Definitely Hingis was sandwhiched between players more powerful than her - Graf, Seles, Davenport, Clijsters, Williamses, Capriati. To win 5 slams (and almost won 3 more) only indicates how good her tennis is. Because no player without equal or more power have shown to match those names. That is why Hingis' legacy is all about finesse beating power
Love seeing footage of these two playing each other still. They had a very compelling rivalry during the most stacked years of the WTA Tour when womens tennis was actually better than men's (1998-2003)
0:51 demonstrates the most powerful strategy among the Williams sisters, playing fewer matches while focusing on more Grand Slam titles. Intelligent players that they are, they focused on extending their careers and maximizing their ROI.
Points played before .51 And after was a strategy that Serena’s opponents used. They would keep the ball to center of. The curt and deep , sometimes Serena wouldn’t move her feet making small adjustments in btw points , thus resulting in Serena hitting the ball in the net.
From most of the commentators i've heard the "power era" began with Steffi and Monica - if that is what you want to believe. They certainly changed the game and made it more powerful.
I honestly think Hingis could win tournaments if she came back. Her lack of power wouldn't hurt her as much as it did back in the day. People like Wozniacki and Radwanska have no power but are doing really well right now.
Serena/Hingis could have been one of the greatest rivalries in sports. Late 90's, Martina Hingis was cocky as hell. She believed her shit didn't stink and here comes the Williams sisters. US Open 1999, Hingis defeated Venus in the semi-finals denying everyone the first Williams GS finals. Now she got Serena and Serena is tired of losing to her so she played her ass off and won her first GS. It's a shame that the fans didn't see more of Serena and Martina during the 2000s. it would have been fun.
But hingis was able to beat Davenport, Serena & Venus, Sharapova, all of them in between their peak and when she was no longer her peak. So that says something about her....
World Team Tennis is VERY different from WTA Tour tennis. Hingis won here, but it's HIGHLY UNLIKELY that she would ever win against Serena in a REAL WTA Tour match. Be that as it may, Hingis is one of the games' most greatest players, and most certainly one of my favorites. :)
The point at 2:07 shows how 'thinking' tennis works. Hingis sent Serena wide out of the Deuce court and has full control of the ball which landed at the middle. Other players would hit it hard down the line to the Ad court so Serena would have a lot of court to cover. But an intelligent player that she is, Hingis knows well that running side to side is no problem for Serena. Instead, she returned a low, weak short ball which will be harder for Serena to control since she is running. Clever clever Hingis. I hope I can think like that on court.
Serena has the highest court iq of anyone in the WTA and maybe even the ATP, Serena was not trying here at all. How would she look coming here and dominating Hingis and making her retire for good. She wouldn't kill her spirit like that.
Serena can play like Hingis ....they have the same weapons...But Serena can do it with more strongness and fastness.... It's why Hingis retired... Why a woman who was number one, doesn t play in single suddenly but continues to play in double ? But Serena Williams with her sister play in double too.😏😉 Serena is focus only in grand slams... It s her strategy.
Serena doesn't get enough credit for the craftiness she can play with... Some of the angles she can hit on her groundstrokes and direction & pace on her serve, not to mention how Serena can set up a point is strongly equivalent to what Martina Hingis did consistently....
Everyone knows that's where it began...or they should. But the sisters even took that era's game to the next level...because of the power with the extra quick athleticism and probably most of all, the huge serves and returns. If a player has all of that, clearly that is the ultimate tennis player, and therefore the type of player(s) who will be winning most if not all of the big events. The stuff that Steffi and Monica had could be said of them as well...but it's on a different level now.
you can't just look at the statisitics in tennis when it comes to comparing serena with the other greats like navratilova, graf, or evert. Look at Serena's athleticism and longevity.its incredible, and considering how competitive tennis is now a days,
I just love these two, although they have very different game styles. I hoped for a comeback in singles from Hingis after the Switzerland-Poland encounter in Fed Cup last year but that doesn't seem to be a goal for her. Too bad, she's got the physical shape required but her serve must be too weak I suppose.
completely agree, but just as janjr165 told, she was obviously too lazy to work it out, i mean, justine did have more weapons but she was just as petite as hingis is, even smaller in frame, but according to her, she worked hard to built up her body and to get more powerful in order to be able to produce her own power, and she worked out in gym to the point of crying in her own words...so there was a way, but she was just too lazy and that's it...it's a shame, but i love her anyway.
Yes, Serena is incredibly popular in the black community, especially in the U.S for reasons extending beyond her stellar achievements that you will never understand. Tennis is a universal sport, therefore, enjoyed by all people around the world. Serena Williams is quite popular among tennis buffs and those who love and respect the sport and are aware of the history, impact and contributions she and her sister have made. Not so much among hateful people and those who are racists.
I didn't begin with Graf....although she had a weapon her forehand... I guess you could say it began with Seles..she had power off both wings. But by most standards it began in the 2000...
SO true about Serena's longevity. Martina was a fine player--so was Chris & Steffi. But at 31 both were on their way out, especially Steffi whose health began to falter. Serena grabbed the oldest #1 from Chris recently and I don't think that record will be broken for a LONG time if ever. Not that there won't be great tennis players coming along, but they probably won't play that long & the money earned is more important than most anything else to many of these youngsters unfortunately.
Because unlike Hingis, Henin could generate her pace and took the match instead of winning off of her opponent's errors. Hingis was a smart player, but sooner or later the power game was gonna be too much for and what made it worse was that she couldn't find that one huge weapon. Henin had her strokes and excellent defense
Fuk Yu duhhh wtf r untalkin about? Hingis is one of tje best TENNIS TALENTS EVER! check her history and achievements and none of that compares to your microscopic achievements in life compared to hers
How can you say she faked a foot injury, we all saw it happen live on television, she had to be carried off on a stretcher. She had surgery but never fully recovered. She also struggled with a back injury too.
Todays game is about power and serving. Serena has the best woman's serve ever. If she played all three at their prime, should would just blast them right off the court. The game is different then it was thirty years ago. Those three wouuld not stand a chance in this era.
I think no one knew about it before she announced it in her retirement conference, then the ITF made it public, I don't really know to be honest, maybe the results were going public that day
if hingis was still playing she would be like radwanska she may not have hard shots but her placement of the ball from side to side is still good and her fitness, is good ,less is more, less match, play better as serena, is playing better, with less wta games, and date krumm is a good example.
Uh, just in case you haven't noticed, Serena is about to win her 50th title. She also played 300 LESS matches than Steffi. IF healthy she will catch Martina & Chris soon. Then what? 18 grand slam wins for Chris, Martina & Serena.
I'm not sure how I feel about this statement, but I will say this: Despite what anyone may think about Hingis' game, she can hang with the best of them.... even today. I think she was just lazy, and didn't want to put in the work to improve her game so that she could learn new ways to defeat the more powerful players. Even her mother said early in her career, she was a lazy practitioner of tennis. She won for as long as she could, but once the power players caught on her career was over.
Hingis has 209 weeks #1 but Serena 123 weeks Hingis has 43 titles Serena 37 ....Plus Hingis was 10 years in court Serena more than 13 years Hingis had short life in tennis but very glory
Hingis have the shame of bad loser ...the lack of courage behind adversity,a capricious and immature attitude in many matches... She s great in a court but a lot of another players don't like her.
Not true, Clijsters and Henin were just at the beginning of their careers when Hingis won her slams. In 2001, when Clijsters and Henin reached their first slam final, Hingis didn't win a grand slam. Same for Serena, Serena peeked in 2002, and Hingis didn't win a slam ever since Serena was number one. Same goes for Capriati
Hingis won off her opponents errors?! Have you seen a single pre-2006 Hingis match? Hingis had drop shots, lobs and volleys. I think you're confusing Hingis with, ahem, someone else I won't even bother talking about.
Hingis was an overachiever when she was winning slams. It was a weak era! Graf and Seles were on their way out, the Williams sisters had not yet peaked, Henin and Clijsters were just coming on the scene, and Capriati was still a drug addict. The only real rival she had was Davenport (who had a winning record against Hingis). Once Capriati got herself together she never lost to Hingis again. The Williams sisters started to dominate Hingis and Henin and Clijsters both beat her after her comeback.
Yes she did win with her crafty shots, but she couldn't win every single point that way,she still didn't have that pop on her shots and had to rely on opponents errors to win matches, simple as that. When she had an opponent who didn't miss she got overpowered, the same problem she had when she left in 2002.
I'm sorry, but Hingis was just lucky enough to be a part of the weakest chunk of years in tennis...and it's not just her dominance that showed this. Graf was mostly injured. Venus and Serena were too immature in age and their games to dominate. Lindsay, while in some of the worst shape of her career, won all 3 of her slams. Monica was still on the walkabout and on her way out soon. And my favorite example: Radwanska. She took Hingis' game to the next level, and she has yet to win a slam.
It drives me crazy when I hear commentators suggest that the "power era" of tennis drove away the game of Martina Hingis. What does that even mean?? If I'm not mistaken, Hingis won her 5 grand slams DURING the time of Davenport, Capriati, Seles, Venus, Serena, Clijsters, Henin and even Graf. They were there, they were present. Nobody drove Hingis out of the game but herself.
During 3 years ,after 1999 she have not won anything. She wins 3 grand slams in 1997,sisters Williams were young,Seles were out coz her agression and Graf had a lot of problems... A woman like her doesn t retire just 4 pleasure... She hasn't the mind and the body to win in final... Why she continues in double then...You are very naive, credule if you think it's only her choice...
wow so this is proof that a retired female player can beat a pro male player. maybe this will result in a mix of wta and atp together. maybe serena won´t have to scream racist when you ask about steroid abuse.

Gotta love these two. Brings back so much memories. Fun times.
i miss Hingis so much!!
I agree. I saw ALL of their matches, and they most certainly matched up against each other well. Phenomenal players.

Is it just me? Or Hingis can still play at the top level based on this video?
Henin had a very powerful forehand and backhand, her lobs and dropshots were amazing, her back hand her trademark.
From most of the commentators i've heard the "power era" began with Steffi and Monica - if that is what you want to believe. They certainly changed the game and made it more powerful.
Well done Martina! So another win over Serena.. no surprise there, really..
it's not really a win. it was one set played with modified rules. Why couldn't late-career Martina pull it off at a WTA event?
I honestly think Hingis could win tournaments if she came back. Her lack of power wouldn't hurt her as much as it did back in the day. People like Wozniacki and Radwanska have no power but are doing really well right now.

2:48 "What a shot for Serena." After sending Hingis wide.
She knew how to find those angles!
