maybe because quitting tennis at such a young age and remember that 1999 French open final. but now she's dominating the doubles with mirza. great cerebral game and court sense. 5 single slam titles and world no.1 ain't bad
+fix - not just, but main time. Compared to her aggressive power play I like Hingisova's intelligent and tricky style. She deserved to win, and both are the only ones who won 5 WTA-awards.
+Alyssasrealm Not even main time. So many power players failed to win a GS. Why? Its because they doesnt have something extra. Serena is actually an intelligent player. Her shots are really hard to read. And when she is in trouble she is very good at mixing up her shots, especially her serve. Its okay for some people to prefer Hingis game style. I love her game style too. But to say is "mainly" a power player is so injustice to her. Her game is a lot more than just power play.
for me, this is martina's best match ever. she battled her way to victory here and unleashed her weapons. she did everything she could and won. serena will always be up there on top but this one is just memorable for me in Hingis's performance.
I remember being pissed having missed this match. This really makes me sad that Hingis faded and quit a couple of years later because she really challenged Serena before Serena became the 3-set Monster that she is. We could have had more dramatic finals between these two if Martina held up. Oh well....Thanks for this btw.
I know that, I said I wish Martina was able to sustain her level when Serena rose to greatness so we could have more dramatic finals between the two of them.
Matina was destroyed by Venus from 2000-2001 and lost 6 out of 7 times to Venus. If she were to sustain her level, she would probably still lose most of the time to Venus.
Actually they played 4 times in 2000 and 2001, Venus won 3 of the 4. Venus won 2000 Wimbledon and US Open, both of which she had her chances and lost in tight 3 setters. In 2001, Hingis whomped Venus 6-1 6-1 in the Australian SFs, and then Venus won Miami SFs in straight sets after saving a set point in the 2nd set. All were close except the Australian Open dismantling. Their matches were always entertaining.
Hingis cerebal game was a big highlight in her skills; however, I do believe her two handed backhand was her big power shot; especially, when she used her two handed backhand down the line. That shot was one of the most powerful shots in the game. Hingis didn't rose to #1, won 3 GS titles in one calendar year (1997), and won Australian Open for 3 consecutive years (1997, 1998, and 1999) with one shot. Hingis was known for changing the direction of the ball, top spin, change in play, and being able to hit the ball anywhere on the court. An all court game. Her overhead like her namesake was virtually perfect. Both Hingis and Navratilova very seldom missed an overhead. Like never, ever.
Hingis's was very underrated, but I agree, it's one of the best of all time. Her trick was to never use more power than needed, and rely more on placement than power. As a result, it usually won her the point, and hardly ever missed
This is my favorite Martina/Hingis match. Martina really showcased her all court strengths here and her ability to take the ball early and run her opponent all over the court. She was also hitting through her shots and getting nice depth to keep Serena from dominating. Such an entertaining match!
Its a beautiful match, this era was the start of hard hitters and power baseliners dominating the game, although Hingis was still able to stay on top as world no. 1 due to her smart play and exceptional court skills. Even when she’s confronted with a formidable opponent, she was able to outsmart them with a combination of accuracy, consistency and variation of play, too bad she wasnt able to keep up with the new breed of tennis players
I remember those days when Hingis was unbeatable. She was the queen of classic tennis. Then entering the Williams sisters with their power game, that changed the whole concept of physical training for female players. The coming of Henin, Clijster, Capriati, and Sharapova proved that strength and stamina are equally important as talent and technique. To me, the 90’s and 00’s were the pinnacle for the history of women’s tennis.
Its incredible how at the beginning of 2001, Hingis beat Davenport, Serena and Venus (back to back) but then by the end of 2001, these players were wiping the floor with her. I don't understand why she never improved her serve or upped her fitness game; minor changes to her game would have made a huge difference and she would have been able to compete with the power players much better.
This is by far the greatest match these two played against each other. It's only early 2001, but you can tell Hingis is already being out hit by Serena. One third of the points Serena hit outright winners. Reason why Hingis won this in a squeaker is her constant smart thinking, taking the ball on the rise to keep Serena off balance and great net play. Within a few months tho, the big hitters were hitting Hingis off the court. Yet Hingis here shows a quick tennis mind will bail you out of trouble. Note how "business-like" both players are? Each had a point to prove to the other.
No, actually I know a LOT about tennis since I've been watching and playing for the last 12 years. It's not only me who thinks Serena is better now, it's also SERENA who said this, as well as just about every tennis analyst out there. I mentioned her movement, but everything else you said is wrong! Her groundstrokes are WAY more consistent now (placement, tactics and variety) far superior. Her serve is WAY better now (fastest serve was in 2008, 129mph) and she hit a 127 this year.
I always considered this one of Serena's toughest losses. Early Serena lost a lot of quarterfinal matches. She wasn't as mentally tough as she would become. 2001 was a very interesting year for the GOAT
This was back when Martina was still so much more confident on the forehand. She hit it deeper, harder and took it earlier than when she tried to come back twice later in her career. She also had a bit more punch on her first serve back then as well. It was well placed. When she was hitting the forehand early back then while absorbing pace along with changing directions on both sides and coming forward, she was simply a genius.
Serena is a much better player today than she was back in 2001. Back then her game was still evolving and predicated mostly on her superior athleticism. But Today's Serena is a much better tactical player. She plays with more variety now and all of her strokes are much improved (especially the serve). Serena of 2012 would have beaten Hingis here EASILY 6-1; 6-2. The only area where Serena isn't as strong is her movement. But she still moves better than 90% of the players today.
One of the best matches ever. One of the rare occasions, where a player beats both Serena and Venus in the same tournament. It's a shame Hingis lost in the final of the 2001 Australian. Capriati won and was her first GS title. In 2002, Hingis battled Capriati in the finals, where Hingis should have won but lost as Capriati handled the heat conditions better. With that match, it was a catalyst that enacted the heat rule from Tennis Australia. One would think the heat rule should have been placed a long time ago! Another rule that should have been enacted a long time ago is the point challenge. Again that catalyst involved Capriati, this time a match with Serena at the 2004 US Open. Had the point challenge system been in place a long time ago, Hingis would never had that French Open 1999 melt down. Perhaps even curbing Hingis' temper that caused her loss in the 1997 French Open which by far is her worst loss. The ITF is a like a living dinosaur! Especially, with its ridiculous ruling that Serena can't wear her Black Panther catsuit in future events. A catsuit Serena debuted at 2018 French Open. That suit was aerodynamic besides helping her with blood clot prevention. The jump suit was not the first time to make its debut. Ann White wore a white jump suit in 1985 Wimbledon compared to a black one worn by Serena 2018 French Open. Tournament officials did not ban that white jump, it was Pam Shriver, Ann White's opponent at that match, that asked that the jump suit be banned. Pam Shriver, a fashion police woman? Oy vey! metro.co.uk/2013/06/21/wimbledons-top-10-controversial-fashion-moments-3844588/
Serena is the only player in the world with a non-negative head2head against all top players. What she reached will never be reached again. Only Tennis player with a single and double Golden Slams. She's by far an incredible player. It's a shame to try to compare her to Hingis.
it may well be the one time martina beat both sisters in this us open to get to the finals and lost the final to capriati but it was definitelh one of the best highlights of her career...
Hingis truly deserve to be in the Tennis Hall of Fame. She was a talented young tennis player. Admire her even more for putting fight against ball bashers like the Williams.
Come'on this is my first time to see hingis play on court. She is amazing and genius. She is an all-rounder player as well. I wish she still plays like williams sisters. Is she married already? She plays very great. There's a lot of amazing shots from her. I'm so surprised the way she plays.
There's only a one year difference between the two in age. Serena was a brainless ball basher until 7 years later and was strategically deficient until then.
Contrary to what many people may think, it was quite evenly matched. Hingis was 6-7 against Serena and 11-10 versus Venus. They were even 2-2 in doubles 😂
Joey Convery: Arantxa not in GS obviously, but in Sydney 1998. Also Steffi defeated both in Sydney 1999. Looks like Martina was the 1st one to beat both in a slam. After her Justine Henin 2007 and Kim Clisters 2009 in US open.
Who have 23 slams ? Martina or Serena ? For me Martina don't have the mind of a champion in her life or in a tennis court. She had given up very fast when the things didn't happen as she wanted. A capricious and immature girl....
She doesn't do that today either. Did you watch Wimbledon and the US Open this year. She hardly made a sound at either tournament. Azarenka and Sharapova do all the screaming now.
Hingis is smart player without power in her games..but she still can beating so many powerfull player.. she using her intelegent to beat a lot of power games style player like Graf..Conchita..Arantxa Sanchez..Seles.Pierce.. Davenport..Capriati..Williams Sisters...even she still beat Sharapova...even she can beat power games player with so easly like she can beat Seles 6-0.6-0 in SF miami 2000..she beat Venus in SF Australia Open 6-1"6-1...she beat Sharapova in SF toray 2006..6-3.6-1...she beat Davenport in F miami 2000..6-3.6-2...
Was serena OK in this match? She looked so strange. Great match though. Good fight from both. I think serena only got better with the years. She has so much experience now and thinks a lot more on the court than back in those early years
Martina Hingis is a great player and is in the top 10-15 singles female tennis players of all time. I would say of the players still active that only Serena, Venus, and Sharapova are better.
I'm looking at this debate between wesmartin91 and condragulations, and I'll go on record to say that yes, while I'm a Serena fan, it has to do with her being the best of this era. Yes, the Williams Sisters did basically chase Hengis into (the first) retirement, and their presence on the WTA are why we have so many power-hitters in women's tennis now. Tinsy-winsy Hingis couldn't hang; Davenport, Henin, and Clijsters saw success, however, and maybe Sharapova on the back end....
delightful! indeed, the only way to defeat her is to overpower her otherwise you can't untie yourself from the knot she will get you into. We all wish Martina constitution was that of the Williamses or Capriati so that we could've seen more matches like this between the two. I just regret that it didn't happen. it wouldn't be fair though if Martina did have brawn, she'd literally cake walk every tourney. and this is why I say Hingis is better than Serena. Now if Hingis did not get injured she would have been able to change 2002 onwards and who knows what. But while Hingis was healthy and same with Serena they were about evenly matched but I'd put my money with the tennis intellect.
I think Martina never played this well again. In the finals she didn't played her best, she played fearsome, didn't take initiative and played not to win but only not to lose against Capriati, which she then did. I think the trauma of her last Grand Slam final at the French Open got to her. After that she lost confidence in her game and was never able to recover it.
i have respect for serena. she earned her titles. i think hingis should have stayed with her tennis and those two would have great rivals and great matches.
I don't disagree that Serena would beat Hingis. In fact, I don't think Hingis would have been successful in the post-Williams era at all. As you have indicated, she would have fared better in the Capriatti days.
I wish Martina could have at least won this, just one last time, she deserved it more than Jennifer as Martina had tougher opponents en route to the finals. After this she already struggled with multiple injuries.
Era la época donde el juego preciso de la numero uno del mundo podía controlar a una muy dificil y peligrosa serena Williams .Mas adelante se hizo incontrolable y prácticamente domino el circuito alcanzando records de Grand slam
This is not a knock - just an observation - how much Serena's body changed from her 20s to 30's, She definitely became much more muscular, I'm wondering if that effected her speed or flexibility at all? She seemed already very powerful when leaner. Just a question here. Venus, Steffi,'s body seemed to remain on the svelte side througout their career. I winder when her coach, Patrick said recently for her to win another GS - she will have to make substantial changes - I wonder if becoming leaner - will be one of them?
I think Serena was pretty darn hot here. She certainly didn’t age well at all. Her game used to be so pretty too, but that also got painfully ugly in her later years.
It is so funny, sometimes when looking at the rallies, Hingis just somehow made every play slower than her... did she really put that much spin on the ball...?
I like the polish player, but what she has to realize is if she doesn't add some muscles to her guns she will always lose. That is a real pitty, because I do like her game. But she needs to add power to her groundstroke is the only way to beat the likes of Serena, Sharapova and Azarenka.
What an exhausting looking match! I think Serena shot herself in the foot by not playing her "A" game in the first set. You now can tell that she has learned her lesson. Go for your shots. Go big, or(in this match) go home.
Serena is the queen! Muscles 💪🏾 played no part in beating Martina-Great rallies and strategy! So glad Rena improved her serve after this era. 👸🏾 Much respect to Martina-too bad she loved the booger sugar! Queen Rena still reigns! Weak ppl scoff at muscles! Wtf do you think athletes do? She made this sport develop true athletes instead country club privilege.
What surprise me the most, is how people react to haters comment. Just relax! This peoples orgasm come when u argue about it. They re only joy in theyre life is to get u !!
Unfortunately or Fortunately it's the women's game now. They have to be powerful in their groundstrokes. She can keep the same playing style, but her groundstrokes need to do more damage she also needs to be able to control power.Wozniacki still very defensive as a player will never win a GS and Jankovic. What to say about her! The 3 best Serena, Sharapova and Azarenka are all winning from the baseline with powerful groundstrokes and a mix of other things.
People forget Hingis struggled to get back to back wins against power players. Beat a Williams, she faced another Williams or a Davenport or a Capriati. It sucked because she would have had many more slam wins. Still, one of the smartest players of all time. Such a pleasure to watch
What a match. Martina Hingis does not get enough credit for her talent... she was such a tough player. The only way to beat her is to overpower her.
maybe because quitting tennis at such a young age and remember that 1999 French open final. but now she's dominating the doubles with mirza. great cerebral game and court sense. 5 single slam titles and world no.1 ain't bad
+Ding Joson ... how about single ????
Serena Williams is not just a power player
+fix - not just, but main time. Compared to her aggressive power play I like Hingisova's intelligent and tricky style. She deserved to win, and both are the only ones who won 5 WTA-awards.

Gotta love Serena celebrating, and not immediately apologizing for, a net cord point she gets that momentarily saves the match for her. Such class...
robertorolfo oh shut the hell up. It’s not a requirement to apologize for a let. And this was ask 20 years ago, get over it.
Martina is simply a genius of tennis.
I remember being pissed having missed this match. one of my favorite matches of all times
This is my favorite Martina/Hingis match. Martina really showcased her all court strengths here and her ability to take the ball early and run her opponent all over the court. She was also hitting through her shots and getting nice depth to keep Serena from dominating. Such an entertaining match!
These girls knows how to create ridiculous angles. This is a great match and lots of versatility too.
and so much consistency!

The laaaassssst spectacular shot..the match point💓💓💓
🔥SWISS MISS🔥 is stunning.....superb match

hingisfan wasn’t she also having issues with her feet?
Partying and drugs took Martina down. She was banned for a year because of it. She was a natural on the court! Superb talent and skills.
Hingis was very fit her problem was she doesn't have the all round game that Serena has
The problem is called injuries.
This is by far the greatest match these two played against each other. It's only early 2001, but you can tell Hingis is already being out hit by Serena. It’s arguably Martina’s best win, so it makes sense to be one of Serena’s toughest losses

amazing footwork from Hingis on 4:13. series of little steps. that is hard to do.
Martina is so sporting. Smiling even when she loses a point. Great player and graceful lady.
One of the best matches ever. One of the rare occasions, where a player beats both Serena and Venus in the same tournament. It's a shame Hingis lost in the final of the 2001 Australian. the best weapon hingis used in this match was her parallel forehand, especially, when inverted: she used the whole match and was extremelly effective.
Serena is the only player in the world with a non-negative head2head against all top players. What she reached will never be reached again. Only Tennis player with a single and double Golden Slams. She's by far an incredible player. It's a shame to try to compare her to Hingis.
Great Match i looking for full Match may you have THX
it may well be the one time martina beat both sisters in this us open to get to the finals and lost the final to capriati but it was definitelh one of the best highlights of her career...
Nobody like Martina Hingis, she was the absolute best! Nobody could match her shots or her elegance in women's tennis, NOT a single player!
Hingis truly deserve to be in the Tennis Hall of Fame. She was a talented young tennis player. Admire her even more for putting fight against ball bashers like the Williams.
Wonderful match played between two of my faves; Martina and Serena, (19 Gs between them)
Come'on this is my first time to see hingis play on court. She is amazing and genius. She is an all-rounder player as well. I wish she still plays like williams sisters. Is she married already? She plays very great. There's a lot of amazing shots from her. I'm so surprised the way she plays.
Baby Serena was learning her techniques she was still a force to be reckoned with both of them great athletes
There's only a one year difference between the two in age. Serena was a brainless ball basher until 7 years later and was strategically deficient until then.
OMG look at how fast this serena was point starting at 2:08 look at all that court she covered just amazing!!!
MARTINA HINGIS is the most talented legend I've ever seen, I love her so much
UN CLARO EJEMPLO DE CLASE, ELEGANCIA, GARRA Y TALENTO, TODO ESO EN DOS PALABRAS MARTINA HINGIS!!
Qué recuerdos! Martina siempre HERMOSA!
I love how Hingis knows how to place and handle the balls off her opponent
i really enjoy watching Martina specially this game against Serena. we miss her so much!!! hope to see her again on court.
hingis really shouldn't have lost that final against jennifer...such a shame, she played amazingly throughout the whole tournament.
I loved the rivalry between the Williams and Hingis!!!
Contrary to what many people may think, it was quite evenly matched. Hingis was 6-7 against Serena and 11-10 versus Venus. They were even 2-2 in doubles 😂
love the look of hingis at 5:20 when she won the first set lol
What round was this? Semis ?
was this the final ?
No, it was the Quarterfinal. Hingis went on to beat Venus in the semis, then Hingis lost to Capriati in the final.
Forever Legend Hingis
this is show the reason why hingis still the best when she is in form
Quarter final match?
wasn`t this the first time someone beat venus and serena at the same grand slam.?
Alan Versace yes and it was just amazing. but sadly I think it was Capriati next.... =/ energy was zapped and the heat was torture.
Alan Versace Arantxa Sanchez Vicario defeated both Serena and Venus at the French Open around the late 1990's.
Joey Convery: Arantxa not in GS obviously, but in Sydney 1998. Also Steffi defeated both in Sydney 1999. Looks like Martina was the 1st one to beat both in a slam. After her Justine Henin 2007 and Kim Clisters 2009 in US open.
@@Alyssasrealm Also Pliskova at the USO 2016.
Bravo!!!
Femininity, grace and guile for the win. Well done Martina!
John Jones fuck does femininity have to do with tennis? You don’t say this with male players. Why say it to female players?
Wow. Serena was still in the improving stage during this time. But she surely does push hingis to the limit.
Yes her inside out forehand really gave Serena problems at this stage in their careers. This was a great match.
I believe Serena is a terrific player, she and other players, but i think specially her, take tennis to another level and made it more competitive.
A nice match!
The human backboard and one of the best at ball placement. If she had a stronger serve, who knows how many more grand slams she would have won.
Best women’s match ever.
Martina Hingis is a great champion!
Was serena OK in this match? She looked so strange. Great match though. Good fight from both. I think serena only got better with the years. She has so much experience now and thinks a lot more on the court than back in those early years
I LIKE THE CHANGING OF THE GUARD - LEVEL OF PLAY RISES TO NEW LEVEL - GET YOUR WEIGHT UP !
Tinsy-winsy Hingis couldn't hang; Davenport, Henin, and Clijsters saw success, however, and maybe Sharapova on the back end....
it was unfortunate Martina suffered a lot of injuries, she was awesome then, and would have been a dominant player like Stefi and Monica.
Gosh what a player 👏 and really beautiful lady 😍 xxxxxx martina......
11 players lead Graf. Serena only have 7 players leading her. ;-) This is the best score ever. Schnyder belongs to top players.
delightful! indeed, the only way to defeat her is to overpower her otherwise you can't untie yourself from the knot she will get you into.
I was in love with Martina
A lot of peeps were
i have respect for serena. she earned her titles. i think hingis should have stayed with her tennis and those two would have great rivals and great matches.
I don't. Serena has the benefit of the Y chromosome.
I don't disagree that Serena would beat Hingis. In fact, I don't think Hingis would have been successful in the post-Williams era at all. As you have indicated, she would have fared better in the Capriatti days.
I'm still amazed that Serena lost this match, but by year end (2001) Serena would beat Martina down a few times.
Playing here
interesting to watch serena play silently here..
yes,,,its odd that in some matches serena screams,,and some she is completely silent.
Marlon Simeon what happens when you become no 1... makes Hingis' antics look like child's play.
it was watchable
I wish Martina could have at least won this, just one last time, she deserved it more than Jennifer as Martina had tougher opponents en route to the finals. After this she already struggled with multiple injuries.
Era la época donde el juego preciso de la numero uno del mundo podía controlar a una muy dificil y peligrosa serena Williams .Mas adelante se hizo incontrolable y prácticamente domino el circuito alcanzando records de Grand slam
💖💖💖💖
This is not a knock - just an observation - how much Serena's body changed from her 20s to 30's, She definitely became much more muscular, I'm wondering if that effected her speed or flexibility at all? She seemed already very powerful when leaner. Just a question here. Venus, Steffi,'s body seemed to remain on the svelte side througout their career. I winder when her coach, Patrick said recently for her to win another GS - she will have to make substantial changes - I wonder if becoming leaner - will be one of them?
"Fantastische Spiel" :-)
So you're saying Azarenka is slow and unable to return well, too? Sharapova, slow, yes. Azarenka beaten by Serena is not a fact? I don't get it.
Martina's mother thought someone was pulling off her hat off at 20:10 to reveal that rough hair...lol
hahaha beauty against the beast
I think Serena was pretty darn hot here. She certainly didn’t age well at all. Her game used to be so pretty too, but that also got painfully ugly in her later years.
It is so funny, sometimes when looking at the rallies, Hingis just somehow made every play slower than her... did she really put that much spin on the ball...?
I like the polish player, but what she has to realize is if she doesn't add some muscles to her guns she will always lose. That is a real pitty, because I do like her game. But she needs to add power to her groundstroke is the only way to beat the likes of Serena, Sharapova and Azarenka.
damnYumm...Serena is hitting that ball like a baseball
If Hingis worked more on her strength she would have been the Agassi of the womens side.
"More athleticism"? Is that speed? Agility? Mental toughness?
Serena is the best ever but Hingis is the most talented. Too bad she never worked on adding power to her serve.
Leroy, is that you?
AMEN
respect for Serena Williams!!
WAIT!!!! how come Serena isn't screaming after every shot??????????? What happened?
People forget Hingis struggled to get back to back wins against power players. Beat a Williams, she faced another Williams or a Davenport or a Capriati. It sucked because she would have had many more slam wins. Still, one of the smartest players of all time. Such a pleasure to watch
serena was visibly sick during the match..i'm sorry, serena's best will walways be better than martina's ever was
