When people talk about "The last 5%" of a build, this is the kind of thing they're talking about. A million small jobs that no one talks about or wants to do, because it's not the exciting part. It's not revealing new wheels, it's not the dyno sessions, or revealing the brand new paint job. It's welding plastic, finding a good place to tuck wires you don't want to see, getting the horn to work, replacing fasteners, pulling the interior apart because you now need to hide those wires for the speakers you talked about so excitedly and mocked up a year ago but never connected knowing the wires would get in the way, and didn't have the loom for yet anyways, fixing and measuring panel gaps from the 5 parts cars' panels you've got on there now, and having to make adjustments to the carpet because you need to make provisions for a centre console out of some other car because I want cupholders, dammit!
Uptick the female percentage there as I'm looking to repair my Mitsubishi Eclipse dash cracks. I was teased by my guy friend that when my new front struts came in for replacement that I should get a life. My 4 new Continental DWS tires last mo. are awesome too! And I'm a girly girl who yes, drives a stick still. This, was fun to watch at 2:21am during COVID. Thank you for the links in your description!
8:45 The best little tip I ever learned for plastic welding a bumper repair, is to cut some plastic off the bumper from a place you won't see, and use that for your filler. That way it guarantees it will be a chemical match and the correct hardness.
That generation of Celicas had this problem. In 1984 I bought a 1978 (same basic body) Celica for my son and daughter to take to college (cheaper than airfare, Maryland to Wisconsin) I looked at a half dozen Celicas and every one had this problem. I also had a 1980 Celica and it did not have the problem. I used the cap method. Over the years between my wife and me, I had 10 Celicas. BTW in the US they are called CELL i ka. Sorry they stopped making them. All mine were 5 speed manuals. I had to give up on them when a shoulder injury and surgery prevented me from two handed driving until I had six months of physical therapy. I still drive Toyotas.
Out of all my channels I watch this video is one of my favorites!! Very detailed and you make it seemed so easy!! Well worth the $1200 savings doing it yourself!
Dave's getting a little Looney during this quarantine time 😅 One of your funniest videos in a while. Loved it. Surprised that you couldn't find a aftermarket dash for a decent price though
Ahhh Dave.. I miss doing videos for my celica. I really miss working on it.. Kinda want to do another one hahahaha! Your dash came out great! I used the expanda foam and no problems as yet. the suede over the top is holding up well and no deformation yet.
Great to hear your dash is holding up well so far! I didn’t realize you used the expanding foam method. Good to know I wasn’t completely nuts thinking that could work 👍🏼
I saw a photo recently a photo of a cast iron engine block that was painted in VHT engine enamel and the colour was "cast iron silver". it looked really good, check it out.
Looks great Dave. I’ll have to say I was slightly disappointed at the total lack of breakdancing in this video. When you transitioned to your home garage my outlook improved, the tantalizing possibility of a large piece of cardboard taped to the floor of a spare garage stall lifting my spirits. Alas, it was not meant to be. I’ll look forward to your next video, and the chance we will get to see DP throw down a windmill or an air flare in some well worn parachute pants with zippers stretched to the breaking point.
That looks like a lot better quality dash cap than the one I bought in like 2006 from eBay. Had a 1986 McLaren Capri with a ratted out dash and the cap wasn't exactly a perfect fit to say the least. Lll
Hi 3% ladies here... my husband is restoring his 75 Celica... I am always excited to see new videos. Cant wait to get into that thing once its driveable! He is using acrylic to strengthen his center console. Any tips? What do you guys suggest? Anyone have some parts? Looking for fathers day gifts lol
Hey Dave nice work Something interesting for you to look at. CT's garage about 35 seconds in on his vapour blasting episode. I herd this and was like hmm I know that sound Wonder if the dash fits back in the car now ??
I remember back in the day when nothing but Puerto Ricans drove these cars and hook them up back in the days now you only see a couple of them around tucked away and them Puerto Ricans are not giving them up for nothing lol. But now everybody wants to own them and tune them up we've been doing this jdm tuning cars for years lol
Unless you are using a cap, I know that a lot of people recommend fiberglass to avoid the cracks to reappear after the dash has been sitting in the sun again, but I've never heard the plastic welding being recommended before, interesting, I hope it holds up
Great video, very informative! What's the material of that strap you glued to the back of the dashboard with the PL adhesive please? Is that metal? I might have to do something similar to mine and I'm not sure there is anything like that, so I'll have to make my own strap lol. Thanks!
That is unusual to see a dash pad in that bad of condition for Canada, down in the southern states you see that all the time because of the high heat and UV exposure. On my 89 Supra when my dad purchased it 6 years ago the dash pad was in real bad shape, he found one in Organ at a salvage yard for $180 US and about $90 us for shipping.

On youtube camera from 10 feet away you don't see any of that. So they all seemingly have "perfect" cars, except you.
Sounds like you've been there. Couldn't have said it better myself!
This is also so true for software development.
Really enjoying the Celica video, even these "small" jobs because they really help complete a build
I am viewing this 4 years after the fact this is a really good video. Thanks. I'm about to do the same process on the dash pad for my 1973 challenger.
I was waiting for some time lapse dad dancing. Found it at 14:12! Thanks Dave, I can copy your moves and show them off to my 5 year old here at home.
You're welcome, but I want to see some video of your dance moves :P

I used the polyvance system on my VW bus dash that was destroyed. It came out looking new!
Jeez to think we're comparing this to a $1200 fix.. I'd take this any day! Looks good!

Great idea! We’ll have to try that 👍🏼
Great sense of humor. The 2 video inserts were perfect. So too the centerfold look.
Thanks for Plastic weld kit info on eBay. Just bought mine to repair my 83' Celica GT.
I'm loving all the content you guys are putting out! Can't wait for you guys to get together again.
That high expansion foam video was AWESOME!!!!!!
"My kids are inside trying to burn the house down" - Every parent after a week of shutdowns
I was mentioning street banditos in your videos along time ago and so happy to here of a link up 👏🏽 awesome work as ever
Lol, the plastic welding reminds me of when I fixed some fairings on my motorcycle by melting zip tie ends into the cracks with a soldering iron.
I’ve been doing that for years. Works beautifully.
Looks great, that plastic welding really worked out well. Can't wait for some more progress.

Aha I see Connie is closer to my first Celica (a 74) not the 78 I bought for my kids for college.
Your editing, memes, fooling around and dancing are the best! Every SA video should be like this one! Lol!
The bob ross of plastic welding.
Love the dance interlude! And hello from the 3%!
Out of all my channels I watch this video is one of my favorites!! Very detailed and you make it seemed so easy!! Well worth the $1200 savings doing it yourself!
Shout out to Devin at Uneek Upholstery, he reupholstered my cafe racer seat and did an exceptional job!
Dual tape player boom box.... nice.
Nice that i found this! I have 2 Celicas, a 89 and 03. And i have a 81 1.8 wagon
fantastic idea and i just bought a plastic weld kit
thank you for the awesome video
Thanks. I'm gonna remove the dash on my 95 eclipse gsx. Has like a 2 foot gash in it. Gonna try this before I resort to buying a new dash
Inspired me to pull my dash cap off and fix it the right way thanks!
Great stuff guys. *Congrats!*
Thanks for getting us some Celica videos up during this time in the world when we are stuck at home.
Awesome job man, looks like new and you saved 1200! More money for other parts and tequila! Cheers!
14:11 - When Pete isn't around to keep Dave in check
Good on you for giving it a go looks awesome man
Dave's editing in those little clips never disappoints.
Dave's getting a little Looney during this quarantine time 😅

They make 2 part epoxy foam now. A lot stronger and more flexible
Awesome, thanks! I will have to do the same thing to my 75 Civic.
I saw a photo recently a photo of a cast iron engine block that was painted in VHT engine enamel and the colour was "cast iron silver". it looked really good, check it out.
Cool, thanks, will check that out!
Never thought of using a plastic welder for this. I go get a Bondo fiberglass resin and mesh tape. Hard as a brick, but it is strong.
Was thinking, Dave is a YT'er you'd like to have a beer or case with. Then he breaks out the dance moves...
I've been looking for a video like this for a while thanks
You guys located in Canada? Because I swear, every good car guy/diy channel is in Canada. Every, single, one.
Lol I will bust out the worm and see about some MC Hammer moves next time 😂
This is good honest work.
14:40 Lol! Spring clamps, c-clamps, tonneau cover clamp, clamp on wrench. Woodworkers problem of 'you can never have enough clamps'
Hah! Your clamp knowledge is extensive! 😆
That looks like a lot better quality dash cap than the one I bought in like 2006 from eBay. Had a 1986 McLaren Capri with a ratted out dash and the cap wasn't exactly a perfect fit to say the least. Lll
Next vlog: DP's kids burning the house down.
If I was your wife I'd be more concerned about the dancing than the beach towel 😄

DP repair the oe dash and bond the the plastic dash cap to it, after which you can either flock it or suede wrapit
Nice shirt! From my homies at ShaDynasty
That’s a great job👍
👍🏻 for the danse moves... lol
Great work!
Just did some por15 my self
Did you get any on your skin? 😆
Speed Academy yup and the floor which is where it is staying 😜
12:10 Dave puts on his smooth jazz radio voice. Instant panty dropper!
I remember the instructions of those dash covers say not to go overboard on adhesive. It needs to be able to flex.
Hey Dave nice work

Wonder if the dash fits back in the car now ??
One of the 3% Celica ladies here!
Wan't wait to see this. I'll be surprised if it works.
sweet shirt DP!
i just gotta know which video that was with the expanding foam erupting out of the barrel...
zeroswings2 it’s on David Dobrik’s channel.

Nice work!
Maybe some carbon fiber fenders and rear ducktail spoiler possibly?
Where did yall get the music on this one? Some funky glitch hop, sounds nice!
All our music is from artlist.io (royalty free music service).

I like how he said Celica both ways in the first 5 seconds ;P
Unless you are using a cap, I know that a lot of people recommend fiberglass to avoid the cracks to reappear after the dash has been sitting in the sun again, but I've never heard the plastic welding being recommended before, interesting, I hope it holds up
Håvard Johansen anddd hes using a cap

Can somebody please explain the Cee-LEAK-ah ?? Thanks for the helpful video.
3:23 what video is that from?
I still have my SCC, Modified in plastic covers... Hey Dave you interested? Ive got two bins full.

Cabin fever appears to be setting in...

would love to see what you could do to make a track ready less desirable late 80's car..... see if you can make it cool
You don't need to look at magazines anymore, Dave. There's the internet *smirk*
May also help to drill the end of the crack so it doesnt continue cracking down the road.
Nice!! Looks great... :-)
what is this video from 3:23 ?
For real What Video is That!?
Thanks for this. Gotta do the same on my 78 corolla coupe. So far I've just put a carpet mat over the crack.
A shout out to the 3% Ladies in Tha House!
Where did you get the ShadyNasty shirt???
speedhero.myshopify.com/collections/all/products/shadynasty-70s-forever-t-shirt

Same music that Driftworks uses in their vlogs :D
