The perfect sports tourer? 2024 BMW S1000XR first ride

  • It's fair to say I didn't much love the old S1000XR. But it seems BMW's fixed most of that bike's misgivings for the 2024 update - so join me on a long first ride that covers motorway comfort, handlebar vibes and a pretty sodding fun B-road blast. I won't spoil it too much, but it feels as if BMW's made my ideal touring bike. Full review will be here in a week or two - these are just my first thoughts, so drop any questions in der Kommentz.

    I have a 2021 version. It has over 21k on the odometer in 2 1/2 years, and I absolutely love it. I just finished an 1100-mile trip from SC to WV/VA mtns, and it was a blast. Great roads and an excellent bike. The bike didn't skip a beat. It's comfortable, fast (fast enough for me), and you can mount luggage with all the tech anyone can want. As for the vibes, I don't even notice it. I guess some people may be more sensitive to it than me.I'm very happy with the bike. BMW hasn't let me down.

    My 2024 XR is smooth as silk. I only occasionally feel passing vibration in the foot pegs when sending it up the RPM band. The seat is a massive improvement over my 2021 XR. Everyone that has ridden it has said the same. This bike is fast, plain and simple. A tune really wakes them up aslo.

    Now I know the BMW is more powerful especially the M1000XR but sadly it also looks like it was beaten up with more then one "ugly stick" plus Suzuki GSX1000GX more aesthetically appealing and speck for speck gives You 95% of the power for 3K pounds less. What I would love to see is Triumph taking their 1160cc triple from the Speed Triple and putting it in a refreshed Tiger Sport with 17inch wheels single side swing arm semi active suspension and 6 axis IMU with all the new electronic stuff that we want from the bike. I know Triumph won't give us a new Daytona 1200 but a Tiger Sport 1200 would be an epick bike with taller suspension for the shitty UK roads. 165BHP 235KG wet it would sell like hot cakes! The next morning, he had cold start problems. WE HAD TO TOW IT TO START. On the 11th day, he had issues with charging his phone and the GPS. It is a 2023 model. He is about to trade it in for a Kawi H2, 2023. He did a 3 day run on the H2 for 443km's, and seem to be very happy. 15% FAILURE IS WAY BETTER THAN 40%.

  • @2631Fred
    @2631Fred 2 месяца назад +14

    My take on it. It's not a touring bike. Vibrations, heat and that seat. Try and sit on it for 2 weeks and 3670km's. It's a weekend sports touring bike. Then the recalls and 40% failure rate. Then BMW trying there best to not repair anything under warranty. Long fights and issues to get anything fixed under warranty. Read the online reviews. Some taking up to 10 months. Buy Japanese. BMW, expensive parts and services. Not worth the money. I would far rather buy the Kawi H2, than this bike or any BMW except the R 1250 GS for long distance touring 2 up, and pray the driveshaft doesn't fail. The new 2024,1300cc, NAH. Already has issues. IN REALITY....Why do you need that power for a touring bike??? It's all a testosterone and ego problem, which these companies love. Grow up. Become smart and spend your money wisely. If you do not have the autobahn, or going on a track day, then stay away from high performance and high compression engines. It will cost you a fortune on the long term. If you understand physics, and have some technical knowledge, you will get this. Power to weight ratio. This bike is not making any logical sense. Lessons learned. Why are their sooo many BMW's at low km's up for sale???? ISSUES and very expensive parts, services and accessories. BMW 40% failure rate. Ducati=33%, Yamaha=11%, Honda and Suzuki=12%, Kawasaki=15%. Even Harley's and Triumph now are far more reliable than BMW's. In my view, BMW is a total ripp off. My son in law, worked for BMW for 19 years. He eventually walked out. They are not interested in sorting out their problems. Their goal is to spit out as many models as soon as possible to try and take the market, doesn't matter if they have problems. Once they get your money, they are happy and forget about good client service and warranties. BMW does make good looking bikes, but that is were it ends. Invest your money in reliability and use common sense. This is not the perfect sports touring bike!!!!!! PURE BS!!!! If you have money to waste, then buy BMW. I do not have that luxury. BMW has the WORST reliability in the whole market, so why spent anything on it???? You go to AUS or Africa, the bikes with the issues are all EU bikes. The Japanese bikes never or seldom have issues. Flat batteries, cold or hot start problems, drive shaft problems, injector problems, computer problems, air filter problems, shocks problems, starter motor problems, electronic problems, wiring problems, center stand switch problems, springs broken, spark plug problems, ignition problems, fuel problems etc, etc. Buy Japanese. They are not the most good looking bikes, but hell, they are reliable and comfortable. Isn't that a typical touring bike???? If you have money to waste on a BMW, I will gladly except 50% of it into my personnel account as a donation of good will.

      Every BMW bike I’ve owned is a complete contradiction to your experience. I have an ‘87 K75S with 239,000 Miles on it. I have a 2009 K1300S with 84,000 miles on it. A 2007 R1200S with 64,000 miles on it. A 2018 S1000R with 34,000 on it. A ‘74 R90/6 with 40,000 on it. My kids own an F900R, an S/XR another S/R and an R/RS. Most of these bikes have seen track days and see daylong-weekend long rides. My bikes have traveled NA countless times. The only visits to a dealer have been for annual service for internal engine adjustments/shaft services. I’d say your experience has been tainted by a poor dealer, not a bad bike.
      Triumph Moto2 and KTM 990 and Ninja 400s also in the stable and ALL have more dealer visits for “issues” than all my BMWs combined over 40 years of ownership. They are an outstanding brand, not for everyone, but I’d stack them against any bike model for model for long term reliability, service life, and pure pleasure riding.

      As an owner of a new 2024 S1000XR I can fairly express bewilderment at this diatribe.
      It’s an amazing machine. I rode 9+ hours yesterday in the mountains and ended the day with no back or posterior discomfort, incredible day, even with high winds.
      Maybe own the bike, sit it, ride it, something, I don’t know. At least then your opinion will be informed.

      I have one without any problems, the best electronics I have had, I think it is more frustration then arguments, however no one forces you to buy one. I drove 4600 km in a week, without any problems and lots of comfort and I had Honda, Triumph Aprilia, Ducati before. By far the best bike I ever had
