LYRICS: Heave lads! Ho lads! Forget the comforts of home you’re a nomad We've lost so much since we first started Are our hearts cold or are we cold hearted? So pray to your lord or your foreman That the sun might rise in the morning They told us hell was warm But our empire fell for shelter from the storm On the run from London town Nothing left but rubble there to plunder now Torn asunder, buried underground Beneath the tundra and a hundred weight of brothers drowned Now we’re gonna need another crown So huddle round, hunker down, man the shovels, plough And every hundred paces pray and lay another down Another mother, son or lover lost, the frost is out - For lonely drifters in the snow drifts, won’t be scuppered now Stay devout, tough it out, til the sun is out Trust the censor, shun dissenters, hunt and flush them out Keep the faith and trust there’s grace behind the thunderclouds Or fall in line and march in time against the climate, proud What are we becoming now? How’s a shepherd supposed to lead without a dog to herd the sheep? These choices that I make, I make to save our nation What’s a little sawdust when you face annihilation? Is childhood so sacred? Or just resources wasted? Every value that I thought I had debased and razed to save us Heave lads! Ho lads! Forget the comforts of home you’re a nomad We've lost so much since we first started Are our hearts cold or are we cold hearted? So pray to your lord or your foreman That the sun might rise in the morning They told us hell was warm But our empire fell for shelter from the storm Growing up they told no two snowflakes are the same And every one's a wonder, something not to take in vain Of mother nature's beauty. Of the universe at play. Seems she's abstained from duty, left us here and turned away. Fingers splintered into kindling and hearts as dark as coal As heat and hope are dwindling we march towards our goal Committed to the hymns we sing so after all is told The generations after us aren't cast into the cold So burn us in the furnace, let our souls ignite the flame Use our bones to stoke the embers. Use our blood to oil the chains. We are nothing now but engines rending flesh to find a way And as we fall we know we die to light a brighter day Every shiver will deliver us deliverance in time Burn the incense of our innocence and in a sense we thrive Pray the future that we're building will be worth its weight in lives So take heed but take no pity as the city must survive
Just listened to the remaster, and immediately came here to listen to the original... It really is like how I felt listening to it; the original feels like a worker's song, sung by them, while the remaster sounds more like a modern remix of an old worker's song, using aspects of EDM and similar to jazz it up, but in the remixing it lost some of its charm, for me. All the power to those that like it, but the original will forever be the superior version for me.
I definitely feel it. The remix has a different feel to it, it feels more like they were singing it at the end of the game, as opposed to the beginning. In the remix, it's a more experienced choir celebrating the citys survival, the solo orator has gone down the faith route much further, and is putting much more practiced fervor into their performance. They lived through it, had the time to practice, and refined the song. The original, as you said, has the workers song feel to it. This is onething that they woul have come up when they're just begining, angry at the world, stuck in the tents and picking coal from piles by hand. They've got a dfferent vibe to it, both which fit the game. The remaster is triumphant, they've conqured the hardest challenge (so far), and are celebrating. The original is still developing, setting the tune to the swing of pickaxes and wrenches, pushing the scouts forward as the trundle through the snow. I like both.
I could not possibly say it better. The original was a masterpiece, quite possibly one of Stupendium's greatest works in my opinion, and the remaster, while certainly not a bad song at all, simply doesn't reach nearly as high as the original.
I've listened to this a ton of times and I finally felt the need to post. Shit man, you captured the desperation but also the hope of the game - I love that you entertain both faith and order in your lyrics as well, each line is a little reference to something in the game. That chorus is basically a summary of the game. The Order bit of "fall in line and march in time against the climate, proud" is my favorite partisan line - I love that you portrayed Order as defiance against nature. "An empire forged in the flames of what we gave up" is fucking great. The absolute gut-punch is "So burn us in the furnace let our souls ignite the flame use our bones to stoke the embers use our blood to oil the chains we are nothing now but engines rending flesh to find a way and as we fall we know we die to light a brighter day - every shiver will deliver us deliverance in time burn the incense of our innocence and in a sense we thrive - PRAY THE FUTURE THAT WE'RE BUILDING WILL BE WORTH IT'S WEIGHT IN LIVES so take heed but take no pity as the city must survive". The future being worth its weight in lives is literally all anyone can hope for, so I'm a huge fan of that lyric. Sorry for quoting a big chunk but I really feel you nailed the whole spirit of the game in that. Your lines were great and I really hope to see more of the caliber of this, The House Always Wins and It's a Joy from you!
@@PhysPushscale maybe because it's not singing but a poetic rapping style. I'd also like to add that it kind of makes sense to portray this kind of desperation in a tone that's empty
I know nothing about this game, but I love the underlying narrative going on in the song. Saying everything was fine once, but now there is only the frost, and how old civilizations have broken down under it. Talking of the hardships and how material wealth doesn't matter, just fuel for fires to keep you warm. Showing multiple ages of the city rising and falling, while talking about the problems the Frost is making and how the only solutions may be grim but they must be done to survive. The song itself is masterfully crafted and is made even better by this story happening in the background
It's tough. It really is. I'd played resource-management games many times in the past, thought I could handle it. Either I suck at this game (possibility) or it's just that merciless. This rap song really does sum it up well.
Just thought I’d mention to you (though you may already have the answer if you bought the game) what’s happening in the background would be a nice narrative, but unfortunately isn’t how it goes, you can only choose one, either order, or faith. That said, it is possible to go too far in either... so it is up to you how the narrative ends (in the base scenario at least)
I disagree. For example, the major living generations from Boomers onwards were given a lot, but we also inherited the problems of global warming, extreme financial inequality, the consequences of centuries of institutionalized racism, and a lot more than that. On the flip side, we inherited the internet, advanced medical science extending the average human lifespan significantly, and so many computer-related technologies as to be difficult to count (i.e. the smart phone). Moreover, the advancement of technology is moving faster than it ever has before, and may in fact offer us solutions to some or all of the problems we've inherited.
@@noneofyerbisness8702 it's a doubled sided sword in my eyes, yes we have the keys of our modern technological power spinning around our fingers. But we have to now tackle the problems created from this rapid technological Age. Deforestation, dying countries politically torn, Europeans suffering under war, and the total disregard of human life compared to a corporations view of us as nothing more then moving wallets.
Admittedly, I'm late to the party & have never even heard of the game before but this song is a goddamn anthem, a dark dystopian cautionary tale woven by an expert lyricist and I'm loving every second of it. If I was the developer, I'd patch it right in, either for the credits or the title sequence. No, it's really _that_ good.
I'd be interested in reading it. not many high quality fan works for frostpunk. other than stupendium and dans songs there's two narrative gameplays i know of and thats it as far as i know
@@seanarano4754 A few friends of mine have worked on poems about Frostpunk, but they didn't publish them. I don't know if they ever will honestly, it's kind of sad. I read some of them, it's a shame nobody else gets to see them, though I can understand their struggle of not knowing where to publish them to reach the fandom.
"Burn the insensce of our innocence and in a sense we thrive" holy crap, that's unironically fucking genius. Stupendium, you are the unchallenged master of alliteration.
"Are our hearts cold, or are we cold-hearted?" is such an amazing line. I feel like it sums up everything that Frost Punk is about. Love your work dude!
Dude, I have not played a single game this guy raps about, and Ill be honest, when I saw raps based on video games, I inwardly rolled my eyes... But the themes he explores, the artistry of the lyrics, and even the beat are all fucking amazing and even relatable on the first two counts. This is fantastic.
@@thrawnnoconnection6931 oh I actually bought it some time after this. It was a lot of fun. Don't really have too much time for games anymore, but glad I picked this up.
To this day, I doubt I’ll find “better” music. This song just gets better and better every time I listen to it. I could easily sing this complete song from memory in my sleep at this point, I really hope one day another game like frostpunk is released so we can get another masterpiece like this.
I'm obseessed with this song and cried multiple times listening to it. Both this song and the game are increadible on an emotional level. I'm sure there are people out there who would scoff at the idea of a song based on a video-game. But it's a long standing tradition among the songwriters and poets to write pieces about paintings, stories, myths and folklore. Video-games like Frostpunk are nothing less than stories of old and this song is nothing less than "Der Ring Des Nibelungen".
I feel like the more you play, the less the choices feel like a moral dilemma and the more they become something that you are choosing to get the best possible outcome. I remember never wanting to make a snowpit because that would be terrible for the people during the first playthroughs, but now I sign it every time for that 20% medical boost. This song really brought back the feelings of dear god what am I forcing them into that I felt during my first steps into Frostpunk. Very well done!
More melodic than your previous work. Some artists put out the same works over and over. Yours have an individuality to each piece. For example this isn't the same lyrical roller-coaster the board game rap was, but it has a deeper sense of emotion to it. My point is that this is a good thing, and I hope you keep it up in the future. Great song!
His songs always take on qualities of the games they're based off of. Okie Doki was bright and cheery at the start, and stayed that way the entire song except with more and more corruption. Beware the Aftermath had a bouncy, edutainment-esque beat with a bit of wavering as more and more was found out. Shelter From the Storm has a pounding bass line with lyrical beats that never waver from the sounds of the background, and got more and more inspired as the cast got more and more invigorated. Truly not only a man with musical mastery, but with the understanding of a dictionary, and the integrity of an art degree.
More powerful than the other songs... That's a good thing! You're one of the more varied artists on RUclips, and that's a good thing! Keep up the great work!
I can't stop listening to this song. Not only the performance is top-notch, but the lyrics... the lyrics are a masterpiece. The last verse is reaching to the deepest part of my heart.
Dude, I've listened to like 10 songs from this guy, and I can definitely say that he is the real deal. He can actually sing AND he's a talented rapper. He is also great at changing his voice and appearance to suit a part. This guy's going places!
This song sent *chills* down my spine! Geddit? Great Job! This is so emotional, and I love the way the lyrics are so raw they feel like they are frostbitten! Just like any other winter lol
My favorite line has to be Pray the future that we're building will be worth its weight in lives. So incredibly deep and relevant to history and the present.
I still cannot figure out just how this is one of your most under-watched videos. It's really a masterpiece and in my opinion is still one of your best ones. Though then again, I enjoy the more melodic stuff like 'The house always wins' but still, keep up the good work and I hope to see more like these two I mentioned! You also actually got me to watch an entire playthrough of frostpunk DLC included, if I was any good at those sorts of games, I'd have even bought it but, had more of a time watching it slowly come together as an observer. That's how much you got me into this darn track of yours, thank you for it!
no matter how much time passes, this song remains among my favorites, it never fails to make me feel something, be it goosebumps or a odd sense of determination, you did amazingly with this song, just like every song you make
Its jaw dropping watching you improve with each video when I didn't think your quality could get any better, yet you prove me wrong every time! Dude, seriously you are incredible.
I can't believe that stupendium channel exist. He makes amazing songs, with amazing production every month. Even he's old songs like "find the keys" "aftermath" and this one(shelter from the storm) is amazing. I just wish him reach 1 million sub)
I love the line "Are our hearts cold or are we cold hearted" Even though I haven't played much frostpunk, it still resonated strongly with me when I heard it and remembered the questions of morality I asked myself while playing
I feel this might just be one of the most heart-tearing songs I've heard all decade, worthy of singing along loudly and proudly whenever it rolls by. Sidenote; this song actually pushed me over the edge and by the game; no regrets.
Morning Gathering or Evening Prayer We still battle for the Season Fair We still huddle in the Freezing Air For a Summer that's not even there... _- Father Holgate, The Church of Divinity_
If that sun won’t rise on our horizon we’ll march on to spite the skies and find that wheel of progress so we’ll worn brought us ok shelter from the storm.
My favorite part of this song is the last verse. The somber way the verse begins ("Growing up the told us no two snowflakes were the same...") and the intensity and determination it leads into (So burn us in the furnace let our souls ignite the flames!..") followed by the final declaration of "So take heed but take no pity as the City Must Survive." Stupendium, you lyrical genius.
How you’re able to capture the essence of every game you make a song for is downright phenomenal. Not only that, from telling that game’s story, to the wordplay, to the feeling you get at the end of each song, it’s not something that I can put into words accurately. The only thing I can definitely say is that you’re incredible for creating these masterpieces.
"So burn us in the furnace that our souls ignite the flames, use our bones to stoke the embers, use our blood to oil the chains!" My absolute favourite part
I've said for years that my nations current National anthem is... Pretty shit. I mean, most national anthems aren't exactly belters, but mine doesn't even mention the people of the country its supposed to comemorate. I am morbidly curious to know what The Stupendium would come up with if they had to rewrite our national anthem from scratch...
You, JT Music, and Dan Bull are the current generation of rappers that are actually good. I'm pursuing a music career so I can take part in the big role of music in the next generation so it doesn't turn crap (cough cough mumble rap, too much trap). You guys inspire me, and since I'm young, I think I've got a chance. Keep going and let that fire burn in your heart. Peace :)
You sir need to look for one Zack Hemsey he is more well known for his instrumental but what many don't realize is that many of his instrumental pieces also had a rapping component. Two of my personal favorites from him album wise are Ronin and Nomad both of which have powerful lyrics and impressive rapping alongside equally impressive instrumentals. If ever a man should say rap is bad Zack Dan and the others you've mentioned alongside the Stupendium himself are the first I'd send them to.
No matter how many times I listen to this song, "Each shiver will deliver us deliverance in time" gives me chills. It is clearly the sacred rule of the universe, and each chill that I get from it brings me one step closer to sublimation and enlightenment.
I found this channel last winter when I had a terrible 2 hour long commute at 6am. This song legit helped me get through that more than once. Thanks Stupendium
Mercury would actually turn into solid metal at -37 degrees Celsius, making Mercury thermometers useless after a bit (I think it gets to like -50 in Frostpunk) From what I've heard, its a soft metal like tin when solid.
I find it interesting that it appears that the Order city failed (as shown from the destroyed factory at 2:08), and how it's seemingly replaced by Faith. I just discovered Stupendium today, and I'm having a blast going through all of the songs! I love seeing the deeper meanings in the video itself. I love all of the effort put into these videos!
Not only this song sold me the game, it also enriched my playtrough, played it in my head constantly as I embraced the storm. "The city must survive" sends chill down my spine every time now. Great work.
This song was made quite a while ago but I feel like I should leave this comment just to say This is by far one of the best songs I've ever heard, and most of my favorite songs come from you guys so keep up the good work!
after seeing the game on sale, I remembered this song, and decided to give it a shot. it's an amazing game, that first of all, but one thing always stands out to me about your songs: they are extremely cleverly written, with references to the game both integral and not taking away any of the charm the songs have if you don't know them.
youtube threw this at me instead of the remastered version and it is just so incredible how much you've changed and improved in just the three years between the songs! i was genuinely taken aback! This is already incredible but the remaster shows the unique and challening tequinques and methods you've used to improve upon yourself and the diffrence was so jarring. Keep up the good work man! You're amazing!
I would suggest playing it you don’t just make something and slowly make it bigger and bigger like roller coaster tycoon cause in this you could lose it all you have to make choices that you wouldn’t want to but you must do what you have to survive
Game just gives you a big fuck you and then you'll have to troubleshoot for like an hour or reformat or you might just be lucky and be able to start the game off the bat.
It’s been about 8 months and I’m still on this channel. It’s too good. After obsessing over Frostpunk and letting that help me find out about Subnauticas new dlc, it’s amazing. I NEED THE GAME!
I keep returning to this song even after all this time, and often, in the end, I tear up. It is one of your best written song in my eyes. Something about the bittersweet blend of forced hope and overwhelming despair, channeled into this self-sacrificial resolve speaks to me and gets me every time.
Just came over here from Dan’s video... you did an amazing job on that song and I love this one too! I can tell you played through the game and wanted to make a song that does it justice and you did just that! Well done! Edit: You absolutely captured the essence of it and I can’t get enough! :) I think I’ll stick around

No, everyone knows the theme for winter is that Santa's gonna give Krampus a turn at christmas and then he'll terrorize humanity for the festive season. (In other words, it would probably be more like a Very Scary Christmas)
40K subscribers back then. Oh how far you've come good sir! And now Frostpunk 2 is on the horizon! I'm looking forward to what both you and DanBull will do with it!
I'm in Texas right now and the winter storm hit yesterday, i haven't had power for 24 hours figured I'd listen to this while hunkered down with a blanket in my sleeping bag for extra warmth :) 4°F 💀❄ Update: after 35 hours or so without electricity the power came back on so all's good on my end now.

LYRICS:
Heave lads! Ho lads!
Forget the comforts of home you’re a nomad
We've lost so much since we first started
Are our hearts cold or are we cold hearted?
So pray to your lord or your foreman
That the sun might rise in the morning
They told us hell was warm
But our empire fell for shelter from the storm
On the run from London town
Nothing left but rubble there to plunder now
Torn asunder, buried underground
Beneath the tundra and a hundred weight of brothers drowned
Now we’re gonna need another crown
So huddle round, hunker down, man the shovels, plough
And every hundred paces pray and lay another down
Another mother, son or lover lost, the frost is out -
For lonely drifters in the snow drifts, won’t be scuppered now
Stay devout, tough it out, til the sun is out
Trust the censor, shun dissenters, hunt and flush them out
Keep the faith and trust there’s grace behind the thunderclouds
Or fall in line and march in time against the climate, proud
What are we becoming now?
Is this the life we prayed for?
Time is running out.
There’s nothing left but labour.
We write our future in the ice like it was pen and paper
Leave for future generations more than just a generator
We must never waiver. This is the price we pay for.
Safety one day for our children on the path we pave them
In the end know that history depends
On an empire forged in the flames of what we gave up
Heave lads! Ho lads!
Forget the comforts of home you’re a nomad
We've lost so much since we first started
Are our hearts cold or are we cold hearted?
So pray to your lord or your foreman
That the sun might rise in the morning
They told us hell was warm
But our empire fell for shelter from the storm
Turn your collars to the wind
As our odyssey begins
Feel the ice creeping in until your bones sing
As the tempest descends and your ears ring
That’s the bells of the church that we’re preaching
Now grieving is a luxury we spun to weave our cloaks
Comfort, warmth and plenty feel like centuries ago
The storm won’t crush our spirits like a tent beneath the snow
Every upper lip gets stiff at 20°C below
No gold or silver, coal’s the only thing of worth to me
The only precious metal to our name would be the mercury
That fragile strip of burgundy that ever hurtles to the deep
Alerting us as Mother Nature’s taking every cursed degree
I’ve nothing left, my only treasure is my word to keep
Keep bellies filled, treat the ill and preserve the heat
But can I keep the peace as we bleed through adversity?
How’s a shepherd supposed to lead
without a dog to herd the sheep?
These choices that I make, I make to save our nation
What’s a little sawdust when you face annihilation?
Is childhood so sacred? Or just resources wasted?
Every value that I thought I had debased and razed to save us
Heave lads! Ho lads!
Forget the comforts of home you’re a nomad
We've lost so much since we first started
Are our hearts cold or are we cold hearted?
So pray to your lord or your foreman
That the sun might rise in the morning
They told us hell was warm
But our empire fell for shelter from the storm
Growing up they told no two snowflakes are the same
And every one's a wonder, something not to take in vain
Of mother nature's beauty.
Of the universe at play.
Seems she's abstained from duty, left us here and turned away.
Fingers splintered into kindling and hearts as dark as coal
As heat and hope are dwindling we march towards our goal
Committed to the hymns we sing so after all is told
The generations after us aren't cast into the cold
So burn us in the furnace, let our souls ignite the flame
Use our bones to stoke the embers.
Use our blood to oil the chains.
We are nothing now but engines rending flesh to find a way
And as we fall we know we die to light a brighter day
Every shiver will deliver us deliverance in time
Burn the incense of our innocence and in a sense we thrive
Pray the future that we're building will be worth its weight in lives
So take heed but take no pity as the city must survive

Shame you killed your town eh?
Wow this is the best song
Just listened to the remaster, and immediately came here to listen to the original... It really is like how I felt listening to it; the original feels like a worker's song, sung by them, while the remaster sounds more like a modern remix of an old worker's song, using aspects of EDM and similar to jazz it up, but in the remixing it lost some of its charm, for me. All the power to those that like it, but the original will forever be the superior version for me.
Absolutely agreed
Same
I definitely feel it.
The original was a masterpiece, quite possibly one of Stupendium's greatest works in my opinion, and the remaster, while certainly not a bad song at all, simply doesn't reach nearly as high as the original.
had the same thoughts. This one feels more like it has soul.
The remaster is fine, but this? This is sorrow
"let our souls ignite the flame, use our bones to stoke the embers, use our blood to oil the chains" the most metal line ive ever heard
Ye
There’s one line in every Stupendium song I feel the mad urge to get tattooed on my forehead, and this is that one.
Thank you, man! That last verse is one of my favourite lyrics I've written so I'm glad you enjoyed it!
This post deserves more likes. This person obviously took the time to show how he felt about a great song.
Lyrics are maybe good but the presentation/vocal feels empty. Its more like reading not singing
@@PhysPushscale maybe because it's not singing but a poetic rapping style. I'd also like to add that it kind of makes sense to portray this kind of desperation in a tone that's empty
dNL i honestly dont think this would have worked as well in a more pure singing format
Are our hearts cold or are we cold hearted?
Damn, that verse got me!
‘Twas the chorus
I know nothing about this game, but I love the underlying narrative going on in the song. Saying everything was fine once, but now there is only the frost, and how old civilizations have broken down under it. Talking of the hardships and how material wealth doesn't matter, just fuel for fires to keep you warm. Showing multiple ages of the city rising and falling, while talking about the problems the Frost is making and how the only solutions may be grim but they must be done to survive. The song itself is masterfully crafted and is made even better by this story happening in the background
You really should get the game it's worth it I think anyways
It's tough. It really is. I'd played resource-management games many times in the past, thought I could handle it. Either I suck at this game (possibility) or it's just that merciless. This rap song really does sum it up well.
Man if you can write this from 4 minutes I’d love to see your essays
WorldWalker128 yeah I played a bunch of these games and almost every time I pick child labour to fill the hot houses and cook houses
"Use our blood to oil the chains"
Greatest line.
Use our bones to stoke the flames.
Burn us in the embers let are souls ignite the flame
We are nothing now but engines rending forward to find a way
And as we fall we know we die to light a brighter day
Burn the incense of our innocence and in a sense we survive
i think this song alone has attracted people to the game
Me before watching the song: wtf is a "frostpunk"
Me after watching the song: ...welp there goes 20 or so dollars...

"There is a mysterious cycle in human events. To some generations much is given. Of other generations much is expected."
- Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Our generation certainly had a lot given to it hope the next generation can do better.
Hard times create great men. Great men create good times. Good times create weak men. Weak men create hard times.

FROSPUNK TWO NEXT YEAR BABY!!!
Great song!

Yes You And Second Comment Above Me Guy Pretty Much Summed Up My Exact Thoughts Perfectly

My favorite part of this song is the last verse. The somber way the verse begins ("Growing up the told us no two snowflakes were the same...") and the intensity and determination it leads into (So burn us in the furnace let our souls ignite the flames!..") followed by the final declaration of "So take heed but take no pity as the City Must Survive." How you’re able to capture the essence of every game you make a song for is downright phenomenal. Not only that, from telling that game’s story, to the wordplay, to the feeling you get at the end of each song, it’s not something that I can put into words accurately. The only thing I can definitely say is that you’re incredible for creating these masterpieces.
