So when you thread it, you have to make sure that the presser foot is up. When the presser foot is up, it releases the tension discs through the first long area. You run the thread through. If the presser foot is down when you are threading the machine, it won't sit in that area right, and when you go to sew, all the thread will bunch up under the fabric and get super tangled.
