mike Campbell in mind. Hear me out, I’m not just trying to stir the pot. I’ve just spent the last several hours reading every interview with Mike Campbell and everything I could find that quotes Tom. There is a lot of jealousy in great bands and between great artists. Mike wrote the track for this song and Tom wrote the lyrics. They didn’t write all their songs that way but several notable ones they did. During the making of this album Mike brought Tom a track he wrote that Tom and Jimmy Iovine didn’t feel it had the right fit for Southern Accents. Mike with Toms blessing and Jimmys encouragement took the track to Don Henley and it became a little song you may have heard of The Boys of Summer. Mike mentions in several interviews how that the success of the song was always uncomfortable between them even to the point Mike would change the radio station if it came on when they were in the car together. You Got Lucky was a big song for The Heartbreakers in the mid 80s. The video was groundbreaking it had a place in the culture of the time. If you followed them pretty seriously you know they hardly ever played it live if ever. Reason being from Mike that Tom didn’t like the song. My take is he didn’t like it because he knew and Mike knew what it was really about. He wasn’t comfortable singing it with Mike a few feet away from him. You have to remember that Mike wrote Stop Dragging My Heart Around the hit duet Stevie Knick’s and Tom put out. If you know the story of Mike and Tom meeting it was really an accident. Tom was going to audition a drummer for Mudcrutch who happened to be roommates with Mike. They needed some additional guitar for the audition so the guy trying to be the drummer mentioned the guy in the other room can play so he sat in with them. After the audition Tom told Mike he was in the band. Not an offer to join. He was in the band . That’s how much Mike blew everyone away. Tom would not take no for an answer. He literally found him and changed both their lives and the world forever. Everyone who knows what they are worth has an ego and Tom Petty is brilliant and so is Mike Campbell . Tom was the leader of the band and was probably feeling some insecurities about the success of the band on their last few albums. There was always pressure to follow up the success of Damn the Torpedoes so I’m sure there was tension in the band. All great bands have tension. The price of greatness is often an egothat goes unchecked until it’s too late and you really have to do some soul searching to get yourself and your relationships in order. Tom was a fighter it was pert of his DNA . He didn’t take shit from anyone . I believe that song came from real emotions he was having at the time ,nothing to break up the band over , just made it uncomfortable to sing and I’m sure after soul searching that’s the reason he doesn’t like the song. Sorry for some punctuation and and some of my grammar I was on a rant.
