Aside from the portraits and one particular character change (we all know which one) I think they did a wonderful job with the remake to accommodate both old and new as well as casual and veteran players. It's too bad Atlus still refuses to offer the option to choose between English and Japanese audio and asks additional money for things like a harder difficulty or the old portraits (which are implemented really poorly to boot).
It's 2018 the only way to attract the newcomer were to moefied everything. I really wish this trend would stop myself but man Japan and their moe troupe bubbly character craze have not switch style yet. Fuck Moe
After playing the new version for a while I really love the new art for all the characters, some of the old art is really bad in comparison. I'm excited to see how Nemesia fits into the story.
not sure if you guys cares but if you're bored like me atm you can stream all of the new movies on instaflixxer. Have been watching with my brother lately xD
I prefer this one, since he shows a better range of emotions with a more dynamic portrait system. Never been a fan of the previous style, reminds me too much of how Tactics Ogre does it, which suffered from the same problem of faces rarely changing during the entire course of the game.
I agree with you, the 3DS was an excellent system with truly magnificent games available. I’m currently playing through Perfect Chronology for the first time and loving it!
The old portrait art looked better in some cases. It had a lot more detail. The new portrait art looks comparable to new vs old anime. (computer drawn vs hand drawn)
wow, these additions and changes seem so well thought out, like they actually thought about what problems the old one had and how to fix them I had been thinking of trying to find a used DS copy for a few years, but when I found out Perfect Chronology was on sale for black friday, I just jumped to get it I didn't realize the voice acting had been freshly added until I booted up my game just now, but that alone pretty much makes it worth it for me over the old version because I love voice acting and so far it seems really good
Playing Perfect Chronology brings back so many memories of the original. I LOVE the character redesigns for Raynie, Aht, and even Eruca and the quality of life changes really add a level of polish the original lacked
I received this version for Christmas and I’m loving it! I had played the original on DS but really feel that this is the best way to experience the game! My only major gripe is that while I like almost all the new character art, I prefer Raynie’s original portrait art to the new one. Other than that all the extra content and quality-of-life improvements are great! I’m really happy Atlus did this. I also receive SMT: Strange Journey Redux”, but haven’t put enough time into it yet to see if I prefer it to the original. Either way, I’m so glad Atlus gave both of these great games a second chance and is how re-releases should be done.
I feel like they really overhauled the script from the original. Not as many characters saying redundant lines like: "As you well may know...." Hated that kinda stuff.
I purchased the original DS version at launch, and sadly never got around to playing it. I picked up Perfect Chronology yesterday, this will be the version I end up playing.
One of my closest friends sold me on it back when it came out for the DS comparing it to Chrono Trigger, that was all he had to say! XD Then another good friend told me that if this game had come out on the SNES, it would have been the type of game I would have been hyper nostalgic for. Very much looking forward to it!

JRPG Central Thanks for responding to both my comments, I will respond back to this comment for both. :) Your video was great and very helpful. I never played any of the Persona games. The Friendly Mode reminded me of "Sword of Mana" for the GBA. I want to dive into "Radiant Historia: A Perfect Chronology", but I wanted to still play some "Xenoblade Chronicles 3D". The reason I got "Radiant Historia: A Perfect Chronology" was because Game Informer created 25 of the best DS games of all time and "Radiant Historia" was on it. So, like I said in my other comment I was planning on getting it for the DS and once I heard about the 3DS version, i Was like I will wait for that version. It's like the DS version is the standard DVD and the 3DS is the blu-ray version with all the extras. Thanks again.
So Friendly Mode eliminates the whole battle system? I have never come across a RPG like this before. I am really looking forward to playing this game. I never obtained a copy for my DS and I wanted to, but when I heard they announced a version for the 3DS I decided to wait for the that version to get released.
TANKTREAD there are some battles that are important to the story that you *have* to fight in, but yeah almost all of the random encounters you can avoid but still get experience for.
Never played the original this video gave me a lot of great information that I never can get from reviewers of the game and now Im really interested in it so Im gonna buy this game. great video thanks!
Thanks for illuminating me. I just did a review a few minutes ago of the 3DS version, not having played the original, and it helps me appreciate just how much love the developers had for the DS version, and how this may be an even better port than the Zelda remakes on 3DS and Wii U. Again, as one who never played the DS version, I thank you for informing me.
One of my favorite handheld games, ever. I'm glad they did a remake with newer features. I have both versions. However, I truly question why they remade this on the 3DS and not the Switch. I'd have preferred the option to play on a bigger screen. DS to 3DS doesn't seem like the biggest jump, especially when one can play DS games on a 3DS.
FreeRPGer I do wish it was on switch. It was apparently originally being developed for the Vita and was going to be a proper remake, but they moved development to the 3DS once it was clear the Vita was a commercial flop.
I haven't liked the New portraits ( principally because of Marcus and that captain friend of stocke ) and the way the chars receive total exp even if they fall , I think it would be better if the system give just 50% of exp to they or something like that .
I was wondering whether I should pick DS original and play it on my NN2DS XL or buy the remake and buy the DLC with old portraits. I think I go with the remake. Thank you, JRPG Central!
A then I realized that I cannot, or I will but spend much much more money. While a used DS original is 2/3 of the price of the remake... Decisions decisions.
I'm actually kind of impressed. I thought this was just a port with a small extra story and voice acting, which honestly would have been enough. But these quality of life additions can go a long way to make the game much more enjoyable. Also the graphics look more 3D than the DS version, which looked more pixelated. Personally I like both graphics styles, but I'm just glad to see that it is not just a lazy port. Of course this is Atlus so I should have known it would be a job well done.
Excellent video and overall informative on both versions of the game! i cant wait to dive into this one! just got it in the mail the other day, but i got a couple rpgs on the go lol one being Tokyo Xanadu and the other Ys Memories Of Celceta so maybe ill have to get a third on the go ha ha! i was gonna cover this game at some point on my channel as well, because the original was awesome! Cheers!
I love this game, I play it on DS years ago, I found Raynie's voice actress is ayane sakura in japanese version, she is my favourite, I'm kinda sad I can't listen to her voice in this game 😹
I never really liked these types of games but then my 3ds downloaded the demo and now i'm hooked. Does anyone know where I get the sword skills to get passed the guards? I know I have to talk to Kiel but IDK where or when in the timeline.
Can't wait for my copy. Loved the original. I was going to skip, but after playing the demo I pre ordered right away. It got my so nostalgic, I honestly forgot how much I loved this game.
The game looks Intriguing as I'm about to start it today, but I will say the music for your outro remind me of I think the credit song from trails of cold steel 2 xD
Does anyone know if it is possible to switch from "normal" to "friendly" mode during the game? Or do you have to decide in the beginning and stick with that mode?
Blueblade13 I just checked and both enemy damage and health are lowered pretty substantially. Enemies that would die in 3 hits die in 2 and the damage they dish out is muuuch lower. Almost negligible.
I think this version somewhat replaced the older version. A lot of improvements in gameplay. The additional story pieces are ok but doesn't take away too much of the original story of you don't care about the new stuff. Not included in the list is the Time Vault, which is another place to grind and get neat items. Finally, the new game plus epilogue area. One last shot area to go through, but the boss is so hard, not even at max level in normal was enough. I could only beat him on Friendly mode, but even then, he's too easy. I'm dreading to see how much grinding I need to beat him.
I believe it's a "once chosen you can't change it" sort of thing. Or you can change it one way but once you do you can't change it back. Either way, I'm sure you can't do it at will.
It's a shame atlus have the scalper situation they do (probably won't be as bad as Mario 3d all stars, but still), but for what it's worth, this game seems like it's extremely different from persona and SMT, but I'm looking forward to checking out this expanded version (with my ocd for most games, I like to wait till the complete version is out lol)
I was wondering, once I complete the DEMO and begin to actual play the physical game, can I delete the DEMO from my SD Card? Will it affect all the bonuses that I received from playing the DEMO to be transferred to the actual game? If so or if not, does that go for every game DEMO, like "The Alliance Alive" as well?
Once you start the full game it will import your save from the Demo. Once it does that you are free to delete the Demo. I'm not positive, but I'm sure Alliance Alive works the same way.
Thanks for the very speedy response. I really appreciate it. I am currently playing the DEMO and just trying to finish it up(25 chances to play left), it's a long DEMO. I want to start playing the REAL game. :)
The awesome thing about the Demo is it’s basically the complete full game. It allows you to play the first chapter of each timeline before it cuts you off, but otherwise it’s the full thing. All the bonuses you get are right at the beginning too so if you have the full game I say go ahead and slap it in and continue your save on it!
Well, I guess I will finish up the DEMO before I play the retail copy(which I have ready to go, still sealed). I am enjoying the game. I just hope I finish the remaining chances of playing the DEMO. I really don't play DEMOs(even if I do, I never had a "limited" amount of chances to play), so if I run out of remaining chances will I be "punished" somehow? I want to actually start "grinding". Love being over powering in RPGs.
Quick question. I have leveled up to 20 but I am not done with the DEMO, can I stop and then start up on the ACTUAL game now(because I want to continue to level up)or do I have to finish the DEMO completely?(I do have the Medibranch, Health Fruit, Mana Fruit and Celestial Dew in my inventory, which are the FREE items you get with the DEMO I believe). Also, what do you mean the DEMO is the basically the full game?
If you like Chrono Trigger, then you will like Radiant Historia. I played the shit out of this game recently lol. It can get insanely frustrating when you don't know where to go. Sometimes the hints they give you is straight garbage, but other than that this game is great! I will also have to agree that the new and old are style is rather conflicting. Raine looked gorgeous in the older art style. :P
Just discovered this game on eshop and love it! I don't even really like jrpgs. My biggest issue is that getting a preemptive strike is pretty finicky.
Ah! This game was one of the few jrpg that i managed to finish in a few sit-through because of the interesting story n gameplay in general. I'm excited to see it being remade n improved for 3ds. I also liked Raynie's old art more because she looked mature there, but then listening to her new voice, I think the current art fits better. I love the voices so far. Marco's voice is cute. I'm still crushing on Stocke so far. There was one odd moment when the voice acting had a little bit of a chuckling sound but the dialog mentioned how Stocke never smiled. So... That was a miss for me, unless people can really chuckle without smiling. (nitpicking!) Anyway, I'm excited to buy this game..... When it's on sale? Lol. I promised myself not to buy another RPG until I finished at least one of my games. Thanks for making the difference easy to spot. I'm especially curious about the 3rd timeline. Maybe I'll opt for the old school art? Meh..
Michelle Sudarsono Take it from me. Yes, you can chuckle without smiling. It just looks really weird, so I try to break out a small grin if anything else to make it seem more natural.
I love the new and old art all the same. I do wish that Rainy's art was just a tad bit closer to her original art. It's not that different and I still like the new one but I just wish it gave me the same impression that the original art did. Some of the dialogue in perfect chronology is slightly different, but besides that I love it. Also I wish Eruca's hair was short like in the original. I mean i like it long to but I prefer that she be short haired because thats how she was originally. But anyways its no big deal. The game is really fun and awsome. All the special art is so cool! I found perfect chronology on the eshop and downloaded it after playing the demo. I have to say this is one of my favorite games. I love it as much as I love fire emblem and tales of games. When I found out that there was an original I had to buy it to. I love the old and new game. Both have flaws but they are awsome story wise!
Is a good porting, it have some nice Features, but the new art just don't look fine to me, alongside with the new Eruca look. I'm good with the "standard" DS version.
Hi there, fellow youtube gaming channel here. I played a bit of the original and just started with this one. The game is absolutely stunning! Thanks for this detailed video. I'm glad the port brought all these new features in. Isn't the voice work awesome?
Friendly Mode should be implemented in all classic jrpgs because it is a great time saver for very busy people. In my opinion, should be number one on this list. Great video, thanks. I finished this game years ago on the DS bty, Epic.
I bought it today, i never played the Original (But always wanted to play it) because it was never released in Europe/Germany. First impression: love the Combat system, Story and Music, but dislike the some of the Voice acting, its not bad but some Characters have the wrong Voice in my opinion, but its better than no Voice Acting i guess.
They fixed every problem that the original had which is awesome, but it REALLY sucks that Atlus had to get scummy and reduce the EXP/gold you get in battle AND nerf a lot of the equipment in the game to push people to buy the grinding DLC. That alone makes this a worse version of the game, unfortunately. Having to buy the original portraits is also terrible.

I agree. He looked very distinct in his original art. He looks a tad bit generic this time around.
I don't know. I prefer his new portrait. In the original he looked like a gloomy guy. Rather unfit for a SI officer. Plus I'm tired of gloomy guys.

Sometimes the hints they give you is straight garbage, but other than that this game is great! I will also have to agree that the new and old are style is rather conflicting. Raine looked gorgeous in the older art style. :P
First timer so I don't mind 31$ for this one with all the improvements. I might even get the dlc for the portrait art.
So, portrait art is behind a paywall?
Yes. Very unfortunate.
(nitpicking!)
Anyway, I'm excited to buy this game..... When it's on sale? Lol. I promised myself not to buy another RPG until I finished at least one of my games.
Thanks for making the difference easy to spot. I'm especially curious about the 3rd timeline. Maybe I'll opt for the old school art? Meh..

Take it from me.
Great video
Thank you!
what about the bad changes like less money earned after battles?
..was thinking of playing this game..edit: will play 😁 subbed also 😉
i'm sad i cancelled my preorder, but i got monster hunter world AND star ocean second evolution instead so i'd say i'll be ok for now lol
There's too much to play dude.💀 #firstworldproblems I know but it's so hard to keeping up with them all.
Star ocean 2 for what system?
for PSP
One word ..... deadly brrrr
Smashin Bros Games Thank you for watching it! And yes it is! It could have very easily been bad but so far I’m impressed.
Friendly mode? Whos gonna play this game on friendly mode?
Calvin Matthews me bc baby LOL
It might help if you need to grind
I just want to enjoy the story that's why im playing it in friendly mode. And honestly im feeling quite bad for doing it
I would.
Me.
Friendly Mode should be implemented in all classic jrpgs because it is a great time saver for very busy people. In my opinion, should be number one on this list. Great video, thanks. I finished this game years ago on the DS bty, Epic.
Dear god those portraits are hideous. What were they thinking? Upscaled versions of the originals would have been infinitely better.
i prefer the new portrait art
I bought it today, i never played the Original (But always wanted to play it) because it was never released in Europe/Germany. First impression: love the Combat system, Story and Music, but dislike the some of the Voice acting, its not bad but some Characters have the wrong Voice in my opinion, but its better than no Voice Acting i guess.
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Where the fuck is that anime scene?
If I remember correctly that's in the opening movie.
You are wrong about that. mine is an undub version and there is yes a japanese dialogue in it. :) Downloaded it at ziperto. xD
Arthur Gallardo Obviously if you download an altered version of the game, you could get Japanese voices.
That's correct. Good job with the video by the way. Forgot to give you kudos earlier. xD
gigidi!
😏
Heiss is sus
Raynie looks much better in Perfect Chronology imo
To each their own! I felt like the new art didn’t match her original character very well. Though it did fit the voice acting for her.
