- The topic of 'Max Malanaphy' has also been largely requested by a lot of you. For a while, I sort of avoided making a video since there's not a lot of information out there surrounding Max, but I tried my best to still make an entertaining video. Again, this is the second installment in my new series 'GreenGay Quickies' which consist of videos with less research, and less editing, which allows me to upload content for you guys while you wait for my more high quality videos.

The transatlantic (not English) accent and grey hair are all part of the character. There’s a reason why intelligent queens like Jinkx Monsoon liked Max because they could understand what the characterization was.
But she spoke like that out of drag too
@@secret_senshiThe fact that max keeps her character out of drag doesn't make it any less of a drag character. It's a very similar thing that Dela, Jinkx, Laganga and many other popular queens did on and off the show.
the whole grey hair thing was just another judging hypocrisy. Michelle never cared about Trixie wearing blonde hair a majority of the time, for example. yea, the grey hair is a more unusual color so it's easier to notice when it's being repeated, but criticizing a queen's specific brand when it had nothing to do with the actual challenge will never sit right with me.
Totally agree. It was uncalled for, like telling Picasso to fix a nose 🙄 Signatures and uniqueness are supposed to be part of the show, no?
jorgeous always wore small outfits and she really wasn't critiqued about it but others have been like vanjie, granted vanjie always had corsets not just small outfits period, then theres bianca del rio who always had the same hairstyle on, never got told to change it up by michelle! there really was no need for this anti grey hair arc.
this is same way i felt with dusty ray and her spots, michelle said when are you gonna stop and show some variety. and while id take this critisism from, say ep 5, you have to remember dusty was eliminated second... it feels like pushing a narrative for the sake of it

Jinx only wore orange wigs on all stars 7 and everyone was ok with it, as they should. Poor max got hate for nothing

me too, so many queens have a signature hair color, so why was max the only one critiqued about it?? even rupaul herself refuses to wear anything but blonde except the times she sometimes wears ginger.
@@moppupaws I think the issue the judges have with stuff like this is because it seems like a gimmick. No one says anything about blonde or brown wigs because they're normal standard hair colours whereas the grey seemed like a schtick to them. I don't agree with that towards Max because the grey wigs were probably already paired with her looks before the season started so it wouldn't look as good without them.
An example of a "gimmick" I did agree on was Dusty in season 10. I think her dots are cool but the way she used them in episode 1 didn't work with the look she made
i always thought it was strange that they had such an issue with max wearing grey hair but pearl wore pretty much only blonde hair all season and nobody said anything about that
i lived for max in grey tbh. changing your hair colour can be interesting for your drag, but i don't think it's necessary. look at manila with her dark hair with a streak of blonde, or ru in pretty much only blonde. honestly, if there's any queen i would like to see change her drag up a bit, it's ru herself.

The funny thing about her accent is that I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be a Transatlantic accent, which fits perfectly with her aesthetic. 🙄
Yes! it’s definitely a Transatlantic accent. For those who aren’t aware - it’s a weird halfway between a British accent and a mid-Atlantic American accent. It was used on TV and in movies back in the eta of black and white TV/movies and a bit after as well.
Plus Katya always puts on an accent it’s part of the character so I don’t know why people have a problem with max doing it
@@secret_senshi to be fair Katya doesn’t do it out of drag like some of the people you mentioned, and she also doesn’t claim to be actually Russian. It’s all about separating the character from the person which Katya does but Salina doesn’t
Max was 100% my favourite that season and I was totally bummed when she left. She was made to look crazy and self centred and that is such a shame

I never understood the whole Grey hair thing. It pissed me off cuz Max would change up the style of the hair and that should of been enough. Honestly I was glad when Ariana Grande told Max that she had the same hair style for years as well and it was okay. Idk I felt like Michelle was taking it too seriously as if it was a big problem.
I feel like the judges are always really quick to point out and make problematic anything that doesn't fit the established beauty standards of the time, like when they critiqued boy looks, pants on the runway, and in this case grey hair, which they probably found aging or something like that. it's pretty sad because they miss out on exploring new styles of drag that aren't the typical pretty/glam drag until "the times change" and they can't excuse being openly against it.
I totally agree. I do think there’s a difference between having the same hair for different runways which are geared toward fashion and having the same hair as a singer which would work very well for a brand, but drag is ALL ABOUT branding now. Not to mention how there are always inconsistencies with the judging. It makes me sad that rupaul has completely dominated the marketplace for drag queen reality tv. The shows that do exist (and don’t have a lot of the issues that RPDR have) are on RUclips and can’t compete because of how well RPDR is doing with straight audiences now.
Max is just such a unique character, she's truly a queen that deserves to have relevancy in the fanbase.
I feel like the fan base was there, but Max as the individual was just very burned by the entire production process, and needed to withdraw and recoup - which I don’t blame them for.

Max is one of the most disturbing cases of RPDR producing.
It's really disgusting how they treated her.
It's not simply just 'shady' from the WOW edit, but her elimination that way, it was really just cruel.
I hope she is doing okay.
Not sure if this is mentioned in the comments, but Max is currently starring as Dr. Frank N Furter in a production of Rocky Horror here in New Hampshire.

I've seen Max live just shortly after she was eliminated in season 7 when she came to Glasgow. Absolutely lovely person! Was an absolute joy to talk to and she made time for everyone that came to see her, she stayed behind after her meet and greet to spend time with everyone. That was when Lawrence Chaney was pictured with her, one of Lawrence's first pushes into the limelight.
The grey hair thing is so frustrating. They never give other performers critiques for constantly wearing blonde, they pick and choose who they give critiques for silouettes like how they gave Vanjie flack for the multiple body suits yet Plastique Tiara had the same silouettes throughout the season and got praise for it.
I just hope that Max continues to do well in their life and if they want to come full time back into drag then that would be great. If they want to just keep doing on the side every now and then, that's great to.
also jinkx is wearing the redhead wig for the whole season 7 of all stars and no one said something

@@uppermoonzeroo oh come on. They edited AS7 so no one has critiques about anything. Use a better example, like Bianca Del Rio wearing the same dress in different colors.
The accent isn't British, it's Trans-Atlantic (Katherine Hepburn had it) which completely fits with Max's character aesthetic. The grey hair isn't an issue for me; it's her signature. Asking her to change it is equivalent to asking Trixie to change her make-up, or Violet to not wear a corset. Production DID do her dirty - why try to make her look unhinged on her way out the door? In the words of Dorothy Parker:
"And if, my friend, you'd have it end,
There's naught to hear or tell.
But need you try to black my eye
In wishing me farewell.
I bet Max was edited like that because of she helped Pearl during the despy award episode. After that episode, Max's performance suddenly declined. Something fishy might happened behind the scene.

She is worthy of a position on all stars but only when she is ready, of course. I am sure she has the best track record of any early outs. I would love for her to return some day and show us how amazing she is.
early out? she got to episode 7 and placed 8th without the return of trixie pushing her to 9th, competing in 7 competitive episodes before her elimination, and there were 5 more after her elimination including the top 4 music video, so she’s definitely not an early out, a mid out for sure

Words can not describe how much love and respect I have for Max. The elegance, the fashion, the poise, the talent, the vision and literally everything else about her is absolute perfection.
Max is such a talented singer. Her cover of "Dance with U" was the only cover that really surpassed the original version, I felt.

the hair thing is really weird given jinkx’s ginger hair and raja having gray most of the time. also trixie wearing the same blonde most of the time.
i mean jinkx only started wearing strictly ginger wigs basically after her season, but i agree with trixie especially (as a trixie fan)
I think it’s because it mimics their real hair color (Raja’s hair is grey, Jinkx’ is Red) and Trixie is bald so they gave her leeway. Max is younger, so it might have bothered Michelle that she was intentionally wearing grey hair when she’s blonde.
It’s still silly, but it’s a thought.
Max was under appreciated on the show. I can definitely see her winning All stars. She deserves a redemption

Max is to this day one of the most intriguing and well-rounded characters that has ever been on any drag race. Easily in my top 10 queens.
if Max competed on a more current season (10 and above), she would've never had that anti-grey hair comment in the first place. it's crazy how the things that considered "unconventional" back then is now considered mainstream.
I’m still not over Michelle visage’s ridiculous critiques of Max considering other queens have gotten away with doing the same makeup and hair that they do all the time.
Michelle doesn't really like anyone who stands out and grabs attention more than others. She'll tell someone to not 'repeat' the same type of makeup (like she did with Dusty Ray or Daya Betty) but only of they're an 'alternative' queen. She'll also demand they do 'glamour' if it's not their normal style. However, a 'glamour' queen can do exactly the same type of eye and lip every episode without a single comment. It almost feels like 'bully the weirdo' energy at times, whether intentional or not. 🖤

I mean it blows my mind how some of the critiques that they had towards queens they clearly miss the cultural reference that the queen is making and blame it on generational stuff. I think there was a studio 54 look that someone was going for and it Michelle was saying how it wasn’t giving studio 54 even though it was literally the hair, clothes, and make up that they wore then and not your stereotypical 70s disco look.

Max looked good in those wigs first of all.
Honestly at this point i feel like we need a new drag race with different judges. I know it's a competition but criticizing things that have nothing to do with the challenge while heading franchises in other countries where the MAIN JUDGES are not really in touch with the pop culture. Gurl. AND not being able to take jabs back (that are not as part of a roast) isn't something i want to remember of a show.
Max' style is something that I adore. A vintage beauty with a penchant for noir aesthetics, she was dark yet classy, a combination that I don't see a lot, specially for such a young queen. Many seasons of drag race and other drag shows have come and gone, and she stills feels unique. The only ones comparable to her in my opinion are Dovima Nurmi from Drag Race Spain and Enorma Jean from Drag Race Italy, high fashion beauties with grey hair and dark sophistication, but they COULD NOT be more different than Max in attitude, both being too diva-ish for comfort.
On that note, it is also frustrating that Dovima doesn't turn looks on instagram, being too busy in petty feuds on twitter, and after her dramatic Willam-esque disqualification, I dont think Enorma will ever appear on the show again. I guess Joe Black as well, but I dont think Ru and her are on goods terms after the H&M fiasco..
When will a queen reclaim the old-hollywood glamour/gothy archetype on the show and have success with it?
The thing is Max was well edited. His hand was in everything. His style was his calling card. Now the queens have extremely high concept and expense drag. And the looks, often cookie cutter, are almost always well above thier actual talent or concepts.
I know that this is a quick video, but how could u not mention how sweet and kind Max was when she was coaching Jaidyyn during the acting challenge when Jaidyyn was getting stuck in her head?? That really made me love Max even more, and it showed that she had great leadership skills.

I think the one thing people talk about that wasn't mentioned was why Miss Fame wasn't in the bottom against Max. Its speculated this because the show wanted to keep Fame even tho Jaidens snatch game had more laughs over Fames. Also Jaiden was seen to be a brilliant lipsyncer so it was an easy way to snipe Max out of the competition.

I’ve hung with max at their apartment when they came to Australia on tour They are very chill and nice, and NOT like she was on TV, we talk still on Facebook sometimes or send eachother a heart every now and then ❤️
I hung out with Max randomly too in Brighton. Along with Jynx. Dunno why they gravitated to me and my friends. But we ended up going to their hotel after for a few drinks and weed.

if you are able to, please tell them i LOVE them, that they're are absolutely one of the most underrated queens and that all of the anxiety and perfectionism caused by their insecurities caused by the shade that was thrown at her in the past are more than valid. they are an incredibly talented, unique and out the box drag queen, that should've definitely be a winner in everything they could come up for. if they ever decided to come back as her drag queen persona, it would be one of the most iconic and amazing comebacks ever, they are such an inspiration, and they make everyone clear that they shine for themself, not for the rpdr show itself.

I don't know if this is just a rumour but this is what I've heard about Max returning to All Stars. Allegedly, she said she doesn't want to return to All Stars because of “untrustworthy people”.

That Pearlescent look Pearl gave on that Despy award challenge is beyond iconic and underappreciated.
i also felt her elimination was so random and weird, as she was doing so well in the competition and had won two challenges before being eliminated. i expected her to go so much further in the competition than she did.

Nobody complained to Raja about her grey hair on All Stars. How the show has changed
Raja is a "senior", all the way from Season 3, and apart from it being her second time on the show, it's All Stars, which is way more lenient about the queens taking liberties with the challenges' themes to fit their personal styles or brands.
At least as far as I know with my All Stars knowledge. I never got past US Drag Race season 10 or All Stars 3.

It is pretty unique that Max was Max the entire time on the show. I can see where it would wear on the other competitors. Other queens who do characters (Jinxx, Ben dela Creme, Katya, Jaymes Mansfield) stop doing their character when they aren't in drag. It had to have been exhausting to stay "on" the whole time. I can also see why it kind of made the seeming "breakdown" of the stage moment believable in the edit.

In a way, I think that Max has been on the opposite journey to queens like James Mansfield, who despite being early out and maybe not too favored by the Drag Race fandom, they continue pushing through with their own content and to build up their own brand, to reach fan favorite status today.
Another AWESOME subject for these videos. I loved MAX so goddamn much, I am still fucking bitter about how she was treated.
Max will always be one of my favorites. I had the absolute honor of meeting her at a live show in Boston a few years back and she was amazingly warm and friendly and so so funny. She said she recognized me from Instagram, gave me a few really big hugs, and talked with me and my friends once the show she was in ended.
Season 7 will always be weird for me because it’s the one that has a ton of my favorite queens but is also my least favorite season to watch.
Thanks for another amazing video, LOVE Max and I hope she returns (if she feels like it!). To me she came across very likeable in her season btw - a bit strange, sure, but in the best way possible 🤷♀️🤷♀️

Max was absolutely done dirty. It doesn’t matter how much you’ve built someone up previously if you throw it all in their face and make people think they’ve literally gone insane the next. That might make it worse, because it’s a “how the mighty fall” moment. That part during her elimination should have never been shown in any capacity - she was literally having trouble breathing and needed water. It was a First aid situation not television - but definitely shouldn’t have been cut and edited to make Max look both completely self absorbed and likely insane.
I mean Jaremi managed to still do something with his fanabase despite getting one of the worst edits of the franchise for 2 full seasons
@@GreenGayYT he did, but he’s never going to lose that villain tag. Even with everything we know now (and some people will only ever watch the series and never get any outside context). I think it would’ve been hard to edit Jaremi into a hero, but his edit was dirty. I wonder sometimes how he actually felt about it, deep down, because we see a fairly strong Jaremi on the outside (he moved away from drag, even, though was it because of how he was edited in his appearances or just his time?) And I’d argue that being framed a villain is always going to net you more fans than someone who let the pressure get to them and fell apart.
MAX was the reason i started watching drag race and because of that she's still my favorite queen of the franchise. i saw the death becomes her look EVERYWHERE on tumblr, twitter and facebook and i was OBSESSED and i had to check it out. MAX's death becomes her, bearded and green runways are still three of the best looks to grace this show. they're simple, but extremely gorgeous and effective. idc, it's true, fight me. sure she did deserve the bottom 2 on snatch game, but not against jaidynn. miss fame should've landed in the bottom (and probably would've sashayed). but the production knew that max was a threat against the finale they wanted. they knew miss fame would be popular, so they wouldn't want her to leave the show that episode, cause she could go on to the finale. but more precious than fame, they had pearl (wow i'm a poet). and i say this because, even though i love her, pearl was clearly being dragged by the producers to make her way to top 3. if max stayed, pearl's spot on the finale would probably be filled by MAX.
i'm still so upset about what rpdr did to Max
she is the one who showed me how amazing a person can look with such a unique hair color
she is literally the reason why i want to have white hair for the rest of my life

I still don’t get the “no grey hair” thing. Pearl wore blonde hair all season, and nobody said anything. Trixie had the same makeup (I know it’s her brand and I love Trixie) all season, and nobody said anything.
