The Ravenglass & Eskdale was originally 3ft gauge until 1915, when it was converted to 15" gauge. And when it was converted, some Bassett Lowke engines along with Heywood locos from the Duffield Bank Railway. One of these, the 0-8-0 tank Muriel, became River Irt, so Bert could have started life out very similarly
Very nice! I like your point of Sigrid being the original "another engine" - it makes so much more sense than the Railway waiting nearly 10 years to construct Jock. I believe I've come up with an explanation for the age error in Sticking Power - literally spur of the moment. At the time the story takes place, Bert had been heavily rebuilt just a couple years prior. The illustrations obviously never show that, so perhaps one could interpret the dialogue error as Mike and Rex joking about his recent rebuild - hence why they call him "younger".
I like the explanation! I’ve got a feeling that the whole thing with Rex and Mike calling him young was supposed to be a joke line, but it’s not really made clear enough in the story that I can be 100% sure that was Christopher’s intent.
- As someone quite observant, I can see convoluted material is pretty much what Mattel is struggling with right now in Thomas & Friends. I mean think about it: you've not only got an entire wealth of classic book material with lore containing loose ends, but also a television series that has had a turbulent direction, involving many setpieces and character implications, that do not always add up and often contradict with each other, especially as the series went on. Trying to make sense of all of it combined with a minimal understanding of how it all, is enough to initimidate anyone who happens to be in that position. We senior fans may know what they're missing out on, but the fact that they don't shouldn't really be undermined if you ask me. - As much as what I learn about the Arlesdale Railway via the Thomas & Friends Wiki and his video is fun, what really fascinates me is what we are not told. We are never told why Bert is said to be the youngest engine of the Arlesdale trio. Was there something to him that distinguished him from his Ravenglass counterpart that Awdry meant for but never clarified? Just where did he, Rex and Mike work before landing on Sodor exactly? Awdry seemed to be just as much a talent at hinting more than he lets on as he was with writing with a family audience in mind, and that is very much apparent in the lore behind his work. It's another detail of why his work is so fascinating; it's like a gateway that Awdry purposely left for our own creative vision. Regards, Samuel Farris.
I don't think it's that Mattel can't wrap their heads around it, it's that Mattel doesn't want to invest the time, effort and money to do so. Mattel is a mass market toy company focused on selling a product first and foremost, they see the attached media as simply a marketing method to be done as cheaply as possible without hurting sales revenue, focusing only on the intended demographic for their products. And since the intended demographic for all the in-house produced merchandise is young children, that's what they're focusing on. The only merchandise that older demographics might typically be interested are the full hobby-grade model trains, and those aren't even made by Mattel - Bachmann, Lionel and Hornby produce those under license.
He also got incorrect the route of the MSR, as Ffarquhar Road came before Marthwaite, and the line went further east of Ulfstead Rd., originally terminating at Arlesdale Rd. before 1906 when the line was extended to King Orry’s Bridge closer to Peel Godred.
I wonder if that's why the writers of Season 2 of Thomas the Tank Engine got things mixed up with Toby the Tram Engine and Arlesdale - because they read a reference to the Arlesdale Tramway?
@@theenigmaticst7572 And then, there's the Peel Godred branch line starting at Killdane that first caused the MSR's decline, then the following war efforts.
Amazing history video of the railway! One thing you didn't add in the ending was how Mattel disrespects the miniature engines. Mattel deems them and the Skarloey Railway unmarketable, pointless, and obscure. Which is why they don't appear anymore and their excuse is not much story potential as standard gauge engines. Still great video! I wish Frank and Jock appeared in the show though and maybe the Blisters and Sigrid
I loved your use of the Intro music for Herbie goes to Monte Carlo. But my goodness I did not know there was soo much lore to Thomas, well done on the video ☺️
Well done video! I can’t admire the fact that the Small Railway Engines were ever televised at all enough! You have to love the smallness but strength of these little engines!

Excellent video! I have to say I went into this not expecting much but you really covered every relevant corner of lore, no matter how obscure. I'd love to see video essays of similar depth focusing on the other railways of Sodor in future. Great work! PS "Shelagh" is pronounced the same as "Shiela". It's an Irish name :)
I am so inspired. When I was a kid I did not know these characters. Later I Watch the free Willy engines on CGI. And now I am very inspired! ☺️ this video is so awesome
as you said that furness railway was the railway that ravenclas and eskdale railway was conected to and that bert was built in 1890s that means that edward could have met bert before coming to sodor
Oh wow, this was done super well! Love the smallies P.S. Can you do another everything wrong with? It's my favorite series of your's and it just makes my day every time I watch it
Nice video! Two things I would like to add is that Faulty whistle seems to be a version of Mike’s whistle. And in the cgi era, the Arlesdale railway was extended to arlesburgh harbor. Still an amazing video!
Nice man! I would like to see you make videos talking about the history of the standard gauge railway, narrow gauge railway, the mountain engines, Wilbert and his bro Sixteen (or at least they look similar to bros), the history of all the road vehicles, and the history of all the diesels please.
Wilbert Awdry: "I made an extremely deep children's story series that the whole family can enjoy, complete with a focus on just enough realism while still remaining whimsical, high-quality storywriting, attention to detail and massive worldbuilding." Mattel: "And I took offense to that."
Excellent history video of the Arlesdale Railway 👍👍 This lovely little railway my personal favourites from the Railway Series as I’m a fan of smaller railways and I have seen Mike & Burt basis in action at many small heritage lines.
Nice video! I'm just wondering how you worked out that the first story in Jock the New Engine was set in 1967? Last time I read the book, it didn't seem that the first story was set directly after Small Railway Engines, but admittedly it has been a while since I read the books!

Finally! Someone else has the same grievances that I do about the continuity of Jock The New Engine! :-P I for one would personally fancy seeing some love and attention given to Sodor’s various people. Such as the Regaby Family, where the 6th Lord Regaby was the NWR’s 1st Chairman. Or about the Norramby family, where The Earl of Sodor gave his namesake to Duke. Actually its quite interesting too with what family tree history Awdry created. It's noted that Charles Laxey is related to Peter Dreswick, son of Nicholas Dreswick. Who in turn had a descendant married Sir Stephen Topham Hatt, that being Helen Margaret. And of course, Sir Stephen Topham Hatt’s grandfather married Jane Brown, daughter of Sir Handel Brown I. Sir Topham & Lady Jane Hatt had a daughter named Barbra, which married Lord Albert Regaby. Basically, everyone is inbred. You can thank me later for this sheer volume of information you probably didn’t want to know. Anyhow, I thought the video was pretty good. Though, when mentioning the Arlesdale Railway’s stations, you forgot to mention Ballamoddey and King Orry’s Bridge. I definitely enjoyed how everything was formatted. But I think personally you could’ve talked more about Arlesburgh Harbour & its Castle. How the ballasting processing plant is at Killdane. Finer details like that. That being said you don’t want the video to be too long. Oh yes, and Coronation Scot was a good music choice. Alright, I’ll shut up now. I look forward to seeing more videos from you! :-)

It's true
this is one of the best history lessons of talking train lore class, not gonna lie
it took me six year to realize the magic reference in sodor legend of the lost treasure. Thank you for the outstanding video I can’t wait for more.

There's something you missed, before the Mid Sodor Railway, there was the Arsledale Tramway which operated from 1867 to 1880.

lmfao
This was unexpected but we all need this
This video came out of nowhere and I love it. Great job as always I’d love to see more videos like this
The arlesdale railway is one of my favourite railways on the island, i just love the miniature engines, so this is great
This is so educational.
as a fan of both herbie and thomas I LOVE the fact that you used Herbie the love bug music in this very cool!
I’m so glad someone else noticed the Herbie music! I thought it fit the video pretty well.
That thumbnail looks quite delicious.
This is amazing I love the smallies so it's nice to know the history of their railway
This was Great! I’d personally like to see a video on the culdee fell railway next!
A touch of the Herbie goes to Monte Carlo theme. Nice. Good video.
Would love to have one on the Culdee Fell Railway in future. Really trying to learn about that one as I'm trying to write for it right now.
5:45, that's Rosegarth Guest House in Ravenglass! :O My uncle used to run that guest house until 3 years ago! :)
Oh wow 0-0

Guys, the king has returned
I love the “Herbie Rides Again” music at the beginning ❤️
Great video! The Arlesdale Railway is my favorite Sodor railway. I'd be interested in seeing you do the Skarloey or Culdee Fell Railway next!
Amazing video! Keep up the good work 🚂🚃🚃

This was awesome. I did an edit a while ago to see how Bert’s rebuilt would look in the cgi series.
This is great timeline for the miniature engines and there little railway

It may not get as many views, but this is way better than any Accidents Will Happen music video. I’m excited to see more from this series.
"The Fat Gauge" caught me off guard 😂

Sam: “All but 1 engine”

Part of me just wants to see miniature, narrow and standard sitting in a line.
