  • I have just edited this old footage In 1997 I Walked the Cape York peninsula in Australia
I started at the river Daintree and two months later after trekking 1000km I reached the top.
it was my first long distance walk and it turned into one of the best experiences of my life.
I have to apologise for the poor audio and picture quality as the film was shot on a secondhand hi8 video camera
hope film will be enjoyable to watch.

I operated 4WD tours to Cape York for many years. I was once parked within Lakefield National Park grabbing a quick nap after repairing a minor fault in my Toyota. I was awoken by a clear voice, "Hello mate", I answered with, "Where the bloody hell did you come from?". I'm certain that was you. (Incidentally, Lakefield is 1.6 million acres!) I absolutely loved your video, congratulations on a mighty achievement. At the time you walked to the 'tip', more people had walked on the moon than to Cape York, so you go into the history books, particularly in the UK. Cheers mate. Tim, Cairns, Queensland, Australia.

      hi Tim
glad you enjoyed the video it was my first attempt at filming one of my adventures , meeting people like yourself made that Journey so special.
Lakefield was one of my favourite stretches as the terrain was significantly easier to walk on and I loved the vast open Country.
I also recall another Australian gentlemen answer me with, 'where the bloody hell did you come from?" it was after I had just waded across the Jardine river, I think he called me a xxxxing crazy pommy something I would here often!!!
I loved the cape and the people
      all the best jon

Ofah's Dyke walk with Joy brought me here Jon. I am stunned. I loved every minute of this mate. Connecting the man I've been watching in the beautiful UK countryside, as a super adventurous and fit young bloke - wow. We are the same people when we are young and when old I reckon. I too was adventurous, and even spent a few years in remote Australia - but mate, I was NEVER THAT ADVENTUROUS! Great job, thank you very much. John NZ

It is so refreshing to find a video about Cape York that is NOT 4WD. Well done.

Just found your channel a couple of days ago and I’m loving it. Love how while you are front and centre in the videos the story is about the adventure and not about you. It’s really refreshing. And this is a magnificent adventure. Love it. Most of all I’m glad you made it across the Jardine. You are so very lucky….Jon mentioned he ‘didn’t have a clue’ at the beginning of the video…but anyone who watches this and is inspired to do the same or similar - don’t wade across (or use lightweight watercraft like a SUP on ) waters that are possibly croc infested - the outcome is often not as uneventful as it was for Jon. The rest of the adventure - absolutely go for it!

DUDE this is amazing! What a discovery on RUclips.I searched "Coen" because I was bartering there for a bout a month... I also worked on a nature documentary on Cape York and QLD's tropical rainforests. This video stirred a lot of memories, and man, you're a tough nut! CHEERS!

I guess we all remember where we were when we heard that Princess Diana had been killed. I was at home making my early morning cup of tea. You were on a great adventure.
I first heard about you recently watching a motorcycle video by the 'Exeter Rider' I've, now, started watching your videos - You've certainly had some fantastic ones. It's inspiring. I'd planned to go on a bit of an adventure, myself, this year, but Covid got in the way. Nevertheless, watching your adventures has kept me inspired to do it as soon as I can. It won't be anything quite as adventurous as you've already done but, you know what they say " If you're out of your comfort zone, you're having an adventure "

Good comment Geoff, indeed, When Jon posted that I recall I was in the shed fixing rust holes in my Cressida! I had 3 young kids and not much cash, but we were all happy. I wondered why the Radio presented (in NZ) stopped the song to announce that sad news. Not being a royal's follower I had no clue how important she was to so many, and I get the context better now.

Good on ya mate, some hard yakka in that adventure, it would of broken many men well before reaching the Cape. Wouldn't surprise me if not much has changed since, but the old footage was nice to see, good memories of a much simpler time before tech became more mainstream.

Centipede...not a milipede.....small one.......but credit where credits due....well done...refreshing to see a visitor to our country dodging the standard tourist traps and seeing the proper aussie bush.....walking across the Jardine a bit questionable though....be torn between run/scuttle/splashing and possibly drawing the attention of the LARGE number of crocs around there or trying to ninja/sneak across....ballsy.....mate,your pretty tough for a pom😉.......well done....ps....didja walk back?

      hi mike
glad you have enjoyed the films, for me they are an enjoyably bye product to make after my adventures .
i have just returned from walking the southwest coast path here in my home counties, its taken me two months and 630 mile so hope to make a short film about that trip soon?
also working on another old film about when i bought and traveled with a horse in newzealand sadly only have a small amount of footage, so its a work in progress?
you asked which is my favourite ? honestly loved all of them, but walking across Australia taught me the most about life.
next adventure is paddling the length of the Yukon River May 25th next year is the start date.
may I ask which film did you enjoy the most?
mike I am dyslexic so sorry if this is spelt wrong hopefully spell check has corrected most of my spelling mistakes
