      ha ha ha... i once had a customer that was using the wrong power cables for a modular PSU (cable didn't match the PSU brand) ... and it had the 12v and 5v swapped.... and he kept frying the circuit board of the HDDs and was wondering if the HBA he bought from me was frying the HDDs... that took a while until figure out!

    This had me stumped for a while too. Pick'd up a side gig from a website to configure 2 servers, and the disks were already in the caddies. It took me a while to realize the disks weren't seating properly and not powering up... Good to share the knowledge...

    Another good tip, i think it happened to most of us that started in home servers, at least it happened to me on first drive install in my R710! Well, got if figured out fast but hey, no biggie! 😂😂. That SATAu marking got me fooled!

      Did this on my R815 server. I put the ssd's into the satau ports, and was like this isn't going to work. A quick search or 2 on google and I was ah ha! it is for an inter-poser that I won't be needing.
      Cheers!

    I think before you couldn't mix SAS and SATA drives together so you would need that converter from sata to sas in order for it to be compatible, but with newer firmware updates, it didn't matter any more.

      @@ArtofServer The extra holes are indeed intended for SATA interposer boards to convert to SAS, so you need to mount the drives a bit back. However I have never actually seen them in real life. I think nearline SAS came out which made the need for interposer boards irrelevant but the injection moulds where already done and these are super expensive to change and there is was no point anyway as they work just fine. I think the interposer boards where more intended for the MD3200 line of storage arrays than the servers, which use the same caddies. Certainly the MD3000 had SATA/SAS interposer boards but in Dell land that's the only interposer boards I have seen.

      @@jonathanbuzzard1376 yup. that's exactly my experience too.. i've only ever seen the interposers for MD1000/MD3000 and haven't seen them after that generation.

    It is for using an interposer on back of sata drive to make it appear as a sas drive when mixing sas and sata drives in an array.That's the short answer though there is a lot more to it.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  3 года назад +1

      That's what I mentioned. However, the last time I saw interposers was back when Dell sold the MD1000/3000 units using the older style caddies. I haven't seen interposers used in the 11th gen and newer.

  • @ishmaelmusgrave

    Huh, was looking at the SATA-u holes, and thinking: Interposer... But that should be SATA+I not U (I wonder why they choose such names). So better to use the SAS holes if one wants to engage the backplane/socket. A question popped up recently on L1T / Redditabout a disk shelf (DS4246?) which had the option of using interposers to link the single channel SATA drives to both the IOM's on the disk shelf

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  3 года назад +1

      Yes, indeed, interposers will allow SATA drives to work like SAS drives with the dual channel. I use to do that on Dell MD1000, which could be configured with a split backplane, but that only works if you have interposers on SATA drives to enable the 2nd data channel. Similarly, you would need that for redundancy too.

    Hey there, thanks for putting these out - very helpful! I have an R710 which is filled with 4TB drives, but the PERC 6/i can only see them as 2TB drives. Could I replace the RAID card with something else to get the full capacity, and if so, what would you recommend and does it need different cabling to the backplane?

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  4 года назад

      Your choices are H700 for RAID or H200 with IT mode firmware if you want a HBA. And yes, you'll need to change SAS cables. Check out my R710 series for details.

    I'm just finding info on your channel.. good info, you repeat a whole lot...
    These are for a big load of reasons for this and I'll scan over them.
    The interposer (on hp939) connects and converts the data signal.
    SAS uses what we call full duplex SATA uses half duplex
    That's double of single speeds.
    The issues arise, the controller and EMM can "fault" where there is no second signal, each of the separately.
    The interposers switch a SATA half to full. This then allows the controller to work and receive the working as it should signal to and form the drive, and the emm won't flag up, hey broken drive only half working.
    While dell sold SAS and SATA in the earlier model they actually didn't work nor support sas by the time they rolled out.
    The interposer was a stop Gap, a mechanical fix for the issue and there was later the firmware updates to allow both drives later than 2tb and SATA drives..
    While you can update firmware, and while you can directly plug in a SATA by screwing into the SAS holes so it meets in some of the older system they won't show up at all. (No lights) no showing up in software.. nothing.
    The trays differ, so you can buy the tray. Or you can remove the interposer metal clip so it will fit the board and backplane. (It does fit without removing it, just do remove it)
    All the trays are the same (near same) and they ordered so many to be made they seem to be floating around with the old tech standards...
