I chose the Ducati Multistrada Pikes Peak over the BMW XR. For me one of the draw backs of the XR was the riders saddle is a bit bucket shaped and didn't feel comfortable. I prefer the looks of the Ducati and the 170 horses are more than enough for sporty rides up and down mountain twisty roads or on the endless routes through Schwarzwald. Even at low to moderate RPM the Pikes Peak will make you smile every time you twist the throttle. I was surprised as how well the PP handles tight turns and long rides with passenger and luggage are just perfect with this bike. My Girlfriend and I just returned from a 4000km tour around Italy and we had a blast riding through the countryside twisty roads (even with the terrible condition of the Italian side roads)
Pikes Peak looks so good in person I would have that over the Bmw any day. I had the radar cruise control in Ktm 1290 SAS and it is great to use when you are not in mood to go fast and just criuse on highway.
Will have to see all the changes made to the XR. I owned a second gen XR, nice bike, but the seat was horrible. Traded the XR for a Pikes Peak, added the race exhaust & tune. The Pikes Peak is easily the better bike if you can afford it. More torque in low and mid RPM, better handling/suspension and it is more comfortable. Nicer looking as well. I am anxious to see the M1000XR though. I am sure it will be faster on a track, but on public roads I am not so sure the extra power will translate into better performance on twisty roads where torque is what matters.
Hard to argue. I made a similar move to a PP, but from a KTM SD GT. Same feeling as you. The KTM CAN be a sport tourer. But it's a modded Superduke in the end--and the old, outdated one at that--compared to the PP. The PP IS a sport tourer.

Exactly. Find anyone who needs all of that for normal road riding, then see how long they remain riding for. Thats more than 99% of riders would use on road. Marketing, not usable performance.
In my opinion they both have too many pistons pointing in the same direction to be exciting. The old V2 Pikes Peak would be better long term relationship material. The BMW XR is simply just not a long term exciting road bike. OK for a quick fling but it'll get boring quite quickly.
With the BMW cam system isn't this what Honda cleverly did with the CRV engine with clever machining without the need for any electronic actuation that may give problems in the future.
I am biased as I am a BMW owner so I am going for the M1000XR, it is completely ridiculous, but why not. However, I have always loved the Multistrada and would 100% ride either....
I’d go with the BMW especially with the shift cam engine which makes the inline 4 even better. I’m betting the BMW comes in a few grand less than the Ducati.
I'd go for the Ducati and one reason is that inline 4s still have that high frequency handlebar buzz, which puts my hands to sleep. Ducati's low frequency buzz is much more tolerable for me.
@@rlsedition that question has been corrected. I understand that Pryor to 2020 editions the BMW bike had that buzz over the bars. I own a 2022 S1000 XR And there is not a bit of vibrations not on the bars, and neither at the pegs 👍🏻
@@Fernando90054 I haven't heard any bike journo make that claim, that the vibes have disappeared on the S1000XR. That's a bit difficult for me to believe, as inline 4s have a second order high frequency issue which show itself in the handlebars. The other thing is that some folks are more sensitive to this issue than others. Every inline 4 I've owned has had this issue and I don't like it. If it doesn't bother you, great.
@@rlsedition yes , probably you’re right again on that about sensibility that changes from person to person. You know, like I know that defects are more popular than their corrections. But I can understand the argument about the engine type . When it’s tolerable, for me a little vibration, is a good vibration. Always has been to me. What could suit you well could be a bike like the Honda Goldwing. It’s the smoother bike that I ever ridden 👌🏻
Why the jacked up suspensions, though? I just wish manufacturers started building proper GT motorcycles like the GSXS GT, R1250RS, and Super Duke GT. Take the M1000R, put a half fairing, a proper pilion seat and some paniers and that's it. Ducati could do the same with the Streetfighter platform and bring back the Supersport.
The proof will be in the riding but both bikes suffer from a race track engine shoved into a street bike. Coming from a 1260 Multi I thought the V4 Multi was terrible as it has little bottom end power and only gets interesting when you've long passed street speeds. As an inline 4 the BMW could be worse. To me there are just better engine configurations for these bikes, like KTM's 1290.
I have the only actually good multistrada made. From 10 to 15. Mines a 13 1200. DVT bikes are more trouble than their worth. Tuned a 1200 nibbles the heals of 200hp with ease. And honestly? Dont know many folks that can handle all 150 of its stock hp, let alone after a tune. So imo? That bmw is a waste. MTS are already expensive. That stupid peen extension "200hp" bmw will likely cost as much as a pikes peak RS. Screw that.
Not fan of radar cruise control. I understand matching the slower speed but if I am catching up I am going to pass at some point anyway plus with all of the systems I have encountered when pulling out to pass the acceleration times are slow and now there is someone I am holding up so I just end up flooring it to get out of the way. By the way the Multi would be my choice.
The chances are that the BMW will be much more reliable for a longer period of time, so I think that for anyone who consider buying one of them, it's no brainer to choose the BMW.
I don’t care if these bikes are the peak examples of technology for each manufacturer. The price of each is mental and puts them far out of reach of the majority of riders. In the real world, in normal road driving conditions there are so many good bikes on the market at a sensible price which would easily keep with these machines.
So both performance variants, yet the BMW does get the engine to match and the Ducati doesn't. The MS is great, the main argument for the Pikes Peak is the 17 inch wheels, admit no off roading, so better tourer. But at a price.
I would have bought even a standard Multi V4S if it was a bit cheaper, and lighter. Couldn't justify it over a non-M S1000RR. I prefer the clip-ons riding position and I found a new 2022 S1000RR for 20k. I went to Ducati and specced up a Pikes Peak with some typical options, it came to 35k!
@@MattNeighbour Not a fair comparison, as the S1000RR is, like the Panigale, a race bike for the street. Plus, you can't compare pricing of a top-of-the-line Multi to a base S1000RR. Try the M version BMW superbike instead, which ain't cheap either.
@@rlsedition the purchasing decision was 2022 S1000RR (with most of the option packs included) vs Multistrada V4S. Still cheaper. The M1000RR is worse for the road as it doesn't have the electronic suspension, and it's better compared to a Panigale V4R. It comes down to whether you want a touring bike that's been made more sporty (Pikes Peak) or a superbike that's comfortable enough to ride to the track or the Alps.
The standard S1000XR is faster than the Duke but then I would go for the 1250GS if I had to have an adventure style bike. The torque on the boxer is 143NM at 6250 vs the Ducati at 125NM at 8750... no contest. Also when you look at used bike sales the BMW's have much higher kilometers / miles and the Ducatis have very little use. That should tell you everything.... Why have an adventure style bike that is not designed for off road use ? Buy a real road bike instead...
Multistrada wins. We already know the shift cam is an absolute fail being used in the GSA. BMW just loves screwing with cams, starting with the s1000xr cam wear issues straight out of the factory.
Have BMW sorted out the vibration issues on the XR?...I spoke with someone who rode one recently (before settling for a GS), and he said you still get vibration through the bars at speeds you don't want it...in the 70 - 80mph range....not ideal!
Active Cruise Control is ridiculous. Get into a luxury car and tune out properly. A bike is fully immersive and that’s the which of the why for riding at all-for me. Then again I eschew any 6-8 hour days in the saddle except once or twice every so often.
Wondering: If a "screamer" motor is ideal for bikes in this segment. I rarely rode my former KTM Superduke GT and current Pikes Peak over 8000 rpms. Especially as this is for "wife to ride on" bike. Yeah--I tricked her! Of course--the ride will tell the tale, but I'd like to se a Dyno graph of each overlaid to assess the "area under the curve" in the typical road-riding rpms. My PP did achieve a max torque on Dyno of 92-ft. lbs at about 7000-ish rpms. Good torque. At reasonable rpms. My SD GT did 97 ft lbs. around same RPM range.
Big fan, however how can you compare the two without having ridden BOTH. Seriously, was this just a click bait video?? Come on, you’re better than that.
both bikes can only be properly ridden on track, or on some sections of the autobahn. will probably be living at their local Strabucks parking lots LOL.

In my opinion they both have too many pistons pointing in the same direction to be exciting. The old V2 Pikes Peak would be better long term relationship material. The BMW XR is simply just not a long term exciting road bike. OK for a quick fling but it'll get boring quite quickly.
Reliability. Well two of my friends sold their Ducati’s because of this 🤷🏻♂️ so it’s the BMW for me 💪🏻😎☝🏻
Ducati have a 4 Yr unlimited mileage warranty in the UK.
BMW 3 yrs 36000 you work it out
XR will be faster. Hopefully it can have top and side cases without high speed wobble issues.
I know what you mean about the wobble and weave
@@BIGGGESTAL yeah, its a real problem with some of these big hp adventure bikes that can go very fast but also wobble from being unstable.
With the BMW cam system isn't this what Honda cleverly did with the CRV engine with clever machining without the need for any electronic actuation that may give problems in the future.
Need to compare M1000XR vs Multistrada V4 RS ..
Just shows how road focused the ducati 'adv' bike actually is. It's supposed to be competing with the GS now sport tourers
The Ducati and the XR M are both way more expensive than my standard but very nice XR TE. So im not changing.
The new 2024 Multistrada V4 RS comes in at 192 BHP, looks like another comparison to come?
IMHO, dynamic speed control is not ready for prime time.
BMW looks way better from my perspektive - I would go for that!
Even when I prefer the sound from a V engine.
I am biased as I am a BMW owner so I am going for the M1000XR, it is completely ridiculous, but why not. However, I have always loved the Multistrada and would 100% ride either....
Wow, so what Honda were doing 30 or so years ago with their V-Tec
I’d go with the BMW especially with the shift cam engine which makes the inline 4 even better. I’m betting the BMW comes in a few grand less than the Ducati.
I'd go for the Ducati and one reason is that inline 4s still have that high frequency handlebar buzz, which puts my hands to sleep. Ducati's low frequency buzz is much more tolerable for me.
@@rlsedition that question has been corrected. I understand that Pryor to 2020 editions the BMW bike had that buzz over the bars. I own a 2022 S1000 XR
And there is not a bit of vibrations not on the bars, and neither at the pegs 👍🏻
@@Fernando90054 It's also what type of vibration, as the high frequency stuff bothers me where the low frequency does not (I ride a Ducati).
Traded the Pikes Peak for the new v4 RS… would love to see these 2 pitched against each other!
same did you get yours do you mind to tell me what the dealer gave you on trade
Screw that.
You haven’t ridden either one, have you?
Not fan of radar cruise control. I understand matching the slower speed but if I am catching up I am going to pass at some point anyway plus with all of the systems I have encountered when pulling out to pass the acceleration times are slow and now there is someone I am holding up so I just end up flooring it to get out of the way. By the way the Multi would be my choice.
Not to mention it sometimes has trouble with cars merging in front of you/away from you.
The chances are that the BMW will be much more reliable for a longer period of time, so I think that for anyone who consider buying one of them, it's no brainer to choose the BMW.
Ducati is Audi
Wrong. Uk warranty on a Ducati is 4 yrs unlimited mileage. The BMW 3 yrs 60,000 miles.
I chose the Ducati Multistrada V4
Great review!!Thks!!
Plus the residual value of the Ducati will be far better than the bmw which can make a big difference when someone is buying using a pcp contract.
Seems like you made your mind up beforehand mate?.
As soon as the warranty is coming to an end Sell it fast!
I don’t care if these bikes are the peak examples of technology for each manufacturer. The price of each is mental and puts them far out of reach of the majority of riders. In the real world, in normal road driving conditions there are so many good bikes on the market at a sensible price which would easily keep with these machines.
This Multi don’t have Desmodromic valve system
So both performance variants, yet the BMW does get the engine to match and the Ducati doesn't. The MS is great, the main argument for the Pikes Peak is the 17 inch wheels, admit no off roading, so better tourer. But at a price.
You really think this BMW will be significantly cheaper? I do not.
@@MattNeighbour Your money, your call.
Ducati looks better, but those //M versions have looked badass.
SuperDuke GT is the very best sport tourer
Fuel economy and reliability could be the difference 🤷♀️
Have BMW sorted out the vibration issues on the XR?...I spoke with someone who rode one recently (before settling for a GS), and he said you still get vibration through the bars at speeds you don't want it...in the 70 - 80mph range....not ideal!
No vibrations on my 2021 XR; smooth as butter.
Cant imagine the new XR being stable at high speeds, just way too much power for a tall bike
If you ever rode both, you would know those are two very different types of motorcycles, stuck in same "group"
Active Cruise Control is ridiculous. Get into a luxury car and tune out properly. A bike is fully immersive and that’s the which of the why for riding at all-for me. Then again I eschew any 6-8 hour days in the saddle except once or twice every so often.
nah it's great for long cross country journeys to rest but keep moving in right lane
absolutely fantastic review! WOW I loved this video.
Man the Japanese big 4 need to get in on this market. Like a more powerful Tracer or a ZH2 SX,
Tracer 10 with crossplane engine! or a supercharged versys :D
@@tubejorrit yeah, i think Tracer with CP4 from the R1M is the best option and it will sound pretty damn good!
BMW, baby!
Do I go with the Porsche, or the Ferrari? I think if you can swing the payment, you can't go wrong either way. Sounds like a rich person problem.
I'll look at the MS when they start making AGAIN a base model with a 17" front wheel.
Not a fan of the "off-road wanna be" 19" front wheel. 💩👎😒
It's not for you.
@@stevenkelby2169 that's not for you to decide. Go troll somewhere else. 👋
Ducati forever !!!!! ❤🇮🇹🇧🇷
BMW looks much better than Ducati...which looks like a collection of awkward angles!
BMW is much better looking. I do not like Ducati eagle look.
XR vs RS now ?
so bmw has vtec now
M1000XR forever
@7:11 what helmet is that?
Im not sure sir. But i think its Nexx or Naca
All that tech and design .. yet that exhaust canister under the belly pan looks hideous……
Motobobs videos are increasingly like promotion videos and clickbaits
I’ll take the BMW 3 year warranty
Yo tengo una PP v4 y en España son 4 años de garantía
5 year warranty in Australia
Multistrada is four years!
Ducati has a 4yr unlimited mileage warranty😂
VTEC just kicked in yo! I’ll take the Ducati.
Big fan, however how can you compare the two without having ridden BOTH. Seriously, was this just a click bait video?? Come on, you’re better than that.
KTM SUPER DUKE GT. A lot cheaper, a lot lighter, a lot more torque and still 173bhp also
both bikes can only be properly ridden on track, or on some sections of the autobahn. will probably be living at their local Strabucks parking lots LOL.
the radar cruise crap is just that. waste of $. You're on a bike, you should be passing the cages!
best thing ever invented every bike should have one
I'll take the Bimmer
Ducati s PP technical components are superior ...power is nothing without control
MXR gets me sexually excited. A have a S1000xr its not the best thing ever a have zx12r also witch a prefer for speed if bmw can sort out the vibrations and wobbling at speed then the MXR be a lovely bit of kit for us men over 6ft tall
PP any day over BMW
Yamaha Tracer 9 gt 🎉
Different targets, different performance, different pricing.
@@rlsedition right, value for money. Yamaha & Honda is for pleasure, and Ducati & BMW for service centers. P.S. ...information from operating experience.
@@freefleer_ola "Operating experience" from which model/year, exactly? The older bikes required much more frequent servicing than what Ducati sells today (I'm talking water-cooled bikes here). My 2017 SuperSport has 18k valve adjustment intervals, where my air-cooled 1999 900SS has 6k intervals. Today's Ducati's are on par or better than the competition on maintenance requirements.
@@rlsedition From Ducati, I had experience with a 2015 Ducati Multistrada 1200S. Malfunctions were constantly in the electronics and the brake system ...
@@freefleer_ola So yours is anecdotal, from your own machine. OK, but I have three buddies now on Multis who have had no issues at all. Don't use a broad paint brush on the brand to suggest all Ducatis have problems - they don't.
Ducati, no doubt.
i would take the BMW
already being an owner of 2022 X-Diavel ... and I have tried the Multistrada V4 ... it's good, but not great
the ducati 1260 enduro is a honda postie force fed with growth hormones
Radar Cruise control not available on the XR. Pikes Peak hand's down! can't really be called a "tourer" if you have to constantly adjust you cruise control. Those who don't like it can just turn it off...
if u want fast tourer kawasaki h2 sx is the best
