What I think also gets missed with Ace is just how powerful his rhythm playing is, too. When Gene and Paul are running around the stage, it falls to the lead guitarist and the drummer in Kiss to hold the songs together. Ace's tone was also excellent.

Who was influenced by Ace Frehley? Here's a little list - Dimebag Darrell, Zakk Wylde, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and I could add to the list until I'm blue in the face. Now he's probably not considered the best guitarist but the most influential. If you listen to Kiss Alive listen to all of his leads. He's got great solos on that album. Great lesson. As a little kid, I’m pretty sure I wore out Destroyer and Rock and Roll Over. Those were the first two Kiss albums I owned and they were pure, visceral energy. Your closing remarks are spot on and for me, those ideas also apply to singers.
Ace sometimes is denigrated as not being a top player, but I don't think the guy ever played a non-kickass solo. And his playing had everything one wanted or needed in rock guitar in the 1970's: blasting, pentatonic/minor/chromatic runs, a lot of super fast and super hot pull-offs and hammer-ons, a ton of punch to every note, and just enough heaviness, flash and grittiness to fit the style of the music that Kiss played. Add the fact that he played a Les Paul through Marshalls, it was full-on, classic 70's rock and roll. I was more into Mick Ronson and Marc Bolan, but I remember the first few Kiss albums were full of good rockers, and I learned a few of those riffs, just like every other guy (or girl) with a guitar in their hands did back in the day. Great vid here, as per usual.
Great lesson, thanks! Ace played lead guitar very lyrically, he was also very dramatic with his lead lines, even though some might consider him a little basic and repetitive, Well, he took basic and repetitive into the stratosphere emotionally, naw, into outer space!
Hey man, great stuff. And no need to be an apologist. We all know that there are music snobs that turn their noses on KISS and think the only band that ever existed was Rush. I'll take KISS any day of the week and twice on Sunday. And Ace is easily in the top 5 most influential guitarists that ever lived. Virtually EVERY band that came up in the late 70's through the 90's cites KISS as an influence!
That second lick made me smile as it took me back to my playroom circa 1978 jammin' to ALIVE II with my guitar (tennis racket) as a rowdy 8 yr old. I have loved Ace my whole life man and I really enjoyed this video.
Rock and roll all night , studio version has no guitar solo. Live version though does. Kiss alive 2, Right after Detroit Rock City, when the opening note slowly creeps in then harmonicly feeds back into King of the Nighttime World still gives me chills to this day. Best 2 show opening songs 👍
Quite simply, in my lifetime, one of the most, if the most influential guitar players of the 70's. Respect? Ace could care less...he was never better than most players from his day....Page, Beck...Ace could not pick up their jock, but he was good...damn good, and better than most. His legacy in his influence... he is the only reason I play guitar...
Detroit Rock City, 59 now and it's still an anthem, very exciting to play, as a keyboardist, i respect guitarist and their dedication, Mr. Ace, thanks for the memories. Great video
I'm claiming this as a great video Even though I haven't watched it yet! Thanks for doing the ace video. Ace of the reason I started playing guitar. Aces influence more people to play guitar than any other guitarist. Now to watch the video :-)
Kiss Alive from '75 influenced a lot players from that era. HIs tone made that album. "Rock and Roll all night and party everyday", what a message to send a 10 year old out onto the world.
Every guitarist, songwriter, and producer should watch every single one of your videos, no matter what level they think they have achieved. I'm constantly and sincerely humbled by your work and knowledge of the instrument and music in general. Your generosity with it is also astounding. Thank you so much for all you do.
I'm with you about Ace's influence. I picked up a guitar 40+ years ago because of Ace and Destroyer album. Technically he's not a Randy, Eddie, George, Jake et al but without him, guitar wouldn't be the same!
First stadium gig I went to was the Dynasty tour in 1980 at the ripe age of 12. The world changed for me completely that night and although I didn't start playing till I was 15, I haven't stopped. For me guitar doesn't need to be complicated and fast, or flashy and shreddy just fun. Ace's playing always sounded like good fun to me.
Ace had the same effect on me as a kid. I was 12 when I went to see them in '77 on their Love Gun tour. I left knowing I I was going to play guitar. Literally been playing ever since. In fact, my band jammed today (we rocked "C'mon and Love Me"!).
I really never listened to Kiss growing up as a guitar player....I thought they were a joke....Thanks for enlightening me and really enjoy watching your channel....You are a "GURU of Guitar Knowledge"
Ace was the dude back then. I remember being bummed out my parents got me KISS Alive! instead of Alive II, until I listened to Alive! I’ll be trying these licks.
Ace is basically the only reason I wanted to be a musician. He was my first and ony real guitar hero, and I have never looked back. His solos and the way he plays them, the vibrato and this intense aggression is just mesmerizing. I am now 47 years old, and I play in a band myself, in a completely different genre, but to me, it all started with Ace. And there is only one way for me to have a good time when looking back at times,; pop a beer or twelve and and sit back and enjoy these first Kiss albums :)
Trying to copy Ace is surprisingly hard, mostly because his timing and rhythms are pretty intricate. I think that's largely why I never tire of hearing his solos. They're rhythmically interesting.
Ace would tell you: "It's the way I do what I do, Curly!" Seriously, that picture of Ace in the 'Evolution Of KISS' booklet in Alive II was the final straw to me switching from drums to guitar in 1978. That pic of ace holding his Les Paul being bathed in light - that was it for me! I wanted to be up there and gave up the drums for guitar. Little did I know, at the same time, this dude named Eddie Van Halen had done the same thing years earlier with the instrument switch! haha!
As far as I can remember ... Ace from outer space ... played the best solos in the 70s ... and ... you can whistle each of them. One of my faves is the solo in "Save your love" ... incredible cool .... I just whistle is yet ...
I was a 8 yr old kid in the mid seventies, listening to Kiss in my bedroom everyday. Bought every album I could get living in small town Oklahoma. Ace Frehley was my very first musical influence ever, and I still absolutely love his licks! He just doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He’s one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. Imo.
Thank you for this! ACE is my guitar hero, the reason I play guitar, I wanted to be a lead guitar player like Ace... I agree so much with this video, he is a legend in his own time and highly under rated, and should not be ... he did influence most of today's players.

Great video dude! I'm surprised you didn't mention mention Ace *tapping* during that one section of the solo -- sounds like he's tapping with the pick edge
Melody within the melody...Ace's solos are tasteful, nasty and have feeling. Well done!!! Sir Brewster never cease to amaze. I got some serious catching up to do...thanx!!!
Go listen to both the studio and 'live' versions of Rock Bottom, Black Diamond, Deuce, Strutter, Parasite, She, Cold Gin, Shock Me, Watchin' You, Got to Choose, Nothin' to Lose, ... it's all great music because of its positive energy and style. It's the ultimate fun rock & roll!
I Music store owner who does Kiss cover band, and loves Kiss, told me Ace did and recorded a tapping solo way before Eddie brought it to the masses. I don't know the song but it's out there.
Back in the mid 80's I used to go to the Marquee club in Wardour St. and watch Dumpy's Rusty Nuts. Back then you remembered as much as you could then spent all night learning what you'd seen and heard. Dumpy actually played that hyper-pentatonic lick and I've played it ever since! I never knew where it came from :o)
Hi! I enjoyed this video a lot. I was never a fan of Kiss growing up in London in the 70s, I wasn’t really exposed to them. A mate in school gave me an EP of theirs which I still have and I think it has Shock Me and Christine. I was getting into UFO at the time so didn’t really like the Kiss sound on that EP or their image. I really liked this lesson though, I always loved the grittier players more than the constant up and down shredding. Gary Moore and company. Where I live now I know a lot of guitar pros and teachers and they are always telling me to listen to some Kiss 😃 Lick 3 is definitely going into my bag of tricks! A cool sounding lick and achievable for my style of playing and my level. Very interesting today, thank you 👍

Frehleys Comet rocks, I had the cassette in The late 80s Rock Soldiers, Into the Night, Something Moved , We got Your Rock, Love Me Right, Ace Frehley, Todd Howarth, are Phenomenal guitar solos, Ace Frehley is my number 1 guitar player, next Eddie Van Halen, George Lynch, Warren De Martini...
Top notch job of rambling for 20 minutes . I'm totally impressed . Keep rockin 👍✌️ 🤩 🌈🎵 🎶 ➕💟 ☮️
That last lick was epic! Grew up in 60's and 70's. Real music back then!
really fun breakdown of ace's style
Great video dude! I'm surprised you didn't mention mention Ace *tapping* during that one section of the solo -- sounds like he's tapping with the pick edge
You have to do Ace Frehley lessons video 2,if possible do another, and Kiss Chords video. Thank you,James Smith.
Melody within the melody...Ace's solos are tasteful, nasty and have feeling. Well done!!! Sir Brewster never cease to amaze. I got some serious catching up to do...thanx!!!
Thank you
Ace’s solos were a song within the song and you knew it was Ace. Thanks for the hybrid pentatonic lesson.🙏
Ace is a legend! thanks great as always. keep cranking these out!
Another great lesson, Dave! The zoom ins on USB Ace were hilarious as well. Keep mixing it up, bro!
I LOVE Ace Frehley and I love these lessons. Thank you so much! Fantastic job brother.⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
I Music store owner who does Kiss cover band, and loves Kiss, told me Ace did and recorded a tapping solo way before Eddie brought it to the masses. I don't know the song but it's out there.
Elvin he was tapping on Alive! Way before Eddie was known.
I was actually listening to Frehley's Comet this morning then I came across this. Ace Frehley rocks!!!
When me and my friend started our first band at 15, the only songs we knew in common was Black Diamond which of course had one of the best Ace solos.
Where I live now I know a lot of guitar pros and teachers and they are always telling me to listen to some Kiss 😃
Lick 3 is definitely going into my bag of tricks! A cool sounding lick and achievable for my style of playing and my level.
Very interesting today, thank you 👍
These yungins will never understand..
Let's see, Ace was to us as rocker kids, like... Dungeons and dragons or Halo is to a Basement gamer nerd 😉👍
Hahaha 😆 NOW you get it!
