Oh my God, again, this makes so much sense! I developed patellofemoral syndrome (spelling?!) after only 2 years of continuous skating. It’s getting a bit better as I become more advanced but these are basics that nobody EVER told me. Thank you so much, this just might save my knee from further knee pain and surgery!
It's so great and so unusual for anyone to go into such detail about knee bend. I'm a fan of the correct knee bend as posed to the indiscriminate "bend your knee" command given the world over in skates lasses. You use your 3 position system which is good and I agree with. I have something similar in my teaching and my "correct" knee bend is like your second position, where the knee cap falls just over the toe of the foot (but not further like your position 3). You also correctly identify the common problem of leaning forwards from the body and what challenges that then creates.... The flow in skating I believe comes from successfully navigating the changes in knee bend during and between each step, whether its dance of freestyle (I call this in my teaching the "down up down"). Thanks for sharing. It was like being inside my head...... all skate geeks unite!
Wow, I love how technical you are! Thank you so much for creating this video and putting this information out there. I've been experiencing knee aches/fatigue after skating and will keep relaxed knees in mind during my next skate session!
Yup, working on a book! Postponed the publication, because of ongoing changes, due to building a new facility for training. But getting back soon to finish volume 1.😉
Great video. I'm a newish skater. The advice I received was bend knees and squat when I'm unsteady. I find that this causes foot pain and shin pain. I wasn't sure what exactly was causing this pain until seeing your video and it makes sense as I'm often leaning forward when I bend my knees far. Many tutorials don't really explain these things very well. Thank you. Im looking forward to your future technical videos.
This is such an important topic. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. (FWIW, I have developed problems with my medial collateral ligament in my right leg, and I'm trying to improve my technique so that the injury recovers properly and I can carry on skating. I'm an older skater, so am very keen to hear about how I can protect myself from injury while doing what I love - joints that are 50+ years old behave very differently to joints that are 20 or 30 years old!)
This was great! Also, I love those blue skates so much!! Thank you, BFunk✌🏽 Edit: I'm in the process of getting plates that fit my ball to heel pitch, so I'm really excited to see your video on that and how to mount them!
i would love to learn what you did with your plates! im nervous about setting it up wrong but definitely want to get the proper size and placement to alleviate knee pain! my current plates are not lined up with the ball/heel of my foot.
Thank you Brian for this useful information. One thing I noticed when stating is that I usually have pain on my adductor muscles, inner thigh joint. it started happening after I started doing dribbles and transitions. I do stretch almost everyday but it's not helping that much. Any insight on this?
Aah yes. The notorious adductors! Sometimes they take over when the glutes are not strong enough or aren't engaged enough, and also with leaning forward too much. Then the adductors can get overloaded as well. Put in some extra rest, and avoid trigger movements for at least three weeks. In the meanwhile, wallsits and different variations of lunges will get you back on track!
Hi Brian and thank you for this. Unfortunate for me I have knee issues because when I started skating 3 years ago bending my knees was one of the 1st lessons I learned in order to. Stay balanced 😩 now my rt knee is constantly in pain which is the worst thing for this passion. You mentioned plate placement would help. Do you mind sharing more info. Thanks again!
Hi! So sorry to hear about your knee issues. I am currently working on material that will dig in and explain these issues. A shorter plate prevents you from leaning forward and allows you to stand up straight. Stay tuned for more om this and don't give up!
I have a question!!? My skating is improving ( thanks to you)!!! My thing is dance ...so I'm gonna buy new skates and would love you to advice me!!my shie size is 11 us .what would be the right plate size for my boots and which degree 10 or 45 ?? Thanks alot
Well, I must have grown 2 inches..... aye yia yia... I straightened the knee and things got much better -- including my upper body .... now I'm far more vertical.... felt lined up Took my hour practice time ( outside basketball court) and really focused on imprinting the correction & notice where the core strength is....hard to notice position w/out mirrors - seemed to make an immediate difference - cause my knees are not whining one bit
If you can't swim, you can't play waterpolo. Same goes for roller skating. Proper basic roller skating skills are essential, before going into and dedicating yourself to any differentiated style or sports on roller skates. Each differentiation has its own specifics, when it comes to choice of gear and material. But the fundamentals don't change.

One of my biggest faux pas in skating is leaning forward too much. Thank you for this! Really!!
Great info, thankyou, will be more aware of (and able to correct) my skating knee posture thanks to this
Thank you for posting this information. This will help me when I’m trying to strut walk.
Thank you for the details.👍🤗🤗I'll practice step by step.😁
Love your tutorials, amazing teaching technique and relaxing to listen to! Thank you!

I salute you BrothaMan!
I knew to bend knees and too far obviously feels and looks wrong, but I didn’t know it could cause damage. As always...thank you 🙏

My plates have been upgraded! The feeling is 100% better. My knees and feet don't hurt and I feel more stable. Now, I just gotta keep practicing!😎😎

@@BFunkphenomenon Thank you. I already have dodgey knee and we're constantly told - get lower. I will be mindful
