What a belter of a documentary, i was born late 80s so missed all these epic raves but spent my teens becoming addicted to hard house, 37 now and still rinsing the tunes on the school run 💪💪💪💪

When I saw this documentary I got so excited, then really sad afterwards as hard house was such a huge part of my life in London from 1997-2005 when it died. Camden Palace, The Fridge, The Chunnel Club, Heat & Vauxhall Arches to name just a few.
Anyone remember Frenzied at the Bondai Bar in Acton?? lol!

I remember the first time I see Proteus at HHA in Brixton. I was stunned he blew me away. He went on to win best hard dance Dj 2 years running.
Now you barely see him in the U.K. no more where demand is just obsolete.

We did a few events at Hidden and Heaven in the mid 2000s that were really good! Frantic’s 10th Birthday at Koko (Camden Palace) will forever be remembered for queue jumping Eastern Europeans and a super, super hot temperature inside the club. Hard House Awards at Brixton Academy always a hoot too! Shout out to London 👍

Really good and accurate documentary. I was one of the lucky few who got in on the ground floor in 95-96 when we discovered Tony Devit playing at Progress in Derby. We became hardcore worshippers of hard house from then on attending Sundissential weekly through to many of Tidy Trax events. Unfortunately in 2004 the time came for me to start a family and these days were regrettably left behind.

  • @davidjones9549

Wicked documentary. The only thing I don’t agree with was the time frame being banded around for Ketamine coming on and killing the scene a bit. For me that came later, around 2004/5. Was really noticeable in Polysexual, Storm and what became pretty rare annual Sundissential events. Up to that point, for me at least, it was nothing but happy and VERY colourful people. Birmingham and the Midlands in general was where it was at for the best crowds and we went all over for this scene. Tidy’s 10th Birthday at Magna was probably the best one night event I’d been to outside of the Helter Skelter stuff! Somehow managed to walk away from doing that stuff relatively intact. Quite how is a mystery! Big respect to anyone else out there watching this that trashed perfectly good boxing boots stomping to this genre. It really was a special thing to be a part of :)

    • @TheDarkInstall

I want to start off by saying much respect and love from the “Inland Empire” in California. Second this is just me speaking on where “HardHouse” really started for me and I am not speaking for anybody else. Around 90-95 I remember hearing what was called “techno” in California which had such sets with TV commercial intros such as peewee herman, Sesame Street, pink panther and so on. Movie intros like Robocop, Goonies, Grease and so on. Then around 95-00 is a mixture of “Dance Music”, “House Music”, “Jungle” and “HardHouse”. The first time I heard a HardHouse cd was underground and this was in the 95-96. It was where I noticed they where using almost the same formula from techno and adding it to HardHouse which was really fast, hard and banging. Tetris, Pac-Man, smurfs, inspector gadget and jeopardy and so on and so forth. I did not know that at the same time on the other side of the state Chicago was doing the same and was including latin music into the sets. Where ever it started or who ever started this epic movement I’m glad I’m part of it. Much love and respect.

    I really enjoyed that.
Great to see the Lab 4 lads & Captain Tinrib and good to hear Tripoli Trax and Choci Tunes get a mention.
It was indeed the golden age of clubbing and i so agree the first time you should hear a tune is in the middle of the dance floor, not on a bluetooth speaker while walking to work.

Can anyone recommend some awesome oldskool hard house mixes please? thanks great video :)

Storm up in Coalville was always a banging night out too. Bounce 2 This events, albeit shortlived, were really decent hard nights. So many DJs not interviewed or mentioned either. Was a much bigger scene than the video kinda inferred it to be. The Weekenders that Tidy ran were also bonkers and always good for a escape.

I loved hard house when it first started to gain popularity in the mid-90s when it used to usually be mixed up with trance sounds at a whole load of underground clubs in London and the rest of England. However in the new millennium when clubs starting playing just hard house I don’t like it half as much - went to a few Sunday morning places after the main club had shut and that happened and I didn’t have that much fun. Just think of some of the best Trade mixes from the mid 90s bangin hard house with trance and hard trance mixed amongst it - those sets were amazing and just how I like it once those sets disappeared it lost its attraction a bit for me.

99-02 in Portland Oregon, there was a thriving hard house/ hard nrg scene. Then hardstyle took over for a few years. Then it died hard. Breaks took a nose dive at the same time and d&b started it’s decline into bro step. Ecstasy became thizz and girls starting dressing for porn shoots. For me, that’s when it died. It was no longer about the love of the music, seeing friends, loving the dance. It became about being cool.

In reality the underground hard house scene started to die after 1995/96 possibly in to 97 but by then something changed, the underground movement was becoming commercialised the drugs were garbage and the real underground sweat boxes of the arches were coming to an end, The massive crowds and blistering heat of rammed to the rafters underground clubs were giving way to a new era,Hard house carried on in to the 2000.s but lost its roots of the funky acid house scene from the 80,s and moved more in to outright electronics and cdj,s in my opinion. the sound the vibe the crowds the drugs peaked in 95 and for those who didn't experience that era the 2000,s onwards never came close

Yeah, for me it was 1997/8 in Sheffield at Headcharge. Some of those nights fucking went so hard. By 1999 things were at the beginning of the end. As you said, by 2000 it was over.

Come on Amo, of course an anthem can still be created, you just need the skills AND only play it in the clubs. Adam M & Ben Stevens' track titled Orange Thrush is an absolute prime example of this. Play this red mix of Adam's from 49:40 reaaaallllllyyy fucking loud man: www.mixcloud.com/djadamm/red-mix-2/

Thought the title was about US hard house Lol cool vid though. UK hard house to me is techno/rave with lasers, glow sticks and such.
