  • Today, hot from a viewer request, I give a brief tutorial on how to make a Hoya tower/cage trellis. This simple DIY project saves a ton of space, and displays your plants beautifully. Initially I wasn't sure that I'd love these, but I sure do now. It's the easiest and most efficient way I've discovered to present Hoya, lots of Hoya, lots and lots of Hoya!
    Then we'll look at the marvelous Hoya MB1594 'Sunshine' (mindorensis x MB 1228), and trellis a few. Time to evaluate these fast growing plants and get them ready for Spring sales.

    • @soberplantguy
      @soberplantguy  5 месяцев назад +2

      @@dontcallmepeaches596 Oh, that's a good one.... The first move I make is to lower the vines (once that growth tip is way up there) to make a fuller trellis. As additional growth points almost always begin elsewhere on the plant, I don't mind trimming it back. In the case of plants like the magnifica that I mentioned, I'll simply have to put it on a much larger trellis system. I'll no doubt be addressing this in a future video--thanks so much!

    Really enjoyed your video. New to your channel and subbed right off. I buy the small hair clips at the Dollar Twenty Five Tree and they work well for me. Ha I felt bad for the plant falling on the floor. Then laughed because it happens to all of us. Just two nights ago after a very physically hard day for me I went to shower and forgot I had about 30 hoya plants in the shower drying after a nice little wash down. Yep I tipped three over before I got all of them put back where they belong. Of course the shower floor was wet and the soil was sticking everywhere and I was so dang tired. I cleaned it all up. Thanks for sharing your trellis. I think this would work on my old free dump shopped converted greeting card rack into a hoya tower.

    .. And nope.. I don't remember the names on all the cuttings in my prop box 😳 nor do I keep the date of when I made them.. And yea, I keep telling myself that sure I can remember it.. Only fact is, that once I close the box and put it away, I forget all about it until a couple of months later.. Hi again! Can't believe I missed this video, it's so useful. I'm betting this'll work on my non-Hoya plants.
    BTW, you may remember that I requested an Ultimate Hoya 101. Well, you may not have an update, but I do.
    I made the mistake of popping over to see my mother and got my newly half-resurrected Hoya early. As expected, my Green Thumbed mother had little of use to say to mere mortals such as myself. Apparently this recently divided and repotted shell of a former Hoya (of still unknown lineage) will bounce back just fine if I just water it and not burn it. At least she approved of my proposed location for it (though, honesty, who knows with the Green Thumb types, I bet they could get a cactus to flower in a cave pond).
    Seriously, as we were walking through her personal jungle, I spotted a Syngonium with three-pronged leaves (I don't know the official name for this). That's something you won't even find in Syngonium-specific videos because it doesn't happen. I mean, it's a theoretical possibility, since it is the mature state of the leaf, but it's like those free climbing Pothos that get fenestrations after climbing a whole a tree. It doesn't just happen to normal people. Anyway, I said I didn't know she had a Syngonium, and she says to me, "oh, that's what this is?" Apparently it just arrived from somewhere and decided to climb her Camellia tree, and here we are. And no, "here" is not the Tropics.
    So, you see, I really do need your Ultimate Hoya 101. I am a humble normal thumb, and I need information!

    • @soberplantguy

    Your videos are so calming and also entertaining/funny. Its just the right mix!
    Thank you for the complete and clear guide. Cutting off the bottom wire to have bits to stick into the soil is new to me, and so is the pre shaping it to the shape of the pot, Ill definitely try those for the next hoya that wants a trellis!
    And what you said about putting some chunky parts on the bottom first because the coir/soil will get to the bottom anyway, never thought of that, but it makes so much sense!
    My personal experience with over 60 different (mostly 1 node) hoya cuttings in 6, 8 and 9 cm clear plastic pots:
    I found that some types grow right away when they have the tiniest of roots…. Some start growing leaves if the roots touch the sides and the bottom of the pot and stop growing leaves when they get more space to root (I dont mean rootbound, just touching the sides) …. And then theres also some that stop growing leaves when their roots touch the sides of the pot and those start growing leaves as soon as they have a larger pot with space to grow more roots. 🤔🤯😂
    I like on your idea of selling small plants locally for affordable prices. It is a nice way to sustain the hobby if you like propagating and have the space for it. Sharing and making people happy that way is great!

    Thank you for making them more affordable and available to others! How are you selling them? I'd love the opportunity to eventually own a hoya that you've grown if I could. If not from this collection of hoyas, but from the future.

    Love the music at the end! Thanks again for such an informative episode. With regard to distributing propagations. Where do you get the containers that you distribute them in? I'm getting ready to distribute my first propagations and was hoping to find a low-cost container preferably recyclable. Do you recommend plastic over organic?

      @@paxleidig5327 Depending on the plant I'm propagating, I use either the 2 oz plastic "shot" glasses from Walmart, tiny plastic cups, 6 oz water cups, 3" rectangular pots, or 4" pots. Almost always well-rooted, except to those experienced collectors who don't care about that and just want to get the plant to their homes. (Thanks God for them! Makes life easier...)

    So glad I found you! You're very easy to listen to. I have a crassipetiolata that must be 7 or 8 feet long by now. I was watching in the hopes of making something better than the circle it's on but is the cylinder type not big or sturdy enough? What do you recommend for an xl hoya?

    • @soberplantguy
      @soberplantguy  3 месяца назад +1

      Cylinders are naturally quite sturdy (I've grown a huge magnifica on one, for instance), and they can be built taller, or extended without any problem. But, for one of my crassipetiolatas I use a bamboo hoop trellis with twine forming a grid through the middle. That works well, and look fantastic. But you're right ... that is A LOT of vine to deal with 😁

      @soberplantguy  3 месяца назад

      @@galegale1965 A 4" pot is perfect for these trellises as I built it. Of course, one can make a larger cylinder when the time comes. But that will be a very nice, sturdy size.

    Such a great video! So happy I found your channel! I looove Hoya. I also use my moister meter…I don’t know what I’d do without that thing! lol. What number to you let it get to before you water your hoya? I’ve been watering at a 1 but if I have new leaves or peduncles I water when the meter says 2 sometimes 3. But was curious to know how you decide? Thanks so much!

    • @soberplantguy
      @soberplantguy  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hey, good to have you! I have two terrestrial Hoya that I water when the meter is on the lowish/mid side of green (no numbers on my $1 meter 🤣) Otherwise, I let it just begin to crest low green, approaching red/dry. The substrate I make, and the pots I use, make it very, very difficult to just lift the pot and tell if it's dry. They way almost the same right after I've watered them. Cheers from Iowa!

    “Attach it counterclockwise ‘cause that’s how Hoyas grow…” explain??

    • @soberplantguy
      @soberplantguy  5 месяцев назад

      Good question--Hoya vines will naturally wrap themselves around anything counterclockwise as they grow upward in their search for light. If you do try to wrap it counterclockwise, your plant is definitely going to try to undo your good work 😆
