3D Printing: Monoprice Mini Select Cura Settings

- Here’s a quick guide on how to set up the Monoprice Maker Select Mini 3D printer using Cura 15.04.2
In my experience, even though the newer versions of Cura have a lot of fantastic features to offer, this older version is a bit more stable and reliable for the Mini.

You should do a video with the same printer, but with the latest Cura in 2019-2020.
wow the fact you have a video on this specific model is incredible 😂 thanks Tom
It was my first 3D printer! So much fun.
Read a bunch of articles, reddit threads, etc. and nothing helped until I came across this video. I think my problem was I needed to slow down the bottom layer speed, but I would've never known how to do that if I didn't download the older version of Cura that you suggested. Thank you so much for the video!
Oh wow, this is exactly why I wanted to make the video. I’m SO glad it was helpful!
Thank you! At last, a youtuber who knows exactly what he wants to say, doesn't go off-topic, explains carefully and with the minimum of words. Much appreciated!
Thanks! I try to be clear and concise 👍
This is one of the best, clearest and most informative software instruction for my printer I’ve found. Although I’ve been interest in it for years, I’m brand spankin’ new to 3D printing and just picked up my first Monoprice Mini Select. I wanted something to play with before my SnapMaker 350 comes next year. You’ve got my ear and subscription.
I’m really glad it helped! The 3D printing community on youtube is pretty great and has so much knowledge to offer. 👍
Great Video! I just got my Mini 2 for Christmas and have been learning/playing with it for about a day. I've learned more in this 10 minute video than I did all day. Thanks!
Awesome to hear and congrats on entering the highly addictive world of 3D printing!
Excellent video, thanks!
I am awaiting delivery of this printer and it will be my very first experience of 3D printing. I have designed a sample part in Freecad, but was having trouble converting the .stl file to g-code using the latest version of Cura. Taking your advice and using an earlier version has simplified the process, and having a handy set of appropriate settings is great.
Thanks again.
Sounds like you’re prepared! It’s a super solid printer, I love mine. Happy printing!
Very cool explanation, this makes me feel better about entering this new world of 3d printing.
It's a very fun world to experiment in and learn as you go, especially if you like tinkering around a bit.
Great video. I'm ordering the Monoprice Maker Select for my birthday and this will help a great deal. Thanks...
Fantastic! Happy Birthday! Hope you enjoy the printer.
+Gregory Wise "Great video. I'm ordering the Monoprice Maker Select for my birthday and this will help..." Not sure about the Maker Select but all the Select Mini V2 can print is a default "cat" that came pre-installed to print out. That's it. These printers are advertised as "ready to print right out the box" but this is a lie. " At this point I think this whole 3D print thing is a scam.
Hi Tom your videos are always explained so well and imformative. Thanks again for another great video, I am going to try 3D printing.
It’s a really fun hobby, and the. If you get very into it, it can actually be super useful when you create your own original prints. It’s very relaxing to just sit and watch the printer.
Very helpful. Thanks for the video!
Glad it was helpful!
this is the video i watch everytime i redownload cura (:
Thank you for this! It was super helpful!
You’re welcome, I’m really glad it helped!
I got a lot of stuff from this thank you
I'm happy to hear that! Good luck with your printer!
Excellent video thank you.
Great video, I put the numbers right into my program.
Awesome, I’m glad to hear it! 👍
Great video. Incredibly informative.
I’m so glad you found it helpful!
Dude, what a helpful video. Thanks!
So I just got the Monoprice Mini Pro and since this video has come out there are obviously newer versions of Cura out. I was wondering if you would still recommend using version 15.04.2 or if you do you think the newest version is better? Thank you for the video!
Hi Paul! I still use this version with this printer, mainly because I figure it it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The new version of Cura is really nice though, I just haven’t used it with this model.
What is it about this old version of Cura that works better?
I don’t know exactly, and I’m sure you could get the newer version to work, it’s just kind of a “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” situation.
WOW!!! My first ever "Learn 3d Printing" video and probably my last. Amazing video!!
Hey Tom, I was searching some 3d printing stuff and fancy seeing you here! Are you still into printing, and do you have more current suggestions?
I still love printing as a hobby! My favorite all around printer is the Prusa Mini. Obviously it's not very big, but it's so reliable and easy to use! I love the Prusa filament too.
Really informative video!
Hey Tom would you share the power supply description?!! I just picked one up but no power supply
Thanks, this was very helpful!
You’re welcome, thanks for the idea!
Thank you so much for your video. I am new and this is extremely helpful indeed.
Great, glad it helped! Let me know if you have any other questions/issues.
The Enthusiasm Project that’s cool.
Am thinking of getting this printer
It’s a great printer, and the newer V2 is even more improved. For the price, this one is really tough to beat.
helped a lot thanks! :)
Awesome, I’m glad!
Thankyou. Very helpful.
You’re welcome!
woha! nice filament guide. Got a thingi link?
Sure do! It's not my design, but here's a link to the Thingiverse page: www.thingiverse.com/thing:2163508
I've had it on both my Minis for several months and it works great!
So, I've hit a bit of a snag. When we opened the version of Cura you recommend in the video on my Mac OS 10.13.6, our printer is not listed there. We have a Monoprice Select Mini 3D Printer V2. We selected "Other", but on the next window the "Predefined Machine Profiles" listed are not a match to our printer. Any suggestions?
Hi Jennifer! Since that’s an older version of Cura, you’ll need to create a new printer profile and the add in the settings for the V2 Mini.
Jennifer Harper CT FAC I am having same issue, did you get it to work?
do you have a new link for the version of cura you used?
This link should work: github.com/Ultimaker/Cura/archive/15.04.2.zip
It's getting tougher now that the software is older.
I followed everything but my extruder continuously melts the pla and doesn't place anything on the plate and if it does it's all scratchy... But if I print the cat gcode, it prints perfectly ?!?
If the cat is printing fine, but your own prints aren’t, then it’s definitely a slicer setting. Maybe try creating a new printer profile from scratch? Or try importing the cat guide to Cura and building off of that?
@@tombuck I'll definitely try making a fresh new setting for the printer but when I import the cat gcode all the settings seem to be the same
That’s really strange. Hmm, I’m stumped!
Same here. The cat prints absolutely perfectly and nothing else prints at all. Not even the first few layers stick to the bed. So frustrating.
@@tombuck thank you for all the help but I think im going to return the printer and try out a different one possibly only because this one's to much of an issue for me, if you need some pla you can have the new roll I bought that I don't need now! Thanks again !
Having trouble with Amazonbasic pla have you heard of an issues with this pla
Hey Enthusiasm. I have the Monoprice mini, But I'm having a very minor issue with it. I am getting some stringing problems with my models, and I have done the stringing test multiple times. (Currently the Retraction rate is 4MM and the Retraction speed is 40MM.) No matter what settings I use, I feel like it is not changing at all and I still have the same issue. What do you recommend?
Hey! Whenever I’ve had stringing issues it’s always been related to temperature (usually too high)
The Enthusiasm Project The thing is, it’s on the lowest temperature setting. The PLA + recommends 205 at the lowest setting, so it’s at 205.
That’s seems right. Have you tried 200 just to see? The other thing is to make sure the nozzle is clean without any clogs.
@@tombuck The nozzle seems clean; Nothing is stuck underneath it or in it and it's printing filament fine. I am doing a test run of 200 just to see if it will work.
@@tombuck Wow, I can't believe how much I had to turn it down! It was at 205, but now it is at 190! My Printer must be set really hot or something, Here's a video!
You can see in the beginning that the stringing is about to start, That was at 205, The Middle was 200, and then the recent print is 190. Thanks for your help, and check it out!

Great video. Question Im getting the mini this week should I download the new cura version or do the 15.04.2? reason Im asking is because this video is 2 years old. thanks
It's a good question. I still use the old version of Cura with this printer, but it's hard to find online anymore. If you're starting out fresh with a new printer, you might as well go with the newest version of Cura. The software really has come quite a long way.
@@tombuck Thank you so much
pretty challenging finding a good link to download it for mac
Great video. May I ask if you've tried to connect this printer via usb to your computer? If so, how? Thanks!
Hey Carlos, thanks for watching! I tried connecting it via USB when I first got it, but I haven’t done it since. I prefer to print directly from the SD card so that the printer is a standalone unit.
It is now Feb 2022 and Windows 10 does not have the proper python library for Cura 15 to run. Cura 15 is a nice simple unbloated program. I am now working with Prusa Slicer which is very nice and clean.
Your video is wonderful" I learned a lot from it and it will help me considerably. I have been looking for a video or videos of how to do the slicing and editing a file. I hope you post a video on my printer.
Thank you! Which printer do you have?
I have the Monoprice one that you used on the video but its the aluminum one with wireless and self leveling build plate and no dial. It has the touch screen. Its the pro version of the printer.
Oh awesome! That’s the newest one, I’ve been really curious about it but haven’t used it yet.
Should I use the version of cura included in the printer?
I would try it out. They’ve made so many updates to Cura in the past year, that it’s really become an impressive program.
Total noob here looking into getting this printer. Is there a way to print by connecting the printer to the computer or do you always have to load the model onto the microSD card and put that in the printer?
Hey Eric, the printer has a USB port, so you can definitely print directly from a computer. HOWEVER, I strongly recommend using the SD card for reliability. If something happens to your computer while the printer is connected, it can disrupt the print and cause all kinds of issues. If you're using the SD card, the printer is independent and a bit more reliable.
This is just my way of doing it though. Plenty of people print via USB with no issues, so whatever works for you. This is a great first printer. You'll have a ton of fun with it, and you won't "outgrow" it as you gain more experience.
That was a long reply, hope it makes sense!
The Enthusiasm Project awesome! Thanks so much for the fast reply!
No problem! Let me know if there’s anything else I can try to help with.
Hi! I think Cura removed the list where you can find later models of the their software. I'm using the V2 and running into issues here and there printings smaller items and wanted to ask if you had any suggestions for settings on the most recent Cura 4.13.0?
Great Video! I am having trouble after I have saved my file. It wont allow me to transfer it on to my micro sd card
Really? Sometimes you need to format the SD card to erase any old “invisible” files that may be taking up space.
Is there a *text* version of this information? I don't have any good / useful to view this video (my computer does not have working speakers).
Is there any other way to print without loading the model onto the micro SD card? I do not have a Micro SD slot on my computer. When i received the printer, it did come with a USB to Android cable and i assumed that it could be transferred that way.
The easiest thing to do is get an SD adapter for the micro SD card. But if you don’t have that, it is possible to print via USB cable.
Help! The cura link dosent work anymore!
Thanks for telling me! It seems like they've changed a few things, but the older version of Cura can be found here: www.ulio3d.com/software
you have everything i needed and more! Fuck you are awesome
Now THAT’S a comment to make my day.
I have been having trouble with tolerance. Interlocking parts tend to stick together and it breaks when I try to snap it apart. Any suggestions? thx
You could try adjusting the resolution if you haven’t already. It’ll increase the time it takes to print, but should also increase the quality of the prints.
I can not get my printer to see anything on my sd card or get it to print via USB cable please help if you can?
Have you tried using a different SD card? To determine if the fault is with the printer or the card.
@@tombuck I have already tried this. It is not the card
You must NOT use a SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) card. Must be a low-density, older style standard micro SD card.
I bought this 2GB one www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001BNNZXO and it works in the MP Select Mini.
A brand-new 8GB Sandisk SDHC card did not work in the MPSM.
This is good advice. Thanks for the link- I’ve actually had a hard time finding non SDHC cards (a lot of audio recorders I use need them too).
Don't you use the Magic Number for layer height?
You know, I probably should. I’ve been having good luck with .1 for fine detail and .2 for general prints, but I’d be interested in seeing a comparison.
Cura 3.2.1 works well for the Delta but the second I went with 3.4 I got failures
Oh really? I’ve been using Simplify3D for the Delta with good results, but of course it’s not free unfortunately.
thanks for the video was very helpful i am having issues with a filament i got from amazon its a PETG. when i do the monoprice sample cat it works perfectly. when i do any other print files it does not stick no matter what i try i made sure all the settings match yours. what else should i check? why is it only the sample cat that sticks with this filament?
i want to make a 3d piece that i can use to make coin rings should i use ABS because it needs to be strong
If you’re after strength, ABS is the way to go. But the Mini can sometimes be fussy with it, so be sure to double check your temperatures.
great video! but i'm missing something . how do i get thr info from Cura to my computer, then to the sd mini card ?
Once you load your file into Cura and adjust the settings, then you just need to click the “save” icon and save it to the SD card. If the card isn’t inserted, then you can just save it straight to your desktop.
Cant find the Mac version of 15.04.2 Im trying 4.4.1 which seems to work but want to try this older version seems easier to use
I can use windows with this printer correct?
Yep, Cura work on Windows 👍
What was the blue stuff on d print bed
It’s just regular painter’s tape to help with bed adhesion 👍
The Enthusiasm Project Could i use this rather than glass?
Dude , I'm having trouble with my printer ☹ for a reason all my prints abort the process in the last 8 to 12 layers, do you now how to fix that ☹??
I can’t say offhand. But that definitely sounds like a gcode issue. Do the preinstalled prints from the card still work? If so, then that narrows down the issue.
@@tombuck the files that I download from thingivers always produce the same error , Idk if cura modify something on the code
Hi Guys, does anyone know where can I do update of my software of my MP Mini? I cannot find any source - I am a Mac user. :/
hey i was just wondering why my prints kept on warping during the printing process.
What do you mean by warping?
Are there magic numbers?
Here’s a bit of helpful info from the Wiki:
www.mpselectmini.com/optimal_layer
How do i get another sd card to work. Saves from cura but it says no files.
Maybe it has to do with how the card is formatted? I would try to format in in exFAT.
Trying to download 15.04 but all the versions are 3.X or 4.X - did they change version numbering?
It may be off the official site, but if you google it, you should be able to find legacy downloads for both PC and Mac. 👍
Are these settings also good for the v2?
Yes, they should work just fine.
Please help me: my printer to not recognize the files from the micro SD and it's a new SanDisk 32 g
Are they gcode files? Maybe try putting one of them on the card that came with the printer and see if that works?
Yes they are in gcode
I’m wondering if the Mini can’t read 32gb cards? If you can try the same files on an 8 or 16gb card that would be a good test.
The card sd that come with the printer windows tell me that i have to format its and after it said that windows can’t format it
Hmm, that’s bizarre. I wonder why? I’m a Mac guy so I can’t speak to Windows processes too well
Link to cura 15.04.2 source code, although i cant run it because i dont code very much, github.com/Ultimaker/Cura/releases/tag/15.04.2
Link to cura 15.04.6 the oldest program download i could find to use, so the easy way, www.mpselectmini.com/slicers/cura
hope this helps, please like so more can see this info
Hi Tom, I hate to sound like a total noob, but I'm running out of resources...I'm using the cura version from above...Ive put in the settings you indicated, but when I use an stl file (thingiverse) and slice it and save it to the sd card that came with the machine, the printer nuts out and makes all kinds of noises and wont print the file at all...it will print the cat gcode file with no problem at all...any advise as to what I'm doing wrong?
Hmm, that is a bit of a mystery. Does the print head move at all or just make noise? I’ve had printers do strange things when the bed size isn’t set correctly.
There is also the option of loading the cat gcode file into Cura and then saving those settings for future prints. If that file prints fine, then that may be the best option.
Let me know if that works, if not, I’m happy to help troubleshoot some more.
In the machine settings, is the Machine Center 0,0 checked? I accidentally checked mine and it really went crazy. It should be unchecked.
Thanks Spencer...I'm not sure if it was or not...ill check it out
Hi Tom...well, I did as you suggested and loaded the cat gcode file in to cura. I'm not sure it liked it very much and told me there was nothing to slice, so I saved it to the desktop and from there to the sd card. I put it in the machine and hit print. The printer came to life and started laying down the raft just like it should. I got about four fifths of the way through the print and I think I had a twist in the filament because the print stopped, so I now have a lobotomized cat...lol. I unwound the filament a bit and made sure its loose enough not to get tangled and I'm gonna try again in the morning....thanks for the advise and I will tell you how things turn out...thanks again
Hey Spencer, I checked and I did indeed have that checked...I unchecked it and with Toms help I may have it figured out...I really appreciate your help...thanks again
I am having trouble connecting my printer (mp select mini V2) through usb. Do you know how I might be able to do it?
Honestly, I’ve only ever printed from the SD card, so I don’t have experience using usb.
Yeah I did a little digging and it’s a common issue of this printer (not connecting through usb) so ima stick with the sd. Thanks for the reply
Glad you sorted it out, sorry I couldn’t be of more help 😕
The Enthusiasm Project no worries your video on how to install the glass bed was really helpful. I had no idea it was so easy to cut glass😁. I just rerouted the heated bed cables and I’ll be getting a glass bed next week. How’s your bed holding up so far ?
No issues at all. They’ll last as long as you need them to 👍
cant seem to locate version 15.04.2
my printer still won't print even after I fallowed along, it just goes to home then stops and then like 30 seconds after it starts to try and go past its printing limit and makes a terrible noice.
but yet the cat code still works but nothing else. I'm super disappointed in what its doing and I know its a great printer but mine is not working at all. please help
Hi Mathieu! The good news is that if the cat print works, then that narrows the problem down to your slicer settings (which means there isn’t anything wrong with the printer). A good place to start is to actually import the gcode settings from the cat file itself into Cura and then make any necessary changes. Hope that helps!
@@tombuck I'm gonna try to do that, if it dose not work or if something goes wrong I'm gonna come back here
@@tombuck also can you explain that just a little more please
If you put the printer’s card in your computer, you should then be able to open Cura and “import Gcode profile” from an existing print. I don’t remember the exact process, but I remember it being pretty simple.
Basically, set up a new printer profile and use the settings imported from the cat file.
The Enthusiasm Project ok thank you… if I have anymore questions I will come back here
Hi thinking off buying this can you design your own things abd how do you do it thank
You can use a program like Tinkercad or a Blender to make your own designs. You can also download existing designs from sites like Thingiverse.com
Hey I just got one of these for Christmas and for some reason when I hit print it is heated up all of the way but it wont print anything
Hmm, interesting. Have you tried printing the cat file that comes on the card with the printer?
Also, with the heating, are the bed AND the extruded both warmed up? There’s a separate setting for each, and I’ve sometimes had one turn on but not the other.
yes I have made sure I did that and it helped I have it up and running again thank you and I subscribed
Glad it helped, let me know if you have any more issues!
okay so another problem I have is that my firmware is different than all of the other ones
did you have to apply any updates to your printer when you got it
What do i set for the nozzle size?
Hi Joe, the nozzle size for the Mini is 0.4mm
The Enthusiasm Project Thank you. Using the old version of Cura is so much better. Awesome video!
all my large prints go fine half way through (5 hours in) then have the texture of a frosted mini wheat.
Interesting. Here’s a link to a troubleshooting guide from Simplify 3D:
www.simplify3d.com/support/print-quality-troubleshooting/
Sounds like it may be a top layers issue?
I have to take apart and clean the extrusion head every time I want to retry the print, so for some reason beyond my comprehension, my nozzle just stops up 2~6 hours in. then I go through the sewing needle/lighter cleaning method and try again.
I'm using the right temp for my 1.75mm PLA filament.
as of writing this comment I am on failed print number 8 for this one part I am trying to make, I am not even 25% into my current project, that I started a week ago.
That seems like a symptom of a defect to me. Maybe the nozzle needs to be replaced? What a total pain, I can’t imagine going through that whole process every print, only to have the print fail.
Sounds like hotend is not staying hot; Temps drop too low to melt the filament.
@@ddfoye well turns out it was a temp senser. It went out last week saying the temps were 0° and the damn thing caught on fire.
i think some part of my process is horribly corrupted, the cat prints perfectly fine, but then when i tried to print my own model it went haywire,
i had imported a simple structure from tinkercad into cura as an stl, the first print attempt used the default monoprice cura start and end gcode, and despite no mention of extruder direction or speed within it, when starting the print it unloaded the filament at top speed until the roller started skipping, i then went and found this script www.mpselectmini.com/starting_ending_g-code_scripts and loaded it into cura, what happened in the next 2 attempts went something like this
print start, system is completely static for 5-15 seconds before starting along an erroneous path, i press cancel, the screen glitches and reloads, ultimately rejecting the command, the print head moves to default position but doesnt stop trying to move, both z and x axis belts grind and skip until i hit cancel again, the screen does the same thing as before and the print head stops momentarily recentering itself before continuing to force itself to the left, i hit cancel again, the screen turns black and the print head centers at the middle of the x axis before printing a line towards the center, i never saw what happens past this point because i shut down the printer entirely out of panic and frustration,
i eventually test the cat print out of morbid curiosity, and it starts up and begins to print perfectly, i hit cancel and it does exactly what its told, even returning to home axis in the process
i tried the tinkercad model again and the same horror as before happened
It's always a process of trial and error, but if the cat is printing fine, that's a good sign- it narrows the issue down to your slicer. Clearly the printer is working properly. When I'm in this situation, I usually just start over from scratch with a new profile in the slicer.
You could also try importing the gcode form the cat model as a foundation to work from.
@@tombuck i tried using the cat gcode, but in cura viewing access is restricted and online its really tricky to find
i unplugged the printer a few days ago, i realized i had left it plugged in since july like a dumbass, its probably rebooted and everything should be fine, but the paranoia of it going berserk again is crippling
i need a reply pls,
Bro not sure if you're still having this issue but I might have found something: mpselectmini.com/firmware/corrupt_lcd_ui_fix
Please put the settings you found in the description. I not digging through a 10 minute video to find them.
