  • Working from a pastel sketch I did in the field, I use acrylic to create a vibrant under painting. When this has dried I continue the painting using oils with a painting knife. See how the painting develops from start to finish. If you enjoyed watching this please subscribe to my channel to see more videos of my paintings in progress. Oh WOW...your demo was so inspiring ...been away from art for awhile due to illness...your wonderful art is GRAND.....the way you approach your subject and the choices you make going from light to dark and back again...the shapes and sharpness . I enjoyed every aspect of your art. I see it was complete in 2015 but it's new to me. :) Wishing you all the best in your art career...you made my day.

OMG the patience this takes, the layers, and the oil must take a long time to dry, can't tell in this video if you have to wait for a while for each oil layer to dry or if you just keep going wet in wet. Very dynamic.

Hi Chad, I use acrylic first which has to dry before working over with the oil. The oil stage is done in one session so I don't worry if I have to paint wet on wet oils. I do use an impasto medium with the oils which does speed the drying, though it still takes a week or two depending on the thickness of the paint. Thanks for your comments I'm pleased you enjoyed watching. Sylvia

aquariumlife sorry for the late reply. I mostly use Lukas painting butter Medium No 5 for oils but Windsor and Newton do a similar one.

Hello,I love the painting. But, I wonder why you switched to oil?Could the entire painting have been done in acrylic? Was your substrate Gessoed paper, I noticed it moved with your paint? If so, how many coats of gesso did you use?Did you glaze the painting after it dried?Thank YOU!

b brookshire Hi Thanks for your comment. I'm working on MDF board which I prime with a coat of gesso. I like using acrylic for the first stage of the painting as it drys very quickly and as I use a heavy body paint it also adds more texture to the surface. I swap to the oils for the final stage and also from a brush to a palette knife. The oils are standard oil paints so I add an impasto medium as I mix the colours this will speed the drying of the paint without thinning it. The oil paint has a lovely buttery consistency and I can work quickly and freely. I have been using this technique for many years and find it suits me. I have tried using acrylic with a palette knife but the consistency of the paint is quite different. Acrylic impasto mediums I find are grainy and work differently to the oils. I hope that helps to explain my technique, of course you can experiment with your own paints and different mediums. Enjoy painting.

b brookshire I only use one rough coat of gesso on the board and I don't varnish the finished painting.

Hi, Sylvia. Did you try oil or soft pastels after acrylic before oil? Thanks.

aquariumlife I just go straight in with the oils once the acrylic is dry. I used to do a lot of mixed media work with soft pastel over gouache and this was how I got to paint in this way with oils. Thanks for your comments.
