Thanks Bentley. We need more testing like this in the hobby. It would be great to see Aquarium Mythbusters.

Can't quite go that in-depth, but certainly fun to play around!

Really looking forward to you having more time to do comparison tests for products. Interesting to see your results

I am so happy you're measuring sound. Quite is what I personally look for.
I have not used either of them, but I've been curious about the Tetra Whisper for some time.
I've just been using the "Hi Pumps" 1.5 watt (the one which is resold under something like 15 Asian knock-off names on Amazon) due to the lack of noise. (my tank sits on my desk and my sump is under my desk, quite is a must for me).
But I would love to upgrade to a large unit. Thank you for the head-to-head with measurements.

I seriously enjoy when you do testing videos! I love that you give an unbiased presentation of data. Thanks again for all you do for the hobby!

Bentley I refer a lot of people to your Channel for tests you have done. I used to do system testing as well as design using both air and natural gas from the wellhead when I was working in the oil patch. I appreciate what you do and honestly a sensible test like what you do, always makes sense to me. The KISS principle is great for the average person who is interested in the test for themselves.
What I am looking for is a good standby battery pump. I may run it once a month to keep it worn in, but it will not be my primary pump. Currently the only sound my primary pump makes is the bubbles, no pump noise. I did a dumb thing a few months ago that put one of my pumps underwater, pumping water for an hour before I got to it. Still running flawlessly.
I want the secondary pump to take over when the power goes out. I'll have to go turn them on but oh well.
I use whatever Aquarium Co-op products I can get up here, because anything that Cory puts his business name on is something I like to use, there is a Mom and Pop shop here that puts it's name on some of their products so I use them. Eventually Cory will be doing business up here and I can get more product.
I look forward to your test results as usual. Take care down there, I appreciate the work you do to keep your followers informed!

COOL .. yes it's obvious your a tester .. I love the phone db. meter. I'm a Photographer, Extra Class armature radio operator, Computer Builder & Programmer etc. etc. my brother is a mechanical engineer & my nephew builds Electron Microscopes for a living .. so I really get it .. I often refer to my aquarium as my biology experiment .. I was just curious about the noise comparison. you really got into this .. lol .. rock on

Thanks Bentley. My Tetra Whisper basically roared out of the box, but it was nothing a Phillips screwdriver couldn't take care of.

Do you think the dual outlet model would be enough to power 2 sponge filters on a 110? Thanks

My primary concern for larger tanks like that is that in my experience, the aquarium co-op pump is not pushing as much air as some of the other pumps at depth. I think it's certainly worth giving it a try as the battery backup feature is really handy, but you should be able to tell visually if it's enough air. This also depends on how much stock you're going to put into that aquarium, if it's more likely stocked then yeah you should be fine.

I really appreciate the feedback I have purchased two of these pumps and really do like the lack of noise level and the power for the size. The tetra whisper is much louder on a similar flat surface in my opinion. Are you going to test if a pump can be split and still run effectively for two tanks? Im

i like this product, however, from a reef keeping hobby standpoint, a venue they can improve upon is to add an option to only run when the power cuts out.

I would like to know the limits of the pumps in terms of spliters. I was looking for a duel outlet that can be split into 4. Or a single outlet into 3 etc.

keep the air pump above the tank and eliminate the check valve for this test. 2 check valves could vary in restriction

I like my co-op air pump better than my tetra. I’m slowly replacing my tetras with the co-op’s.

The test was inaccurate. Your meter picked up sound from the outflow of air. rather than just vibrations. My tetra whisper was quite when I added the airline to the output. Would have been nice to see a proper test where the pump is being used in normal conditions.

    What excess plant matter?

  • @Jaker788

As far as I understand with inline battery power systems, this so called "float charging" isn't bad if it's not actually overcharging the battery but only supplying as much power as is being drawn through the battery. Float charging on lead acid is keeping an unloaded battery at 2.35vpc typically, about 0.03v below gassing voltage. But I wouldn't call what the air pump is doing a float charge exactly. This doesn't count as cycling the battery even and a lot of UPS systems even lithium ones do this.
Now the part where it shuts off the charging circuit because of too much load is a problem. You don't want unintentional cycling.

Off topic I know but,you are the man to ask! Yesterday I was at my LFS and they had a plant I have wanted for years a Crinum Calamistratum so one came home with me! I put it in a terracotta pot with fine gravel and some root tabs about half the onion part in the gravel ( it was bare root) it’s in a twenty gallon high with a stingray light. Every thing else in the tank driftwood with Anubias and rock with Anubias is made to be taken out and place in a bucket while I catch the super red bristle nose fry ( grow out tank) sponge filter bare bottom tank. I plan on just moving the pot around gently to catch fry. Should this tank work for this tank? Any tips on keeping this plant? I have been after this plant for a long time hard to come by in my area, some people already are after babies from it.Thank you for any help very excited to finally get one only a couple came in and since this store gets there super reds from me I got to cherry pick the one I wanted!😁

Should work. The plant is pretty easy, medium light (I'd say you're there) and nutrients at the roots, then just patience. It's a slow grower, so give it time.

Were both pumps brand new when you started the experiment? Age of the diaphragm may influence its power. Thanks Fred O
