Joe Walsh is one of my favorite guitarist! He plays with a lot of emotion, and his phrasing is so melodic too! One of the best. Thanks for this episode!
I KNEW you were going to do Joe Walsh soon when you mentioned him during the Ace 3 for all! Check out "The smoker you drink, the player you get" album. It's a classic. I grew up on it at 6 yrs old, (thanks dad) 1973👍👍
I still listen to James Gang regularly. Joe's playing is funky, chicken pickin, blusey, with great slide, with offbeat melody lines. Listening to them doing The Bomber live, with his echoplex throwing his notes all over the room was mesmerizing! Probably next to seeing the Beatles live I would put James Gang, The Eagles and The Who at a close number Two! Love Joe!
I seen Joe for the first time with the James Gang in Detroit and I had not heard guitar played like that. I said to my buddy, where'd he come from? He plays like he learned hidden away in the backwoods somewhere! I was his fan by the time he finished his first song! Awesome history of way cool licks and guitar style.
Joe really has his fundamentals mastered. Too many guitarists try to jump into advanced methods too early. Myself included. Try taking a few notes from a pentatonic scale and see how many riffs you can come up with, try some crazy funky timing. Wish I knew all this when I had time. I have many things in common with Joe, but the main thing is I shouldn't be alive after all the crazy things I did. LOL
Man, you are really ticking all the boxes lately. My favourites keep coming! I love Joe for his chord work, for slide as well as lovely bends. He has it all in buckets. I also prefer his solo music and The James Gang has some killer tunes. Now to watch your video...I know I’m gonna like it😎 You are gonna have to make a "Part II"!!
Great lesson on a master. Fun fact... for the Joe Walsh bending lick he is quoted calling it "the lick I stole from jimmy page". You can hear that lick on many zep tunes.
Joe Walsh is a great guitarist seen him many times never with the Eagles, He interacts with the audience in a great way. Can you please do one on Allen Collins licks he,so underrated. I love his over bends and also the best Duane Allman if you could. I love your videos
Great job Dave. If you're so inclined a Tommy Bolin episode would really be cool. Especially stuff like Ode to G , Crazed Fandango & Quadrant 4. Whatever though it's all amazing, Thanks!
Great choice! Joe does some crazy licks in Don Henley's 'Dirty Laundry' that I'd love someone to break down. Another great choice for a '3 for all' would be Elliot Easton of The Cars.
Walsh and David Gilmour are completely different guitar players . .Walsh is great but he plays nothing like Gilmour and vice versa A better fit would be calling Walsh America's Version of Paul Kossoff from Free . Walsh can't touch Gimour for melodic phrasing or Fluidity .Gilmour has no equal for that type of Gilmour
That first James Gang record is mandatory listening. Walsh is quite a character... Even after drugs and alcohol aside. Check out his string changing video. Haha
Life's Been Good, Rocky Mountain Way ... epic songs all the way. Joe Walsh slide playing is in a class of its own. Listen to Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get. I saw Joe Walsh play with The Eagles at UoF. The Dude of Rock N Roll.
A few years back, myself and four of my friends took ecstasy one night and jammed to what seemed like millions of songs. At one point during the journey, I put on this exact live video on the tv screen, and we all lost our minds. One of the guys there that night got married about a year ago, and the groomsmen blared this song on the trolley headed into the church. This lesson brought back some fond memories haha. Joe Walsh is a beast.
Joe Walsh like some of his contemporaries has such a distinctive style it commands the listener's attention. Not by technical flash but by pure emotion. He's a legend!
That episode of Live at Daryl's House is one of my two favorites. (The first being the one with Billy Gibbons.) But Dude, you can't mention the "Funks" without #50!!!
Joe is one of my main influences as a guitarist. He has so much feel and taste, he IS emotion coming at you loud and clear!!! Joe is so unique in many ways. When I hear "Walk Away" and the unreal lead and tone comin` at ya, all I can say is "How ya doin`" LOL Joes way of introducing himself. Love ya Joe!!
Oh hell yeah David! Another one of MY favorites as well, and no..I know him not from the Eagles! Old timer here, anyway..you pointed to the Barnstorm cover you have on the wall and it dawned on me that you seem to have a collection of MANY different items you've hung there and change, accordingly. Cool! Thanks for this and ALL your shows, time, lessons and listening to you is EZ for me and good pointers that fell out of my head over the years! Cheers! Rock on!
Another fine video my friend. The only thing that would make it better for me would be if you showed the artist play the lick BEFORE you break it down, some licks are über cool and I’d be hyper aware trying to learn it if I hear the result first rather that seeing the ingredients but not knowing what I’m making. Just my $0.02 opinion, I’m probably wrong. Cheers and thanks again, so many classics.
I loved what Joe said recently to his audience; "It was absolutely a *LOT* more fun being in my 20s during the 70s - than it *IS* being in my 70s during the 20s!"
I played with Joe in the 80s. He used an MXR Phase 90. They came out in 1974 and he used one on quite a few albums. But don’t forget that he used and toured with a Fender Vibratone (like a Leslie). The Mini Vent does that sound. Everything he did had rotating speaker on it, from the James Gang until now. Cheers. Max 😁👍
,,,,,yes,,,,,,,tnx, for bringing up joe,w,,,,,true guitar hero..!😯....all our lives we've been hearing his work...awesome person...quirky says it.!............easy to emulate on guitar.................p.s...please listen to Bob Dylan's new song...no guitar but 16 minutes long,,,wow.!.
Great guitar lesson I'm Joe Walsh's guitar playing😅 keep because musicians like us keep on learning I'm a Joe Walsh. And pulled up with his guitar and and Joe asked me what my favorite songs before he started the concert speechless and then I said walkaway funk 49 Rocky do all said you got it you did marvelously perfect and flawless it was just drinking days but he nailed it perfectly❤❤❤
Followed Joe since 1969. Great all-round musician and song writer. And I'm also a big fan of Barnstorm, the whole concept and the contributions by numerous great players. This work really launched Joe into new dimensions of his career. Thanks Joe. The player you smoke the drinker you get.
Why doesn’t anyone ever mention “County Fair” an awesome song and the drum intro kicks ass! Dude I love your posts, especially Joe Walsh and ZZ, one problem sometimes way to much BSing for way to long, just sayin’ get it said and move on to the music🧐no offense meant I dig your channel.
IThe James Gang, Barnstorm, all of the pre-eagles Joe Walsh is very specific to my musical memory, college in Vermont and just this onslaught of amazing music, lots of talented friends. all sharing a desire to turn each other on to good music. I too remember hearing funk 48 for the first time and wearing that homemade cassette tape out. The tape had select James Gang songs on one side, and sort of a best of mix of Heads Hands and Feet--who also blew my mind on the other. Considering what was on the radio in the 90s, which was actually a super musically rich decade (the tone on the first Black Crowes album? dang) ....this was a departure, but we were kids that practiced Allman Brothers, early ZZ Top, even some Heads Hands and Feet in lieu of contemporary choices. I swear I like viewing these videos sometimes just to be able to listen to someone else geek out over these musicians that had such a big impact on me. Listening to you share you knowledge, learnin us all a little sumthin, feels more like hangin out with that musical family of friends, full of good stuff, but nice n laid back.
Love Joe Walsh, he connects to the listener, in a simple and very effective way. Expession is everything. I play in an Eagles tribute band in Australia, and i get to learn a lot of his later work, and i love it. Awesome segmant AGAIN! Thanks
Because Im only 62 I missed James Gang first time around but was fortunate to see them on a reunion tour in 2006. Absolutely incredible. Every lick, every beat, it was all there. No fancy colored lights, none of that. Just pure rock and roll.
I've never been taught how to play any Joe walsh (he's friggin awesome) anyway I ve been playing stuff like life's been good .,walk away all by ear/memory .,I'm 58 and Joe is very influential for me....thank you for showing the right way man...rock on brother
Why tune down, Joe never did. Don't get it. Good video and good playing. Like the Funk 48 admonition! The majority of that live recording is played in D minor. I'm not sure where you are getting the E minor reference. Yes, there is an instrumental break with the flute, etc., in E minor. It then reverts to D Minor to conclude the live recording. But the song is in D minor, exclusively so on the studio recording.
Gotta love Joe! Thank you so much! I'm sure you also enjoy his "Can't Argue with a Sick Mind" live album which came from a Don Kirshner's Rock Concert episode. Don Felder also played in that concert which featured a lot of the Barnstorm stuff. Very much appreciate your post!
David, your vibrato technique is spot on. Beautifully controlled and accurate, and you never miss pitch on the bend. There are quite a few other “instructors” here on RUclips who would be well advised to learn from you in order to eliminate their awful frantic string shake.
Joe's live 1971 guitar tone with James Gang is amazing and is the best vintage les Paul/ Marshall tone ever . Even better than Pages les paul Marshall tone in 72/73 although i always liked Pages tone better when he was using Hiwatts in 70 and 71 .
you're totally right idk what it is but joe walsh has a special quality that makes him amazing. he can make a guitar sound good. I'm a shredder I'm trying to get more educated in blues and I'm finding out it's harder than I thought the phrasing is tricky and it takes a lot of practice to play well . but I'm putting in the effort hopefully soon my blues will catch up with the rest of my playing.
It took me playing all the 80s stuff to realize I missed all the tasty stuff like Joe. So I backed the truck up and now I'm basking in all this good stuff. 👍
When I first listened to my 12 inch single version of rocky mountain way (which had turn to stone on the flip side), I convinced myself that Joe was using a slide for most of those licks, It wasn't until I saw him on T.V. that I realised that a lot of them were actually precision bends. Thanks again for another great video David.
Five years after he released Turn to Stone, the Pink Floyd released Pigs (Three different ones) on the Animals album, but I reckon Joe was just too much of a nice guy to sue them for it.
Love his playing since hearing walk away. Would have loved to hear how he and rory together would have sounded. By the way thanks for the insight 🙏 and lessons. 🙏
The lick you're calling "The Joe Walsh lick," I think he got that lick from Jimmy Page, though JW maybe used it more frequently. But so many of what we now think of as "stock hard rock licks" are in fact Jimmy Page licks - much the same way that many early rock and roll licks are Chuck Berry licks. Listen to the Zep I and II and you'll hear a lot of licks that are part of just about every hard rock guitarist's arsenal. These licks - the way they are played now - came from Jimmy - whether you copped them from Jimmy himself, or from Joe Walsh, Ace, Frehley, the guys in Lizzy, Skynyrd, Michael Schenker, or Slash, or Zakk Wylde, or someone else who was copping Jimmy.
To me, Joe has a playing style that highlights transient delay! Some call it pick scrape or expression. He's said so himself, " Tone comes from the picking hand!" Steve Cropper is another Great artist and example of this style. Well done and thanks for sharing brother!
Man about a month ago i was watching some old Joe Walsh video's and the dude inspired me to go buy my first electric guitar. He is truly a legend. I got a Epiphone Les Paul and one of the first video's i come across was yours. I'm looking forward to learning to play it and ill be looking threw your videos to help me.
Joe Walsh is one of my favorite guitarist! He plays with a lot of emotion, and his phrasing is so melodic too! One of the best. Thanks for this episode!
Best guitar lessons on RUclips period
Yes! I was just thinking he would be a great subject for a video. Your lessons are my favorites on RUclips by far, keep up the fantastic work!
I KNEW you were going to do Joe Walsh soon when you mentioned him during the Ace 3 for all!
Check out "The smoker you drink, the player you get" album. It's a classic. I grew up on it at 6 yrs old, (thanks dad) 1973👍👍
Also the greatest album title of all time
I still listen to James Gang regularly. Joe's playing is funky, chicken pickin, blusey, with great slide, with offbeat melody lines. Love your video and testimony ... but let me ask you a side question ... what is the story of the framed picks ?
Joe really has his fundamentals mastered. Too many guitarists try to jump into advanced methods too early. Myself included. Try taking a few notes from a pentatonic scale and see how many riffs you can come up with, try some crazy funky timing. Wish I knew all this when I had time. I have many things in common with Joe, but the main thing is I shouldn't be alive after all the crazy things I did. LOL
It’s hard to nail down but he’s probably my favourite guitar player.Definately most of the reason for my Les Paul obsession
In The City...Put's me in a different dimension
Music at 6:44
E sharp??
Analog man is hilarious. Joe Walsh at his best.
I would like to hang out with him, he's awesome, but at the same time I wouldn't truly believe anything he says haha
I heard Joe before these other lame guys.
Love Joe Walsh and his early records. When my cousin met him Joes he says, "hi, I am whats left of Joe Walsh. Hilarious...
The framed Barnstorm album cover is a nice touch here... that was Joe's Sgt Pepper. Just an amazing album, very underrated.
My favorite of his. Very eclectic.
Fantastic! For me simply the best lp of the seventies.
Man, you are really ticking all the boxes lately. My favourites keep coming!
I love Joe for his chord work, for slide as well as lovely bends. He has it all in buckets. I also prefer his solo music and The James Gang has some killer tunes. Now to watch your video...I know I’m gonna like it😎
You are gonna have to make a "Part II"!!
Life's Been Good was an amazing song in 1978. It is still an amazing song in 2020. Timeless. Love Joe Walsh !
That is my least favorite on that album. It took me a while to appreciate it but I love the other cuts.
Ashes the rain and i...
Massive Joe Walsh fan - with Robin Trower , was the 'stoner rock' I still love. County Fair never tires.
Excellent episode.
Would you consider covering Neal Schon
mark dakel definitely a Neal Schon segment
Yes Neal Schon would be a great video!
Ditto
I love Joe’s solo work it’s fantastic. The most underrated band of all time is the James Gang! 🍺’ski u rule.
Joe Walsh plays like he’s got his own genre going on. Love his licks
Love these "old dude" episodes you've been doing! How bout Martin Barre?
Kevin Martin - “Old Dude”?!?! Uh, Joe Walsh and I are the same age.......
@@SMart7751 So collectively you guys are 144 years old.
GREAT LESSON AGAIN!! Joe is always a inspiration to want to play better all the time !! So is Gary Dean Richrath!!
use to watch the James gang in kent ohio back in the day
Me too❤️I used to go to Kent every night I lived in Stow
I also love the sound of Joe's voice which seems to project his sense of humour and oozes charisma.
Great lesson on a master. Fun fact... for the Joe Walsh bending lick he is quoted calling it "the lick I stole from jimmy page". You can hear that lick on many zep tunes.

Great job Dave. If you're so inclined a Tommy Bolin episode would really be cool. Especially stuff like Ode to G , Crazed Fandango & Quadrant 4. Whatever though it's all amazing, Thanks!
Hay brewster. How have you been.
Joe Welsh. ICONIC ROCK IT HITS YOU IN THE SOUL. AS USUAL THE CREAM RISES TO THE TOP.
Great choice! Joe does some crazy licks in Don Henley's 'Dirty Laundry' that I'd love someone to break down. Another great choice for a '3 for all' would be Elliot Easton of The Cars.
America's equal of David Gilmour.... Never a bad note.. always hummable... Perfect melodic sense....
Walsh and David Gilmour are completely different guitar players . .Walsh is great but he plays nothing like Gilmour and vice versa
A better fit would be calling Walsh America's Version of Paul Kossoff from Free .
Walsh can't touch Gimour for melodic phrasing or Fluidity .Gilmour has no equal for that type of Gilmour
I always Loved Joe! He's one of the most underrated players ever!
"Standing on the runway, waving at the plane...there goes everything I own! Luv' me some Joe Walsh!
His licks on The Confessor and You bought you Name it was extremely technical.
Barnstorm is Joe's best band.
Lovely lesson as usual! Any chance for some Paul Kossoff? Thank you for your amazing work as usual, Dave!
Walsh and Kossoff have a quite similar lead guitar style . Different approaches to rhythm playing but they construct their solos in a similar fashion
I grew up on EVH, but Joe Walsh was always killer in my book.
Really cool that you're dipping back to early to mid 70's with Gibbons, May
and Joe.
.....and Blackmore, Page, and Nugent.
Joe is one of the most underrated guitarist of our time!
That first James Gang record is mandatory listening.
Walsh is quite a character... Even after drugs and alcohol aside. Check out his string changing video. Haha
There's only 1 Joe Walsh. Totally has his own point of view on the guitar. Love his style. Total FEEL!!!
Joe doesn’t get the credit he deserves.... GREAT guitarist.
I think people hear some of the stupid shit he’s done, and discount him for that.

When I was starting out playing in Sioux City, back in 1980, a guitarist I used to jam with Miles once said "Joe Walsh is a Good Jam" mZ
His 'So What' album is my fav.
Love J.W. such a unique player with great feel and his stories are top notch. "Time Out" is a fun song with a great riff!
Yeah "Time Out" and "County Fair" are 2 of my favorite 😎👍
You've got a great vibrato! How about a lesson on how to improve vibrato?
I love “You can’t argue with a sick mind”
Another fine video my friend. Are you playing thru that little Peavey modeling amp with the red light on right behind you, or is that a prop?
Great video demonstration bro, I opened for James Gang in the 60's. Joe is my favorite player too. Joe is a very humble guy for sure.
Thaddeus Proshansky Thats great! Must be great memory!
I loved what Joe said recently to his audience; "It was absolutely a *LOT* more fun being in my 20s during the 70s - than it *IS* being in my 70s during the 20s!"
Would you consider doing a video on Kim Mitchell or David Wilcox.
I played with Joe in the 80s. He used an MXR Phase 90. They came out in 1974 and he used one on quite a few albums. But don’t forget that he used and toured with a Fender Vibratone (like a Leslie). Its fun to watch and listen to you talk about Joe!

Please put together a clip on Ian Crichton of SAGA... incredible Canadian guitarist who is still relevant. ( On the Loose solo?😲)
Walsh is a badass
I have worn out 2 "So What" albums. The live at Daryls House Solo at the end of the episode is insane
Many thanks David. As you say Joe is a really 'human' guitar player. Along with Gilmour he is one of my all time favourite musicians.
8:20 lick #1. 11:57 Lick #2. 14:58 Lick #3 --Zakk Wylde uses that lick on Momma I'm Coming Home.
Great slide player as well
Love his playing since hearing walk away. Would have loved to hear how he and rory together would have sounded. By the way thanks for the insight 🙏 and lessons. 🙏
how about a link to the premier guitar stuff, thanks
Cant find it today....
thanks, one of the greats for sure! the live James Gang album is in my top ten best live performances ever
The lick you're calling "The Joe Walsh lick," I think he got that lick from Jimmy Page, though JW maybe used it more frequently. When David was talking chromatic runs, it reminded me of J.P.'s chromatic runs in Whole Lotta Love.
Joe walsh is my idol. Pretty good video next time though you should explain more in depth how to play the riffs. Like explain note for note
To me, Joe has a playing style that highlights transient delay! Some call it pick scrape or expression. He's said so himself, " Tone comes from the picking hand!" Steve Cropper is another Great artist and example of this style. Well done and thanks for sharing brother!
Joe is my fav guitarist ever.....and he is hilarious.👍🏻❤🎵✌🏻
Great Lesson Dave!! I would like to request more licks from Fran Marino!
Great video ! I hope for some licks from Jani Liimatainen one day. Best wishes from France !
One of my all time favs! Joe has the best ears in rock. Thanks Brew!
How's the playing coming along?
Please do Wafflestomp, that song from fast times at ridgemont high, can't find it anywhere.
Joe’s fantastic - thanks for the lesson David - any chance of some Peter Green ? ✌🏻🎸
The Billy Gibbons lesson made me hit subscribe. This is very cool stuff. Thanks.
Its the feeling like David Gilmore makes shredders look kind of boring
Thing about Walsh you can sing his lines they come from his voice and are memorable.
Hell yeah, Joe Walsh is the man!
Hi, I'm not a guitar player but I am huge Joe Walsh fan and I would echo everything you said about him and his enchanting music, thanks.
